The post title is self-explanatory. If you want to watch the Japanese adaptation of “Love O2O,” it’s called “Cinderella is Online.”

Caveat: This dorama isn’t as good as the original. Obviously.

We all know that nothing will beat Yang Yang’s original version. However…

It’s always good to watch different versions. It lets us see what plot points the new director considered important from the original drama that he duplicated them in his adaptation. It also allows us to refresh our memories and to consider the story from another perspective.

I personally like to watch a different director remake the story with his own cultural aesthetics and values.

For instance, I remember in the original version, the avatar of the heroine was conservatively dressed. In fact, the heroine Weiwei explained that her reason for choosing her avatar was because the female body wasn’t flaunting her body. She didn’t like that computer games mostly had scantily-dressed female avatars.

That’s why I noticed right away that the avatar of the heroine in the Japanese version had an exposed belly. The Japanese director probably did away with the clothing requirement because it wasn’t integral to the plot.

But to me, Weiwei’s remark about female attire told me something about her character. She didn’t want to be recognized for her beauty or outward appearance, but for her skills.

Sure, this could be interpreted as the Chinese writer’s way of “virtue-signaling,” but I do agree that:

a. inner beauty >> outer beauty, and
b. many of the female avatars in these multi-players online games are NOT in combat-ready attire.

If I were to choose an avatar, I’d probably pick something like this wrinkled puppy.
