Throwback Thursday: HP Episode 2 Review

Here’s one more post on Episode 2. It’s the last one. There was so much information to unpack in Episode 2 that I had to do it piecemeal.

Please remember that when I wrote these analyses of the episodes, I was doing them “on the spot,” without foreknowledge of  the next episode.

Also, if you’re a reader from Russia, I know you want to join the discussion. However, this blog blocks ALL emails with a yandex(dot)ru or mail(dot)ru address because of malware, spyware, and spam.

There are two more things which caught my attention, and then I think I’ll put this Episode 2 to bed. Tomorrow, there’ll be Episode 3.

5. The sausages

The subtle joke and commentary on this theory (i.e., similar to socialist economic model) that you can allocate limited resources (i.e., the sausages) according to ability with preferential treatment given to the weakest people in the link (i.e., the medical students).

The cafeteria lady had given IJ an order that everybody should be given two sausages. In his (misguided) sense of kindness, he decided to distribute the sausages according to ability. However, instead of recognizing seniority, he decided to give preferential treatment to the newest members of the chain, the medical students.

Heo: Sir a lot of sausages, please.
IJ: Are you a resident?
Heo: Pardon? Yes.
IJ: Okay. Then, you can have three sausages. She told me not to give more than two, but I gave you three since you’re a resident. Next. (seeing one of the twins) Are you an intern?
Hongdo: No, I’m a med student.
IJ: My gosh! I’ll give you five sausages. Here, there you go. (seeing the other twin) You two?
Yunbok: Yes.
IJ: Okay. Here. There you go.
SH: What are you doing here? You’re a professor.
IJ: You get one sausage. That way, I can even out the sausages. I gave a lot of sausages to the people in front of you. The higher your position is, the fewer sausages you get. Don’t stand there. Keep moving. The cafeteria lady and I are best friends. Her son suddenly ended up at the police station. I’m wearing gloves and a mask.
SH: Give me one more. Just one more.
IJ: Get lost. Next.
SH: Okay.
Director: Seriously?
IJ: Darn it. Here (adds a broccoli). This way, I can balance supply and demand. I gave a lot of sausages to the people in front of you. You should make a small sacrifice, sir. Next. (sees the General Surgery Resident, Dr. Jang) Hi. You know how much I care, right? (and dumped a lot of sausage on her)
Jang: Thank you.

Although he started with good intentions, he realized that in the end, his method was flawed. He couldn’t balance demand-and-supply because, from the start, he ignored the demand and the supply. He mismanaged the already limited supply of sausage. So to compensate for the shortage which he created, he withheld the rightful share of those senior rank members with an emotional appeal to “sacrifice.” lol.

But what really took the cake (or the sausage) was the corruption at the end. lol. Although he was already low on sausage, when he saw his favorite “pet project” Dr Jang, he dumped a whole scoop of sausage and more. Ha! Dr Jang then dumped the whole lot because she was unable to eat it since she was needed at the ER.

Do you see the social commentary now?

On a personal note, IJ’s “pet project” reminded me of politicians who recently attempted to add their “pet projects” on an emergency bill intended to provide relief from the coronavirus economic crisis. Some of the politicians aren’t strangers to my family. But we’re so repelled by their partisanship and politicization of this crisis that we’ve decided not to donate to their campaigns this year. Enough. United we stand, divided we fall.

/End politics

6. The Wake for the Director Ju’s Wife

I already said that I was little bit surprised with Songhwa’s question. If I were her, my first questions would have been whether JW knew the wife personally, and if she had been a good person or not. It wouldn’t enter my head to pry about the state of their marriage. It was none of my business.

Songhwa: Mr. Ju…I mean, Director Ju. He must be devastated. They had a happy marriage, right?
JW: Yes, a very happy one. I head he didn’t leave his wife alone even for a minute for two to three weeks before her death.

And then Director Ju arrived with JW’s mom.

From Episode 1, we knew that she’d known him since childhood, she attended his wedding, and he wasn’t shy to ask her to cook him a meal, although he was normally reticent about asking favors. Likewise, the mom wasn’t shy to ask him to become chairman of the board although she knew it was a lot of work for him during that time of his wife’s illness. She knew she was imposing on the generosity of Director Ju. That’s why she said, “I told JW to call Chairman Hwang and to get him on (Director Ju’s) side. Gosh, I raised JW wrong. All of my efforts to raise my children (i.e., a successor the chairmanship) went to nothing.” She meant that none of her children wanted to take up chairmanship.

Now, if JW’s mom and Director Ju end up together, because of love, then I wouldn’t mind.

Director Ju seemed to be a good man.

Ju: All of you must be busy. You should get back to work.
JWan: No, it’s okay. Did you get some sleep, sir?
Mom: He didn’t. He’s been greeting the guests all day. I dragged him here. Jong-su, you need to eat something.

I guess he and his wife had no children to be at his side at the time of his wife’s death, so JW’s mom took him under her wings.

Ju: I’m fine. I can’t really eat anything right now. (talking to the gang) Let me know if there’s anything you need. Aren’t you drinking?
JW: No, we’re good. Don’t worry about us, sir.
Mom: You saw Jeongwon many times when he was little. Just talk casually.
JW: Exactly. Please talk casually to me, sir.
Ju: Gosh, how could I? Our hospital can stay afloat thanks to these doctors here.
Songhwa: Maybe in the hospital but you’re his mom’s friend here, so please talk casually. It’ll make us more comfortable.

I like that she stepped in and echoed JW’s thoughts. I thought of all the people there, she was the one who could convince Director Ju. She said it very graciously.

Ju: Shall I?
JW: Yes, please.
Ju: So the five of you are best friends?
JW: Yes. We went to school together. We were all in different classes but somehow ended up becoming friends.
Ju: My gosh, how adorable.
Mom: Adorable, my foot. They’re all still single because they want their parents to worry about them.

SH: I’m divorced.
IJ: And I’m married.

A bit of a detour here to talk about IJ’s wife.

FOR NOW, until his mystery wife arrives, I’m going to consider him single. Here are three reasons.

one, their bathroom didn’t have signs of her existence. Of course. It’s possible that IJ had his own master bathroom. But if he was sharing U-wu’s bathroom, this bathroom was oddly devoid of women’s toiletries.

two, the kitchen island was just right for two: the highchair for the baby bear and a chair for papa bear. Mama bear’s chair wasn’t there.

three, he behaved like a single man. Dancing “Pick me, pick me, pick me up” for Dr. Jang was inappropriate.

This, too.

These could be misconstrued as sexual harassment.

I wouldn’t put it pass this writer to make a social commentary on single parenting, especially when the parent is the father. I wrote before that, in a paternalistic society, single fathers get a double whammy. There’s not a lot of support for them. Of course, IJ’s wife could simply be a diplomat, businesswoman, lumberjack or any sort of woman who was away on a job.

Now, back on topic.

Mom: I like you two.
Ju: You’re all good-looking. How did nothing happen between you guys?
IJ: Pardon?
Mom: (gently scolding Dir Ju) Why would you do that? Why disturb the calm waters?
Ju: Did I do that?
Jwan: Oh, romance? Had there been any?

Did you see the relay here? The “look” started with JWan moved to JW to Songhwa to IJ and ended up with SH.

JW and Songhwa looked at each.

She then looked at IJ.

They exchanged glances and then he looked at SH.

My take here is that JWan suspected JW of hiding a secret romance. That’s why he pointedly asked JW if there had been any romance, instead of looking at the LONE girl in the group and asking HER if there had been any romance.

lol. Right? It’s kinda logic.

There were four guys and one girl. If Jwan really wanted to know the scoop on romance, he should have asked the only girl in the group because SHE would be the one to know who did or didn’t romance her.

Why look at JW??

Image result for why gif

It was a good thing SH squealed and ended that awkward moment.

SH: I told Songhwa I had feelings for her but got rejected.

Mom: Seriously? When?
Jwan: When?
Songhwa: I don’t even remember yesterday.
SH: On her birthday in our freshman year. I told her I had feelings for her only to be rejected.
IJ: How did she reject you?
SH: She said she liked someone else.
JWan: (eyeing her) Gosh. That’s such a cookie-cutter answer. (Meaning, it’s such a cliché.)
IJ: (laughing) We hear that all the time. “I like someone else.”
Songhwa: (seriously looking at him) No. I really did.

Her look meant stop laughing at me.

Mom: It was like that back in my days, too. It’s hard to say to the person’s face that you just don’t like him.
Jwan: That’s right.
JW: Totally. That’s true.

JW looked uncomfortable with this sort of talk. lol.

In closing, I found this Episode 2 interesting exhausting to analyze. I’m apologize for going into details and boring you. I thought it was necessary since we’re laying the groundwork.

Also, I didn’t want you to miss out on the little details like these, which I mentioned in my First Impression. Songhwa looked up Chairman Ahn’s bio. I told you that she might have known JW’s identity a long time ago, and she worried for him being the third son.

And this. She learned that Chairman Ahn died and she looked concerned.

Little things like that are easy to miss when you’re simply recapping or gushing over the “feels” of the drama.

If I’m too obsessive for you, just skip this blog. 🙂

**************

My major complaints are the editing (I already talked about this) and the sound editing, in particular. There were times when we heard somebody talking but the face wasn’t shown. I couldn’t tell who said it. Could you tell?

Like this one.

Or this one.

Hopefully, the editors will do better in the future.

Thanks @pkml3, after reading this, I had to go back to rewatch Episode 2 LOL.

  2. 🙂 You don’t have to, @GB. Just save it for the rewatch.

We were on the ball from Day 1 with this show. When I wrote that we shouldn’t count IkJung out of the husband-guessing game, he was still married then. lol. I didn’t know that the writer had divorce in mind for him.

  3. Each one of the four had their separation explored in S1. Will PG have his in S2??🤔🤔🤔

  4. FYI. I just posted something on HP and the numbers of clicks from SKorea went up. lol.

He/she/they are going to be bummed out when I password-protect my HP posts during Season 2. But it can’t be helped. As long as the crazy Winter Gardeners are harassing FGers on soompi, Twitter, Facebook, and the other drama sites, the FGers will be protected here.

  5. True. Four of them weathered a broken relationship in S1 except JW.

But remember that song request of Songhwa in this Episode 2?

    “…If you know someone nice
    Set me up with them
    Even love requires practice
    I want someone caring
    Who notices even small details
Someone with a lot of relationship experience

    I have wounds and scars
So I don’t feel comfortable dating someone
    With no past whatsoever

    I want to be consoled
By someone with pretty eyes who has cried
Because of a breakup at least once…”

Of all the four guys, only JW didn’t fit the requirement because he hadn’t cried because of a breakup even once. 🙂

  6. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@pkml3 You know, it’s the awareness that our SK viewers are also so taken with this show that gets me excited, rather than the show itself and all the write-ups about it. Wish we could get to read their points of view.

I feel that for this show’s rewatch, I’ll be a silent observer and just enjoy the avalanche of posts.

I hope S2 will hold lots of backstories and answer the questions that we’ve raised.

The production’s publicity team doesn’t need to do a thing. We viewers are getting ourselves so hyped up, we’d go in blind to watch, even if they don’t give us previews and posters. LOL.

  7. Interesting traffic coming from there, pm3. 🤭 Girls, if you are a Flower Gardener, introduce yourself. Join us! 😁

We still have about a week before we kick off with finalising our rewatch participants. 😊 Any of our new FGrs who have not emailed us before, please send us an email with your BoD un, thank you.

P/S: In addition to their shared values, interests, etc. our FG have the best visuals together, #Fact. How can we not love these two maknae?!🥰🥰🥰

  8. Aha! Pm3, but he had a first love that he let go. That was his heartbreak, I presumed🤭🤭🤭🤭

Will they revisit our FG’s first loves who were written into their character’s descriptions? 🤔

  9. Ahh… I forgot about the song, Love for A Thousand Years in Ep. 1 that talked about someone who kept the love of his life deep in his heart:-

    “I prayed all night long
Because I can’t let you go
If I can’t love you any longer
I have no reason to stay here
And I wish I would be taken

Even if my last wish is ignored
You will forever burn in my heart
Like a flame that will never burn out

You shed tears and suffered for me
How hard of a time you went through
    I won’t forget you
Even after a thousand years go by
    Because I love you”

    By Park Wan Kyu

This screams PG to me. But only S2 will tell us what is actually in his mind when he let go of his first love for his dream.🤧

  10. Now that you highlighted How concerned SHwa looked when she read the news about the death of Chairman and probability of the 3rd son taking over Yulje Hospital.. remind me of how different SHwa expression when she heard that something happened with IKJun (the divorce). She looks calm there if i’m not mistaken.

  11. Methinks WGrs from Korea are lurking and reading. 😂. Because honestly there is nothing else anyone else is posting that’s even remotely like this anywhere else? So they would rather read something and get all riled up about it than to read nothing. 😂.

There’s definitely a metaphor there in the sequence of looks. Otherwise Shin wouldn’t have asked them to do it in that particular sequence. In hindsight (we find out later that IJ knew about SH’s confession), why did IJ play dumb? Did he look at SH to press him to reveal it? It is very like IJ to do that. Mischief maker that he is. Because SHwa asked him point blank why he never let on that he knew when they were waiting for her biopsy results.

Actually in this week’s BTS I noticed something. It was an extended cut of the scene in the courtyard between the 5 of them. When they were talking about the new CS Prof who was out to marry someone for her money. Shin decided to cut out part of the scene. Watch right at the end. He removed the part where IJ said SHwa was cute for falling for his trick. But what interested me was the response of both JWs. Neither were impressed that IJ took advantage of her naïveté and made fun of her in front of them. I don’t buy the caption (IJ showing his interest). Making fun of her and having her believe a lie was not going unnoticed because she may just make a fool of herself in future when someone asks her to explain what a villain is? No wonder both JWs pulled him up for it after.

  12. I am a Flower Gardener in Taipei and would love to join the group, read the protected posts. 🙂 Been following your posts since the CLOY days (my first Kdrama).

  13. Welcome @Hatlady. @Packmule3 is slowly reposting password protected posts for public viewing in the coming weeks. This is one of them. There are others if you scroll back. So feel free to keep coming back weekly to read up and post comments.

  14. My tots are all the 4 guys do have soft spot for SW, but who was SW first love 20 years ago when she was burned with love? SH was rejected when he confessed during her birthday, so left with IJ, Jwan or PG?
Was IJ her first love? Probably, tat’s why she looked at IJ after exchanged glances with PG. If yes, then it looks more
like a buried love she now find difficulty to reconnect when IJ confessed 20 years later. Cos from the last 3 episodes her current love interest seemed inclined more towards PG lol.
Was it Jwan? If so, why when director Ju posed the romance question, Jwan looked at PG and not directly at SW.
Was it PG? Maybe, cos he had his budding love in his 20s, but didn’t pursue further cos of his dream of becoming a priest.

Agree with nirlee tat there’s a metaphor in the sequence of looks there. Hopefully, season 2 will answer who was SW and PG first love.

  15. @sni75 I think the “looks” represent suspicions/known crushes? If you go by the final look by IJ to SHyeong. So JWan thought JWon had a thing for SHwa. JWon thought SHwa had a thing for IJ. SHwa suspected IJ had a thing for her (and she was right). And IJ knew SHyeong had a thing for SHwa. Both JWon and SHwa had character descriptions mentioning a love in their 20s. If you go by the assumption that ChiHong was there (I call him the Other Ahn) to reveal JWon’s feelings in his 20s, then JWon’s first love was SHwa. Gifter of the shoes. The other suitor to IJ from way back. I am unsure about SHwa’s first love. If it was IJ or not. Even if it was, IJ missed his chance. He’s similar to JungHwan in R88 in that respect. His timing was never right. Probably why Shin had IJ carry that baseball and tossing it now and then. 😂 SHwa however has definitely changed in how she looks at JWon. Ep10 was that turning point when in her eyes he turned from good friend to desirable lover. The way she kept food aside for him (when all she cared about in Ep2 was her own belly). The way she looked at him. The way she called him “JWon-ah”. There’s no other reason for the sudden change in her attitude towards him.

  16. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@nrllee and @Miracle23, another little question. How does JWon translate to become PG?

  17. Psychic Guy – PG for us until he finds his correct way to Shwa🤭🤭🤭🤭 The penalty he earned for doing what he did. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

PG also for pabo guy who can sense Shwa is in distress by her voice but none when she gave him that puppy eyes or that proposal.🤦🏻‍♀️ – assuming that last scene was not a dream.

  18. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks @Miracle23. I wouldn’t have been able to guess that name connection in a million years! LOL I was thinking that since his name has something to do with garden that the ‘G’ stood for that. LOL.

  19. Given that this writer is really big on first love trope, if Ikjun was Shwa’s first love/crush:

    1. She would be the first to see him and worry about him the moment Jwan told her that Ikjun seemed troubled. But she brushed it off, not gonna have to worry or meddle in his problem.

    2. She would pay attention to Ikjun auditioning Shyeong or even keep her eyes on him, cos he was her crush. He would be her center of attention. But no, she spent the time enjoying her conversation with PG x Jwan on the latter’s new phone.

    3. She would have looked longingly at Ikjun when Chmn. Jungsoo asked that question. Instead she looked at PG from the very beginning to observe his reaction and from my watch, I saw Jwan glimpsed at her. Hence, he asked PG the question.

    4. She would want to spend her birthday with Ikjun that spring of 1999. So, she would have texted him to meet or even fish out a meeting. She would have sounded excited on the prospect of meeting him that night but she just asked casually why he wanna meet. This girl is a go getter. She makes efforts to get what she wants. At their orientation night, she entered the shed last, claimed their meeting was coincidence but it was not. She saw Ikjun x Jwan leaving, and she followed them. But she only entered after PG x Shyeong did.

    5. She would be the first to look for Ikjun whenever she got free time, cos just like maggot said, maggot needs PG to be in front of her (including while at work)🤷‍♀️. That’s how crush works, I guess.

    6. She would have accepted his confessions. Instead, her reactions from all of Ikjun’s advances and confessions mimicked reactions from all the main FL of the Reply series & Prison Playbook when they were being confessed by the second MLs i.e. awkward.

Dubidugree has compiled it for us and recently I found a matching scene in Reply 1997, so the puzzle is complete on this formula i.e Second ML will travel far to confess, but not to be given an answer. This has been a consistently used hint to represent ‘not endgame’. On the contrary, does it mean Ikjun x Shwa endgame in HP? We’ll see🤭

    https://ourpsychicfg.tumblr.com/post/643604268620890112/said-female-lead-to-the-second-lead-upss

  20. Thanks for the analysis. I always wonder how platonic relationships between boys and girls can be. My worldview currently is that it is hard to maintain 100% platonic after a certain point of closeness. People are in friend zone because the prospect is ruled in or ruled out at the time. Rule out because of availability, career choice, put off moments. Rule in because a certain act of that touches that heart, or finally available.

I cannot join the rewatch as much as I would love to! It would be 1am in my time zone (New Zealand). Can I still request the password so I can read the HP 2 posts for analysis? I watched Reply 1988 so I wasn’t 100% who the husband could be in HP knowing it could be hard to spot. Given there are at least another 12 episodes in season 2 I am very doubtful we will see SH’s clear choice early. Like @GB I hope to watch more back stories too so I wonder if the S2 ep 1 may take us back in the time line. I want to see when are the moments when they look at each other differently. Or they have displayed but I missed it because I wasn’t careful enough when watching HP 1.

  21. Thanks nirlee & miracle23 for the ‘looks’ enlightenment.

Like the way PG looked jealous n sounded both SW & Jwan off to stay as friends for long, dun get married but remain as food comrades. 🤣

  22. @Viva I do believe that there may be a different system operating when S2 begins. This is still a work in progress so don’t quote me. But I do believe @packmule3 is likely to post a public post and a password protected one (both similar in content). So for those feeling “hunted” on social media because of what happened in S1, they can comment with no fear of reprisals in the password protected posts. Others who’ve joined later in the piece and have no qualms about their comments sighted by the public will still get to read Packmule’s insights and comment publicly in the open posts.

I agree about the timing of the reveal. It won’t be till closer to the end. But it depends on whether they think S3 is something they will pursue or if S2 is where they will end the series. I get the feeling that they may decide to call it quits after this coming season. With COVID and the difficulties of keeping the audience interested during the hiatus, Shin may decide it’s too hard and take a break from it all for a bit before his next new project.

  23. @nrllee ahh OK I see. Thanks for coming back. 🙂 The analysis here are really good so it is always a pleasure to read up here. I find different views are always backed up with explanation. But I know, it is hard with the cancel culture these days. I will go along with @packmule3’s decision.

JW and Jwan have displayed caring signs for SH but then, they aren’t exactly available. May be they are adults and more prepared to accept “the next best choice” in life. I will keep reading more posts as I might have missed some signs in HP 1.

  24. Ikjun started actively seeking out Shwa post divorce. To me it indicates his crush on her, similar to Minha when she looked out for Shyeong, and that other resident who was mostly shown picking up PG’s medical case because of that obvious reason. Meanwhile, Shwa in Ep. 12 was shown to make sure that the available boys i.e. Ikjun x Shyeong ordered dinner for PG who will be working late. The boys also talked about Jwan being in a long surgery but that fact just did not register in her mind. She was adamant on taking care of only PG’s food.🤭 To me that shows a lot where her priority lies, by then. And how different it was with the others. 😊

If we made these comparisons we will be able to distinguish who likes who more than the other, and who wants to get the attention from the one they are crushing on.

  25. Hello!
I’m neither a Flower Gardener nor a Winter Gardener. I just want to see a logical and cohesive story unfold. It’s really interesting to see the different theories, and I’d like to lurk and read if that’s possible. Thank you!

  26. Thank you for the analysis @packmule3 and others FG’s comment and insight

I agree with pm3, first time I watched HP I thought they are unmarried but in this episode 2 showed that SHwa, PG, and JWan are unmarried. On director Ju’s wife funeral scene, their glances are questionable seems there is a meaning there. I agree with this kinda idea, if I was JWan I will ask SHwa first instead of others.

I hope my insight can be an additional to the review and In my opinion, their glances can mean a love timeline, they review from past to present (SH-IJ-SHwa-PG) exclude JWan because he is the one who asked and suspected something between them. In Season 1, this episode revealed SH confessed that he rejected by SHwa at their college time in 99, and the end of episode 12 we know that IJ confessed (indirectly) to SHwa. I hope Season 2 will really be a time for SHwa and PG to bloom

  27. Hello.. it’s good to see posts on HP again. Have I been hiding under the rock all this time that I didn’t realise HP season 2 is coming up? Haha!

Not a hard core FG but I hated Jang’s character! She ruined it for me after her CPR comment to the mum in emergency department.

Looking forward to more posts on HP particularly on S2..the logical and detailed analysis in this blog is always enlightening. I hope the FGers in this blog would not be heavily bashed as before.. but one can only hope hey?!

  28. That is interesting interpretation of the sequence @raininthefall. The reverse order reflecting time. How ever we change the sequence it always ends up with Shwa x PG. Just like their usual order either starts with Shwa and ends with PG or vice versa i.e. karaoke. There is also the order of those who left the band station in 1999 vs in 2019. How can they make it the same yet means nothing? If the sequence means nothing we won’t see a repeat of such scene making a parallel out of them🤭.

1999 – Shyeong was the first who left. Followed by Ikjun. Then Jwan leaving Shyeong who then adoringly watched FG remained the only two practising.
2019 – on the night of Shyeong birthday, he had to leave band practise after receiving a call from minha (for a surprise celebration), followed by ikjun who received a call from his resident. Like in 1999, Jwan was the last one who left his position empty due to the death of his baby patient.

Shyeong 1st to confess – rejected
Ikjun 2nd to confess – result unknown
Jwan confessed but to Iksun🤭🤭🤭 Did he ever confess to Shwa?🤔🤔🤔
PG ??? Grrr… we know nothing about this guy, yet again🤦🏻‍♀️

PG, again, is the odd one. The guy who stays with her, nevertheless. Both never leave their positions either in 1999 or in 2019.

    https://ourpsychicfg.tumblr.com/post/641778187862409216/nb-30042020-shin-pd-chose-3-best-scenes-in

  29. @Viva I believe the final kiss in Ep12 was a wish/dream. Probably made up in the mind of IJ (Dr Romantic). So I believe Jwon stayed true to his “first love” SHwa.

I dissected the kiss from the background music – because musically it’s a really odd piece of music to use for a scene depicting passion? It’s lewd and jarring? It made little sense to my musical self so I tracked it down. 😂
    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Y0Zv7vqKajXUDHdCTHaxspP_hFWb67ZVl8t8lokWCsI/

Then there’s the Cinderella metaphor that keeps popping up throughout the show
    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Ue0ikmEGnWXSdUVrWjhO6zarWQ9oGLyo7WhQZSAEXHU/

PD Shin also puts on the sunset filter for relationship endings. You will notice it with the strange orange tinge on certain scenes.
    1. The scene where Jwon talks to the mother of the child who died in Ep1.
    2. The scene where IJ and his wife talk on the rooftop – she initiates divorce.
    3. The scenes of Jang in the courtyard – talking to Rosa and IJ on separate occasions.
    4. The scenes of ChiHong with SHwa – even during their conversation inside her office was strangely orange.

The other thing that LeeShin seem to do with relationship endings is to have flashbacks to their first meetings. I think it’s authentic to do this because when a relationship is coming to an end, you wax nostalgic and you start to think back to when it first started. If the relationship is to continue, you’re less likely to do this because you’re excited about the future and new memories you would make. So ChiHong had his first meeting with SHwa flashback. Jang had her first meeting with JWon flashback as well. So I think it is safe to assume that their romantic liaison ended for real when she had that talk with IJ in the courtyard. They would still work side by side as work colleagues (professor/resident) but the romance has been put to bed. I do think however that LeeShin will still continue trolling in S2 so we will likely see the dinner (meal) date that Jwon promised Jang over surgery (note he was pushed to do this by the anesthesiologist, he didn’t ask her himself). And he’s taken Bae and the nurse out on movie/meal “dates” as well so I wouldn’t put too much into it. 😂

  30. True, @nrlee. Shinlee have established earlier that PG has no issue taking his staff out for casual dates like to the movie or meal. And the ER nurse explained the importance of it i.e. not romantically related. For that one resident he was forced to offer an invitation. What is weird he didn’t even bother to buy her a bread, at least, post surgery when they were talking at the garden outside. Not even coffee. Not like how Ikjun treated her i.e. making sure she eats etc. 🤷‍♀️ So, gotta expect a movie outing and dinner outing requests being fulfilled to troll.

@Miracle23 and @nrllee, I am in awe of the amount of research, background checks and analyses that you’ve put into this series. What a good and thorough job!

I await news of how we will do the rewatch. 😉

  32. Me reading these posts just like regaining memories. As we get closer to rewatch time, and and also to season 2, I feel like I need to recharge my canoe, by adding theories to my fuel tanks. A bit of taking a look back give me some energy 😎

  33. @GB it’s because I treat the drama as a whodunit. 😂. The “Alice” in me can’t help but head down that rabbit hole to figure out the anomalies. This was also why I dropped out of watchingTKEM and analyzing it. I didn’t have the mental faculties that @packmule3 had to multitask and switch between the 2. 😂

  34. Hi guys, I just recently watched HP and have been addicted and so invested in the characters, especially Songhwa. I’m not really a FG shipper but I don’t mind who Songhwa ends up with (except SH because I love the GomGom ship) so I like reading different ship theories and discussions. Right now I’m more of an IkSong shipper since it’s the current canon pairing but I quite like the Flower Garden couple idea.

I came across this site and would like to read FG ship theories but unfortunately the posts are password protected. I understand why as it has been the case as it’s to protect the FG members of this blog from bashing. I still hope I would be given an access to the posts because I would love to read all the FG theories (I have a lot of time while waiting for the 2nd season. heh) but would understand if not. I’m usually just a lurker and reader but I would try to join the discussions for season 2 if I can.

  35. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@nrllee, I understand perfectly. No way I could have done the amount of thinking that HP required on top of analysing another show. The thing is that people like me who are coming in ‘from the outside,’ so to speak, have no clue or inkling that there IS a rabbit hole LOL. I was constantly much perplexed. Now knowing with my head what’s going on, still does not translate into something I deeply care about. It’s strange. I’ll just go along for the ride and join you all in your canoe which I think has grown into a medium sized yacht.

Perhaps S2 will make more sense and engage my heart a bit more.

  36. Thanks GB 😊 I would not have realised the parallels to reply series if not for pm3 and many of our members here who have been following ShinLee’s projects. They helped me a lot in my write ups (kanaya, nrllee, annp18, kangdongju, parker, 011sn – thanks loves😘!). Before HP, I only watched Reply 1994 and Prison Playbook. After revisiting R94, I can’t believe the number of imitations ShinLee took from there to put into HP. And of course they added the variations just like the music Canon by Pachelbel. 😅 This is no longer a tribute. They are making R94 2.0. If we have Najung entertaining Chilbong’s lunch dates, a walk home together at night, dinner at a convenient shop etc. you can bet PG might have been written to do similarly to that resident who craves his attention, unless of course she already has a change of heart. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

  37. Hloo guys!!!Thanks a lot for making this safe place for FG. I have been waiting for HP rewatch from a long time and its finally happening.Lets wait for the unanswered ques to be answered in this season.Thank you to all FG for staying strong from others criticism and making our canoe safe.
Hoping you all to be safe and lets gather around for season 2 again.

  38. @GB. That’s the beauty of this pairing’s work. You can watch it with no expectations of couplings and just go with the overall camaraderie, interactions and general issues raised. That in itself is entertaining enough to keep you watching. A lot do this and avoid the fan wars. But I like the detective work. It’s rather ingenious and there are no other writers/PDs that I know of that do this so well. And that’s novel. 😂. It’s fun to find the Easter eggs. And like @miracle23 said, it’s even more fun when you have a bunch of like minded friends who act like catalysts for new ideas/links. Without the many FGrs here I wouldn’t have made many of the links that I have to write my articles.

  39. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@nrllee, that’s the word, ‘catalysts’. That’s what I really needed for the times I was attempting to keep a thread going. I did mention that it felt like I was talking to myself. I had no clue who and how many lurked or what they thought and there was nothing to get me started on a new idea or spin on things.

I look forward to S2 and how much fun it will be to maybe just sit back and enjoy.

  40. Welcome back BluePearl, and welcome to Ayu too! Do join our discussions in the Throwback Thursday posts, Ayu. Look forward to read you there😊

  41. Thank you for the welcome Miracle23. Yes, I’ll try my hardest to participate in the discussions. I didn’t watch the Reply series and PP so I cannot see any easter eggs relating to them.

I hope Songhwa and Jwon would have more interactions and scenes together in S2 as I love their dynamic within the group. They are really similar in their values and I love how they are just so in tune that they barely have to say anything for the other to know what needs to be said. Like JWon just knows by looking at her or talking to her on the phone that something’s bugging her or there’s something wrong with her. Likewise for SHwa when she knows almost everything (except him being DLL) about what’s going on with JWon even before he says anything.

  42. @Mircale23 @nrllee I wonder if the show uses friend zone and obvious crushes to disguise true love. Sometimes people show they care, but then disguise as best friends. Sometimes they share secret and understand each other in a special way, but then the show distracts us with obvious crushes. I remembered during my first witch, I thought SHwa and JW are closed enough to share his secret (Daddy Long Leg) and that is special. But the show has already gave us the line with Dr Jang then. IJ and ChiHong were in Shwa’s line so my focus was to work out who to eliminate between these two. Now, when I rewatched a little of ep 10 to refresh my memory on the Daddy long leg talk. There was another meal. I did notice who stayed, who left, who was chosen by SHwa when she asked for help…

@nrllee Wow! Impressive! I didn’t know about the Cinderella metaphor and the music! Thanks for enlightening me 🙂 I went back to watch that scene in ep 12 and the Reply 1988 as a result. Yes I do hope they take us back to 1999 so we can see it from SHwa’s point of view.

  43. Hello packmule3 and fg team. I would like to thank you all for the entertaining and informative threads on HP. I really like the characters and their friendship and wish them all true love. I’m in for all the surprises and plot twists the writerduo concocts (or not surprises because this blog and the comments are right ;-).

I was a bit lost with the first episodes but with these posts it makes so much more sense. So a big heartfelt thanks for that and it makes me really wonder what I miss on clues in my relationships in real life. I hope I may join the rewatches and S2.

  44. Hi Viva, I find what is lacking in HP as opposed to the reply series are the narrations on life perspectives/ PoVs from the main casts. Instead, ShinLee included, for example, the parallels of Shwa’s scenes in between episodes throughout the entire series to show her thoughts, her different treatmeants towards each of the boys. Take another example – the scene where the boys visited her office when she was working late (excluding Shyeong). She only stopped working and paid attention to PG. And when they closed her door and left, you can see she was framed into the small window pane on the door. Look at her different reactions. It’s like showing the window to her mind on the subjects i.e. those visitors. They made Shwa had multiple same scenes like these with different outcomes. For me, that are her PoVs. It’s pretty clear who she cares the most if we looked at it from that angle.😊

I really feel something happened in Ep. 11 karaoke session between PG, Shyeong and Jwan. These boys were having boys talk on their issues. Again, PG becoming his real self with no filter when he was drunk. He was showing aegyo to Shwa similar to in Ep. 10 when he stopped Shwa from making coffee and he proceeded to tell her about DLL. In that karaoke room, we were shown how quick Shwa turned soft and smiling lovingly when she interacted with PG. I hope we can see a flashback from that karaoke room to clarify things especially that he then next decided to stay. Something from the talk must have triggered him.

  45. Episode 2, I found…
    The scene with the maggots!!!
    (best scene of the episode)

1:07:25 – Scene with the maggots.
She looks at the maggots, fascinated.
Then she gently, carefully and lovingly removes them from the leg, without hurting them.
Her eyes are so full of envy that you’d swear she’s putting them in a doggy-bag for her evening lunch.Unless it’s for her houseplant.
Luckily, another guy comes along and calls her “Dr. Bae”.
At least I learn the name of the character, live, by seeing this character!
She’s advised to use tongs, but she’s so obsessed with her maggot hunt that she doesn’t answer.
This girl loves to fiddle with maggots!

1:07:56 – One of the doctors (whose name I don’t know, but who is part of the Team of 5 if I remember) looks at this female doctor. Here there is a slightly insistent shot.
The guy’s expression seems rather disgusted. He blinks once. Mouth closed. I wonder if he didn’t have a little stomach upset…
Then again a shot on the female doctor. This is shot as something romantic. We see her tilt her head to the side to clear her neck. Finally, the kind of shot that we often have when a man feels a first emotion for a woman, in some dramas. Or when you want to make a woman desirable. 🙂

At the end of the episode, there is a discussion between two doctors. Including the one who was in the maggot scene.
We learn that he had an affair with So What (fortunately, now I had time to memorize her name). 🙂

  46. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE Reading you I. just. can’t. You’ve properly dissected the maggot scene with every degree of meticulousness and yet without the accuracy of reference. I can’t stop laughing.

  47. @GB,
    It’s the power of lo..
    Huh, no.
It’s the power of nonsense humor. 😉
I can’t remember any of the names in this drama, and with the subtitle overload or moments of mindless absence, I barely have time to see the actors or the situations. I understand nothing.
Any surgical dissection I could do is doomed to become a Monty Python sketch. 🙂

  48. @packmule3 ooo that’s the song I’ve been curious about, Introduce me a good person. It fits SHwa and her quest to find her true love. She’s been dating several times and now after her recent break-up, she’s been saying again and again that she prefers/likes to be single. And the song fits Jwan and fits perfectly well with Flower Garden couple. That cross-gaze between JWon and SHwa in Director’s Ju’s wife funeral gav me goosebumps again hehehehehe

I will repeat the song again

Someone who has practice in love (JWon has been “in love” with his patients and has his broken hearts and cried so many times when he failed to safe them)
I hope for someone who gives attention to even a little matter
and have a lot of experiences in love

    When I cry even once,
    I want to receive comfort
inside the embrace of someone who has delicate eyes…

My everything that’s tired of being alone
I want to leave it to someone who has delicate hands
And if I can forget my loneliness…

(Let me pray for FG to grow)
