River Where the Moon Rises: Viu’s Character Chart

Thanks, Ella, for sharing this visual aid from Viu. It’s a big help for people (like me!) who want to know the alliances pronto.

So based on the colors of this chart,

1. the Gyeru tribe has an in-fighting between the King and one of its royalties, Go Won Pyo. What caused Go Won Pyo’s hatred for the Queen that he was willing to kill her, break off the marital alliance with her Jeolno tribe, AND fight against the Sunno’s tribe leader? If he simply wanted her out, in order to install the consort as the new Queen, wouldn’t it have been easier to just poison her?
2. the King’s daughter was raised by an enemy tribe, the Cheongubang. Was it their leader who wanted the daughter to kill her own father/King in Episode 1?
3. didn’t the Queen’s tribe, Jeolno, do anything to retaliate against the murder of one of its own? Interesting.

Re, the title “River Where the Moon Rises,” this is my interpretation:

In kdramas, the moon represents the queen. The sun, on the other hand, symbolizes the king. To me, the river here alludes to the bloodbath. The river shall flow with blood… and so on. The new Queen or ruler will emerge after much blood is shed. However, she is the rightful heir of the throne, and from her bloodline, the new kingdom will rise.  Hence, river where the moon rises. 🙂

Thanks for the character chart again, Ella!

  1. I think the cheonjubang is an assassin group, the leader wants to eliminate the king using the princess’s hands but i’m unclear on what’s his agenda yet.

I need this chart when I watch the show 😅

  2. Thanks @PM3, @Ella! This is super helpful.

Cheonjubang seems to be linked to the Sono Clan. Didn’t GoGeon follow a person he suspected (who threw the sword to GJ during her assassination attempt ) to Moyong’s place?

  3. This is my take. I haven’t rewatched scenes so I could be wrong.

I think GWP realized the Queen was seeking the help of Gen OnHyeop to form an alliance against the other tribes (the King divulged this unintentionally). He didn’t think she was someone to contend with but she forced his hand? So he framed the Sunno tribe for treason of Murdering the Queen. The result of which is the death of OnDal’s father. And the Sunno tribe is now the Ghost Village. Resorting to hiding from the authorities and accepting misfits/exiles from elsewhere who have nowhere to go.

The CheonJuBang leader (Assassin chief) was the guy (monk) who carted PyeongGang off after she witnessed the carnage at the monastery her father the King was responsible for in his jealous rage. I think he was one of the monks who survived. And formed some sort of renegade group of assassins. So his agenda was personal (revenge). He wanted the King to die by the sword of his own daughter.

MY (herbalist) is part of one of the smaller tribes (Sono). Her father Hae JiWol is the tribe leader. I get the feeling their tribe is smaller and not as powerful (influence and military). So she’s utilizing her wit and cunning to gain power. She uses information as her bargaining chip. And works it to her tribe’s favour. She’s cunning and wants the GyeRu tribe to fight it out with the Palace and then take the spoils afterward. Much like how her henchman (the guy GG followed to her home) tossed the sword to GJ to kill the King. She won’t have her henchman do the dirty deed, she will provide the tools for someone else to do it for her. That’s how she’s coming across.

  4. Thank you Ella and Packmule3 for this chart. I started a lil bit confused with many tribes just like when I first watched GOT. This chart reallly helps me!

If it’s really like GOT, I believe that all tribe will have to fight against the same enemy one day.. now they are busy trying to get the throne but only until they face the same enemy.

Now that GaJin thought about what monk’s said: to come back as a princess. Do u think she will have go back to the palace again?
