I had to laugh. This is the first time, I’ve seen a chest-grabbing instead of wrist-grabbing. And I laughed too when the brother asked her if she had been in a fight when she got home.

but was the ride worth it? — lucaya + the shirt grab “you wanna tangle with...

I’m still trying to look for the famous “Elsa” scene. But I’ve the lamb scene. He really shouldn’t think of her as a lamb when he’s a fox by nature.

I don’t know about “My Lovely Sam Soon.” I read somewhere that it was a 2005 drama. But I do think she has Princess Leia’s hairstye.

  1. Thank you for the new thread! 🙇🏻‍♀️

That chest grabbing was funny! Dam’s eyes we’re about to pop out because she couldn’t believe it. 😂

Are we doing a rewatch? ☺️

  2. LOL! Princess Lea’s hairstyle… May the Fox be with Dam.

Thanks for the funny GIFs, @PM3. This is such an enjoyable show.

  3. LOLL.. princess Leia style! yes you’re right! I’m always amused by your gifs @packmule3.. thank you for making our days brighter.

    😀

    let’s enjoy the show..

  4. The laughs here are just what I needed. Thank you, @packmule3. I’m looking forward to tonight.

  5. Episode 11 around 3:30 … Lord that 4th wall break XD .

  6. @FGB4877, right? 😆

I’m starting to get annoyed with the old guy. I wonder what exactly he wants?

We got our wish with the two siblings finally meeting. And while Sun-woo was funny being a klutz working at Subway, we had Mr Fox being very jealous, and rightly so. The deck is stacked against him.

  7. That coffee conversation around 22:30 is the stuff of legends XD XD XD XD XD . Poor guy already thinks he has to marry Ms. Fox.

@Fern, my guess is that Mountain god is putting pressure on Mr. Fox. He said earlier that a human must be with another human. He really doesn’t want to lose another child like he did with the Maegu. I see it as a rift between a parent and a child, mirrored by the credit card rift between Tiger and his dad. But of course a child usually doesn’t understand a parent’s good intentions until later… or when dealing with its own offsprings 😉 .

Dad used to curse me with “Hijo eres, padre serás” [A son you are, a parent you will become]. Those have become some of my favourite memories 🙂 .

  8. Love that particular misunderstanding between Ms. Fox and Bumbling Guy. That mercenary streak of hers will be her doom!!! XD XD XD XD .

But somehow I feel bad for Bumbling Guy unless those misunderstandings finally sums up into an understanding of each other 😉 .

  9. So the cat is in the bag, dear @PackMule3. One of the things you answered when asked what made Humans better than a magical Gumiho. A Gumiho does not have Free Will, the possibility of choice [due to imagination (¿soul?) – this square parenthesis contains my musings] belongs to Humans. That is why he wanted to be a person. So the deity gave them a marble to be filled with human energy… but to collect it they must have had to live with humans and learn from them. To slowly become one of them.

To be honest my understanding of this drama was borrowed by “My Girlfriend is a Gumiho” and that show borrowed heavily on Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid”, so my first guess is that the McGuffin would be an immortal soul.

This viewing feels awfully lonely… where is everyone? D=

  10. Howdy!

    I’m here @FGB4877 🙂

I just finished watching episode 11.

I haven’t watched My Girlfriend is a Gumiho. I should, I like Shin Mina and LSG. 🙂

  11. The misunderstanding with JJ and HS was funny but the coffee talk made it more funnier. He was taking ‘responsibility’ and she was ready to commit too by dating him. LOL. On the side, JJ’s got a good bod! hahahha

    I just love them! hehehhe

I liked the way the details of Fox’s lovelife was told by HS but he didn’t have to be nasty to her. Where’s the rolling eyes emoji?

  12. Ha! That red light effect should have been green after the invitation to visit Fox’s house. LOL!

  13. Fox has 6 months to turn into a human. That’s what I gathered from episode 10?

I find it interesting that the marble baby just goes to Dam without any effort, well she did hit his stomach accidentally but should it be coming out just like that?

Oh and it stayed Dam yeah? I didn’t see it come back to Fox.

  14. There’s our PP with the coffee and Subway. 🙂

I like Fox’s little jealousy. I’m just glad they’re really talking it out and supporting each other.

So there’s really a history with Soo-kyeong and the Top student guy. I’m curious.

  15. @Agdr03, thank you for coming!!!, I was feeling lonely =’C . “My Girlfriend is a Gumiho” is an emotional favourite of mine, it also was my second K-Drama. I love it to death but now I can barely see a couple episodes. Didn’t understand why until in a Dramacool comment an user complained that it was marked as a comedy when the watch made her feel sad. Now I understand why.

It is the tale of a slandered, misunderstood person.

That makes it even more precious and profound in hindsight, but still makes me sad. All the people around her slandered her and all the lies made people she encountered after try to hurt them even if she did everything correctly and with the best intentions.

Still recommend, it has funny moments and you will love all the characters even the ones that are the most hurtful. They do what they think is correct, they just work with the wrong information.

Hope to read you soon!!! =D

  16. Thanks for that @FBG4877 🙂 When I get the time, I’ll definitely watch it, it’s on Netflix. 😉

Oh I have to say that I am loving the OST of this drama!

  17. Yay, work is done and done done so I can now watch. TTYL!

  18. @Janey, your May the 4th reference just hit me! XD

  19. I’m confused about the Deity—why is he trying to drive a wedge between Lee Dam and Mr. Fox in these later episodes (beyond adding complications to the story)? I think I remember him telling Mr Fox in one of the earlier episodes that Dam was very important to him/for his transformation and that he should take good care of her (this was just after he had come out of his cat form). Also he tied LD and Tiger guy with a red string of fate, but Mr Fox’s bead seems to find an easy home in her, which seems another kind of fate…

  20. @Janey, enjoy! 🙂

@BethB, I think Deity is trying to get Fox to hurry up turning into a human and if Dam is not the one that will make him turn into one then he’s showing him that he needs to let go of Dam. Hence the red string for Dam and Sunbae who are both human.

  21. Hello @FGB and @agdr03!!!

TBH, I still feel uncomfortable that a teacher is dating his student. So when they decided to previously to cool off, that’s was sad but the right thing to do under so many circumstances. But here we are. I’m putting it out here as a footnote but temporarily shelving it since it’s kdrama! 😉 I do hope this status of theirs change soon.

I get what you mean @FGB. LOL on the 4th walll treatment! That red light and music and mood… shoo!!! what a novel way to erase the tension.

I like the concept of the string and clear illustration of the events that seem to pull Dam and Tiger. Too many Coincidences become fate/destiny? Will free will/free choice trump the string of fate? This deity seem to be doing a power trip playing with human and vulpine lives!

  22. Did the marble return to Fox? I did not see it like @Agdr03. But Fox said he took care of it. If it’s still with Dam, then she should be hurting being close and touched by Tiger.

  23. Joining everyone and jumping on the bandwagon regarding the coffee scene. LOL!!! I think I laughed aloud just a tiny little bit aloud when Hye Sun said JJ was heavy and her back hurt. Oh these two, so precious! lol.

I guess two of the main themes in today’s episode are communication (between Dam and Fox; between Hye Sun and JJ *snicker*) and free will.

As regards free will, I am also of view that the mountain god is placing Fox in scenarios so Fox will learn how to hone and assert his free will. Because having and exercising free will is part and parcel of being human.

  24. @Janey, let’s hope that the student dating a Professor won’t be the angst of the drama at the end. Yikes! They might as well know how old Professor Fox is. LOL!

  25. @Janey, that’s what Fox said that he took care of it. But yeah I did not see it transfer back to him. It’s only to Dam that the marble baby transfer so easily.

  26. What’s good in Fox and Dam’s relationship is that they talk to each other and try to be honest. Fox was honest to make Dam aware of the string but the deity stepped in. Those meddling “parents”

Hyesun and JJ scenes are a hoot! Misinterpreted idioms and conversation that are crossed-purposes add to the mayhem. Lesson for JJ – don’t drink too much! But He’s really a good guy who was bothered by what happened and will take responsibility. He is different from the guys that Hye Sun dated. The fake-dating is going to the right direction. More chit-chat and getting to know each other and they will fall in love…

Looks like we have another couple or ex- couple, a secret liaison of Dam’s fiend and her class standing competitor.

  27. @Agdr03, that teacher-student situation is my angst for sure. We do get a really nice kiss between the OTP but I can’t enjoy it since it’s even in the teacher’s office! What if a student comes in?

@pandamilktea – it’s a good thing they were showing flashbacks of what Hye Sun means like her “first time”… so many innuendos in this episode. 😂

  28. @Janey, I go back to this is a fantasy drama. But I get you and really anyone can just see them and for sure once it’s known to the campus, hell will break loose. Let’s really hope not.

  29. Hahaha, I say that too, @Agdr03. This is a fantasy drama… 😂

On the topic of free will – if I think about it, it’s not Fox whose will is being tested with the string of fate. It is Dam’s. This confused me a bit, I will rewatch what the deity said. I understand that animals are ruled by baser instinct and free will is a human trait. so maybe the challenge of free will for Fox is to love Dam fully and control his baser instincts?

  30. @BethB I agree! I think the red string of fate and the marble going to Dam repeatedly are two sides of the same coin. Both fated. Rather than this deity being wise (which is where I think this is headed) I would love it if he were just an a-hole that they outwit. Love HS and JJ and when the subs said “intercourse” I howled. And worth mentioning – that was quite the kiss between Dam and Fox. I appreciate this drama so much because it it so entertaining!!

  31. Good morning, Everyone. @FGB4877, sorry I had to leave the thread to sleep!

@Janey, I think that Dam will be the one who figures out the right thing to do. The deity scared her with his power for now, but she has continued to support Mr Fox as best that she can. I agree that the marble didn’t seem to return to her. Maybe this is Fox’s way of rebelling against that manufactured Fate. Another lady approached Fox, but he said, ‘later.’

Someone theorised early on that Sun Woo may be older than his year cohort because of being in the military, so he may not actually be a Tiger. He may be Ox or Rat.

🤔😉😂 I woke up thinking about JJ and HS and wondering what would have happened if JJ had suggested to chew the fat or chin wag instead of a chit-chat. I can’t wait for the tongue-wagging. -But all of those are English. I wonder what Korean idioms exist.

  32. After rewatching it, it feels that Fox has the marble baby back. It’s weird that we didn’t see it though.

The whole conversation of JJ and Hye-sun had the we did the deed, it was her first time because her back hurt, he did a good job and he’ll take full responsibility. 😂

  33. Hello everyone! I just finished watching this because I was watching monthly magazine home before.. (sorry oot is there anyone here watch that show?)

As usual I always love the interaction and conversation between JJ and HS. I think they are my new favorite couple of the show lol. I laughed so hard when the misunderstand happened. The coffee talk was hilarious 😂
And it’s good that they both starting to open their heart to each other. Hye Sun forget how it feels to love and to be loved, what a lonely woman she was actually, but she didn’t realize it yet. I wish that the existence of JJ could bring the warmth again to her heart.

Regarding the main couple.. I agree with @Janey, what I like about Mr Fox and Dam is their honesty to each other. Even if they’re trying to hide something it won’t be too long for them to talk and make it clear. I don’t know about the old man/mountain spirit/deity. I hope, he will be good like the girl deity in DAYS who appeared confusing in the earlier episodes. If I’m not mistaken The deity said that human has free will, and so Dam too. Besides the effort of Mr Fox to gather humans energy, I hope that Dam’s free will to always love Mr Fox would be key factors to the success of their relationship.

I was also worried and unsure whether the marble has come back to Mr Fox or not. Because if the marble is inside Dam’s body. She has to be careful around the tiger guys, not eating chicken and etc etc. it would be exhausting for Dam.. but as @agdr03 said that the marble has returned to Mr Fox, I’m so relieved..

Not much about the encounter of Dam’s brother and Sunbae’s sister. I didn’t see any potential relationship yet for them, instead their meeting is just a leverage for Dam and Tiger Sunbae relationship.. haha but let’s see the next episodes.

Oh and I’m starting to get curious about Dam’s friend (the smarty one).. what is her biggest secret and what happened between her and the Smartest Sunbae.. 🧐🧐🧐

  34. I love this drama so much!
The ordinary future for dam actually not bad, i love it. 🤣😍
Bcs both man and lee dam is deserve to be with loved.
Now, they added red thread between lee dam and sunwoo, making the story getting more interesting.
Like i love main couple mr gumiho & dam, but adding more sweetness doesnt hurt 😁

Paboo couple hyesun and jae jin looks so cute together, though they are disconnected when they are talking, failed to understand the meaning their conversation 🤣

  35. Dear @Fern, please do not be sorry for going to sleep!. One of the things that boggle my mind is that I am here, sitting in Caracas (which during summer corresponds rather nicely to US Eastern Time) and that all of our Friends here live so far apart that our time zones are very different 😉 .

@Janey, contrary of you I don’t mind a teacher-student relationship… as long as it is a respectful and sincere one (not tainted by power dynamics). It is like dating a co-worker or your boss. It can be troublesome if there is an abuse of power involved (and it can be both ways: not only the one with the higher position “blackmailing” the junior but also the junior looking for that power to wield that over others).

At the end of the day a sincere relationship requires time… lust is easy!!!. So the people you spend more time (and know better) are your best bets while looking for a long therm relationship. That is why even if frowned a lot of people will find love with co-workers, the boss will fall in love with his secretary, an eager student could end up with a professor. And along these lines I found that finding love with a cousin is not unusual.

    https://www.businessinsider.com/the-surprising-truth-about-cousins-and-marriage-2014-2

This one in Spanish is even less biased… but it is still in Spanish:

    https://magnet.xataka.com/en-diez-minutos/en-que-paises-del-mundo-es-mas-probable-que-termines-casandote-con-tu-primo

  36. @BethB, do you remember when Ms. Fox told Mr. Fox that there would be a day where being a Fox and not a human being would be unbearable?, that is where Mountain god is trying to head Mr. Fox to. He is using Mr. Fox’s love for Dam as “bait” for him to do his best to become human. He doesn’t want another Maegu.

In the Lotus Sutra a father calls his children out of a burning house by offering toys he doesn’t have. Of course he is lying but doing so to save them. Just as Mr. Fox is absorbed in his illusion that there will come another day (which has been happening for over 999 years!!!) and that time doesn’t matter, Mountain god must show him a very real possibility by making him kill a former Gumiho which has lost the boat (showing him the stick) while wielding the love of a good human girl as a carrot for him to hurry up in that last stretch.

Mountain god is a strict father who loves and worries for his children like any parent does. That is why another father-son rift is shown, the one with Tiger and his father because his excessive spending.

    https://www.age-of-the-sage.org/buddhism/parable_burning_house.html

  37. @GoodTwin, Mountain god is wise and a jerk at the same time XD . He is worried sick about Mr. Fox so he has resorted to hamfisted methods trying to save the day at the last minute. He didn’t have to interfere with Ms. Fox, because as much as her brother has made fun of her she has been working dilligently to become a human. She has arrived 300 years before her time is due. Mr. Fox is a special case.

And both Dam and Mr. Fox can “outwit” or more precisely avoid disaster by working harder. Dam by loving Mr. Fox more so that the manipulations of the Red String does not provide a crack for Tiger to enter her heart. Mr. Fox by doing his best to become human and get the girl (as Mountain god said, a human must be with another human, or by Mr. Fox’s own words, Dam should be with somneone more normal).

Of course they would not be “outwitting” Mountain god but heading to the best possible ending, that is at the end of the day what a parent wants their children to achieve 😉 .

  38. @FGB – I’m not against student-teacher relationship per se and your other examples. you can’t choose who you love. But they need to fix the situation since he is a direct teacher of Dam and can be subject to school policy, gossip and such. I have faith that it will soon be resolved.

I like your idea that the deity is doing tough love on Fox (and Dam). Sometimes we do not understand why our parents do/decide some things. This actually makes the drama more interesting to see how Dam and Fox will overcome this hurdle. And more airtime for Tiger.

Is ep12 up with subs now?

  39. Just finished ep12. I’m relieved Dam is not a direct student of Fox, I’m still confused why she attends his lectures but I’ll take it! She introduced Fox as her BF to Tiger. She is right that they met before he became a professor.

    Spoiler…

The couple has a new issue. is Fox cheating on Dam? He is rumored to be dating another teacher. She is the new marble carrier and this does not rest well with Dam that she breaks off their relationship. Is this the only way Fox can be human? Fox should have discussed this with Dam.

On the other hand, Hye-Jin couple is getting more solid. JJ admitted that he likes HyeSun while she admits he is too good for her. Aww… The fake dating is on the path to be true.

  40. @Janey,
Fox has to fill the marble with human energy, and I think that he use the other professor on this. True that Mr Fox should have been discussed this with Dam. That’s why Dam is angry because it could harm the other professor and it is happened while Mr Fox want to protect Dam. I think we need to see this phase of their relationship where the misunderstandings happens, I hope that they could solve their problem (based on the preview of next episode, I think they would reconcile)..

If I remember correctly, Dam doesn’t know that Mr Fox has a limited time to gather the human energy, he is actually in a critical situation because his 1000 years is almost reach its end. I believe that if Dam knows this, she would do everything to help Mr Fox.
Let’s see for the next episode..

Yes, on JJ and Hyesun getting more solid.
Hyesun is really meant that JJ is too good for her. And it makes JJ blushed. Kiyoptaa..
I think at this point JJ has realized his true feeling towards Hyesun but Hyesun still no clue about her own feeling. Wish to see a great progress next week..

  41. I’ve never understood SML syndrome (especially during Start Up and all the Good Boy worship) but now I think I’ve got it with this drama. The SML is: kind, attentive, already love with the FL, easy on the eyes, rich (not that I usually care about that, but Dam is pretty much on her own) and, most importantly, isn’t an animal that could devour the FL. He really would be a good choice for the FL, and she’s seen her potential happy future with him.

He should be even more alluring now that the inevitable Episode 12 breakup has happened and Mr. Fox has “cheated” on Dam.

So what would bring her back to Mr. Fox? I’m hoping she doesn’t run back to him right away but takes some time to herself. Still, the clock is ticking for Mr. Fox.

But I’m wondering when or if they are going to go back to the serial murder plot. Perhaps Dam will step forward and be Mr. Fox’s alibi. Maybe that’s why she was running to help him in the preview. (If they never go back to that murder sub-plot even for a few minutes to clear it up I’m going to be confused and slightly peeved).

BTW the SML was in a short show called “Kiss Goblin,” which I confess I watched when I was looking for something quick to watch during the lockdown. Like Mr. Fox, he had to gather energy from women by kissing them (though without a marble passing). Even though he likes the FL he still has to pursue other women in this way. What happened in the end of that drama may be a bit of a foreshadowing of what will happen with this one [I won’t give it away here]. I don’t know if this actor was chosen for the SML (in part) because of this or if it was coincidental and based entirely on his looks and merits.

  42. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I’ve finally watched Episode 11 and 12. I feel it’s good that Dam gets to see Fox in a less celestial light. In the end it is not the external interference that they have to weather, as much as situation within, especially within our Fox.

So the lady professor is now the person who is providing him with human energy, by lots of hand-holding? Well, as long as she’s not a marble bearer, it’s not too bad, but I understand Dam’s repugnance at Fox’s harming another person, while keeping her safe. I still feel that Fox has become overly cautious. With Dam’s permission, he could still have gotten her help to turn the marble blue and ensure that she was not harmed.

I continue to find JJ and Hye Sun rather lovable together. Their Ep 15 conversation without mentioning the subject of their night together was by far the most memorable I’ve seen of a misunderstanding which sounded so plausible. Poor JJ. He thought he did good, when all he was, was drunk and they got a C grade. LOL.

And the Hye Sun misunderstanding scene with Soo Kyung was a real first for me LOL. Again, the Korean way of speaking where pronouns are dropped had everything to do with where Hye Sun thought her hands had to go. And the way our JJ scampered out of that situation had me laughing so hard. Now that’s a scene I want to watch the BTS of.

  43. Had a blast with the Kimchi making scene XD . It worries me that he is an awful cooker. On the other hand please raise your hand only if you have never told your significant other a white lie to avoid disaster XD . Poor Fox has a crash course in dating and being human with Dam.

  44. @bethb – I just searched Kiss Goblin! He gives free kisses there, he gives free hugs here. Such a generous man, hah!

I do not have SML syndrome but Im kinda getting tired of seeing the same expression on Fox’s face (although he is really good looking, both men are). Tiger is showing more acting chops than Fox. I feel sorry for him and I feel his confusion because he wanted to stop pestering Dam but cannot escape the pull of string of fate.

@GB and @moonstar – I just assumed the lady prof has the marble but we did not really see that happened. He is getting energy by holding hands with her. Such an intimate act though. He should be the one giving free hugs (to get energy), I bet a lot of students will line up and donate. Hahaha!

  45. I’m finally on this thread! Trying to juggle watching and commenting on 4-5 Kdramas at once is not easy for me. At least by now I’ve finished Sell Your Haunted House and Doom at Your Service, so my ongoing watch/comment list is down to MRIAG, HP2, and Healer. I’m making headway because I’m no longer traveling, but my hubby is, so I’ve got the house to myself and don’t have to feel guilty about maintaining an indulgent schedule.

There were many moments in episodes 11 & 12 of MRIAG that made me smile or laugh. The verbal misunderstandings between JJ and Hye Sun were a hoot, especially since JJ is such a prude and we know Ms. Fox thought the porn (?) movie they saw on their double date was mild. The pulsing red light on the faces of Fox and Dam, along with the suggestive music, was also funny, especially with Fox asking about the source of the music. The kimchi scene was funny on a lot of levels: brother wanting to do something nice for Dam, but saddling her with all the work; Fox in a ruffled apron and pink gloves (at least he didn’t also end up wearing the flowered work pants Se Hee wore while making kimchi with Ji Ho’s family in Because This Is My First Life); Fox crying while peeling onions and grinding garlic; Dam making Fox do his work again because he hadn’t done it to her standards (his abilities in many other things being higher than hers).

By this time in the drama, I’m getting tired of:
    – bff Soo Kyeong constantly reminding everyone of her academic standing
    – Dam tripping

I also felt disappointed as these two episodes unfolded that Dam and Fox started skirting the truth, which has been a hallmark of their relationship. I understand that when jealousy reared its ugly head, and both admitted to feeling it and being uncomfortable with it, they wanted to spare each other…but still, this has become a hurdle in their communication that needs to be overcome, not avoided or ignored.

Because Dam and Fox were in a relatively healthy relationship prior to his joining the staff of her university, I’m not that uncomfortable with their continuing their professor-student romance. I’m glad Dam clarified she’s no longer his student. (I assume because the term where he taught her class ended.) But I do agree it is sketchy for the two of them to be engaging in physical affection on campus, especially in his office.

I wonder what would happen to the marble if Dam told Fox she loved him. She has not yet done that. We can see that they have feelings of love toward each other, but maybe their love needs to be verbalized for the magic to happen.

I went back to episode 1 to refresh myself on the rules a gumiho must follow to become human:
    – Once you live a hundred years with good virtue, you’ll grow a tail.
    – If you cultivate yourself and live 200 years, two tails.
    – If you come to an understanding and live 300 years, three tails.
    – Then you will make yourself a Red Marble.
    – If you manage to color that Marble blue with human energy before 1,000 years is up, before you grow more than 9 tails, you, a beast, may become a human.

By these rules, a gumiho only has 700 years to turn the marble from red to blue, since the red marble is created after 300 years. Shin Woo Yeo’s progress toward becoming human stalled because he stopped investing in relationships with humans, only doing the minimum to get by. He lived in the world of humans for almost 900 years, but kept himself aloof from them and their ways. It is telling that he knows little about what constitutes good food for humans by the time he met Dam. When we first see him in episode 1, he’s sitting at a table with an impressive spread of food. He appears to have given up on sharing meals with humans. The French chef Éric Ripert has said, “Cooking is a holistic process of planning, preparing, dining and sharing food. I place food at the center of our humanity, as it nourishes not only our physical bodies but also our emotional and spiritual lives. Food is truly a cultural phenomenon that informs our traditions and our relationship with the earth. I genuinely believe that food connects us all.”

  46. I’m watching MRIAG on Viki (UK), and episodes are being released 5-7 days after everyone else here gets to see them. 🤨 Anyway, episode 12 was finally made available last night, so I’m now caught up with y’all.

Student-teacher relationship: my best friend started dating the professor of one our classes in college, and I strongly objected – why couldn’t they keep a platonic friendship until the end of the semester, when he no longer was marking her papers and handing out grades? Thirty years later, I still feel this way, although logically speaking, if mutual attraction develops between the student and teacher, doesn’t that already influence the teacher’s judgment of the student’s performance? I’m just relieved that Dam said she was no longer taking Mr Fox’s class in episode 12. I guess she’s only attending his lectures because she like them/him?

@BethB this is the first series where I’ve struggled with SML syndrome. (Like you, I never understood the controversy with Start Up, as the ML was head-and-shoulders better than the SML both in looks and character.) I did pick up some lingering narcissism in Tiger Sunbae a few episodes ago, so maybe that will re-emerge and cure my SML syndrome….

@Janey – I think part of the my SML syndrome is what you noted: Mr Fox mostly has an expressionless face. But I think this is good acting – Mr Fox, as an animal, does not have human emotions, so his face should not show a range of expressions like SML Tiger. I would expect to see Mr Fox’s facial expressions to change considerable, though, if he ever becomes human.

@moonstar512 – I think you identified the key issue with Fox not being honest with Dam (about getting energy from the female Prof): he his hiding the fact that he’s dying (or has only a short time to live as a Fox). This makes the issue more profound – reminds me of the character Alceste in Moliere’s play ‘The Misanthrope’. Is honesty always best? Even if it hurts the other person? Or makes them anxious? I recently had a health scare and didn’t tell my mother until I had the all-clear. Was I being dishonest with my mother? Yes. I was ‘dishonest’ by with-holding information (like Mr Fox) because I wanted someone I cared about not to feel anxious.

  47. @PM3 – can we have thread for ep13 and 14 please? Thank you!!!

@Rebecca – I feel the same as you on student-teacher relationship and also relief that Fox is not Dam’s teacher. I have a feeling they changed the narrative mid-way though to probably appease this angst from viewers. When Dan introduced Fox as her boyfriend to Tiger, Tiger said he was in his class (interpreting she is not in his class) and asked how she knew him – huh? They were seated together in 1 lecture when Fox stopped/froze the moment except for him and Dam. Will have to rewatch those scenes.

On Fox’s acting – yes, I’m giving him leeway since he is not human but animals are not that stoic either. I am looking for something more to tug at my gut.

  48. I just remembered that Packmule3 wrote on the theme of lying in Start-Up. She gave us two ways of looking at lying from a behavioural perspective: prosocial lie (white lie) vs antisocial lie (black lie) and honesty vs kindness. See her post here:

    https://bitchesoverdramas.com/2020/11/07/start-up-ep-6-on-lying-part-1/

So I think Mr Fox’s dishonesty about getting energy from the female prof was a ‘prosocial’ and ‘kind’ type of ‘lie’ as he does not want to hurt Dam and tell her that he’s dying (hence his need for more energy if he’s to transition to a human).

As others have pointed out, however, I generally think the way Mr Fox and Dam are able to communicate and avoid misunderstandings is about the best I’ve ever seen in the formative stages of an OTP.

  49. Annyeong,

I agree with @FGB4877, the kimchi making event was hilarious. i love it so much… next to the ice room scene. omg i love mr Fox acting and facial expression here. making kimchi is a team effort and i love that they show how much hard work it is. i think that’s why they’re so expensive when they sell them in the store. it’s like making tamales. the process is tedious but fun for bonding time. it’s funny that mr Fox took this opportunity to be with Dam. and Dam is so funny when she was trying to feed kimchi to mr Fox and she wasn’t getting the right reaction from him. guess Dam likes to do a lot of do-overs. that’s so cool. like, yes, let me re-start that. she actually leaves and makes another entrance haha. oh man, mr fox face. he’s so lovely.

@janey regarding fox acting/stoicism, it’s a process and i think he’s learning. i love his face when he’s watching Dam devour that chicken leg. omg. it was so sexy it awakened his libido hahaha… i don’t think he’s ever kissed someone with so much passion before. so as Dam was all giggly about her first kiss, for mr fox it was mixed with fear because it became a hunger and he could have devoured her if Dam didn’t tap his chest LOL. ahhh so hot!
