Red Sleeve: Eps 1 & 2 Open Thread

The thread is now open for romance.

I think the better title here is “Her Sleeves’ Red Cuffs” — like “The Girl with a Pearl Earring.”

Apparently, her red cuffs denote her rank and job title in the palace.

Let’s enjoy the show!

  1. Kalimera!

I am waiting for this! Let us see, how are supposed to watch almost the same day(s):
Jirisan, Happiness and The Red Sleeve… LMAO!

  2. O my goodness. I went to read up about Prince Sado (father of YiSan (JunHo)) and it makes for gory reading. 😬 To have forced to die a slow death in a rice chest is horrible. But I guess he “deserved” it? He sounded like a brute of a man.

DeokIm is delightful. She’s a story teller. Intelligent and quick witted. Love her to bits.
YiSan’s bestie? DeokRo? Character failing at an early age. Keeping an eye on him. 😒

Ep1 was a treat. Loved how they weaved the background (context) stories into their lives like a running reel. It’s fascinating. Palace life as a Royal offspring is fraught with danger/threat of death. Survival of the fittest (and smartest) by default. Even as a Crown Prince 😬.

  3. I really enjoyed the first episode. Reminded me of Jewel in the Palace my first Korean sageuk.

  4. 😂😂😂 just watched the beginning of Ep2 (had to stop because I am off to church) and let’s just say that last scene where he caught her and their eyes met? Was that a dream sequence? Because we are shown the reality in Ep2… she tumbled into him, he did attempt to catch her but there was no time stopping moment where they romantically gazed into each other’s eyes? The momentum of her barreling down that slope carried him with her into the pond. And she never did get a good look at his face?

This might change as I watch more.

  5. Red Sleeve Ep 2 is funny — unexpectedly so.

And I like this comedy better in this drama than in Ok Taecyeon’s kdrama, “Secret Inspector Joy.”

    Acting wise:
    Junho > Taecyeon

    Script, as of Ep 2
Red Sleeves > Secret Inspector Joy

But I think the female lead in Red Sleeves contorts her face too much in Ep 2. I hope she tones it down. Aegyo doesn’t look good on her as in does with Kim HyeYoon.

  6. @packmule3 I like this drama better than the one with Taecyeon. And yes to bring surprised by the humorous take (so far) on certain events (like when he once again caught her from falling off the library ladder and then shoved her back upright causing her to face plant against the books 😂). I got a bit annoyed with the CP for making her write so many letter of apologies. 😂. His bestie (the one that took credit for DI’s intelligent move to rip the page out of the banned book) is a smooth talker. No wonder the court ladies are lining up to get on his good side 😂. But I agree, JunHo has stage presence. I have only watched him in Just Between Lovers and it took me a while to warm up to his character there. But once I did, I liked him. Not sure how reading a book is going to help with the tiger capture next week but okay. 😂

  7. Hello ladies!

I really enjoyed the first two episodes!

The Crown Prince is being deliberately a jerk to the junior court lady.
He likes her though. The line where he said : “She got crazy” while she was crying and kinda laughing was pretty good.

I enjoyed everything so far and I am waiting to see how they will catch the tiger!

I will read your comments and then I will write some more!

  8. I just watched the first two episodes.
I really enjoyed how they took their time in the first episode with the young actors (much like red sky) instead of a quick prologue or relying heavily on flashbacks. It makes the trope “met as kids then as adults” feel less trope-y.
Ive always liked the actor Junho and watching this reminds me why. He has such natural charisma and is handsome without being blandly so and also not too pretty.
Unfortunately, I’m just not enjoying this female lead. It’s her lips/smile. Hopefully, she’ll grow on me and at least it’s only the actress that bothers me and not the character— I’m actually really enjoying Doek Im. She feels spunky in a realistic way for the time.
The side characters in this seem fine, but I feel like Bossam may have done it better though only 2 episodes in so there’s still time.
I’m intrigued by the tiger. I don’t know if I’ve watched a saeguk with an animal threat (that’s not fantasy) and it feels refreshing.
His right-hand man doek ro—-I’ll never forgive him. Even if it turns out he’s going to take crown prince’s side instead of the king’s if it means life or death for him, I can’t get over his character flaw of hijacking credit for someone else’s smart move.

  9. I am watching King’s affection and Red Sleeves these days.

King’s affection is alright, but I found that it is a little too much for me since the male lead still could not recognize that the Crown Prince is his first love after 10 episodes broadcasting!! Can’t believe it!

But, I enjoyed the first 2 episodes of Red Sleeves very much. I was expecting a romantic tragic story, but turned out funny.

@nrllee thanks for the link of Prince Sado. Can’t believe this brutal thing happened. Weirdly, the King feels insulted if people talk about his mother as a maid but is fine with filicide.

  10. @Kuroshio

Weirdly, the King feels insulted if people talk about his mother as a maid but is fine with filicide.

YeahI thought it was odd too but I think it had to do with Prince Sado being cruel and crazy. They couldn’t kill him so the King opted to just starve him to death 😬. They could report that he died of “natural causes” and not by beheading or having a sword thrust in him. It would’ve been a slow death. More likely he died of dehydration/thirst? You can survive for quite a while without food but water is another thing. It still makes it gruesome though.

  11. I think maybe he didn’t like them calling his mother a maid because it reflected badly on him and his lineage

  12. Too many Sageuk dramas these days. I am watching all 3 King’s affection, Secret Inspector and Red Sleeve. I am totally loving Red Sleeve and yes I have to say Junho commands a kind of presence but I am terrible at recognising them when they have their hair all tied up. (Don’t start on the older generation ministers in Sageuk dramas, I got so confused as to who is who in King’s affection because they looked so similar plus they wear uniforms!)
I thought Junho looked a bit like JuJiHoon the ML in Jirisan.

The original story of King Jeongjo and family is complicated and tragic, especially wrt his on father whom he was filial to. The tragic part of the story is also that Royal consort in the history books passed away at 33yrs due to cancer, and while she was pregnant with her 3rd child. Her 2 children she bore also died young.

  13. @nrllee

Yes, I thought about natural causes, too. But surely there must be a decent way to stop him from doing crazy things, like putting him under house arrest or an Iron Mask, etc. Prince Sado may be crazy, but his father who decided to starve his son to death was not in his right mind, either.

Now I am very interested in watching “Secret door” in which Lee Je-hoon played Prince Sado.

  14. @Kuroshio Tame compared to China’s Empress Wu ZeTian. She was horrible. 😬.

Hi All, I finally watched Episode 1. Ah the sight of Jun Ho was great. As is usually the case, the child actors are lovely to watch.

A question that popped up for me was, why did the king not simply destroy that book since it bothered him so much, or like what was done … tear out the offending page. It would have solved the problem of catching the prince reading it and having to punish him (since it was evident that the king did not want to punish the grandson).

    Time to watch Episode 2!

  16. @nrllee Thanks for the tip!

  17. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@pkml3 Red Sleeve will also be airing tonight. Please open a thread for Ep 3 and 4.

    🍪 🥛 🍪 🥛 🍪 🥛 🍪 🥛 🍪 🥛

  18. Kalimera!

    Brand new Music Video!

    Whee In – I wish

  19. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks @Cleo! I’m watching Ep 2 now and am laughing my head off.

We have more than one meet-cute as adults, and when she discovers his real identity, it will be like yet another one as well. Pretty good benefits from just 2 episodes. 🙂

  20. @GB Unnie,

I laughed hard with Episode 2. When she will find out, I do hope she will kick him 😛

The bad thing is that my elbow is swollen and I might not be able to participate in tomorrows Rewatch Party… 🙁

  21. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Oh dear @Cleo!! Did you fall and hurt your elbow? Is it painful?

I hope you will heal well and soon. 🙁
