My Roommate is a Gumiho: Eps 7 & 8 Open Thread

The thread is now open for spoilers, theories, and discussions. We need more laughter, and less stress these days.

I think this is Dam’s go-signal to continue liking Mr. Fox. Gifs from dramaism’s tumblr.

  1. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks @pkml3. I can’t keep up. I will watch what I can but I’m leaving my brain to rest in DAYS or in a daze. LOL.

  2. I skipped watched this morning. Will rewatch tonight. I may need to stop making predictions because I hate being wrong 😅. This went in an unexpected or expedited direction fast. The only thing I’ll say for now is that happily it looks like this won’t be a serial killer/romance drama! Yay! That combination does not work for me (I am looking at you “strong woman do bong soon”)

  3. Thank you, @packmule3. I didn’t think Mr Fox would act so quickly. I believe he has put himself on that Ahjussi path that you mentioned.

@Good Twin, yes, just when it seems he’s confessing to her, maybe even proposing to her with all the talk about family, he says he lied and tells her that he used her as a source of energy. And all of those wishes he made for her she won’t know about when she ‘wakes.’

So I’m wondering why Mr Fox didn’t heed the words of the Mountain Deity and keep Dam close if that is his best way to stay away from being exterminated or becoming an evil Maegu. It was early autumn when the marble tranferred to Dam and in Ep. 7 it seems like early spring, so they would have had some time to work things out. Is this a case of noble idiocy?

(Frankly and shallowly, I think Mr Fox could have taken a leaf out of Hye-Sun’s book and dated her and made her happy himself. Best chance of a blue marble in a hurry, imo.)

  4. Thankfully the serial killer was used as a cautionary tale and not as the propellant of the second half. Then the stakes are intrinsic and not extrinsic.

Still falling in love and in misunderstandings =D .

  5. Ok these are the wishes.

Mr Fox’s wish for Lee Dam.

1 – you have a beautiful smile, so I wished you would be able to smile often.

2 – you can make your dreams come true, so I wished you wouldn’t give up on what you like.

3 – and I wished you wouldn’t get hurt by others. I wished you would always be well.

Lee Dam’s wish for Mr Fox.

I wished I can come back here next year with you. But not like this. I wished you could come with me as a human.

  6. So, Mr Fox has taken his marble baby back, does that mean he’s just waiting for his time up and die?

He’ll use the time to spend it with Dam and get together with her then die?

    No! No! No! 🙅🏻‍♀️🙅🏻‍♀️🙅🏻‍♀️

  7. @agdr03 – that would be a Do Do Sol Sol La etc ending and that would be malpractice. He found his mate after a 1000 years but doesn’t get a happy ending? What writer would be that cruel in a romantic comedy? Mountain Spirit was a bit opaque. I guess this is what deities do these days (ahem DAYS). Loved the beautiful wishes! @FGB4877 – good point and well said! @Fern I think (emphasis on “think” because we are talking vague deity pronouncements)the Mountain Spirit was telling him he could learn something from Dam. Hopefully Fox earned karma points by releasing the marble early. The experience in the library really scared him.
@pm3 thanks for the open thread and the funny gifs.

  8. I’m just ranting @Good Twin 😁 I have faith in this writer. After all the romantic/poetry dialogues, we don’t get a happy ending? No way! 🙅🏻‍♀️

Yes, the library scene was scary and I’m just glad the evil gumiho is gone.

I knew the first love lookalike was a front. But Dam was so sad then.

  9. @agdr03 you’re better at this than me. The clues were there with the vase of roses breaking in the hospital and Fox’s home (I think it was both locations) and then a woman (who looks just like his first love) shows up as a florist. But I didn’t figure it out until I saw the way she was pruning the rose when he walked in.

  10. When I was watching Episode 7, I imagined @WEnchanteur commenting “Too much talking; not enough showing!”

SPOILER ALERTS: The shadow turning from cat to human was a nice effect. I’m glad the cat wasn’t evil, as I’m a cat lover. And the “old man” being dressed in white…hah! Maybe we should nickname him Fluffy or Snowball, of another name typical of a longhaired white kitty.

If we have any questions about the allegiance of Ms. Ex-Fox, I think they were put to rest during the conversation between Snowball, Sir Fox, and herself. When the mountain spirit brought up the possible extermination of Sir Fox, she took up a defensive posture, using her arm to shield Fox. That was brave of her, as a human, to stand up to the mountain spirit on Fox’s behalf. And since even the mountain spirit, who gave the foxes the chance to become human, recognized her as being human, I think that confirms that she has, indeed, become human.

@Fern, I agree with you that Fox’s decision to reclaim his bead is, or borders on, noble idiocy. Dam is far from having her energy sapped to a dangerously low level, but I think he rushed his retrieval of the marble from her because he truly loves her and was uncomfortable deceiving her or putting her in danger. Much of what Fox said to Dam in this episode were words motivated by, and showing, love without saying the word “Saranghae.” And Dam reciprocated by expressing her concern for Fox’s wellbeing.

It is interesting that both Doom at Your Service and My Roommate is a Gumiho have arrived This week at the romantic complication of memory loss. It will be interesting to see how each drama handles this hurdle. DAYS is different in that MM seems to have lost his memory too, whereas Fox is fully aware of past and present. If Fox truly loves Dam, which I believe he does, he’ll be in a one-sided love because all Dam’s memories of him are gone. But as we discussed on the DAYS thread, there’s memory that’s like data retrieval, but there’s also emotional memory that’s stored as feelings rather than thoughts. Think of Eun Tak in Goblin feeling sad without knowing why until Shin returns to her and she finally recognizes him. There’s even muscle memory, as we saw in Navillera. Not all memory is activated consciously.

  11. @Good Twin, no, I’m not good at picking up this things. 😁 You’re good because you connected the roses and the vases. I just found it odd that all of a sudden everyone shows up that’s connected to Mr Fox. The first love would be the best one to choose as a front.

  12. Kalimera everyone!

I enjoyed watching last night’s episode. I understand why Mr. Fox took the bead from Dam, though. Their relationship was based on a contract that was not valid, since Mr. Fox lied to her.

A relationship cannot have deep roots if it is based on lies.
It is true that Mr. Fox didn’t lie for anything else to Dam, but this.

He even omitted that she was in danger by the maegu. That shook him to bits, frightened him a lot. That’s why he decided to take his Marble back, he didn’t want anyone to target Dam in order to hurt him. He didn’t want Dam to die, as his first love did.

You might think is a noble idiocy, but Mr. Fox is who he is and that’s why Dam (and us) like him so much…

I agree with @Welmaris, about the feelings that linger, even if memory is lost.

But? Is Dam’s memory really lost? I don’t think so.

If the Mountain Spirit knows more about her, and from what we have seen, in the past episode where Mr. Fox couldn’t hypnotize her mom, then Dam might have her memory back and just pretend.

She will be propably mad at him for not telling her sooner.

She is the type that if she knew, she would keep the marble in her, so as Mr. Fox could become a human. Their wishes show a lot about what they feel for each other.

Let us see how she will respond to Mr. Tiger tonight.

P.S. Mr. Fox as a History Professor will be pretty awesome!
I saw some jaw dropping by the female students…LMAO!

  13. I love how Mr. Fox’s doodle on Dam’s book is basically the emoji she always use (◉∇◉) + her hair. He puts attention to her, even to her typing habit.

But I got confused with Mr. Fox’s answer: “She’s suddenly come back to me for a very long time” when Dam asked him about his first love. Does it refer to the drawing? Can someone please explain it to me ? T^T

  14. @Idungkulitayam, ‘She’s suddenly come back to me for a very long time’ – I think it was a slight mistranslation. It looked odd to me, too. I think perhaps he meant ‘She has returned to my memories recently after a very long time.’ He had a nightmare about her starting shortly after Dam moved into his house and what happened to her has been on his mind – especially since Hye-sun keeps reminding him.

Good catch about Dam’s emoji. I forgot about that. She will realise it in a while, too.

  15. Kalimera, Cleopatra. Having slept on it, I believe that you and the others are correct that he rushed his retrieval of the marble because he loves her.

It also occurred to me (why do I think of these things in the middle of the night?) that the police are interested in him now. The Maegu who took his shape could have left Mr Fox’s fingerprints (and DNA?) all over his victims. He could be in very serious trouble, because there is no way to explain that. Dam would become involved as well. He may be thinking to protect her from that situation also.

@agdr03, thank you for writing the wishes down. I hope they all come true. None of this dying stuff at the end. No, ack, phooey, 😤.

    Looking forward to tonight’s episode.

  16. @fern ah, it makes more sense now. Thanks for making it clear:) At first I thought he already saw her reincarnation but it didn’t seem right for me, something just didn’t click

  17. I’d like a layout picture of first love’s picture against Dam’s doodle both made by Mr Fox. 😂

@Fern, laughing at that, phooey! 😂

  18. Dear @Fern,

I don’t think that the maegu had his DNA or fingerprints.
It is a mirage. I don’t think she /he can cloned someone, even into the slightest details. That’s why there were not any data behind.

Maegu was an evil spirit, that means she didn’t have substance all the time.
Even Mr. Fox was drained after that date with Mr. Tiger.

So, they might investigate but they won’t be able to press charges. 🙂

  19. @Idungkulitayam, I don’t speak Korean, so it’s just a hunch. I could be WAY off track. 😅😉

@agdr03, yes, his doodle v his watercolour portrait. Pfffft. He has to do a watercolour of Dam now for her to find, right? Or an oil painting. Or a sculpture of her.

  20. @Cleopatra, in order to advance the story, logic doesn’t always prevail in dramaland. However I truly hope that you are correct about the maegu. 🙂 In any case, Mr Fox could teleport himself out of any jail, I suppose, and become a fugitive. But my imagination is running away with me now.

I saw on Soompi that Hyeri tops actor ranking and Jang Ki Yong is number 3.

  21. Dear @Fern,

I read in MDL, that so far they are following the Webtoon.
The only addition they did was the maegu. So no worries about it! 😉

I started reading the webtoon, but only the first 20 episodes are loaded and the webtoon has 170!

  22. @Cleopatra, oh my word, you are dedicated! 👍👏 The episode count on the webtoon makes me wonder if there is a potential second season.

  23. @Fern,

I was just curious! I started Yumi Cells for that reason to understand what the series will be about!

I don’t think I will manage to read it all though. It takes too long to translate it in English… o.O

  24. @Cleopatra, Pity there’s not a translated version already! Dedication is an understatement…👍👏

  25. @Fern,

    That is true! 😀 *bows*

  26. Hi All!!! Ep 7 is a surprise. Good surprise for ending the evil killer gumiho and nipping that in the bud and not drag it til the end. I think the point of showing that is to emphasize the possibility of gumiho turn maegu for Fox if he does not become human.

And time is running out for him. But instead of thinking how he can turn his marble blue, Fox came clean to Dam and we have a do over due to memory loss as the marble get extracted. Why did he do that? He is in love with Dam and does not want to continue deceiving her and using her. I think he will try to pursue her without the marble contract. Why become a professor in her uni then? Argh, it irks me when people make this “self sacrificing” choice without consulting the other person that will be affected. It creates even more misunderstandings. They should have talked this through.

Both are in love with each other. Their wishes are not for themselves. Sweet! I think that’s the foreshadowing of a happy ending and wish fulfillment. At least, that’s MY wish!

Now the 2nd ML has a chance with the do over. I wonder if Dam will have memories of the bet. If Tiger’s memory is intact, he will continue to work on being a nice person. Uh oh, the competition is on.

So much parallel topics with DAYS on contracts, deity/spirit, marble, possibility of death for FL, broken contract means memory loss, long and lonely existence, living together and do-overs. There’s poetry in one, there’s cryptic lines on another. And yet the storylines and people behaviors are different.

  27. @Janey, yes, I have a hard time keeping the two dramas apart in my mind at times. Even the seasons are similar. The men’s gorgeous upscale houses with precious porcelain vases. Etc.

  28. o h m y g o s h i just finished today’s episode AND MAN WHEN I TELL YOU I WENT ON AN EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER-
    *spoilers ahead*
    my hopes
    – writer please let them recognise their feelings for each other in the next episode i will trust the preview-
    – idk i think hye sun and jae jin look good together BYE i hope they get a story arc together even though they may not work out?
    – clarification to dam from woo yeo on hye sun and his relationship (honestly i just want them to clarify everything and let the ship sail HAHA)

my theories and speculations for episode 9, i will label them by the shots
1.1 holding flowers for dam WHO????
    2.1 are they cohabitating again?
    2.2 they both look happy~!
    3.1 taken in school perhaps!
4.1 more school shots, wondering if dam visited his office
4.2 think it’s gonna be an interrupted kiss LOL
5.1 same clothes and office background! so i think he’s happy that they cleared up perhaps and are back with their sweet relationship dynamic
6.1 ah! i think woo yeo brought his students on an excursion trip to the place he used to live in the goryeo dynasty. the fish sail!
9.1 did woo yeo purposely make the paper fly so he could pick it up for dam- HDASJSFAJ
lost count; i hope hye sun brings them (wooyeo and dam) closer together despite her past relationship with woo yeo! she’s wearing the same thing, so she may be taking a ride in woo yeo’s car after the field trip
cut to dam staring at the place where she and woo yeo made wishes, where he wished for her safety and health and him to turn human, i think this scene would be before her visiting his office. previews tend to be tricky
yup! hye sun is taking a ride home in woo yeo’s car
seems like dam revisited the place again after the field trip! (guessing after cause it wouldn’t make sense for her to go before and woo yeo arranging for a history trip), dam is wearing different (?) clothes but woo yeo has the same clothes as the field trip. hmmmm
leave your theories in the comments! would love to hear them. happy watching!
    peace out 🙂

  29. @bleh, while we’re theorising; how about Dam’s little brother + Sun Woo’s little sister?

How can he not see that she remembers him?

I’m actually feeling bad for Sun Woo as well.

  30. I feel for both Dam and Mr. Fox of them 🙁 … Quoting Gabriel García Márquez and his 13 lines to live happier:

5.- “The worst way to miss someone is, to be seated by him/her and know you’ll never have him/her.”

    Source: https://direstraitsblog.com/quotes/life-happiness-love-13-powerful-thoughts-gabriel-garcia-marquez/

On the other hand and going back to the philosopy of this writer that “honesty always trump dishonesty” the conversation of Clingy Friend with Ms. Fox after the catfight with her ex leaves Ms. Fox speechless.

Loved also how Dam’s Brother and Tiger’s sister creates a date out of thin air.

Still falling in love and in misunderstandings.

  31. Now that I have read Gabriel García Márquez quotes this one goes to Tiger:

1.- “I love you not for whom you are, but who I am when i’m by your side.”

The photography of both their boots at the end of the date where Tiger confesses, his boots three steps lower and him looking up to her was a sign of submission as in letting it up to her. Dam looking to Mr. Fox and missing him even if he is almost besides her… and Mr. Fox aching in a reverse Florentino Ariza moment, since he observes her enchanting gait… walking away from him.

  32. @FGB4877, ‘The worse way to miss someone’ quote goes especially well when Mr Fox shows up with an umbrella to protect Dam again, in the rain.

But finally right at the end, Mr Fox recognises his special feelings are not just familial, nor platonic.

  33. @Fern: Well, love Mr. Fox but he is as dense as possible for a 999 years old senior. Thankfully he has sister Ms. Fox to coach him.

On another note, Ms. Fox is all about “game”. For her, seduction is an art she has mastered in her 700 years. On the other hand Dam’s friend is honest and steadfast. As Mr. Fox mentioned earlier “Honesty always wins over dishonesty” so he will bypass her defenses.

BTW, the shower rain is called in Korea a “Fox Rain” (no joke, it was part of “My Girlfriend is a Gumiho” back in 2010). So he fabricated the Fox Rain for him to have an excuse to meet Dam again… and he is unaware that he tried to “cute meet” her XD .

  34. Kalimera everyone,

I really enjoyed last night’s episode. It was good enough for our Mr. Fox and Dam to realize some things while they are apart. Well, mostly Mr. Fox realized that he likes Dam as a woman.
I really loved it when he thought: [How Dare I…She’s so young.]

Dam still is uncertain of Mr. Fox’s motives. She wants to believe that he cares about her and came to check on her, but she finds herself lame for those thoughts.
I am glad she held her stance. She fakes ignorance and he cannot read her.

Ms. Fox though, I am pretty sure she will realize it sooner than Mr. Fox,
    that Dam remembers everything.

  35. Kalimera, @Cleopatra. Hye-sun already was suspicious when she saw Dam crying. From the look on their face when they met up at the ending, I thought that Hye-sun had already confirmed it in her mind. I wonder if she will interfere somehow since she is protective of both of them. Dam is very perceptive, but she is also very hurt, confused and angry.

For Dam and for Mr Fox, don’t you think there is a parallel mis about their interpretation of their best friends? Dam is wondering about Hye-sun’s relationship with Mr Fox. I think that she was struck by Hye-sun’s words about the difficulty of living for centuries. Then HS and Mr Fox came out of the car together. Mr Fox overheard Dam telling Sun Woo that she likes someone else. The camera emphasised Mr Fox’s view of Dam holding onto Jae-Jin’s hand and her insistence on supporting him alone.

Oh, it was a good episode. But I think it will have a difficult time competing with HP2 on the same night.

  36. Dear @Fern,

I did see it before HP2. It made my insides warm.
HP2 was a rollercoaster of emotions for me, but lets talk about it, on the HP2 thread!

I agree with you. Their friends help them sometimes a lot, others not.
Still, if Dam was perceptive enough, she would understand that Hye Sun is Mr. Fox’s friend and not his lover.

I think that Hye Sun looks to Mr. Fox as her hyung.
That’s why she is so concerned about him. She wants him to become happy and human.

As for Jae Jin, he is both a man and a child. He knows what it is right for him, but he is going back and forth. That’s why Dam believes she has two younger brothers.

Here is another edit Ella aka Felicity Queen did.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAdIXjbfg5U

    Enjoy!

  37. @FGB4877, of course you are right. Mr Fox is as dense as a newly hatched fledgling despite his age.

It’s interesting to watch Hye-sun ‘protect’ Jae-jin. She is coaching him, too, but his frank words are intriguing to her. Like Fox she seems to be another who has never fully loved – or if she has, she doesn’t show it. She did say ‘we’ when she was speaking to Fox in an earlier episode about the dangers of caring. Her game may be a reaction to a past event – or not.

Jae-jin is starting to warm up to Hye-sun when she admits that she bypassed normal admissions to college and what her qualifications actually are. He is so warm-hearted.

Thank you for the information about the Fox Rain. 💐 Mr Fox is trying hard. This is my first Gumiho experience so I didn’t pick up on it.

  38. Thank you for the edit @Cleopatra.

I think Dam is normally perceptive, but her thoughts are clouded by her emotions at the moment.

I haven’t watched HP yet. It was already late when I watched through Gumiho and looked at its comments. I will restrain myself until I get some work done at home today. I only saw one comment about HP2. 😬

  39. Hi everyone.. i just finishing watching the 8th episode.. is it only me who really like the scene of Hyesun and Jaejin. I was laughing whenever they have the misunderstood conversation. And when Jaejin thought that Hye Sun is a funny girl.
As much as I love Mr Fox here.. I really hope PD nim will add more scenes of Hye Sun and Jae Jin for more laughters.. we really need this to balancing the hospital playlist and DAYS 😅😅

I don’t understand why the marble turned to blue and back to red again. I hope he will find a way to make the marble blue so that he becomes human. And Dam’s wish will come true.. I’m sad looking at her so heartbroken having no idea that Mr Fox also has a feeling for her. From the preview it seems MrFox finally realized that Dam still remember.. will we see the kiss or hug scene of them next week? I hope so.. 🍀🍀🍀

@Cleo thank you for the video link. I like that soundtrack. My All by Kim Na Young.. her voice is soft and calming..

  40. Some of my thoughts on Ep8… with spoilers…

As we figured out, Dam has retained her memories even after the marble is removed. I feel so sad seeing these forlorn duo with puppy eyes and longing glances. Especially for Dam who doesn’t smile that much anymore. With her personality, she would have protested or at least had conversation about the situation during the extraction but I think Fox had hypnotized her so she did not have any say on it during that time.

I like that Dam responded honestly to Tiger that she likes someone else. Fox heard but he does not think it’s him (since he assumed he erased her memory) but… BFF JaeJin!? Hahaha. Fox realizes he has deeper feelings for Dam, wanting to be around her, worried about her and literally stalking her. Dam is moving up on the totem pole of relationships!!! But still peppered with more misunderstandings and even jealousy.

BFF JJ and Hyesun’s interactions are progressing well. She meddled during the conversation of JJ and ex gf to show that he has moved on. “On Saturday, he’s mine!” She is all sly mind and being on top of her game while JJ is all about heart, no games. She is befuddled with him, he will slowly break her barriers unknowingly. Oh, and they had a funny almost-kiss scene due to misinterpreted idioms.

Looking forward to next week… the preview showed Fox realized she remembers as they visited the shrine. And I want to see the Saturday date of JaeSun ship.

  41. @Moonstar512, the marble momentarily changing to blue is a plot device to indicate potential, as in a seed of a possible fulfilled design.

We are all born homo sapiens sapiens, but we become humans by our relations. And a single moment of love can enlighten (or complicate XD ) a long existence. Personally I think that pure Eros is a force of nature, so it is best when tempered and interlaced by Philos and Agaphe.

Falling in love and in misunderstandings 😉

  42. @Janey, the almost kiss with JJ and HS was so good. JJ thinks her lack of knowledge is interesting and funny. I have a feeling that she will learn a lot about idioms from JJ compared to Mr Fox, who was rather superior, and as we learned a bit hurtful, in regards to her learning.

  43. @Fern – I had to freeze my screen to see some of the animation and notes after the almost-kiss. “His purity, jeopardized. Her pride, ruined”. Bwahaha 🤣

BFF JJ is sweet and kind. He understood the mishap and how Hyesun made a literal translation. I agree, he can be a good teacher for Hyesun.

  44. I read an interesting supposition on reddit I think that maybe Lee Dam’s lineage includes a former guniho. Might explain the ridiculous family slogan “live life on your own” (a slogan better suited to Fox) and maybe the absentee father whose absence is still unexplained. e almost kiss between JJ and Hyesun was hysterical!

  45. @GoodTwin – that’s an interesting theory although I would bet the Gumiho is the mom.

  46. @Good Twin & @Janey, a former Gumiho mother? Cool idea. Because she said Dam had her father’s good taste.

This is off topic, but you’ve made me wonder. Given that neither Fox nor Hye-sun seem to have any family does that mean that Gumihos never reproduce? Could a current Gumiho get pregnant from or impregnate a human? Wait, that is a useless question because it depends on the writer-nim’s imagination.

  47. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Everyone, Your comments are so entertaining! Love the endless possibilities in the conjectures. Especially the possible ancestral ex-gumiho in Lee Dam’s life. Why not!

@FGB Your point is good. Whether we are merely homo sapiens or truly human depends on much more than a magic marble. It takes the genuineness of Dam and the odd contradictory mix of foxy-naivete wisdom of Hye Sun, to teach our once arrogant Mr Fox a thing or two.

Conversely it’s the sweetly genuine and selfless JJ who’ll teach Hye Sun what is really seductive. LOL

  48. @GB, in the Vijñāna-Bhairava-Tantra Shakthi asks Shiva for the answer of how to know the Unknowable… Shiva will answer her with 112 methods of meditation – the whole Tantra. There is a method he conspicuously leaves aside: Surrender as in someone surrendering to Love or to the Unknown.

That is to say that I suspect that this writer’s philosophy of “honesty always win over dishonesty” will win the day in JJ and Ms. Fox’s case 😉 .

For both Dam and Mr. Fox it is an unconscious process. Mr. Fox fabricating a shower rain – a Fox Rain – to have an excuse to come to her with an umbrella doesn’t get that he is trying to meet cute her, that is, to correct the way they meet in this second chance. Dam by avoiding him and giving him the cold shoulder acts as a negative image (in a photographic way) of what romance should be. It is love but inverted by hurt.

@Cleopatra: Kalimera!, yes… sometimes her friends are ineffectual but that is not what you have friends for 😉 . They have her back and protect her fiercely form the rumors Tiger’s acquaintances are making. JJ comes from this juvenile (God bless the young!!! =D ) idea that Eros is everything so he is easily shaken by his feelings. Later in life you learn that the starting point of Love (not the middle nor the end but the beginning) is the conscious decision of putting someone else’s best interests before yours. Then you can be mad at your kids and still cook to them, or dissapointed with someone and still give them another chance =D . That is not to say that as an elder you can’t be swayed but it is harder.

Hope you and your families are well,

    FGB4877

  49. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FGB This is why we missed you on other threads. You add so much to our analyses.

Yes, the writer specifically puts into our main character’s mouth that honesty trumps dishonesty. And now that Fox has come clean (to an extent) to Lee Dam, and even Sun Woo has, we get a chance to see how that works out. Of course, Hye Sun has a point, Fox only now is beginning to come clean towards himself.

He’s been lying to himself, and denying his feelings, so there is still this part that he has not been truthful about to Lee Dam. She’s not a niece or vague family member, but a real love interest.

I loved the Fox Rain metaphor – it was again a FALSE rain. A trumped up excuse, the way Fox has been coming up with excuses to spend time with Lee Dam. He has to put aside false pretenses once and for all.

When Lee Dam sees that he’s sincere, then she’ll come around. As long as she thinks she was only important to him because of the marble, she’ll pretend she cannot remember him. I was thinking that Hye Sun who is more observant and able to catch nuances in behaviour, might have guessed that Lee Dam had not forgotten.

After 999 years of denial that relationships (except 1) had meaning to him, Fox is in a quandary.

Fox to himself : “No way … (denial!) Do I like her in a different way?” This is answered when Lee Dam is pushed and falls backwards only to have Fox magically catch her. He hasn’t figured out that action speaks louder than words. He’s been using words to lie to himself and Lee Dam, but his actions don’t follow what he says. Lee Dam has been confused and frustrated by this.

Voiceover continues : “How dare I. She’s so young. Since when and how?” (He who thinks himself superior to Hye Sun and an elder to Lee Dam is stunned by his obtuseness.)

Lee Dam : “I can take care of him. You can go, Professor. Hye Sun must be waiting.” (Lee Dam again dismisses him, logically going with what she sees since Hye Sun and Fox had been in the car together.)

Fox to himself: “Why now?” (He recalls what Hye Sun says about lying to himself and the instances when he saw Lee Dam with other guys. Hye Sun had asked him if he was sure he could be OK watching Dam live her life without him. He has not yet applied the same interpretation to what Dam will think, seeing him with Hye Sun.)

Fox aloud to Lee Dam, (Hye Sun) and himself : “No, I’m not sure.” (Lee Dam will likely take issue that he is not confident in her abilities to take care of her friend and herself, LOL.

Meanwhile, let’s enjoy Fox’s chagrin at his long-term, foolish self-deception.)

By the way did you all notice how Fox’s ears can move? They are the most fox-like thing LOL. I wonder if it’s special effects or if the actor can really move his ears like that!

  51. @FGB aah thanks for that. I agree with you. It is the relationship that makes us human. I remember that Mr Fox always say that what he’s been doing is just following what humans do. But to be able to invest himself in a relationship (falling in love, misunderstanding, apologizing, sacrifice.. etc).. I believe that they are the things that will truly earn him in becoming a real human.
On the other note about relationship maybe some of you already know there is a research following certain of group people for years to find out what it is that make people happier. And the conclusion is that the good relationship with family, friends, and communities are the answer.. (it’s not the wealth, fame or power like most media campaigns in the last decades)..

@GB, yes HyeSun is always “brighter” than Mr Fox in terms of reading the situation or emotions of people, I think in the next eps she’s the one who knows first that Dam still remembers. I also like when she said to Mr Fox that she never lied to herself. Something that Mr Fox currently has to learn fast. I don’t know whether it is because it’s been too long for him in experiencing love or anything (so that he forget how it feels). His denial phase is somehow frustrating me too.
I have to check again about the ear movement I think I missed this 😅.

    @GoodTwin, Janey, Fern
Wow it would be interesting if Dam’s mom is the ex-Gumiho! That maybe also explain why Mr Fox magic didn’t work for her (besides she has a strong will).. also, Dam’s mom approved him directly. Even Dam explained that there is nothing between them, her mom wish for it instead. And in my belief, a mother’s prayer is the most effective way to wish for everything.
I also bursted with laughter seeing JJ-Hyesun the almost kiss scene. Hahaha. The animation made it more hilarious.
I like this couple.. and I hope to see a double date scene from Mr Fox-Dam and JJ-Hyesun sometime in the future..

  52. Trust broken is difficult to rebuild. Dam’s trust (what there was of it) of Tiger Boy was broken when she learned of the bet. In the back of her mind, now, will exist the fear that his actions are motivated by something that will humiliate her. Has he really changed his stripes? Who is the real Tiger Boy: the one who is insecure and kind around her, or the player? Dam may forgive Sun Woo, but because of how his former actions affected her, Dam may always be wary of him.

We can depend on Ms. ExFox to get to the core of the emotional problem while Fox has no clue. She senses that Woo Yeo’s concern for Dam isn’t just about the marble. I love the way Hye Sun, after visiting Woo Yeo, stops and muses, “Family, my foot. No guy makes a face like that to a girl he thinks of as family.” Bingo! And later in the episode, she again hits the nail on the head.
HS: Are you sure you want her to go back to her normal life? Is it really okay for you to see her doing just fine without you?
    WY: Of course.
HS: You know what? I may lie to other people, but I would never lie to myself.

I love the selection of background music in the scene where Hye Sun confronts JJ’s ex-and-wannabe-girlfriend. When HS turns around to engage with her in a contest of words and wills, a tango starts playing. There are even instrumental cat-like sounds as part of the tango. Then when JJ speaks to, and finally stands up to, his ex-girlfriend, the music changes to classic Western duel showdown music. There’s even a shaker sound, like a rattlesnake, when HS tells the ex, “On Saturday, he’s mine!”

  53. The almost kiss was hilarious, for all the wisdom and intuition about human relationships, Hyesun totally can’t read figure of speeches but can read between the lines. She is so much more sensitive and intuitive than Mr.Fox.
Then Mr.Fox can’t does not have that ability to read between the lines but his language skills is probably way better than Hyesun. Maybe that was why Hyesun turned human earlier than he did.

Thanks @FGB4877 for all the quotes! Thinking this show might be more of how we approach love and the experiences of love based on his quotes!
Fox rain!! So it is as if Mr.Fox is sad because she will possibly fall in love with someone else, Tiger boy. Perfect scene for it.

@Fern I laughed at the matchmaking siblings whom I hope get matched at some point! They are from the same school right? It would be interesting but a little extra since they do not play much role in the story.

  54. Hello everyone,

@Fern, @moonstar512 Thank you ! I am glad you enjoyed the video!

@FGB, I agree that Dam’s friends truly love her and have her back. They are true friends / φίλοι / philoi / philia.
Also Ms. Ex-Fox loves Mr.Fox and as a sibling, not as a friend.
He is the one who doesn’t realize it though.

Well, JJ is more emotional than others and feels deeply.
Eros is good but as you know is blind. I prefer Agape for the reasons you have pinpointed above.

@GB, The “How Dare…I” Is the best part ever! I respect even more Mr. Fox after this!

Thank you @GoodTwin, @Janey @Fern for that theory that in Dam’s blooline exist an ex-gumiho. It makes sense!

@Welmaris, Ms Ex-Fox is pushing Mr.Fox boundaries with her remarks. He might have intellectual intelligent, but he lacks to understand his own feelings. He is like a fossil coming back to life!

@Janey I did the same! I laughed so hard at that scene! LMAO!

  55. @Cleo, but the thing is that Mr. Fox is actually discovering that Ms. Fox is a sisterly figure to him. When Dam talks about what a family is like after sending off her mother with Dam at the airport, there is a little scene of Ms. Fox. He is connecting the dots that he has a family (sister Fox, maybe disagreeable-and-hardass-but-fair Father god of the mountain).

Now he has a love interest.

I wish to see him having colleagues and other friends. That phone without contacts was very sad, it was almost like if he did not exist but for work (with the pushy editor) and hasn’t contacted Ms. Fox for over 75 years.

  56. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FGB @Cleo your comments have finally got my mind to recognise that the major theme of family is indeed being played out over the episodes. We see families that are recognisable and those that are not recognised. In particular we see siblings.

We started off with Lee Dam and her brother, in a household with absentee parents and a strangely individualistic motto: “Live your life on your own” that values self care instead of community care, however they are also family and brother actually takes care of sister and household quite well.

We see the sibling interactions with Sun Woo and his sister. Another household without visible parents, also living their own lives on their own. I did wonder why show bothered to give us scenes in Sun Woo’s home with his sister. It was probably to provide us with another example of a sibling relationship.

And then we have Fox and Hye Sun, who really do live their own lives on their own, and decades apart. But they did meet up to chat once in a long while and they do sound like brother and sister when they bicker or compare their successes and failures. It’s Fox that Hye Sun calls for help and she automatically looks out for him and his marble. The Old Man of the Mountain might well be another absentee parent LOL.

So compared to all these relationships, we can tell that Fox and Lee Dam, while not related by blood, are actually doing the more family thing ie they are not living their own lives on their own, but are involved in each other’s lives in a big way. Show has deliberately thrown out the idea that they could ever be considered uncle and niece, and so it’s clear that they can only be love interests or go back to becoming strangers.

Maybe we’ll see that Hye Sun and Jae Jin can make something of their date, and get more involved in each other’s lives too. At least, JJ can give Hye Sun ‘lessons’ in understanding figures of speech in a non-patronising way. LOL.

  57. [too much info you probably don’t wanna know but here it goes]

I think I’ll never be able to join this thread on time since I’ll always be a week or 2 episodes behind. IQYI only gives early access to its VIP members, but I already subscribed to Netflix (which costs quite a lot for a broke student like me *cry*) /or do you guys know where to legally stream this drama in Indonesia?/

Still gonna read the threads though since I don’t mind spoilers 🙂

  58. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @idungkulitayam, I believe streaming Dramanice.site or Kissasiann.co is legal. Only the download might or might not be legal. Can you get Dramanice in Indonesia?

  59. @idungkulitayam, Is Dramanice the same as Dramacool? I use Dramacool. If you know how to add an ad blocker, it’s even more enjoyable.

  60. @idungkulitayam – I use Brave app as browser. it automatically blocks majority of the ads and has better security. Just delete the tab it creates when an ad is invoked. Then go to Dramacool. I’ve only recently discovered this and now it has opened a whole world of shows and movies from Asia! I haven’t searched a whole lot but it has Dramas and movies from SK, Japan, and China with English subtitles!

  61. @idungkulitayam, please do add to this comment stream even if you’re running a few weeks behind our viewing. You can bring us a different perspective because it is YOURS.

  62. Hey @GB,

I agree with you. Family is a theme in these series.
Let us see how it will go, right?

BTW, I am waiting for that date too!

  63. My heart is heavy for Fox especially at that elevator scene where he got the ‘don’t touch me (arm)’. 😠

But at the same time I like that Dam is really trying to distance herself from him. ‘Why would I take your umbrella?. Fox – 🥺

Tiger Sunbae needs a few more ‘steps’ of maturity before he can reach Dam and maybe then she’ll care. At least he told her that he likes her.

JJ and Hye-sun was funny. 😂 They’ll definitely learn a lot from each other.

  64. @GB @Fern @Janey, I’ve finally watched ep 8 thanks to you guys! <3 (I watched it on Dramacool. Dramanice is blocked and Kissasiann's number of episode is just messed up)

Thanks @Welmaris! They might be not significant but here are some things that I found interesting on ep 8:
    1. Dam's brother sent a cute FOX emoji to Tiger Sunbae (why am I always drawn to emojis? lol)
    2. The rain. Mr Fox used his magic to make "Fox Rain" (just like what @FGB4877 said) so he could get a chance to talk to Dam, meanwhile Dam used Mr Fox's term "just a passing rain" to describe what she thought she was to him.
    3. In this episode Mr Fox used quite a lot of magic to be with Dam. I was wondering: Was the old professor really sick? was he sick because of Mr Fox?
    4. JJ and Dam's situations mirror each other, but JJ can vocalize what he's feeling and thinking, meanwhile Dam only realized it when she heard what JJ said

  65. @idungkulitayam – yay!! Glad that worked for you. Looks like you’ve caught up as well to Ep8.
