Thread is now open for spoilers and comments.
I heard it’s going to be break-up time for the couple. (lol. Only in dramaland…) so let’s enjoy the sweet moments associated with:
1. the shoe. The gifs for the shoe moment were posted here: True Beauty: Ep 7 @GB’s List of Lousy Adults.
2. the hairclip. The gifs from the hairclip moment are here:

Yes, I know I owe y’all three posts on this kdrama. I’ll try to catch up.
Let’s enjoy the show.
Thanks for a new thread @pkml3. I watched Ep 9 raw and the break up hasn’t happened yet. The shenanigans with JK’s dad needs to be understood with the subs, but this ep gives us a pretty good idea why his wife deprecates him like she does … not that it’s right. But on the other hand, if she’d been a different kind of wife, he’d also have behaved differently.
I admire Suho’s patience in trying to go on dates with JK. She wants to keep their relationship a secret, which makes things more difficult than they have to be. Now with Go Woon working in Prince Comics, even that little haunt is out of bounds for dating.
Soo Jin knows who Suho likes now, but so far, she’s not become mean. Keeping my fingers crossed that she retains her reasonableness.
Oh wow.. I don’t even know what to say on JuKyung’s dad:
– He lost money to another scam
– He intruded on high school student
– He overstay his welcome, found alcohol in the cabinet and got drunk in said high school’s student house
And also SooJin’s dad 😡
We have reference to Vagabond (taekwondo sparring) and the movie Parasite (JK’s dad in SH’s house)
Ep9 is titled “Secret Boyfriend”. I am off to watch now.
Okay before I forget, that whole kiss and then the interchange? I got everything from MGY. I sensed her shock, apprehension, disbelief, confusion and nervousness. When she said her heart was pounding and she was nervous I could tell that she was exactly that. CEW replied he was nervous too and then gave her the necklace…really? I got nothing at all from his end. Was he nervous? He didn’t look it? His face registered nothing? 🙄. And then when she carried on about how she thought about him day and night and everything else that went with it, I couldn’t help but smile. 😂. I am completely in her corner.
The wrist grab doesn’t look as bad when a woman does it to a man? 🤔. When HK tries to stop Teacher from leaving the cafe after she misunderstood what was playing out at the cafe with the tie.
I agree with @Ella about JK’s dad. 🙄, helping himself to the alcohol (without asking first?) and then trying to hide the fact (which is even worse)? I am not sure what the writer is trying to say about the “adults” in this drama. Yes to the nod to Parasite when the dad hid under the coffee table.
@Ella @nrllee Thanks for the title of the Episode!
I believe Ep 9 had a few times where CEW actually showed more emotion than before. One of those times was when JK was trying to throw him at Jujitsu or whatever martial arts it was. I think he was actually laughing over the fact that she could barely move him.
On the one hand, I like that we got the 3 dads this episode. Maybe show is giving us a compare and contrast moment. I felt the pathos of Suho who grew up alone as a child and how he was surprised to experience ‘family time’ now, as a high schooler, not with his own dad, but with JK’s. JK’s father is hopelessly naïve and self indulgent, but he knows how to show warmth and care.
However …
I shake my head at JK’s dad who requires so much care (what his daughter Hee Kyung says of Teacher Han). Not only does he need a place to stay, but he needs to be fed and he burns his mouth and falls down and hurts himself like a child.
I also tut tut at him who has the usual kdrama ‘father double standards’, ie. he approves of Suho being a real man on a date with a girl is fine, as long as it’s not with his daughter.
And then there’s Hee Kyung, the oft drunk and not always reasonable bulldozer of a girl. Hee Kyung’s over-reaction at seeing Teacher Han with the lady teacher was unfortunate. Her claiming him as her lover in public was a huge contrast to how JK was hiding her relationship with Suho. However, now Teacher Han will never be able to live it down that he has a lover, and the school kids will probably find out as well. Poor chap! Another version of why some people want to keep their personal life very private.
The one part that I really liked in the episode was what Suho said to JK. He said that it didn’t matter whether his and JK’s relationship was broadcast to everyone or not, because the fact that she was his girlfriend would be the same. Of course we’ll have some breakup woes coming along to throw over this belief, the way SH could easily throw JK over. I also liked that he let JK win although she got him by tickling and not by a valid throw. That’s the way he’s been accommodating her all along.
On the whole, SH makes a pretty nice boyfriend.
Episode 10 starts out light with funny but complications start setting in with a dramatic cliff hanger. And unfortunately, Soo Jin does disappoint.
I was asking before, why Suho’s father was so desirous of re-connecting with his son. And we wondered about why he didn’t want Se Yeon’s memorial project to take place. I guess we get the answers this episode.
I enjoyed the mandoo competition, the SH and SJ fight as they slid down the stairs and how they had to cut each other’s toe nails LOL. And I’m wondering when JK’s brother is going to grow up and stop being such an entitled ass.
@GB I agree about CEW. And yes to the point about him (finally) relaxing and looking natural when during the martial arts scene. And yes, in spite of his patchy acting, I would say he gets my thumbs up in the bf department where it counts – reassuring JK that he likes her for who she is when she was in disbelief that he would pick her over SooJin. And her nickname for him on her phone 😂. I actually like it that SH had her name on his (and not “gf”) initially. It meant that he saw the real IJK and he liked her for who she was. He didn’t need her to be his “gf” or “honey” for it to mean anything more. But it mattered to her, so he changed it.
Ep10 is titled “Between Love and Friendship”. Won’t be able to watch till later.
@nrllee Thanks for the Ep 10 title. “Between Love and Friendship” sounds like it encapsulates the dilemma and confusion of young, naive JK, ie her divided loyalties. She does not know how to prioritise what’s important and what she’s prepared to lose or retain. In that area, I blame Soo Jin. She used her smarts to ill purpose in manipulating JK’s simple and sincere way of choosing.
JK and her dad in collusion … *sigh*. I understand that they want to avoid the mum’s ire but what a sorry role model that dad is.
I need to watch with subs. Catch ya later!
Gosh what a heavy Episode 10! And the Ep11 trailer shows it will continue to give us heartbreak.
Awww Seojun… such a sweet heart. He cares for both JK and Suho. I like how he understands and emphatize with the lovebirds. His advices, how he cares for his mom and sister are signs that he would be a great boyfriend! Obviously its a Suho-JK endgame so I hope my dear Seojun will get a happy ending.
The dumpling showdown! LOL!
JK’s brother is funny as well. I find his narcissism cute and I’m waiting for that aha moment when Seojun’s sister will finally fall for him.
Soo Jin please is turning out to be a manipulative jealous friend. I’m not sure how long she will do this and if JK really meant anything to her as a friend.
I’m hating JK’s parents more and more. I hope there will be character development or they’ll show more love for JK in the remaining episodes.
The most hated character of Ep10 — Suho’s dad!!! How can he do that to his own son and friends. Grrrrr!
Question: What’s up with the silver bracelet that Seojun dropped? Was the for JK or I probably missed in the previous episodes the relevance of that bracelet.
@Diane
About:
– I noticed that Se Yeon, Su Ho and Seo Jun each wore a similar bracelet, they were 3 close friends who shared the same passion for making music as composers/singers. I guess the bracelet is a sign of solidarity and unity, and now it’s kept/worn in memory of Se Yeon.
@GB: Thanks! I need to watch more closely. I didn’t notice the other 2 boys have the same bracelet.
Hmmm I see that my odd guess that Suho’s dad is stealing Se Yeon’s song(s) is true after all. That would mean he is also stealing from his own son. What a louse!! So what was getting close to Suho supposed to do… enable him to get more new melodies without having to pay for it?
These parents in True Beauty are competing for “The Worst Adult masquerading as Parents” award 🤦🏻♀️
@Ella True! 🤦🏻♀️ Swoon should add this in their poll for 2021. LOL!
@GB You need to update your Lousy Adults list with what happened in the latest episodes.
I am speechless with episode 10. Fuming, speechless, angry I can’t believe this little scum of a father
Diane,
Suho had a bracelet like that too. He put his bracelet away. In a box on his desk. I can’t remember what episode it is now. Must have been after SJ told him that he was a killer and should be punished forever.
I’ve really enjoyed this show so far, especially the sweet moments. And Moon Ga-young’s transformation from nerd to beauty is one of the highlights for me. Unlike an American show where the nerdy girl is actually a beautiful actress barely concealed behind a ponytail and glasses, she really looks like a regular teenager with bad skin. Kudos to the actress for her willingness to really look the part and for her makeup team for coming up with such realistic makeup.
Prior to Episode 9, the weakest aspect of the show, for me, was Cha Eun-Woo’s wooden acting (although, as I said in a previous post, I sometimes wonder if the director wants him to pose within a scene–staring into space, etc.–as though it’s the frame of a comic, just for the visual effect). I did think that CEW’s acting improved over the last two episodes, as he was showing a little more responsiveness and emotion.
What I don’t buy is Soo-jin’s sudden transformation from girl-hero to manipulator in Episode 10. I haven’t seen that many factors that would have caused her to be like this. Is her sudden interest in (or coveting of) Su Ho supposed to be enough to push her into selfishly betraying her friend? Or are we to assume that the girl who has been bullied by her father all these years would ultimately turn into a bully? I really need more backstory here. Otherwise it seems that she is acting this way only to create a conflict for our OTP, as needed by Episode 10 in a 16-episode story arc.
I agree @BethB about SooJin. Why does she have the short end of the stick as second lead? SeoJun’s response is a stark contrast? We know he likes JK but at least he’s playing fair in the courtship battle?
And yes to CEW’s acting. He seems to have settled in and isn’t as stiff. Especially in Ep10.
