Sanditon: Who’s Watching This, Janeites?

Calling Jane Austen fans!

@GB, @Table12200, @barbrey, @nrllee, @GB, @agdr03, @Phoenix.

Did you know that Sanditon is on?

It has 8 episodes and my PBS (public broadcasting channel) has shown 6 already.

I don’t know much about this story, except that it was unfinished. However, Andrew Davies, who did our much-beloved “Pride and Prejudice,” will adapt Ms. Austen’s extant manuscript and complete the story.

Is this any good? Is this heart-fluttering?

I saw one clip from the YT, and it certainly piqued my curiosity.

Who’s the guy, is this the hero?? I hope not.

Dude: Miss Heywood, what do you say about the prospect?
Miss Heywood: Very picturesque, sir. I hear that you’re an advocate for sea-bathing.
Dude: I am, Miss Heywood. You must experience it. The bracing shock of the first plunge. The incomparable feeling of freedom and lightness. The ocean bearing you up as you give yourself to it. Fearless. The gentle play of the currents over your nakedness (DID HE SAY NAKEDNESS???). Nothing can give one such a sense of well-being.

Then she was called off to walk with the others. She looked bewildered as if she couldn’t believe what she just heard.

Look. If you’ve an innocent mind, his words will – whoosh! – go right over you. He was simply talking about swimming in the sea.

Image result for whoosh over your head gif

But if you’re like me, with a keen sense of anything, even mildly, sexual in connotation, then you’ll get what the guy said.

Image result for raising eyebrows gif

The guy was talking about sex.

The bracing shock of the first plunge = the plunge here isn’t about diving into the water, but thrusting into a virginal woman’s body
The incomparable feeling of freedom and lightness = approaching climax
The ocean bearing you up as you give yourself to it = the or.gas.m
Fearless = passionate
The gentle play of the currents over your nakedness (DID HE SAY NAKEDNESS??) = the “afterglow” after the big one.

That’s why the girl is shocked. The sexual innuendo was outrageous. He shouldn’t be saying that kind of thing to a genteel girl.

But –

But I’m SHOCKED that the girl was shocked. Her shock tells me that she wasn’t so innocent as she looked because she understood his innuendos, if not word for word, then at least the gist of what he was saying.

So who’s watching this?

***

Just checked. The dude earlier was NOT the hero. That’s a relief.

Here’s the hero,

and the heroine.

lol. It helps when the leading man isn’t bad-looking.

Not bad-looking at all.

  1. Ah, another Jane Austen series. Thanks for the info @pkml3. I don’t know that I can get it to watch it though… YT only has snippets.

I read the comments and 1 official critic’s review. It seems this is more what Andrew Davies wants rather than what we imagine the prim and more proper Jane Austen would care to have in her story. There is shockingly sexual content and nekkidness, and not only in the dialogue, as you highlighted.

Austen couldn’t finish the novel due to ill health, but strangely, neither does Andrew Davies. So since there’s not going to be a season 2 as far as we can tell, watch this only if you don’t mind being left hanging.

I don’t mind watching it if I could find whole episodes. We’ll see.

  2. Whut? An open-ending? A cliffhanger?

Nope, then. I wouldn’t be happy if there’s no resolution. That’s what I like about Jane Austen’s novels. They end well.

Thanks for warning me. I was going to download the episodes (if I could) for my trip but I guess not.

  3. Just me, or does she look a tiny bit like Se-ri?

I think if he said nakedness, she would be shocked. Or maybe shocked because she wasn’t expecting so much detail by someone unfamiliar to her.

    Shall have to watch.

  4. Hello! Thanks to @packmule3’s post on the mention of nakedness in a Jane Austen TV adaptation (horror of horrors!!) my latent curiosity was aroused (no play on words intended) and I did thorough a Google search. Apparently the TV series ended with the lead couple confessing their love and then going their separate ways, with the hero Sidney promising to marry someone else out of family obligation or some such noble idiocy. This, as @pm3 rightly pointed out, is very unlike Jane Austen, whose novels always have happy endings. Andrew Davies may have been cherishing fond hopes of a Season 2, but he may have alienated a lot of Jane loyalists with that seemingly unhappy ending. I’m not sure I’ll check this one out, till maybe Season 2 (if there is ever one).

It’s good to be back here though 🙂 Still need to finish CLOY (have only been able to watch till ep.5). Will then be able to relate to all the interesting posts and comments here. Looking forward to it 🙂

  5. Theo James? I need to test it !

The actress actedin The Medici Master of Florence (a good show about Renaissance even if it’s not completely accurate)

  6. I watched Ep1 on the plane and couldn’t find it anywhere else so far to continue. It’s…very un-Austenlike. It feels like Downton with Victorian civilities? I couldn’t feel the tension and restraint that is signature Austen. Clever dialogue. Verbal parrying. I am not sure I will bother to continue.

  7. That makes three? four? nay votes now.

Sayaris, we’re counting on you to update us. Go ahead and “test it”. 🙂

Who’s Theo James?? Is that the lead male?

  8. Sorry to hijack your comment section @packmule3, but I couldn’t resist the temptation to say Hi to you, @GrowingBeautifully, @Barbrey and all the people that made watching Hotel del Luna so memorable to me.

What upcoming Dramas you (and the other Forumites) recommend to watch?.

A big hug for you all!!!

    FGB4877

  9. NOOOO need to apologize about hijacking anything. Are you a thread terrorist?

I don’t ban posters for out-of-topic conversation because we bitches know how to scroll down if we don’t like what we’re seeing. lol. Right?

Anyway, I’m still scanning the list of kdramas. Probably “I’ll Go to You When the Weather is Nice.” It starts next Monday. With Seo Kang-joon, Park Min-young, and Lee JaeWook (the 2nd male lead in Extra-ordinary You).

But in March there’s a couple that look interesting.

Maybe I’ll check out this HOLO Lover/boyfriend on netflix. Netflix has been heavily promoting it since I watch a lot of kdramas.

  10. Thanks a lot @packmule for your recommendations, I will keep a watch on your site to check your experiences 😉 . On the other hand thanks for the privilege you graciously gave me right now but I will try to use it sparsely and tastefully ^_^ . Please give my regards to the community.

  11. All the best @FGB4877 ☺️

See you around here whenever! 😉

  12. I’m giving this one a nay as well. I feel having discovered Jane Austin late, I should still be loyal only to her. 😂

Besides Easter is coming up so I want to be a good girl. 😆

  13. Missed you @Phoenix ! 😘

  14. Hi @FGB4877! 😁 How have you been? Many hugs to you as well! 🤗 Do come by and chat with us, even if you need to hijack threads. 🤪

  15. @agdr03: Missed you all smart bitches too 😘
Has been a crazy beginning of the year at work in a new role 🙁
Need to revisit a few of my favorite Xiao Nai posts by @packmule3 to recover 😛
I want to watch “I’ll go to you when the weather is nice” too. Looks romantic 💕 After I’m through with CLoY, of course.
Wonder when Lee Min Ho’s “The King – The Eternal Monarch” is scheduled to be on air. No dates announced yet I think. I’m interested in that one. It has the Goblin actress Kim Go Eun as well and the same director.
The HOLO one I’m not so sure about. Will wait for @packmule3’s recommendation 🙂

  16. “ Anyway, I’m still scanning the list of kdramas. Probably “I’ll Go to You When the Weather is Nice.” It starts next Monday. With Seo Kang-joon, Park Min-young, and Lee JaeWook (the 2nd male lead in Extra-ordinary You).”

Count me in. Although…couldn’t they have settled with a more concise title?? What a mouthful? So is the title hinting at “timing”? As in, I am only a fair weather friend? Or that I will only be romantically involved with you when I think everything’s okay? So far the teasers have this lovely romantic filter on (sepia like) giving it nostalgic vibes. I am thinking similar to When Camellia Blooms minus the serial killer.

  17. “ Wonder when Lee Min Ho’s “The King – The Eternal Monarch” is scheduled to be on air. No dates announced yet I think.”

    I read July?

  18. Hi there, @nrllee! Good to chat again 😊
July, is it? That’s not too far away then. At least not end of the year!
Haha..I completely agree with tou about the overly long title (or is it only after translation that it becomes long in English?) We will need to defer to @packmule3 and her newly acquired Korean language skills here 🙂 Why do I also have the feeling the ending may be open ended like CLoY (where from what I read, the lead pair get to meet only once a year)? Hence maybe the title I’ll come to meet you again in summer/spring and then we go our separate ways for the rest of the year 😛

  19. Thanks for the shoutout, @pm3. Been dealing with some real life issues, so I totally forgot that Sanditon was currently airing. I was stoked to watch this drama until I heard more about the “cliffhanger” ending, along with the news that a Season 2 is so far not in the works. I hate unresolved cliffhangers and even more the fact that when we leave the drama, the hero is marrying somebody else? Um, what? A lot of anger on the Janeite forums for various reasons but especially lot of talk that this “ending” was just a greedy moneygrab by Andrew Davies to force a Season 2 rather than wrap it up in one season with a conclusive (happy) ending. As a result, I’m still on the fence about watching this drama.

    Good to see you @Phoenix
@FGB4877- I recently binged My Holo Love on Netflix and enjoyed it, although it did drag for me in a few places.
Otherwise, ! was thinking about watching Forest starring Park Hae Jin and Jo Boa, but it’s gotten mixed reviews so I’m holding off for now.

  20. @Phoenix
I heard release date for The King: The Eternal Monarch is July 2020. However, just yesterday I saw on Soompi forums a rumor that the drama will premiere in April 2020, so I guess we will just have to wait and see. For sure it will be on Netflix though.

  21. Oohh spoken well by our Xiao Nai President. 🥰 Go for it! I’ve finished King’s Avatar and it wasn’t so bad, he’s still the best. 😉

I hope new work is not making you too exhausted. All the best for it.

I’m interested in LMH’s new drama too but more on WDW as he caught my attention in My Country. 🥰

  22. Hi Everyone, just a note for our future consideration, … listening to a review on Cdramas, if we want sweet and tropey but totally inoffensive fun with romance, the one being recommended is I’ve Fallen for You. Seems although it’s a web drama with a not-big-budget, it still looks pretty good, has pretty young leads acting well, and nice OSTs.

Another one that is well reviewed by the same reviewer is the Taiwanese Someday or One Day. She says it’s the best Chinese language contemporary drama she’s seen in the last few years, which says a lot, since she watches so many shows.

Now what we have to do is to wait for a site that puts out episodes with English subs. 😋

  23. Sending you hugs @Table122000 , hope everything is ok with your home issues. 😘

  24. Thanks @GB ☺️

I’m almost finished with Find Yourself and I did see a few posts on I’ve Fallen For You and it does look cute. The main actress there is in Find Yourself too. 😊

  25. Hello you all and thanks for your recommendations!!!. On another more intellectual note, this incomplete Jane Austen’s novel seems to fall in the same group of works of art regrettably unfinished like Lady Murasaki’s Tale of Genji, Geoffrey Chaucer’s Tales of Canterbury and Giuseppe Verdi’s Turandot as incomplete and even if they are references in their fields, they seems to be big teases to me (Lord Buddha, I love a FINISHED story… and if I don’t like the ending, then I can imagine a more satisfying one or read a fanfiction).

    Don’t kill me please XD

  26. Ah, that’s something @agdr03 … how do you find that main actress?

@Table122000 Hi there and hope you and home are fine!

@Phoenix about those meet once in months/years sort of relationships… for reasons of being willing to be long-suffering and still faithful, these are supposed to be romantic, but I do find them tedious. So little happens to push the relationship along when the 2 finally do have a few precious moments to meet. And how come most of the time they don’t seem to be able to communicate through any type of social media baffles me. 😆 🙄 😆

  27. Howdy @Table122000! Great to be back again here with you all 😘
Hope your issues get sorted out soon 🙂
If you liked HOLO, then I’ll give it a try too (considering we both liked ‘Before We Get Married’ and ‘Marriage, Not Dating 😊).
April or July, whenever The King is released, I’ll give it a try for LMH.
‘Forest’ is on Wiki, but I find Park Hae Jin’s face too deadpan for my tastes; so I’ll skip it.

  28. @FGB4877 and Everyone, laughably, because of our discussion here, I found myself picking up my book of the 3 novels (2 incomplete) by Jane Austen, “Lady Susan / The Watsons / Sanditon” to read a bit of Sanditon. Such a pleasure to have Miss Austen’s flow of sentences and dialogue passing through my mind again. I’m sure our talented writers here would be able to write better fan fic to continue Charlotte’s tale than Andrew Davies and the writing team. 😈 😉

  29. @GB I agree, it’s super funny that in today’s age, they don’t Facetime or video chat 😛 I find all this tedious too (and highly impractical), but in Kdramas and Cdramas, they seem to find the concept of suffering nobly for love very romantic!

  30. @Phoenix I recently discovered Park HaeJin. I really like his acting. I can’t remember who but was it @GB or was it @Barbrey who suggested Cheese in the Trap as a nice slice of life story. And it was that. Loved it. Bar the ending. No make that the last few episodes. PD’s choices in the end was deplorable resulting in a massive controversy in real life. I loved the 2 leads there Park HaeJin and Kim GoEun. Kim GoEun is magic at making you fall for her. She’s the most unlikely of female leads (looks wise) but she has that special something that just makes you want to sit in her corner right up. She’s very real. I imagine she will be the same in The King. And what’s the bet that our delectably broody second male lead Woo DoHwan is going to steal LMH’s thunder in spite of LMH fan girls trying to convince us otherwise?

@Table122000 Hope things settle for you soon!

@Phoenix The reason I remember July as The King’s release date is because it was in an article pitting it against the much anticipated S2 of Secret Forest (also coming out in July) which I am greatly anticipating. I love the writer.

@GB are you planning to catch the latest rendition of Emma in the cinemas? I hesitated watching the latest Little Women. It’s such a classic and whilst I love the characters, I am always bitter that Jo never ended up with Laurie… I wouldn’t have minded if he ended up with Beth but why Amy?? 😂

  31. @nrllee So I based my opinion on PHJ on ‘Man to Man’ which I watched on Netflix and didn’t like. I’ve heard mixed reviews on ‘Cheese in the Trap’ – so tayed away from it till now. I agree with your assessment of KGE – there’s something endearing about her. I liked her in Goblin a lot.
Secret Forest S2? Really? Why is this the first time I’m hearing about this?! Have I been living inder a rock lately (err..more like under office roof, I think :P).
By the way, coincidentally I just watched the latest movie adaptation of Little Women and really liked it. Saoirse Ronan as Jo was brilliant (Emma Watson was just okay) and Timothee Chalamet as Laurie suited his part to the T.I would definitely recommend it…and I loved the happy ending at the end..left me with a nice, warm feeling 😍

  32. @packmule3 On a side note: may I say how much I love your coining words like ‘thread terrorist’?😛🤣🤣 Is hijacking the thread from Jane Austen to Louisa M.Alcott considered an act of thread hijacking/thread terrorism? 🤣🤣🤣
I was sorely tempted to jump onto a discussion with @nrllee on why Laurie ended up with Amy and not Jo and why it makes perfect sense to me, but I nobly desisted 😛😛😛

  33. Wha??? Laurie didn’t end up with Jo??!!

    😈🙂

Go ahead. I like Little Women. I was grossed out when Jo married that old professor. (He was a professor, right?)

  34. Where can I watch “I’ve Fallen for You”? Was that on Netflix or Viki? I saw it somewhere. I can check it out. 🙂

  35. Did somebody mention that there was a new Emma out? Where? On TV? Or theaters?

  36. This thread is like a mini-reunion. 😂👍

    @Table122000, I hope everybody’s in good health.

Fern, Arihsi, Welmaris, anybody out there? Feel free to join us. We’re all old friends but we’re inclusive.

  37. @Packmule3 Emma (2020) currently screening in cinemas here (Oz). Reviews are mixed. https://www.vulture.com/2020/02/emma-movie-review-autumn-de-wilde.html

  38. @Phoenix I always felt Amy was so…left field. It just felt…very forced…shoe horned… but that’s just my personal opinion. 😂. And Beth…poor sweet Beth…dies. 🙁. @Packmule3 yes to Professor Bhaer (?). I always envisaged him as a lumbering giant gentle bear (as his name inferred). I guess Jo needed stability and he was the “sensible” choice. Emma is another one of those old man marries ingenue tales…but in the usual Austen way, because she teased us for so long and endeared Knightley to us so much, I was more than ready when he proposed. I still love how he scolds her, “Badly done Emma. Badly done.” regarding her unkind treatment of Ms Bates. That was my favourite scene. I actually really enjoyed the 2009 BBC version (Jonny Lee Miller was perfect as Knightley).

    https://youtu.be/0gSn0YoTC2I

  39. @nrllee: I agree with you on feeling horrible about poor Beth dying. I didn’t like Professor Bhaer or Baer or whoever too…that felt kind of forced to me (though in the movie, they showed the progression of the relationship better).
I felt that Jo and Laurie’s relationship was more brother-sister kind camaraderie/kindred spirits and lacked that special chemistry/spark needed for it to progress to romance. Also, Jo was like a force of nature – someone determined to make a mark, while Laurie was this lazy entitled rich heir whiling away his time. They were both immature but Jo had a more forceful character and a purpose in life to make a mark as a writer. I felt they were not suited in terms of basic character compatibility.
Amy, on the other hand, I always found kind of vain and more practical than Jo. I’m not sure if she suited Laurie more (though she kind of managed to get Laurie back on track). I’m not sure if that professor suited Jo more (though he probably grounded her impulsiveness with his maturity). I only felt that Jo and Laurie wouldn’t have suited in the long run. Again, that’s my personal opinion 🙂
The movie however makes no mention of Beth liking Laurie, though the book does, I think.

I’ve watched the Gwyneth Paltrow version of Emma which was okay, and an earlier TV adaptation I think. Hadn’t heard of the new one. Just saw the trailer on YouTube. Not sure I like the actress.

  40. “ I’ve watched the Gwyneth Paltrow version of Emma which was okay, and an earlier TV adaptation I think. Hadn’t heard of the new one. Just saw the trailer on YouTube. Not sure I like the actress.”

I greatly encourage you to watch the 2009 BBC version (with Jonny Lee Miller and Romola) if you haven’t already. 4 hour long episodes. It’s an upbeat and beautiful adaptation. It never drags. Rollicking fun and clever (just like Emma). Romola was my favourite Emma. She had the right mix of sunshine optimism and feisty wit. Jonny Lee was my favourite Knightley. Although he was also my favorite Edmund in Mansfield Park.

I agree with your assessment of Jo/Laurie. I put it down to my younger self preferences which stayed with me in every film made iteration of the books. I recall being so utterly devastated upon reading about Jo’s refusal of Laurie that I stubbornly refused to continue with Little Men and Jo’s Boys till much later in life 😂. Thus encumbered by my ordeal, I have relived that bitterness with every subsequent viewing. I think in my latter years I have since made peace with Louisa May Alcott and the viewing of Little Women is a whole lot less painful.

  41. @nrllee: I don’t remember which TV adaptation I saw. It was quite a while back. I too might not have been evolved enough to appreciate the subtle humor in it. After your recommendation, I really want to watch the 2009 version. I love the witty dialogues in Emma – so looks like I will definitely enjoy it now.

  42. @packmule3: Yes..feels like the good old days of us gushing over Love O2O and dissecting MOA 🙂

  43. It’s so fun! 😁 It’s like a full blown dinner party with lots of champagne 🥂 and great conversations! 🥰

  44. @Phoenix I am rewatching it (Emma 2009) right now. 😂. I wanted to see if it was as good as I remember it to be and it still is. It’s on Daily Motion.

  45. Wooohooo! I agree @agdr03..it’s so much fun 🥂🥂🥂

@nrllee: Thanks. I’ll watch it on Dailymotion then on a weekend soon 😊

Isn’t it fun revisiting old dramas and books to see if we still like them as much as we did when we first saw them at an younger age? I’ve found lots of times when I no longer find dramas/books as engaging as before whereas I distinctly remember having gushed about them when I first viewed them. Conversely, those that didn’t leave much of an impression in earlier years now seem so interesting (I think this might have been the case with the BBC Emma if I did watch it earlier). Does this happen to others as well – changing preferences over time..or is it just me?🤔🤔🤔

  46. I’m fairly new to liking Jane Austen @Phoenix so I can’t say my preference have changed. I grew up reading Mills n Boons then moved on to Jude Deveraux, Danielle Steel etc. I should really read the book of Jane right? ☺️

I even read it wrong today, I thought Sanditon is by the other guy, Andrew Davies. 😁 I’m embarrassed. 🤦🏻‍♀️ But I still won’t watch it because I like my happy endings. ☺️

  47. @agdr03: I read M&B and Jude Deveraux in school too, along with Jane Austen, and not embarrassed at all to admit I quite enjoyed them at the time 😀 I remember hoarding books by a series of favorite M&B authors. Then I graduated to Georgette Heyer’s novels because I got hooked on Regency romances somehow – I think because they, in some way, reminded me of Mr.Darcy and Elizabeth. Those were the good old days when I went all starry-eyed about romance in novels and wasn’t as cynical or bitchy as now 😛 But I still love my happy endings, just like you – that has not changed at all 😀

  48. This is the summary for I’ve Fallen For You. 😊 It says there’s only 24 episodes so that’s good compared to 45-52. 😁 The thing is I don’t know where we can watch it.

    https://www.cdramalove.com/ive-fallen-for-you-summary/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=ive-fallen-for-you-summary

@GB , the actress here who played the very young girlfriend of the brother of the main lead actress in Find Yourself is pretty good. She played a junior college student who fell in love with her Professor. 😁 She’s easy to watch and base from the teaser that I saw in YouTube, I think it’ll be a fun easy watch.

  49. @FGB4877: I’m with you on feeling depressed about incomplete endings. I wouldn’t mind a fan fiction at all if it gives me a proper happy resolution 😀

  50. My Holo Love was a pleasant surprise. It was full of familiar kdrama tropes, but that made me smile instead of roll my eyes. Very much like comfort food. Plus, it is short (12 episodes) and has a satisfying ending. Oh, and Yoon Hyun Min is good playing 2 characters.

  51. @agdr03 Thanks for letting us know about the FL in I’ve Fallen for You. I would like to watch it, just need to make the time, by the time it comes with subs.

@nrllee Although I watched part of Cheese in the Trap, I really cannot recall if I said anything about it being slice of life. Thinking back on it now, I don’t think I do consider it slice of life LOL.

I’m not keeping abreast of entertainment news outside of the shows I can get on the Internet, and didn’t know until you asked me, that Emma is coming out as a movie. The preview was quite funny. I would actually like to watch it, and also to have it saved to re-watch. Thanks for the info!

  52. I haven’t thought about Little Women in years.

@Phoenix, ref, ‘feeling horrible about poor Beth dying.’ I remember this from when I was but small. To me Beth represented the ‘good girl’ that my family and culture wanted me to be, so for her not to survive was a shock.

Some time later, my aunt who was a school teacher, gave me the next book, ‘Little Men’ which showed Jo and the Professor’s lives. They opened a boarding school for boys, although some local girls attended as well. I don’t remember much about the story, but I know that I re-read it more than ‘Little Women’. Jo and her husband matched very well and were interesting to me.

  53. @Fern: Thanks for sharing the info about Jo and the Professor’s future. Somehow I never got around to reading the books after Little Women I think I didn’t really want to just because I liked the first book so much and didn’t want the subsequent ones to fall short of the standards set by the first. Good to know they were well matched 🙂

  54. @Pkml3 What I gather from My Drama List is:
    “Drama: I’ve Fallen For You
    Country: China
    Episodes: 24
    Aired: Feb 14, 2020
    Aired On: Friday
    Original Network: iQiyi, iQiyi
    Duration: 45 min.”

I don’t know how quickly shows go from first airing into Netflix or Viki, etc. I hope you can find out. Thanks!

  55. @Snow Flower: Thanks for the My Holo Love recommendation. I think I may like the hero from the snippets I saw on Netflix. I might watch the first episode to see how it goes.

  56. “Sanditon” was at my local bookshop today. I’m interested to read the dialogue now to see how it compares.

  57. Will keep an eye out. Netflix and Viki don’t show it.

Maybe it’ll be shown on YouTube too.

In other news, my husband asked me yesterday if “Crash Landing” was any good. It’s apparently showing up on his Netflix as a “recommended” view. I pretended ignorance. I said if he was looking for a war flick ala “Apocalypse Now” or “Saving Private Ryan”, that wasn’t it. 😈🙂

  58. Read the book/short story a while ago. I’m a huge JA fan – (so much so I went to Bakewell town to stay in the hotel where JA stayed while writing the Pemberley scenes in P&P and traced her footsteps to the big house she’d visited while there (and that was used in the Colin Firth adaptation as Pemberley). I got to stay in the room her sister Cassandra had stayed in but her room is booked solid by similar JA fans. Fun weekend) So you now know how big a fan I am. But I wouldn’t watch Sanditon. The story was so incomplete that there is no way an adaptation is possible – the screenwriter has just taken the bones of her characters and put them in his story. It’s not Jane Austen. Not possible.

  59. I won’t be going to see the new Emma. What can they possibly add at this point? It was so perfectly done by J Lee Miller and Romola. That adaptation cannot be beaten. Its often something I switch on if I’ve had a glass of wine and the kids are abed and I just wander into that colorful world for an hour. (The set design was really good). Ah yes.

I’m not a Little Women fan. I saw the new movie – I love Saoirse Ronan and she was good but the story doesn’t rock me. Never did.

  60. What the heck, nrllee? 😂😂😈 The title is not “Emma”. It’s Emma with a period after the name. 🤦‍♀️

    “Emma.”

Ooohhh. The self-importance of this film! I love it already.

  61. Um. I’ve now read the entire thread and realize I’ve gatecrashed your reunion. 🤭Whoops! But I’m here now so 😝🥳

@nrllee I love what you said about KimGoEun. She is such a brilliant actress – puts so much heart into her characters. She stole Goblin. The male lead was just ..there.. saying his lines with a bit of emotion. She made the show. I think I’ve watched everything she’s ever been in.

I am a LMH admirer – he is also a great actor. Put these two together and kaboom! The awards shows this year will be fun. What will win the Best Drama – so far it’s CLOY imho.

Btw I watched HOLO. It’s I am not a robot without the comedy. I felt it was something that was written a few years ago – the story has been told before lots of times (and better). The story is definitely dated. It’s only ok. It’s well acted produced directed (a few pacing problems as story dried up but not too bad). But I can’t recommend I’m afraid.

  62. @Phoenix, there’s probably a reason that Little Men wasn’t as big a literary hit as Little Women. It was a personal preference, I suppose. I think I liked the bits about cheeky, troubled boys and concerned adults who were willing to work to expose the goodness underneath. I also liked the bits about nature. I think education, social welfare and nature were a big part of Alcott’s life.

I had some other children’s books by Alcott as well among the many old books, given me by my aunt. She sort of spoiled me for contemporary life. 😉

  63. @packmule3, you wrote, “my husband asked me yesterday…” Mind stands in the doorway and shakes his head. Then he goes downstairs and watches an animation about a horse who is also a TV star. 🤣👽

  64. What cartoon features an acting horse? I’m not up-to-date with cartoons.

My husband’s question about CLoY took me by surprise. But equivocation is part of my skill set. lol. I didn’t tell him anything untrue and I let him decide for himself.

I was hoping to introduce him to kdrama with “Vagabond” but nope. The plot of that drama had more holes than swiss cheese. 🙂

  65. @packmule3, the closest to K-drama my husband has been was going to see “Parasite” last weekend with the elder daughter. They both liked it.

My younger daughter is strongly averse to K-culture at this time. The girls are on opposite ends of the spectrum.

  66. I have always been a JA fan, and have watched probably all adaptations of her work. However, this is a tough one to decide on. Do I like it and ejoy watching it? Yes. It is in true JA fashion? Absolutely not. She did not get much down other than character introductions, so this is a VERY loose adaptation. I even think Austen herself would be shocked at some of the scenes portrayed, but I like them just for what they are: an adaptation. It is modern, sensual, and complicated; much more than Jane ever ventured into. If you go in with that in mind, I think you’d enjoy it, but not if you expect a 1995 P&P style adaptation.

  67. I’ve just read “Sanditon”. You are absolutely right, @IcedFireAngel; the male lead only appears 2 pages before it tails off. It’s very much a first draft; I wonder where JA would have gone with the story?

  68. @Smartie, seeing as how you are ‘a huge JA fan – (so much so I went to Bakewell town…’ Have you travelled to Bath or Lyme Regis?

  69. Which version did you like? I’ve only read two of the “Sanditon” continuations, but JA’s mere 11 chapters don’t tell us much of where she was going with it. It was indeed a revolutionary time even for JA, as this is the first character of color she introduced, but I highly doubt she would have taken it as far as the show goes. I’ve not finished the series yet, but had to precondition myself to separate from Jane and her works. It’s a very loose adaptation.

  70. Hi, @IcedFireAngel. I have the Penguin edition which is not a continuation at all. It’s just 65 pages Lol. Mr Sidney Parker passes by in his carriage. There are a number of interesting characters, but my impression is that there is a lot of detail and chat that would be edited out in further drafts by JA if she had continued with it.

  71. “ I won’t be going to see the new Emma. What can they possibly add at this point? It was so perfectly done by J Lee Miller and Romola. That adaptation cannot be beaten.”

I concur wholeheartedly. I just did a rewatch of the 2009 BBC version with JL Miller and Romola. Ahh…it was just as good this viewing. Never gets old. They were perfect. Paltrow’s Emma just annoyed me. She just came across as petulant. Romola was delightful. I loved her Emma. Northam’s Knightley paled in comparison to Miller’s. Miller and Romola’s verbal parrying was bewitching to behold because you knew it was undergirded by a deep friendship and understanding. Both held their own and created this synergy whenever they fought. I always wanted more. ❤️

  72. Both held their own and created this synergy whenever they fought. I always wanted more. ❤️

Oh yes @nrllee. It accurately reflects the relationship JA described. Ah.

@Fern – I’ve done the Bath trip and the pump house etc but I haven’t been to Lyme Regis or to her home with the museum. Yet. They are on my list whenever I can shake the kids off for a weekend – 2030 maybe! I was within 10 miles of Chawton in 2017 but couldn’t stop – kids had to have their two days in LEGO land 😫. You’ve probably done them all – um, which one is the jealous emoji…

  73. Off Topic, ref JA locations

@Smartie, Are you familiar with Kinsale? Lyme Regis is charming in a similar way, but bigger and more vertical down to the sea. It’s less than an hour’s drive from Exeter airport. You could even bring the kids as there are other things to do in the area. If they are old enough to like fossils and dinosaurs, Lyme Regis is famous for being on England’s Jurassic coast. We went on a fossil hunting tour of a nearby beach. There were loads of families and what’s better than legal rock bashing and free souvenirs?
(No, don’t work for their chamber of commerce, lol)

  74. First, a big “Thank You!” to everyone here for your good wishes and sympathy regarding my real life issues. I really appreciate it. My grandmother and my mother haven’t been doing so well lately so I’ve been busy trying to take care of them these past weeks. Things are a lot better now and I’m back to a normal schedule for me. Result- I can devote some more time to the drama watching!

@Phoenix- yes, give My Holo Love a try. I did have to use the FF button a few times, but overall I enjoyed it.

@GB Did you see the Avenue X reviews for I’ve Fallen for You and Some Day Or One Day? I just saw them and wondered if that was the reviewer you were talking about.
After watching her review of I’ve Fallen For You I definitely want to check it out as well. 🙂

From what I could find out, right now I’ve Fallen For You is a IQIYI App exclusive. It’s a VIP drama at IQIYI, so there are 2 release schedules. All 24 episodes are available now for VIP members. For Non VIP, it’s 2 episodes every Friday & Saturday, total of 4 eps a week.

It might come to Viki or Netflix after the drama ends. IQIYI App also just launched a website so it may come to the website after it ends. That’s what happened with The Sweet Girl.

I’m definitely going to check out Taiwan drama Some Day or One Day which is available at Viki. Everyone keeps raving about how good the script is and I like Alice Ke ever since I saw her in Office Girls. Also, the writers for this drama are the same writers for Dr. Cutie! Talk about different genres. People are saying to watch the Viki subs because the story is so complex. Lucky for us, all of the episodes have been edited and released at Viki.

I didn’t know that the new Emma film was already in the theaters. I guess I’m in the minority, but I really liked the Gweneth Paltrow film version. I watched a little bit of the kate Beckinsale TV version years back, but I couldn’t get into it and so stopped watching. I will now check out the Romola Garai version.

  75. @Table122000

@GB Did you see the Avenue X reviews for I’ve Fallen for You and Some Day Or One Day? … After watching her review of I’ve Fallen For You I definitely want to check it out as well. 🙂

Yes, that’s the reviewer. She made them sound so nice to watch that I put them on my to watch list. There are so many cdramas to choose from, so I had to make a decision on how to choose, and I’ve decided to go along with AvenueX at least for now. So far, I find her reviews detailed enough and her tastes are not too far off from mine.

From what I could find out, right now I’ve Fallen For You is a IQIYI App exclusive. …..It might come to Viki or Netflix after the drama ends.

Thanks! I’ll wait a bit and check again.

  76. @Phoenix , oh how nice to know that you were a Jude Deveraux fan too. I got crazy with her and must have read most of her novels. ☺️

@Table122000 , that Taiwanese drama sounds interesting especially because she’s the same writer of Dr Cutie. It is great that it’s all in Viki already. Thanks 😊

  77. @GB- Yes, I like Avenue X reviews as well. I don’t always agree with her, but I like her reviewing style and I’ve found some good C Dramas from her reviews.

@agdr03- So far I have watched the first episode of TW drama Some Day or One Day and I am enjoying it. I like the mystery elements of the script and it will be interesting to see how the time travel plays out. Frankly, I find it amazing that this show was written by the same writers of Dr. Cutie because the 2 dramas are so different in tone and style. But both are very watchable. And yes, it’s great to have the drama at Viki for easy access as well as the “Viki subs” treatment. I think that Viki really made an effort for clarity which I appreciate.

And count me in as a Jude Deveraux fan as well! Loved her books when I was younger, especially her medieval historical romances. I think she’s moved on to more general fiction type of books now rather than romance novels. I’ll have to go and see what books by her are available next time I go to the library.

  78. @GB and anyone else interested in I’ve Fallen For You

I just checked and it is now available with English subs at the IQYI App Website to watch on your PC!
IMPORTANT: The website does not have a search function, so be sure to bookmark the Showpage link so that you can return and watch the episodes each week as they are released.
Schedule: 2 episodes every Friday & Saturday, 4 eps a week total
They are currently up to ep. 8

  79. @Table122000 I read the reviews and synopsis of Some Day or One Day and found the mystery element and storyline quite intriguing too. I’m going to check it out next weekend I think.

And I liked Jude Devereux’s medieval romances too! Coincidentally, I remember some interesting time travel romances 😊

  80. Thanks @Table122000! I’ll see if I can find I’ve Fallen for You with Eng subs. If not, I don’t mind waiting a bit.

  81. Aww, you’re another fan of Jude Deveraux @Table122000 🥰 Yes! It was the medieval historical romances that I loved of her. I should go back and re-read some of her books. ☺️

Thanks for the links on I’ve Fallen For You. I’ll give it a try definitely. 😊

  82. @GB- The link I gave for I’ve Fallen for You has English subs for the episodes. Not sure why you can’t access them. I’ll give you the other link I have, but it may be geo-restricted. You will need to click on the link to see if it’s available in your country.

@agdr03 @Phoenix- Hope you enjoy the dramas. I’ll be interested to read your insights. Yes, the Jude Deveraux books are still enjoyable reading. You are right, @Phoenix, she was one of the first romance authors to do “time travel” romances. A Knight In Shining Armor remains a classic in the genre. I wasn’t sure if she was still writing or had retired, but a quick internet search led me to her website and she is still writing books with a new book to be released in march 2020. Not a romance, but a murder mystery. She writes books in between her world cruise trips, according to her website. She’s currently on a cruise of South America and posted photos of Easter Island.

  83. Thanks for the info about Jude Deveraux @Table122000 🙂 It’s nice to know she’s still writing novels even if it’s not romantic ones. I will definitely pick up one of her novels and read it again.

I’ll start on Some Day or One Day tonight. I’ll let you know how I go 🙂

  84. Thanks @Table122000 I’m able to watch it with subs from your link. Ridiculous, good fun and wacky!

  85. @GB- So glad the link is working for you! I was able to watch the first episode and I agree-definitely wacky fun.

  86. @Table122000: Yes, I remember that book my Jude Devereux which you have mentioned. There was another time travel one called ‘Remembrance’ too. I think I read them in high school or college. I didn’t lnow she still wrote novels!

I’m very interested in Some Day or One Day. Will start the first episode tomorrow.@agdr03: Do let me know what is your opinion about it.

@Table122000: Thanks for sharing the link for Emg sub of ‘I’ve fallen for you”. I’ll check that out once I’m through with at least first few episodes of Some day. Hopefully I’ll get more time for my drama watching now, unlike in the last few months 🙁

  87. Hi all! Missed this thread. RL caught up to me. Glad you liked Cheese. I highly recommend it to everyone – a shame to miss a brilliant 3/4 because 1/4 is average. Started Ive Fallen For You. The premise of her marrying him to look for a birthmark was done first, and done well and it was very funny, in cdrama Perfect Couple, a great series. This series looks fun Too bad I can’t access IQiqi on my tablet it seems. Shout out to my Venezualan friend, hoping things are going better there! And yes, finally OT, I heard about the Sanditon ending so Im not watching till I can find it easily online.

  88. “ Hi all! Missed this thread. RL caught up to me. Glad you liked Cheese. I highly recommend it to everyone – a shame to miss a brilliant 3/4 because 1/4 is average. ”

O hey there @Barbrey! Yes I loved Cheese. The last 1/4 was…just strange…I needed more insights into the complex character that was YooJeong. He needed to be fleshed out with more background. Infinitely more so than the straight shooting piano playing InHo? But for some bizarre reason the PD felt the need to give us more and more scenes of InHo playing the piano as opposed to scenes which would’ve explained YJ’s weird Jekyll Hyde character. I was especially disappointed that everyone had an epilogue bar YooJeong (and he was the main lead)? He was shafted? 🙄. Nevertheless it was very good regardless. The leads were brilliant. Park HaeJin gives THE BEST HUGS. He has been added to my Oppa list. 😂

  89. Do we have anybody from Venezuela? Ah! You mean FGB4877? I keep forgetting where everyone is located. 🤦‍♀️

Check pbs.org for Sanditon. That’s our public broadcasting station. The last time I checked everything was there, except the last episode.

  90. If I had read these comments first, I probably would not have stuck it out with Sanditon, although the actors and costumes are terrific. I didn’t mind Andrew Davies taking such liberties with Austen’s text since I supposed it was a modern take on Austen (nudity! copulation!). But why did he have to end it so unhappily? When I finished it a few minutes ago, I yelled at the TV, “That’s not a Jane Austen ending!” I like JA because I know there will be a happy ending for all, not heartbreak.

It took me awhile to watch it because I had set it to record on my DVR, not realizing that my DVR only holds 5 episodes of anything at a time and it erased the first three episodes to make way for the last three. So I finally found it via the PBS Passport app and watched the first three episodes on my iPad. It was good company while I cooked or washed dishes.

There was supposed to be a second season—but it wasn’t a hit in England. If it had been a hit on PBS they might have brought it back. Once word got out that the ending wasn’t happy, I don’t think Jane-ites watched it though…

  91. Thanks for the report, BethB.

May I suggest watching Emma. (It’s Emma with a period) to get rid of the bitter aftertaste? It’s out in theaters. While the BBC version with Jonny Lee Miller is still better, this movie version had an interesting scene right after the “you’re not my brother” dance. Mr Knightley realized that he was in love (or lust) then. It wasn’t in the book, but I liked it anyway.

  92. Well… I kept thinking about Sanditon after posting my comment about hating the ending, so I went back through and rewatched the portions that showed the supposed love story between Charlotte and Sidney. And then I wrote something about it on Medium, in case anyone wants to check it out (I am not a Sidney fan, as it turns out): https://link.medium.com/AQl5dq8FM4 . (I would love to see a second season that takes Charlotte on to the next phase of her life, away from him.)

  93. @BethB, I haven’t watched it but checked out your blog anyway. Very nice. Thank you for the post!

  94. I read your article, BethB, and you convinced me that Charlotte dodged a bullet there. I laughed when you wrote that Sidney is an asshat. I’ll stay away from this series and wait until there’s a second season (if ever) in the horizon. But I’ll be rooting for Anybody-But-Sidney.

    Thanks for sharing!
