Lovers of the Red Sky: Eps 15 & 16 Open Thread

Get ready for the series ending.

Will the finale for our couple be happy, sad, or open-ended?

I came for the romance, but I stayed for the mystery.

That’s one thing I liked about this drama: the writer has yet to reveal his hand. I still don’t know how he’s ending because a new twist is thrown in every episode and the episode stops in a cliffhanger.

I’m not unlike the King in “One Thousand and One Nights” who spares Scheherazade night after night because he wants her to continue telling the story. I want to drop the show but I keep watching because I’m curious to know the ending.

For me, an open-ending is when they end up alive but apart from each other after the sealing to protect the other person. A separation will explain all these non-stop, endless voiceovers. These narrations will indicate that they’re reflecting on the past and confessing to the other person what their thoughts were at that time.

For instance, she says, “HaRam, If I can, as long as I am alive, I will fight Mawang. I will seal that terrible Mawang in the royal portrait that I paint. I never said it in words, but I love you, Haram.”

And he answers thus, “If I can protect you by keeping you far from me, I will push you away a thousand, even a million times. I am sorry, Maiden.”

They’re lovers of the red sky because they’re forever under the same sky, but never under the same roof.  They don’t end up like the “legend” mentioned in the beginning of the drama. But they’re apart.

Of course, the best scenario of course is a happy ending.

Let’s enjoy the show!

  1. Kalimera!

Thank you @Packmule3 for this thread! Let us enjoy the last two episodes and hopefully all our questions will be answered! I believe that the ending will be open. We shall see…

  2. I have already posted it on the OST Thread, but please let us enjoy this gem here as well… The lyrics are WTH!

Cho Cheong Gyu – Rabbit and Liver

  3. Would it be an open ended ending or is Ha Ram gonna die in the final episode. The preview doesn’t look like it will be a happy ending.

  4. Kalispera,

I just finished watching Episode 15. In the beginning I was pessimistic, but I think there might be a window for Haram-ah and uri Cheon Gi to have a happy ending and / or an open ending that is good for them.

    SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!

First of all, all loose ends are closing.

As @Packmule3 has posted her thoughts before, the King knew it all from the very beginning, but didn’t say anything to Haram. The realization hit Haram hard. He was blaming himself for the demish of his father of course.

Hwatcha made a deal with Cheon Gi. He is not the one who steals lives or make people mad, he said. He goes after the painting. Let us see if that is the case.

The old man in that cell is…HaRam’s grandfather who came to give him an Oracle / advice. This Oracle made me a bit optimistic about their ending.

The courtesan abandoned HaRam and went with the 2nd Prince.

And last but not least, we had a today a lovely scene with our two lovebirds under the red sky! :-p

    That’s all for now!

  5. WE GOT A HEA!

  6. Viki finally uploaded the new video of Ep 16 with the blue screen blooper removed and the CGI of butterfly and Mawang being pushed inside the painting, added.

Too funny! The production team most likely gave IQIYI/Rakuten/Viki the wrong video. They always give it early because Viki subbers needed to have the episodes already subbed by the time the episode is released and televised in SK.

  7. @packmule3 Kalimera!

I watched the “correct” episode, I read later what happened…

  8. Awww give me a complete happy family with baby/babies anytime and I’ll be happy. ☺️

    I’ll comment more tomorrow. 😴

  9. Annyeong,

I LOVE the happy ending for our OTP… it’s like a fairy tale happily ever after ending 💖 so sweet… complete with a little adorable boy. and CG has her eyesight restored, as well. what a beautiful family. HaRam is like the perfect husband😍 and the way they called each other husband and wife. awwww.

i feel like we have come full circle… ending on the day of their birth. instead now, they are together as a family. ending on the same adventure they first had as children #flashback… at the Peach orchard 🍑 – fulfilling his promise. never too late to keep your promises 💕 that lady guarding the orchard is still there? after all these years? hilarious. want me some of that though… a kiss and a peach 😘

we have Prince3 and Painting Academy family come to celebrate our OTP’s birthday… they traveled far to celebrate our OTP. HaRam received a Promotion from the King… still alive. the bad goons are lost and hopefully will never find CG and family. the open-ending is left for the 2 princes having a sword fight. i don’t mind it. HaRam’s star reading looks positive for our good prince2.

great show! yay to our Lovers of the Red Sky.

  10. Howdy! 🙂

I thought it was great acting by KYJ especially the scene after Mawang took his eyes back. I thought she couldn’t possibly be pouring her tears on the painting is she? hahahah But seriously, I felt her fear because how does she finish it without seeing? I liked the scene when her father helped her finish it off and she’s able to let him go. She really acted blind way more than AYS.

I especially like the fantasy bits in this drama, I mean the first sealing ritual was tops. This is my happy ending for any drama, a complete family. 🙂

Just like that, another drama is finish.

  11. lol! Same here, @agdr03! When she was crying while painting, I was worried that she would ruin the paint.

I’m writing my last post on LotRS. Hang in there.

  12. 🙌🏻 😁

Our tiger spirit did a great job too. I like the young actress, Jo Ye-rin . ☺️

  13. @agdr03, add me to the list of viewers who worried about tearstains on the precious painting. Perhaps they increased its divinity!

I believe a point this drama makes is that it takes one to destroy, but it takes many, cooperating, to stop the destroyer: different abilities and efforts add up to check evil. Another lesson is that evil may be contained for a time, but it is not eliminated: Ma Wang was sealed, but not destroyed. Evil is also able to spread and grow like an infection; the scarring and decay on Prince2’s torso was a good visualization of his rotting character.

I’m glad Hwacha turned out to be kinda sorta good. Hwacha was clearly motivated by self interest, but at least he wasn’t working at cross purposes with the efforts to seal Ma Wang; his advice gave the final push to the sealing ritual preparations, and his presence made it possible for CheongKi to complete her task. His assurance that he doesn’t steal lives confused me a bit. What happened to “the erstwhile divine painter” Gan Yun Guk? We saw him disappear at the first ritual sealing Ma Wang, but he must’ve once been human in order to father painter Sim Dae Yu (Straw Hat). This drama didn’t make clear whether or not Hwacha inhabiting Master Painter Gan Yun Guk’s body amounted to the death of Gan Yun Guk, the human. Whatever the reason, either human who became goblin, or human who was uncaring, Gan Yun Guk’s son was abandoned at a Buddhist temple and raised without parents, poor child. It does seem Hwacha/Gan Yun Guk made an effort to remain in his son’s life, coming to Sim Dae Yu as Hwacha and challenging him to painting duels in order to help his son tap into his full potential as a painter.

I can understand why I, and many others, believed it was Hwacha’s influence that led to Painter Hong Eun Oh’s madness; but you are right, @Packmule3, he was still sane when he tumbled out of the room where he’d been painting, saw Ma Wang, then was cursed by Ma Wang.

I agree with @Packmule3 that Sam Shin binding herself with Ma Wang to assure Ma Wang was sealed in the royal portrait does not mean Sam Shin was gone forever. I do think that twist brought the origin legend full circle, bringing Ma Wang back into the god from whom he’d split. Another thing your are right about, @Packmule3: this drama’s plot wasn’t predictable, and kept us guessing until the end. Kudos to the writer of the source material and the screenwriter!

I was mildly annoyed by the stylistic choice to have the screen momentarily go black a few times after Ma Wang was sealed into the royal portrait. I suppose it was for us to experience something similar to Ha Ram’s restoration of sight, blinking and catching glimpses, trying to piece together what we’re seeing. In my opinion, it was distracting, like breaking the fourth wall.

I like that the first thing Ha Ram saw when his sight came back was the starry sky. His career had been spent at Seomungwan, interpreting the stars, without being able to see them. Looking at the stars and the Big Dipper was also a precious childhood memory Ha Ram shared with Cheong Ki. I am reminded of how the first thing Cheong Ki saw when opening her MaWang-enhanced eyes was rain, a connection to Ha Ram and the Ha family’s power of water. Cheong Ki will also be connected to the power of water as the mother of the next Ha generation.

When we see Yul getting on a boat to visit Ha Ram and Cheong Ki on their birthdays, I immediately recognized the filming site from Mr. Sunshine. Because of that connection with Mr. Sunshine, I couldn’t help but feel apprehension when I saw the familiar landing and river settings. My fears deepened when I saw the gone-wrong Wolseongdang trio shadowing Yul. I’m glad I worried for nothing. But thank you, @Packmule3, for pointing out that Cheong Ki, Ha Ram, and their growing family are protected by the heavens, hidden from their enemies by divinely sent mists. I had just thought the baddies were inept.

Speaking of baddies: Yang Hyun Min, the actor who plays the chief Wolseongdang baddie, does a fine turn as General Kim Shin’s lieutenant in Goblin. Which reminds me that I need to go to bed so I can be awake by 5:30am, which is only seven hours from now. Good night, all!
