A Piece of Your Mind: Ep 9 Quick Takes

Episode 9 was brutal. I don’t know which one I want to kill first.

My candidates of victims:

1. Hoon

He’s the living proof that bad people don’t need guns to kill. A letter opener suffices.

What gave him the right to pry into other people’s private lives? And who is he to play god with Ha Won’s life?

2. The Depressed Pianist

Knock knock.
Who’s there?
Your guilty conscience.
Why hello there! Please come in.

His guilty conscience is the one he needs to reconcile with. Not dead Jisoo.

Come on, writer. Stop dragging his story. I don’t want to see his scrawny face on my screen anymore. Stop trying to make him into some sort of sexy, brooding pianist because it ain’t gonna happen. He is no Chopin, the original brooding heartthrob in the musical world.

This is Chopin. His cheekbones were deadly.

3. The Ditzy Gardener

Like, “Back off, old hag! I know you want to be laid. But now’s NOT the time.”

Her attempts to be “there” for the Depressed Pianist gross me out. He’s heading for a breakdown and she’s taking advantage of this weak moment to inveigle her way into his heart by showing that she’s on his side. No matter what, she’ll support him.

Creepy hand-holding.

What she’s doing here is trying to step into the dead wife’s shoes and paint the dead wife as unreasonable and unforgiving.

Like this: “Ooohh. Your wife didn’t understand you. She didn’t want to take your side. Oh you’re right. She’s a disloyal wife. But don’t worry. I’ll be here for you. I’ll take your side. You really didn’t do anything wrong. There. There.”

See that? This Ditzy Gardener needs an ounce of brain matter in her hippy, “flower power!” skull.

She  should have considered that IF his own wife, who had been devoted to him for so many years, just upped and left him then there must have been a pretty darn good reason. His LOVING wife’s non-acceptance and departure should have been a red flag to this Ditzy Gardener.

The kindest and the RIGHT thing for her to do was to tell Depressed Pianist to seek help from a grief counselor.

Come on, writer. You should know that.

4. Seowoo

I like the girl but she broke laws.

From the Mosaic law: Thou shall not steal.
From the law of holes: If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.
From the law of rebound romance: Don’t dwell on each other’s exes and past romance.

She stole the gadget. But she compounded her mental lapse when she kept on using the gadget. Talking to the AI Jisoo isn’t psychologically healthy. It’s like she’s compulsively picking off the scab of an old wound. She doesn’t need to establish a connection with it when she has real human people around her to gel with.

She’s giving herself 101th reason for this relationship to fail.

Just stop.

Ha Won already gave the AI a good send -off.

Come on, writer. This is cheating.

Of course, the AI JiSoo would be able to access Public Records and figure out who JiSoo’s husband was. Once the pianist’s name of the recorded music was revealed, AI Jisoo would have made connections with a search. That’s just like me doing a google search.

But it’s a big leap for the AI to know what her husband did to Won’s mother because that confidential piece of information wouldn’t have been downloaded onto her memory bank by either Ha Won or SeoWoo.

Big leap fail.

5. The writer

Goodness!

How can she write so many flawed characters and have them all intersect in the same time and space? I knew it: her penchant for “coincidences” will be her downfall.

This is weak writing. That’s why viewers are fast-forwarding to the scenes with Ha Won and Seo Woo, and pretending as if the exasperating behavior of the other characters don’t matter.

She should have stuck with the core theme: a rebound love for Ha Won and Seo Woo… or “How Ha Won Got His Groove Back” after his first love died. The side plot with the Depressed Pianist and the Ditzy Gardener overpowered the sweet scenes of Won and SeoWoo and dragged the whole drama down.

Now do one for Ha Won, writer.

My decision: I’ll go with the writer first.

You got a choice, Electric,

She wants “A Piece of Your Mind.” Then I’m giving her a piece of my mind. lol.

  1. Agreed 100%.
And episode 10 starts even worse.
The Gardener and SeoWoo join Hoon in trying to play god with HaWon.
Well.. SeoWoo I somehow feel is not that bad. Her reasoning I buy. At least, because she has a strong connection with JiSoo, she’s thinking of her and what she would have wanted, if she would have wanted the letters to reach HaWon or not.
She’s not just messing with HaWon life choosing for him what’s best for him to know or not.
Am I seeing it differently in her case because I’m biased towards her or does it make sense?

  2. Okay, I’m not watching Ep 10. I’m not going down that rabbit hole.

But based on your comment, this is what I have to say:

    1. First the AI Jisoo is NOT a person. Its feelings do not matter here. It does not have any rights.

HaWon’s need to know overrides AI’s feelings.

    2. But what about the dead Jisoo?

Question: Do the dead have a right to privacy? 🙂

My answer: Did Anne Frank’s father allow her diary to be published after her death? Didn’t the Church publish St Theresa of Calcutta’s letters? She wanted her personal correspondence destroyed after her death out fear that “people will think more of me, less of Jesus.”

Post-mortem privacy is becoming tricky because we’re in the digital age. But general speaking, existing laws do not extend the right of privacy to the dead. Medical records, for instance, which are kept private when an individual is alive, become accessible to family members once the individual is deceased.

Legally, Jisoo’s diaries, journals, potteries, plants, all her possessions became the property of her estate which was overseen by her husband. Her husband could do anything he wanted with them. That’s why he gave away her plants, right?

But the letters she sent to Grandma Moon belong to Grandma Moon. Dead Jisoo had authorship, but Grandma Moon had ownership. Grandma Moon gave both the Ditzy Gardener and Ha Won access to those letters.

Now, we know that both the Gardener and SeoWoo have conflicts of interest here. They both have a vested interest in keeping Ha Won in the dark.

    A. The Gardener

Does the Gardener already know that Jisoo’s husband is her love interest? I don’t know…and I don’t want to know, really. I’m tired of their stupid romance.

If she already knows the identity of Jisoo’s husband, then I say she’s protecting her love interest from Won’s wrath. She doesn’t want Won to read the letter because she’s protecting her love.

Won’s need to know the truth > her crush

If she doesn’t yet know the identity of Jisoo’s husband, the Gardener STILL can’t keep the letter from Won out of fear that he’ll do something criminal.

Won’s need to know the truth > her fears

    1. Ha Won is an adult. He makes his decision.
    2. Her lack of trust in Ha Won’s moral compass is disturbing.
    3. She can sit down with Ha Won and discuss rationally with him the pros and cons of his future actions…like normal adults.
    4. They can consult a lawyer, lol.

    B. SeoWoo

Does she know about the existence of the letter?

If so, it’s none of her business.
If not, then the next question here is who is she really protecting?

    1. Is she protecting the AI Jisoo?
The AI Jisoo is not a person. She can’t act on behalf of a computer program, a ghost or an ARTIFICIAL intelligence. (Dang it! Is there anybody thinking straight in this kdrama?)

    2. Is she protecting the dead Jisoo?
She can’t presume to know what the dead Jisoo wanted. She isn’t psychic.

They were only acquaintances, at best. Ha Won can counter-argue that he knows dead Jisoo the longest and the most real because they grew up together. Jisoo had called him up wanting him to go to Norway with her. Jisoo was protecting him. She had his interest at heart. If she knew that Ha Won was going to self-destruct from NOT knowing about the truth, Jisoo would tell him.

Also, the dead has no right to privacy.

    3. Is SeoWoo protecting Ha Won?

Then she should start acting like it. Her loyalty is with the living, not with the dead. Like with the Gardener, her lack of trust in Ha Won’s decision-making is disturbing.

The living Ha Won > the dead Jisoo
Ha Won > the Depressed Pianist
Son > Murderer (everybody’s skirting around this)

Ha Won’s right to know supersedes dead Jisoo’s right to privacy. Sure, to reveal contents of the letter will cause problems for the husband. That’s the whole point here: the husband got away and he should be held accountable.

Ha Won needs to know the whole truth before he arrives at his (incomplete or not) conclusions and acts upon them. Really, it’s bothersome that none of the people surrounding Ha Won, Hoon, the Gardener, SeoWoo and even Grandma Moses seem to trust Ha Won to do the adult thing here.

Really, how could the writer mess up the logic here?

  3. You’ve listed all the reasons why I just want a ‘half look’ with JHI after episode 10.

The answer HW was looking for all those years was with the pianist and he had that chance but gardener blocked him. 🤦🏻‍♀️😒 So much for wanting to ‘kill him’ when she knows who it is.

Yeah between SW, Hoon and gardener, they couldn’t trust the adult HW in making a decision for himself and they all failed him.

  4. So does the Gardener know Jisoo’s husband is, in Ep 10? 😈

The problem with kdramas like this is people who can’t weigh ethical, moral, emotional, (I’m not considering legal bec that’s a specialized field), logical, and psychological concerns will just end up going with what “FEELS” right.

    It normalizes affective reasoning. Ugh.

Writers like this need more maturity and profoundity.

  5. So does the Gardener know Jisoo’s husband is, in Ep 10? 😈

Yeah. SW saw a picture of Jisoo and husband and she made the connection then and she called gardener because they were about to meet in HW’s house. 😔 She said to gardener they can’t meet. 😒

Gardener tells pianist he can’t see HW then later on when HW was at studio, he opened the door and saw pianist there but gardener closed it. 🙄

    Sigh.

  6. Well, it’s a good thing there’s only 12 episodes. Can you imagine if this writer extended this for 4 more episodes with the same outcome? SW, the Gardener and Hoon all playing minor deities?

    🤢

They should inform HW so HW can make an informed decision. He’ll hate them for keeping this secret and blind-siding him.

  7. Yeah, it’s good it only has 2 episodes left. No I wouldn’t want them to play deities on HW. He’s a good guy but even with his Mom’s tragedy, he’s living well and has good morals.

I want SW to apologise to him as well for trying to keep it and for taking AI Jisoo. 😒

  8. Not only that. SW is copying the Depressed Pianist mistake here. She can’t keep a secret like this and expect a relationship to work out. It’s going to eat her up.

    🤮 Trashy writer.

  9. Oh dear, so true.

If anything I’m really liking the 2 ost on this one. Those two, I’ll take with me. 😊

How’s the Find Me In Your Memory? Is it good? I’m seeing some insta posts and it’s intriguing me. The leads look good together.

  10. It’s alright. The guy reminds me of Chun Jungmyung, the guy in Fluttering Alert. He’s an ahjussi but a decent one. He resists the girl’s crush on him but he’s protective of her.

I’m not sure if it’s love yet. More like caring for now.

  11. Thanks. Oh yeah I can the CJM in that guy. 😊 I really like the girl because of Temped. She was evil there but loves her Mom.

I might find some cdramas next. There’s a few out but haven’t looked properly.

Should we watch HP together tomorrow with everyone that’s available? 😄

  12. I’ll know tomorrow. I’ve a phone conference late in the afternoon so my brains may be fried after that. lol.

    I’ll open a thread later.

The girl is good, too. She catches on quickly. But her voice bugs me a bit. It’s like an artificially high voice. Breathy, too. She wasn’t like this in “Tempted.” But her character isn’t ditzy. Just feminine, so the guy’s protectiveness comes out.

He’s older too so there’s that. But yes, he reminds me of CJM so I like him already.

    Will eat dinner now.

  13. Ep9 lost me. I want to just watch sweet moments between our OTP. I am tired of Grumpy Pianist and Ditzy Gardener is driving me up the wall. I think I will wait till it’s finished and then watch the sweet scenes.

  14. Enjoy dinner. ☺️

No worries about HP. I might look at FMIYM then. I’ll let you know about her voice. Thanks 😊

  15. “SW 2. Is she protecting the dead Jisoo?
She can’t presume to know what the dead Jisoo wanted. She isn’t psychic.”

Yeah I don’t get her reasoning behind resurrecting JS “back from the dead” after HW already gave her a beautiful send off “Rest in Peace”. Does she want JS’s blessing? I thought she already got it in the beginning when JS played Cupid? Why dig her up again? Like self sabotage? And like you said, she’s dead. Sounds callous but it’s how it is. Sigh turning the device back on didn’t make much sense to me. Neither did stealing it. She had the opportunity to come clean to HW when she tried to put it back but she botched that opportunity. 🙄

  16. “Ha Won already gave the AI a good send-off.”

Thank you for your thoughts, you’ve helped me see I made the right decision to drop this after episode 7.

The moment I found out the AI was making a comeback, the drama became distasteful again. I only hung around after 5 because of that farewell, which I thought was very appropriate and overdue. I’d already been fast-forwarding all scenes without either of the leads.

The relationship feels like a creppy, co-dependent rebound, and did not make for a satisfying romance, either. I tried, it was not meant to be.

Because of your write-ups I’ve started watching Hospital Playlist and I’m so glad I did! Thank you for that as well – I didn’t know just how much it would remind me of Reply 1988, one of my favorites.
