Alice: Ep 3 Quick Takes

I’m having “The King: Eternal Monarch” post-drama/post-traumatic flashbacks with the math and people switching places with their original selves.

While waiting for Episode 4, here’s my take on Episode 3.

1. Who’s this man?

Well, he has the book now. He’s the unidentified guy running away here. No… I don’t think Officer Go was chasing him. In fact, I think they work together.

2. Team Leader Oh (she’s female) is the rogue in the Alice organization.

She was the one who updated MH on Taeyi’s status. She said that Taeyi was “married and living well.” She covered up that Taeyi was actively hunted and killed.

I can see her motive for disliking MH, though.

MH: Why hasn’t the customer 1011 departed yet?
Oh: 1011, are you talking about Eunsoo’s mother?

There! She personalizes her interaction with her clients. There’s a logical reason why clients are given numbers instead of called by their names. But Manager Oh identified the client, not by her given name, but by her relationship. She’s “Eunsoo’s mom.” This tells me that she isn’t able to maintain emotional distance.

This is dangerous because she can be influenced and manipulated to break the protocol and rules for a “higher” cause in the name of family relationships.

Really now. There should have been a personality test given to the applicants, new hires, and employees at Alice to assess whether their character traits are best suited for certain jobs.

MH: According to the schedule, wasn’t her departure supposed to be last week?
Oh: She wasn’t feeling well so she postponed the departure.

Here, either she can lie with a straight face or she’s that naïve that she’d fall for her client’s excuses without looking for ulterior reasons.

MH: She’s just giving excuses because she doesn’t want to leave her daughter. It’s not like this is the first time dealing with this kind of customer. Why do you keep caving in?

I understand MH’s frustration. If she were on my staff, I’d judge her incompetent. However, I find MH rather naïve too because he didn’t consider the possibility that she’s deliberately sabotaging their mission.

Oh: Wanting to stay with her dead daughter a little while longer…You really don’t understand?
MH: I do understand. I understand but…you should also know to cut off when necessary.

This is what he did to Taeyi. He cut her off and didn’t look back.

Oh: It must be easy for you, MinHyuk. It’s hard for me.
MH: Uncontrolled emotion is the most dangerous. I’ll take care of it.
Oh: (looking troubled)

3. Are they the same guy?

Guy A

Guy B

They look alike to me, but I’ve poor facial recognition when it comes to non-Caucasian and non-African American faces. It is what it is.

After MH had his talk with Manager Oh, Eunsoo’s mother was shown looking at this phone number.

She must have found out from Manager Oh that MH had ordered her departure, so she got in touch with another group who “accommodated” her wish to stay in 2020 with her daughter. The other group had no compunction about killing people to get the desired outcome for their clients. This Guy A is a mercenary just like that the man sent to steal the book from Dr. Jang.

Guy B works for the police. But it’s possible that they’re the same person, that is, Guy A was sent to infiltrate the police.

4. And no… these two Taeyis aren’t the same.

Classroom/Professor Taeyi admitted that she saw a drone. But then, how come she didn’t recognize JG when he entered her classroom? She should have mentioned seeing him get hit by the truck and asked if he was okay after the accident.

I hope JG figured this out soon, like he figured out that there were two Eunsoo’s moms walking around.

And the reason JG thought Classroom Taeyi was his mom — despite the big difference in personality — was that his mom was also good in physics. Ha! That was a rather late but convenient reveal, show!

5. The police

My theory: The man who has the book, and Officer Go (JG’s mentor) work together. The man with the book called up Officer Go to visit Eunsoo’s mom.

Officer Go was bowing to him.

For now, I don’t know which side to put them in: the good guys side or bad guys side; the pro-Alice or anti-Alice faction.

But Officer Go definitely knew who Yoon Taeyi.  He was told JG had gone out to meet Yoon Tae Yi, and he looked bothered, too. He then took JG out for dinner.

I think they were in contact with Taeyi and that’s how she got her ID as Park SunYoung so easily. Taeyi gave them the book because she was helping them.

6. Do Yeon, the wannabe-girlfriend

It’s cute that she was the reason that JG had to find his apartment. She literally and figuratively wanted to “move in” with JG.

Update:

No. Do Yeon isn’t the daughter of Officer Go. But she can charm Officer Go. She calls him “father-in-law” because he acts like the surrogate father of JG, and she wants to marry JG. lol.

I hope her insecurity won’t be a factor in the story. I don’t mind her jealousy as a comic relief, but if, in the end, she turns Judas and hands over JG to the bad guys simply because of unrequited love…ugh! I will rate that as a misogynistic trope.

********

Updated:

After I’ve written this long comment to nrllee, I’ve to mention the tears.

Here’s the comment so you don’t need to scroll down.

the truck scene is different in Episodes 1 and 2.

I prefer Ep 1. In Ep 1, she moved before the teardrop, and before everybody else was unfrozen. This scene made it looked like she wanted to approach (because she recognized him) but she stopped herself (because she remembered her “dying promise.”) Also, this demonstrated more clearly that SHE was the one who stopped time to protect him.

In Ep 2, she paused in time, and remain frozen like the others, till the teardrop fell, and then she moved.

But I didn’t give this much importance because I saw it as one continuous stream, like this:

She saw that JG was about to be hit, she paused time, she took a few steps towards him, decided against it, (that’s the Ep 1 version) so she pretended to freeze, too. That’s why Episode 2 showed us her being frozen till the teardrop fell, and then she moved and pretended that she was frozen like the others.

Do you get me? 🙂

The tears of JG is key here. THIS Fountain Taeyi is the continuation of his mom/Park SunYoung. Because the tears of her son JG could move her…literally and figuratively speaking.

The Classroom Taeyi/Professor Taeyi doesn’t understand his tears. But this mom could.

That’s why Fountain Taeyi and Eunsoo’s mom were together at that place (hill? ampitheater?) They both have a common bond: motherhood.

For me, the tears are the litmus test in this story. JG was moved to pity his mother when he saw her wiping her tears as she was scrubbing the graffiti off the wall. But this time around, JG’s teardrop broke the frozen time.

    (SPOILER)

Uh-oh…I am halfway through Ep3 and it’s getting into that TKEM Euler’s number Zone again…time travel is Physics…and…physics and me have a love hate relationship…you will get what I mean when you watch it…I know that understanding the whole space-time thing is probably crucial to getting at the fundamentals behind Alice…but I am not sure my finite mind is going to be able to grasp these abstract concepts… Minkowski (space-time) is mentioned… as is TY’s spin on how the drones fly…anti-gravity…which is why they have no propellers and I guess why everything floated when JG pressed the time card.

After Ep3 it’s obvious that the program is flawed. MH seems hellbent to keep Alice going regardless? He spouted the rules of the no murder clause to the DongSaeng who went back to kill his older brother but then he was ready kill JG himself after retrieving the time card? 🤔.

Like PM3 I think there are 2 TYs. Prof TY and another 2050TY. She was with the 2050EunSoo’s mom looking down from a hill?

I broke down the truck of doom scene

I think it’s strange that JG can still move when everyone else freezes? 🤔. Why is he exempt?

  3. There’s actually a total of THREE Taeyis in the story.

    1. The dead Taeyi aka Park SunYoung with the omega tattoo on her neck. She is dead DEAD.
    2. The Taeyi who was standing by the fountain when she and JG met. I’m calling her Fountain Taeyi for now.
    3. The Taeyi who’s a physics professor.

lol. Who knows? By the end of Episode 4, we might have more.

But it is weird that she was standing by 2050Eunsoo’s mom looking down. Could she be the one who gave the number to call to Eunsoo’s mom? Could she be working with Manager Oh?

Heh! @pkml3 I had the exact same screenshot of the 3 men on the streets outside Tae Yi’s home on the night she died. Well, Det Go and the other guy, Seok O Won (From the Kaiper Institute of Advanced Science according to AsianWiki) might have been there at the same time or not, it’s not entirely clear although show has them in a single frame. 3rd white haired guy in the middle, we assume, is the killer of TY. Maybe just a gun for hire?

If the drones were from Alice, and had been scouting out TY, and if the the killer had been hired by Alice, then it was something not widely known in Alice. Either that, or there’s another party that wanted her dead. MH was lied to and kept in the dark. He is being manipulated.

Just as there are 3 or more TY’s, I’m beginning to think that there are 3 or more Sun Hees (mum of Eun Soo). The 2020 mum, the cold silent woman behind TY and the one who looks old.

Now that there are more than 1 of the same person existing in the same timeline and working at cross purposes from their own past or future selves!!! (So convoluted *eyeroll*), one of my weird conjectures may not be entirely off.

Conjecture: Someone in the future wants to sabotage Alice. Tae Yi was chosen (maybe by another version of herself!!) when she was expecting the child, so that she’d stay on in 1992, and her mission changed from saving Alice by getting the Book for Alice, to hiding the Book and living quietly with her son.

The ones who knew the contents of the Book, knew what Tae Yi would do and wanted her to carry out her destiny at the right time in the past. Telling TY not to read the Book was a paradoxical way to get her to read it and know her ‘fate’, which would make her carry out what they destined for her. However, they did not anticipate that the last page would be lost. Hence she lived out her life meekly and quietly, thinking to not excite interest.

It’s noteworthy that the drones could find her easily enough, which could mean that they had her on their radar all along.

Questions: What purpose was served by killing TY in 2010?

How did the book get passed to Seok O Won?

Interesting thought of yours @pkml3 – about Det Go and Seok O Won … it’s possible because we see Seok reading the book about the mother and immediately Det Go gets the call and visits her. If Det Go is really in with Seok O Won, how much does he know about time travel? He seemed to be at a loss over the tiny bullet, although he also seems to find Tae Yi’s name familiar.

  6. Eeeks! Don’t tell me this drama has clones, too.

Whatever. I just don’t want this possibility of multiple TYs be an excuse for JG to have a romantic relationship with TY. That’s gross!

  7. Growing Beautifully (GB)

@pkml3 Nope I don’t think show is going to go that way with TY and JG. I see them as a mother and son team, or as JG would see it. She’ll always be Mum to him no matter what TY and Do Yeon say.

As for Guy A and Guy B, they do not look like the same person to me.

I too had thought from Episode 1 ending that she’d taken a few steps before the tear fell. Then I checked with Episode 2 and thought maybe Episode 1 had truncated the scene. With Ep 1’s version, I too thought that TY had been the one to pause time, to keep JG from being too badly hit by that truck.

‘Eye roll’ scenes – IE scenes that made my eyes roll. JG had a fractured rib, but not only does he evince no emotion, he also seems to feel no pain. He leaves hospital and is being slammed by the car behind as well as slamming his car into MH’s car. He’s jumping from his moving car onto MH’s moving car, and is thrown off to the road side… He goes to the wake of Min Sung, then he’s home for a while and Do Yeon comes. He fights and shoots Yang Hong Seob. He’s at the hospital, then he goes to get his mum’s card, etc. He does not rest at all, as if he’d never been hit by a truck!

  8. I like all the action scenes in all three episodes but yeah, 😂😂 I thought he should have been more bruised up. (I didn’t even know he had a fractured rib! That’s no joke. I’m not a doctor but a fractured rib could puncture the lung. And it could break off completely if he got punched or thrown to the ground.)

Anyway, I gave his “extraordinary feats” a pass because of the radiation he received as a baby in the womb. I noticed that during his police tryouts, he ran faster than the others. And when he confronted the school bullies, he was extraordinarily strong. He’s not The Hulk but going through the wormhole made him stronger than normal.

So Guys A and B are different? 😂 Told you. I’ve problems telling them apart. Idols and kpop singers confuse me.

  9. Clones did pop into my mind. I am having trouble trying to work out how there can be so many TYs. Good catch about the different scenes in Ep1&2. I wish they were more consistent in the scenes. It’s already confusing enough. I guess it’s possible to have so many TYs because the TY(mother of JG) wasn’t supposed to be there in 1992 in the first place. She and JG didn’t “exist” before then. Is that why JG can still move and everyone else freezes when the time card button is pressed? 🤔. Yes @GB I wondered about the fractured rib (from the truck of doom) and his sliced hand from grabbing the knife of DongSaeng in the lift. 🙄. So Prof TY is the original. The one who later was recruited for Alice and she returned to 1992 to retrieve the book. Prof TY would become 2050TY. So if Prof TY wasn’t the TY at the fountain, where was she then? Was she chasing some other drone?

I mentioned spacetime and the 4th dimension and Minkowski and hubby tried to explain it to me 😂. He lost me. I wanted an explanation about how time runs differently in Alice and outside Alice. I think I got it, how the speed of light is a constant and an absolute..😂 or maybe not 😂.

    Episode 4 Random Thoughts
This Episode took my breath away. In a good way, like there were times I broke out laughing long and hard, and in surprise at the twist(s). This is definitely showing itself to be a lot more convoluted and intriguing, but I hope not more and more confusing. It’s a pity that we get so little of the Book each episode, although the excerpts we do get are informative. From the Book, we are told that, what we are seeing is what was predicted, and we even get an idea of what to expect.

I was heartily entertained by this episode. The tables turn and now it’s Prof who’s rude and pursuing JG for the card. The best LOL moments were the cat fight over JG who succeeded in ignoring it all, with the reactions of the police officers who observed in dumbfounded envy.

The Kuiper or Kaiper Institute’s Dir Seok finally makes a proper appearance and we sense his hidden power, when we see that Jin Gyeom only had to say that he’d have to see to believe in time travel, for that wish to be granted. It’s going to be heart wrenching watching the next episode when he meets his mum.

It becomes more possible that Tae Yi was the daughter of Dr Jang, since we learn she was an orphan.

What does not sit well with me since ‘guests’ have been committing crimes in 2020, (and even among the 2050) is the lack of accountability, the lack of horror and no talk at all that the business of time travel should be halted. This begs the question: how much criminal activity has already been allowed to take place?

The reaction to the most unthinkable act that could or should ever take place, (are we inured by TK:EM?) the killing of one’s own self in the past, was so muted and almost non-existent. No hue and cry, no paradox of eradicating oneself, no punishment …. and then this episode suddenly introduces parallel universes. So it seems that the people of the future, although they give lip service to people of 2020 being the same people as themselves, do not care about the people of the past, because they belong to another universe? It does not matter what chaos they cause in the past because it will never affect their own future?

Clients of Alice are let loose to commit horrendous crimes in the past, but they remain honoured guests, who are merely given a slap on the wrist.

No Hoo Hah Over the Lost Book
What was puzzling to me was why Alice accepted the loss of the book so quietly. The drones had come around, but there had been no searches. Jin Gyeom had been watched, but he had been left alone.

The assassin who lost his foot in Ep 1 (we find out his name is Lee Se Hoon), and is about to be released. Alice still thinks he knows where the Book is. So does that mean Yoo Min Hyuk didn’t tell them that Tae Yi had taken the Book? That could explain why she had not be hunted down endlessly by Alice.

Min Hyuk not only thinks Tae Yi of his time is alive and well, he thinks his baby died. Obviously both Alice and its operatives do not trust each other. But since Min Hyuk knows that Tae Yi took the Book, why didn’t he try to get it back from her?

In the screenshot above of the 3 men on the street on the night of Tae Yi’s murder, we have yet to see the Stranger with white hair.

  11. Following on from @GB’s thoughts. Dir Seok revealed his agenda. His world view is that just because you can time travel, doesn’t mean you should. He believes Life and Time are domains which sit with deities and mankind should not tamper with it. So yes I can see why he would want to take Alice down because they are playing god. He briefly mentioned clones…in that whole philosophical argument…but I am not sure if that’s just in relation to his “I believe in only god giving life and therefore we shouldn’t be cloning” and not so much an indication that we will be seeing clones in the drama. I hope not. It’s mind boggling enough as it is…without the clones. So yes we will get to see both TYs doing life in tandem because JG inadvertently time jumped back to 2010…before his mom (2050TY) died and when College Life Prof TY co-existed. What I want to know is how does that time card know when to jump back to? It’s not like there are numbers you punch in? Something must activate it…so far both times it’s been truck of dooms… in the first instance, it was a pause…and time stopped…this time he jumped back in time.

I get the feeling MH was trying to protect 2050TY. He probably never told them that TY took it?

Thing is though. It seems quite obvious that it’s TY who wrote the book (the typewriter belonged to her)? She drew the exact same pic in her notebook during College. Her late father Dr Jang already had the completed book in his hand when she was a child. Did she go back even further in time? To prevent her mother’s death and wrote the book then? There are no pictures of her mom in her father’s study. Just of her and her dad.

And I am seeing production errors already (not sure if it’s deliberate). If it’s just sloppy writing/props it’s not a good look…especially in a time travel drama when dates mean everything…

    Graduation day (banner says 2011)

  12. Unless banner is of some future event and not actually a graduation banner. I can’t read Korean. So no idea.

  13. Growing Beautifully (GB)

Hi @nrllee Great that you caught all that.

I was under the impression that Korean high schoolers graduated at age 19, which would be 2011. So maybe the banner is right and the year on the screen is wrong.

I too was noting the reference to deities/god and wondering if Dir Seok was sincere or not. If he’s sincere, then he’ll be out to get rid of Alice and any other time travel ‘agencies’ that there may be.

If he’s not, then he’s just throwing smoke at us, so that we’ll fail to suspect him.

It’s getting so that we’re going to wonder which Tae Yi we’re watching. If there’s yet another TY who wrote the Book and passed it to her ‘father’, Dr Jang of 1992, to keep for a future TY of 2050….yes, my mind is getting boggled. Also the question arises, if Dr Jang is her real father or not, since 2050 TY did not recognise him.

  14. Dinner conversation
Me (looking at my son who’s an engineer) – explain the 4th dimension and Minkowski for me. Like in simple language.
Son – what do you want to know?
Me – does time slow near the speed of light?
Son – time’s relative mum. Didn’t you ever notice that your watch is off by a few minutes or so after a plane trip?
    Me – really?? No way??
    Son – you’ve never noticed??
Me – Err no. I just change my watch to local time when I see it at the airport. You mean that’s like a thing? Physics? Spacetime?
    Son – 😑

  15. I haven’t watched Ep 4.

Graduation banner is right. 🙂 If JG was a senior in high school in Fall of 2010, then he was graduating in the Spring of 2011. He’s be the Class of 2011, not 2010.

  16. I am done with ep3. So my take that the omega TY is a clone is still a possibility. So far there are 4 TYs i.e. 2051 TY (if ever she still lives in 2051), Omega TY, Prof TY and Fountain TY. I mentioned in the Book of Prophecy thread that it seems like the Fountain TY came to 2020 with a calmer HSH (2050 HSH) not the emotional 2051 HSH. And MH was not aware of this.

I also wrote about overlapped in the other thread where Fountain TY is actually Omega TY doing her work sending client (2050 HSH) to 2020, before her 1992 trip. So, did 2050 HSH make a second visit to 2020 as client 1011 i.e. 2051 HSH? So as stated before HES indeed got the side effects similar to the one 2051 HSH has been having. Genes. Possibly the child will die earlier since 2051 HSH killed herself in 2020. Some changes in history are bound to happen.

And I agree with the possibility of SOW and GHS working together with Omega TY. In ep 1 these two guys ran in opposite direction from Omega TY’s house. So, there is a possibility that Omega TY called these guy and gave the book for them to keep before the 2050 Bad Guy (the Client) with Sum tattoo arrived at her house to kill her. Omega TY knew why the drones are there, for surveillance on Alice’s agents, clients and their targets. She knew someone from the future has come for her.

This episode is like an introduction to the people behind Alice. I hope writer nim don’t make JG fell for Prof TY. That would be so weird.

I am beginning to question this writer’s move to include that moment whereby JG confessed about not feeling anything towards GHS when prior he was balling his eyes out when he saw Fountain TY/ Prof TY and he ran into the ER. There are emotions there. Aigoo, unlike Hyeon Su who has to hide his condition, JG has many people there who guide him. The doctor said he can get better with training. Presumably Omega TY did train him, he should have regained some of the emotions. He cares, he worries, he cries, he sympathise. Those are growth of emotions from him.

From ep. 1 and 2, there are a number of production errors/editing mistakes on current period either Aug 2020 or late sept 2020. Though the month error on passport of HES was fixed from Aug. to Sept. in ep. 3. Seems like you can’t make up your mind between aug and sept, writer-PD nim lol….

  17. I noticed errors in later eps too @miracle23. It’s sloppy? Especially for a time travel drama? 🙄. You’d want to at least get those bits right?

  18. @nrllee, I know right? I mean, time especially will be scrutinised in this drama since it’s dealing with that theme. Following ep. 4, there is that possibility that SOW is from 2050 and went to 2010 to get the book. I need to rewatch that one again. One thing is JG doesn’t have to press the button on the card for it to send him into another timeline. A good solid impact can do it.

    We have finally established that:
    1. 1992 girl = 2020 Prof TY = 2050/2051 TY.
    2. The killer of Prof. Jang is LSH. LSH served jail time for his crime in real world from 1992 and to be released in 2020 (28 years based on real world)
    3. Alice HQ is in a future alternate/parallel universe where time moves slower.
    4. Alice has set up a HQ in real world.

    More questions:
    1. A question was raised in our group watch, does 2020 Prof TY ever get married between 2020 to 2050? If yes, does she had a daughter or a son? Who will it be? Will he/she be working for Alice too?
    2. The possibility that 2050 LSH traveled to 2010 to kill Omega TY. He was the guy with grey hair.
    3. Possibility that SOW is in team Anti-Alice (i.e. team resistance) as well as Fountain TY. “Time travel is possible and even cloning but human should not do it because Life and Time are God’s domain.”
    4. HSH met Fountain TY – She got the mercenary contact number – Does Fountain TY work for the resistance team. Is she the one giving the number to HSH? Is she another clone of TY because she seems as distant as Omega TY during her assignment? Does the mercenary work for the resistance?
    5. KCA to HSH: 10 years in real world (2020) = 1 day in 2050 (real future world). Is HSH a client from time period 2050 (real world)?
    6. KCA to YMH: 1 year at Alice HQ = 29 years in real world (did they make it 29 years because of korean age (i.e. 28 + 1 = 29) when it should actually be 28 years?
    7. Each time history/ past is tweaked/ changed it will create a butterfly effect i.e. a person who changes his past in order to avoid a certain future event through time travel may have caused another figure of him living in the same timeline(?) – when Omega TY decided to stay in 1992 and deliver her baby, she inadvertently became the second TY to the first and actual TY i.e. Prof TY/ the little girl from 1992. So does this mean Prof. TY is Alpha TY?

    Example from SOW:

Guy A1 had an accident – Guy A1 (e.g. 2010) traveled to his past (e.g. 2000) and warned himself, Guy A2 on that future accident, then returned to 2010. Guy A2 lived his life throughout the years and in 2010 escaped that accident. Hence, in effect both of them will co-exist in same timeline i.e. 2010, one who had the accident and one who escaped it.

So what is the resistance’s mission? To kill off the doubles/ triples and keep only one of them in any one timeline? Or to allow the travelers for the future to stay in the past and recreate their future?

  19. @miracle23 I think the resistance is to totally stop time travel. So they want to thwart Alice altogether.

And I get the feeling when SOW was talking about “cloning” it was the result of creating separate universes/timelines because you’ve altered something in your past. Like that example of the man in wheelchair going back in time to warn his younger self so he avoids the accident and therefore lives a totally different life. He’s essentially “cloned” himself. Who knows who Fountain TY is. Which iteration/clone is she?
