Hotel del Luna: Manwol’s Clothes

Because I’ve been reading too many lavish compliments on her clothes on the internet, I wrote this.

I found these gifs from belsmultifandommess’ tumblr. Credit goes to her.

It’s too bad that the clothes aren’t arranged in chronological order because I want to analyze them. 🙂  I’d be surprised if her outfits weren’t designed to match her changing personality and her character development.

It seems that in the beginning she was wearing gaudy and garish clothes. Case in point: hideous purple dress with the mutton sleeves that she was wearing when she shot the Mayor!  She looked as if she was in the wrong century with that Annie-Get-Your-Gun style.

As for that little black dress, I know she was paying homage to Audrey Hepburn and Tiffany’s when she wore that outfit at the jewelry shop. But come on. It may be haute couture but why spend thousands of dollar when that style is already display in racks at Walmart for less than $20 (made in China??).

I know she wore the ochre-colored dress (Manwol calls it poop-colored) because that’s Chansung’s color. Awww… that was sweet of her but it was the wrong season to wear that color. Maybe in the fall, but not springtime or summer.

As for the red leather dress? It looked shiny, brand-new, right?

Well, the inconvenient truth about leather is that it squeaks, especially new leather. It has to be broken in or conditioned. Otherwise the wearer is squeaking like a mouse as she sashays down a room. And don’t get me started on the squeaks-per-minute a leather skirt makes when sitting on a leather seat of a car. 🙂

Lace inserts around the neck are passe. Like this  picture is from a blog entry dated  2012. If Manwol has the cleavage, then she should flaunt it. If she doesn’t have boobs, welllll… she can flaunt her collarbone. It’s one or the other.

Manwol is petite so she’s better off wearing tailored-clothes instead of those fussy clothes which look like a tent on her.  I give two thumbs-up to the peplum suit jackets or anything that adds to her hips. Colorwise, the baby blue suit suits her better than the baby pink suit (she’s too mature for that kind of pink).

But I like Manwol best in her loose floral outfits. She must have started wearing those easy-breezy springtime frocks when the tree started to grow leaves.

Consider this post like a red pill.

Perhaps it IS from the local version of Walmart? That would fit the change from Tiffany’s jewels to Swarovski crystals! 😂

A Beanie suggested the outfits may be something like a mood ring… after the red bedroom scene, I wondered if at least red outfits tied together. E.g. red outfit at the ghost wedding, but haven’t tracked down all the other red outfits.

I’ve been thinking that the Wardrobe person or the stylist is just hung up on mid 20th century style with a sort of Western ‘old world’ look. All those high lace collars, little hats, gloves both long and short … it’s deliberately from another era. And then deliberately some modern stuff is mixed in higgledy-piggledy. I don’t even feel that the colours or styles necessarily change in a linear way but seem random, although it’s true that her flowy florals are more in evidence compared to the severe look.

I actually like those soft floral dresses with mid-length flared skirts and her hairdos that go with them. I still like floral materials and I used to dress like that!!!

  3. Question on the earring. We got a quick close up of it. Does it have some specific meaning, or is it only a more pricey ppl? Same query on the hair stick… My reflex on these quick zooms is a note to self – hey, you’re supposed to see something in this zoom.

Just wondering if I’ve missed something or the something hasn’t happened yet.

@Flying Tool, they zoom ins may have been partially PPL. I think the earrings were only significant in that they represented CS getting 2 leaves or another leaf.

Hair stick was going to be a murder weapon and was nicely twirled for us to see (my guess) for greater dramatic impact.

@packmule3 was conjecturing that the design on the hair stick was the same as that on Captain CM’s headband, but I really can’t tell.

On the whole I felt that the accessories were just part of the style and PPL, without too much significance, except for those earrings.

  5. Iu really fit with this classic style. I dont know what they called for this fashion.
Because she use it often on her music video or concert. And she always looks gorgeous on it.
    I love it. 😂❤️

  6. She also changed outfit based on what she’ll do. Like when they eat the soup with white ball-like thing. White balls are spread over her dress and hair accesories. Also when they went to the library she said she needs to change her outfit because it doesn’t match the mood when she takes picture while reading. She usually wear red because it’s her fave color. Like her car. I got to this page because I’m looking for her light blue canvass-like suit and skirt. But haven’t seen it here also. 😅 I’ll keep moving then 😉

  7. If you tell me the episode, I can take a a screenshot and post it. 🙂

  8. I watched this kdrama for her clothes. It’s the first IU drama I have watched. I was not planning to watch this because of the ghost themed story but her long flowy dresses pulled me in. Lol! I also like her strong and tough character here, and yet very ethereal.

  9. Same here! This is the first IU drama for me. She chooses her scripts differently from other actors. She’s not afraid to do heartbreaks.
