A Piece of Your Mind: Ep 8 The Cliffhanger

I know I shouldn’t be skipping through episodes and jumping from one drama to another, but I need to clear my drama schedule before this Friday’s “The King: Eternal Monarch.”

But this last scene in Episode 8 intrigued me. What was in HER mind?

The Viki subs:

HW: Come anytime if you want a good night’s sleep because no one will use that blanket. Because I can’t go down to your semi-basement room.

She was startled of course. And wondered whether she heard him right and understood what he was saying.

HW: I just hear exactly what you are thinking. What you are thinking is “That’s right.”

Here are my receipts to show you that I wasn’t making up things. Viki really subbed it that way.

Frankly, that sub didn’t make much sense to me. According to sub, SW was thinking: “Yeaaah. That’s right.” Meaning, she was agreeing that he couldn’t spend time in tiny basement, much less sleep in her tiny room, like she could easily do so at his house.

This implied that she was concerned about the improprieties of being with a man in a small confined space like her bedroom. And HW understood her misgivings and he agreed with her.

I found the sub here unsatisfactory so I went to Kissasian.

HW: No one will use that blanket, so come whenever you want to sleep well.Since I can’t go to the semi-basement.

She looked startled. She didn’t know if she understood him correctly. She was wondering whether her interpretation = his meaning.

HW: I can hear the thoughts in your head. It is what you’re thinking. You’re right.

To me, Kissasian’s version was better. HW saw her puzzled expression and teased her for it.

But…but…but what was Seowoo thinking? lol. Do we really know? HW presumed to know what she was thinking.

This is a declarative statement: “No one will use that blanket.”
This is an invitation: “So come whenever you want to sleep well.”
This is an innuendo: “Since I can’t go the semi-basement.”

And this isn’t a cliche: He’s making her heart race.

His innuendo is heart-fluttering because:

a. he was acknowledging that they’re both attracted to each other,
b. he took a simple sentence and made a sexual connotation with it, and
c. he was teasing her that it was her fault if she had something ELSE on her mind.

Naturally she would be confused. He was telling her that while she could sleep over at his place, he couldn’t go over at her place. Certainly, there wasn’t any physical impediment stopping him from visiting her room. So, why couldn’t wouldn’t he go come over?

Hmmm… I wonder why?

His monologue left her speechless because it implied that he was available and ready for a romance. He was ready to “level up.”

But he wanted HER to think that it was all her idea and that she was the one who FIRST thought of him sleeping over. He was only following her lead.

And the fact that he could stand there smiling while she was completely befuddled had me admiring this dude. Considering that he never really dated Jisoo, he got mad skillz. He’d been successful in unsettling her and pushing her to think of him in a different light when he wanted to.

Here’s that look on Ha Won’s face that says butter won’t melt in his mouth. Isn’t that cute? lol.

  1. I loved this scene!

We have one week to imagine all we want :p

The ML is so swoony, he always said these things that could be so cringey nit surprisly not when it’s him like the “half-look”. I liked the idea.

  2. I thought he just meant SW can sleep over in his bed in his house but he still sleeps on the sofa. LOL. That’s the innocent in me but then when he said, I couldn’t go to your semi basement, then it became different.

That smile was heart fluttering! 🙂

I think HW reassured her with this conversation because she was supposed to see him before but when she was running on the way to his house, she dropped AI-Jinsoo (she found it at his apartment in a cabinet and she took it without him knowing) and when she picked it up, she turned the other way and went back. She didn’t know though that HW saw her while she was standing holding AI-Jisoo.

  3. So smooth. Sigh. 😘. That’s how you should do it. None of this – let’s just have a bed scene. The power of suggestion. Titillating. I loved how her catharsis at her hometown was witnessed by HW just like she witnessed his grief at the cafe. I like this character that CSB is playing. I couldn’t stand her character in Where Stars Land.

Now if we can only work out what the deal is with Jabba spawn ruining the bridge party I would be happy.

I am getting tired of Grouchy Pianist and Ditzy Gardener. EunSoo deserves so much better but why was she with the loser in the first place? 🙄.

  4. Same.

Chae Soo Bin (?) was previously on my “banned” list of actresses because a. she overplayed her aegyo on that robot show, AND b. her character in “Where Stars Land” sucked lemons.

I didn’t think she was capable of choosing the right projects for herself so I banned her. 😈

But you know me. I’ll give second chances. And although the script of this kdrama is disorganized and unmethodical (and you can see it so clearly because we’re watching Hospital Playlist at the same time 😂), I’m rooting for her to succeed in this drama with what’s-his-name actor.

  5. Waiting for my weekly fix of this drama to get English subtitles. In the meantime, I’ve been pondering what is a headscratcher for me: SW running to HW when he asked her to be with him so he can sleep, and also because he misses her, but thinking to herself, “…If, I mean really ‘IF’…If Ha Won is gradually forgetting you, Ji Soo, then I will, I will remember you as much as he forgets.” Then AI JiSoo drops out of her purse, she collects it off the ground, checks it for obvious damage, thinks a bit to herself, then decides to return to the studio instead of meeting HW at his house. Oookaaaay. This is the opposite of her exhortation to HW to forget JiSoo.

Later, when talking with Unni, she does seem to recognize that she’s in danger of sabotaging her budding relationship with HW.

SW: For me, maybe because it’s because I’ve never had a good relationship before, but whenever it looks like things are going well, a hundred reasons why it won’t go well comes to my mind.
Unni: Indeed, it’s Han Seo Woo. Your repertoire of discouraging yourself is bottomless. Tell me one thing among those hundred reasons.
SW: If feels as if I’m intercepting the love which was meant for somebody else.

I fear some kind of noble idiocy from SW, but maybe I shouldn’t. I do like the way she and HW lean toward open, sincere conversations about their feelings. And SW seems committed to thinking through issues; for instance, when she’s in the studio and recalling HW’S feeling-without-contact hand experiment, she thinks to herself, “He asked me to stay…I told him I would stay for him…Then staying for him is fine. He asked for help, so I just have to help him. I stopped myself from going because the device fell? What kind of novel am I writing by myself?” In other words, stop overthinking it.

This reminds me of Unni’s words when she and Soup Guy had their breakup conversation: “You should just love. What else do you need?…Well, then how far do you have to think? Whether marrying this person or not, whether you will be a good dad or not, how can you estimate such things in advance and worry about them already? You just love a woman if you like her now, and you get married if you keep liking her.” She’s advocating allowing a relationship space and time to develop organically.

I hope this drama, in the last four episodes, steadily makes headway toward a happy ending for the main leads. I need heartwarming fluff right now.

Episode 9 is at 30% English sub completion. Gotta exercise patience.
