Bulgasal: Eps 9 & 10 Open Thread

The thread is now open for all the mayhem the director and writer want to throw at us….

Including fashion.

I don’t know what costume coordi’s “concept” is when she dresses up the actress Kwon Nara.

From Episode 2.

I supposed Kwon Nara must blend with the corn stalk because her character SangUn was on the run from Bulgasal. But it’s bad composition when red shopping cart is brighter than the central character.

Later that day, SangUn wore another drab checkered shirt, paired with, tshirt, mini-dress, and jeans.

Here’s the view from the top.

Episode 3.

She looked like a hobo. The coordi must have missed the memo that the character wanted to disappear in the crowd because nothing screams “FUGITIVE!” like a black cap, black jacket, floral dress worn over jeans.

She might as well have dressed up with a bullseye on her back.

Without the jacket, here’s how the dress looked like. From the back…

and from the front.

The dress is bipolar. It doesn’t know if it’s floral or geometric.

Episode 4. Here she was again with another jacket, and another floral-dress-over-jeans ensemble.

Up-close.

Do you get the motif now? She wore floral most days to project a fresh, innocent image.

Episode 5. She looked normal here.

And here. She wore a jacket on top of the shirt and jeans.

But in Episode 6, the character was back to being a fashion terrorist.

Any which way I looked at this, whether near or far, eyes squinting or eyes crossed, the camouflage shirt simply didn’t match the blazer with lime-green florals.

Unfortunately for me, this eyesore lasted till Episode 7.

Episode 8. I don’t know if the coordinator was trying to be avant-garde but her outfit in this episode was a failure.

Holes on the back.

Hem was too long, she was in danger of tripping.

And there’s an apron sewn in front.

It was an apron-shirt-pants sewn together! Groundbreaking!

Seriously, I don’t get why a character who was trying to look like the girl-next-door had to wear trailer-trash clothes. The coordi should be demoted.

That night, SangUn fled the house in a blue hoodie. She gave me the Little Red Blue Riding Hood vibes out to see her Granny in the senior retirement home.

I was going to rejoice because she was finally wearing normal clothes. But then, I saw the clothes in full-length, and so ended up groaning instead.

What’s with the asymmetrical jacket and dress?

And that’s how she was dressed at the end of Ep 8. I can’t wait to see her charming new outfit in Episode 9.

LOL @pkml3. I find the Shaman lady and Si Ho look better dressed than Sang Un. Poor Kwon Nara.

  2. Oh I saw Episode 9 and I like it. It gave us more information on what happened in the past.

Dark Hole is a mess. He is totally wicked!

    I will wrote more tomorrow.

  3. The only thing I can say is: Do Hyun is indeed the reincarnation of A-Chan…

  4. 😂😂 Glad to know we were on the right track.

I pointed out that the way he stuck his hand out — while holding the knife to stab Hwal — looked like he was blind. Achan did the same thing in the forest. His arms were outstretched like he was feeling his way in front of him. Also, the screenshot I took had red (blood?) circling his one pupil. That was weird CGI. Lol.

    Let me watch it now.

  5. There’s so many of OTP’s love is in the air scenes that I have to ffwd all of them *palm face* Her scripts, his scripts… aigooo

So the General was OET’s father 1000 years ago. The bond is intact and on repeat. I am curious to see who Siho was 1000 years back before she became Hwal’s wife. OET was born with an illness which is why his father chose his healthy brother. Red bulgasal was a bulgasal in origin. How did OET become a bulgasal? Which bulgasal did he kill before becoming one? Hwal before he was reincarnated as a cursed baby? I remember little Hwal has scars on his face, not sure if it was from the soreness of wearing the cloth mask to protect his face from the cold weather, or something that relate to OET when he was human. This looks like a doom love story since someone has to die for OET to die. And that someone is SW. Just like 600 years ago, only she can inflict pain to OET.

  6. After Episode 10, I feel like I am watching pure nonsense, but I can’t stop looking! These are the main things that are bothering me:

At the end of EP 9 they were all bugging out to escape from Dark Hole, but at the beginning of EP 10 Hwal just leaves everyone behind in the house?

Is that Hwal’s black jacket with green leaves on it that Dark Hole picks up from the chair? So, Hwal, Dark Hole and Sang Un all have one? I guess they shop in the same places.

Hwal walks away from the car accident, but Dark Hole is thrown some distance away. Did he crash through the windshield? Wouldn’t he have impacted on the building instead of ending up on the side of the road?

I thought Hwal had to kill Dark Hole so that he can achieve his desire to kill Sang Un to get his soul back and have revenge for his family’s deaths. Isn’t that important anymore? He has had plenty of chances to kill him so far.

How can monsters who were killed in ancient times be reincarnated as humans? Do they have souls when they are reincarnated as humans? From the casual way our characters murder them in current times, this doesn’t seem to be the case. But you need a soul to be reincarnated, right?

This writer makes way too much use of narrative exposition. Sometimes I think I am going to die of boredom from all these talking scenes.

What is the importance of the browish/golden lighting with blurring in some scenes?

Where the heck is this story going from here? Why am I still watching (LOL)??

  7. 😂😂 This drama is a mess, @Jane_M. (Welcome back!)

I don’t know about you but I’m watching this because I want to see what SangUn’s real story with Hwal.
Once I figure that out, I’m outta here faster than a cheetah.

The monsters have a soul. According to the drama-universe, they have a soul. That’s they told Hwal back in the Joseon era that they were going to remember his soul in their next lives and take revenge for his killing them. Remember? And when they’re reincarnated as humans, they still have a soul. However, because they’re born as humans, they now have a choice to either continue behaving like the monsters they once were or turn into a new leaf, and live like a human.

The serial killers CHOSE to become like monsters that they once were.

You can say that the message of the writer is we’re fated to repeat the past when we don’t learn anything from the past mistakes.

Monsters, when given opportunity to live humanely as humans, chose to do monstrous deeds.

That’s why Hwal’s foster father, General Dan, made him promise to live like a human, not a Bulgasal. He was appealing to him to remember that he was once human so he shouldn’t eat his fellow human beings. If he succumbs to his beast/monster/Bulgasal inside of him, then he truly loses his humanity and become evil.

    Only a Bulgasal doesn’t have a soul.

I’ll watch Ep 12 later. I’m working on Our Beloved Summer first.

  8. So glad I am wrong about Min Siho’s possible boyfriend!
Looking at the “next on episode 11” scenes, we’ll be connecting with the opening sequence of episode 1, where Hwal is fighting with a monster, falls into the water, drifts down to the river bank, and comes back to the bridge to meet up with MSU.

  9. I just watched Episode 12.

    SPOILERS

    ….

We got intel tonight that Dark Hole indeed killed Hwal’s wife and son.
He was dressed in the exact way as the Red Lady and he even had long long hair. So, Dark Hole was doing the killings in Hwal’s village and she was taking the blame. That means he has a fascination with her.

As it seems, all started 1.000 years ago. Dark Hole killed his own brother because he was jealous of him. His father was Detective Kwon at the time. Hwal and Dark Hole shared the same father in different reincarnations. I didn’t have a close look when they showed us the scenes, but I wonder how Dark Hole’s younger brother looked like.

Also, 1000 years ago, we know that witness in the crime scene was the Lady in Red, plus another man in blue we haven’t seen yet his face.
Dark Hole was the one who said to his father that Bulgasal killed his brother, when he was the culprit.

    Present Day
Dark Hole stabbed Do-Yun because Deoksini told the kiddo, that Dark Hole killed him and his mom in his previous life aka 600 years ago.

Dark Hole is a complex character. He is not just “I am an evil persona”.
I also believe that he has a mental condition. He says he cares about someone, gets emotional and cries in front of others to convince them, but kills nonetheless.

What I liked in this episode was the scene where Si-Ho had a sudden pain in her abdomen, when the Dark Hole stabbed Do-Yun.

In Episode’s 11 preview we are going to find out the Red Lady’s story.
Since Si-Ho will touch her sister’s hand. Let us see how that it will go…

P.S. Since everyone enters the reincarnation cycle, that means the monsters had a soul, hence they are repeating their vicious instincts. I agree with @Packmule3 on that.

I also like that the underlying message. It is your CHOICE what you will become in life. You can have the instincts to kill, but you can chose to stay human, like Hwal did when he promised to his Father that he will stay human, that he won’t drink human blood.

  10. @Packmule3,

I think that when you are hit in your face, your eye can get red inside the white that means a vein is broken. I know that if you have eye pressure it can happen with no beating.

I have to recheck the scene to remember it better though. 🙂

  11. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    Thanks @pkml3, @Cleo, @Jane M. @miracle
I get the drift from reading your views and am spared the drudgery of watching. So the exposition continues, huh? New stuff keeps coming to light and the present day characters are all linked to each other somehow in previous reincarnations. It sounds like a complicated mess of you’re my or my enemy’s ‘father-brother-son-uncle/mother-wife-sister in the past and I have to kill you, while I make it look like another monster did it’ kind of thing. 😉

  12. Kalimera @GB Unnie!

The story that unfolds tells us the following:

1.000 years ago, Detective Kwon was the Lord of a specific land.
Dark Hole was his first born from his first wife, but he was weakly.
The Lord had a second son from his second wife, who was admired by his father for everything he did. Dark Hole found about that.

Eventually, Dark Hole who was envious of his little brother, killed him. The Lady in Red was a witness to the murder. In episode 9, we didn’t see clearly the face of the second son, nor the face of the man in blue that was with the Lady in Red.

After the killing, they found the dead body and Dark Hole, told his father that the culprit was Bulgasal. “Bulgasal did it, father!”. Dark Hole is also a great actor.

So, my guess is that they hunted down the mountains for them, something happened in between we don’t know yet and somehow after the killing OR after the hunt
The Lady in Red cursed Dark Hole.

So, there is a chance that Bulgasal didn’t exist at all and Dark Hole was the first of the kind, simply because he said so and made it his reality.

If that is the case, then Lady in Red with the Man in Blue could be deities, based on the painting, and those who were keeping at bay, the monsters in the vicinity.

After the curse, the Dark Hole was killing villagers and he was imitating the Lady in Red and took control of the Monsters as well.

Dark Hole is a Cain type character who killed his brother Abel and even though he was wrong and punished by the Lady in Red for his crime, he started his vengeance.

He was taking revenge on the Lady in Red and in between he inserted several characters in his karma.

Now, we don’t know who Hwal was in all this. Was Hwal his dead brother or the man in blue? It remains to be seen…

  13. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

My Agapimeni Doensaeng Cleo! Thanks a lot for your summary of characters and the action as known so far. That helps tremendously if I ever have the energy and interest to jump in again. I’ll probably skip episodes and just hop on when I feel like it.

I’m assuming that as we’re in Episode 10 already, all the characters should be in position, but we just need more clues as to who is whom. I’d get annoyed if show suddenly throws up a totally new character after this.

From what you say, Bulgasal may just be a figment of Dark Hole’s imagination that took form/life from his mind, and therefore has no soul of his own.

So far Si Ho and Do Yun are linked by pain in Si Ho if Do Yun gets stabbed? And there’s another ‘pain’ link between Sang Un and Dark Hole? I hope the logic holds or it’s just a confusing mess of how they are linked, and sometimes the pain comes and sometimes it doesn’t.

  14. My agapimeni @GB,

Yes, so far that is the 1.000 plotline.

As for the 600 plotline, it is basically as it is with the revelation that Dark Hole was the one who killed HWal’s family and framed Lady in Red. Now, the reason why Lady in Red killed Hwal and made him Bulgasal could be that they made a promise 1000 years ago to stop Dark Hole, but Hwal wasn’t remembering it in his current lifetime.

Hwal was born with Bulgasal’s grudge. Who put that grudge? I truly believe it was Dark Hole who did it and not Lady in Red.

    What we know so far:
Detective Kwon as the General then, raised him and he gave him his name.
At that time, General’s daughter had a special gift herself and we know that Si Ho has also the same gift since she is the reincarnation of Hwal’s wife. A-Chan was born blind and we see that Do-Yun was born blind as well.

In their past lives, Si Ho and Do Yun were mother and child and Dark Hole killed them while he was imitating to be the Lady in Red. That means they still share a link in this life too, since none of them has been out of this karma cycle that Dark Hole started 1000 years ago and then Hwal got into it 600 years ago – IF HWal was not dragged into this from 1000 years ago as well.

So, Si Ho with that pain realized something was wrong and in the preview she will also have a dream where she will see Do Yun’s soul visiting her. I guess the boy won’t make it.

In this dramaverse, those souls who are interwined with each are constantly feeling the same thing or taking the same choices, etc…

Dark Hole feels San Un’s pain.

Si Ho got informed that something is wrong. Plus SiHo was Do Yun’s mother in their previous life. It is like a hyper intuition mostly because Dark Hole killed again Do Yun / A-Chan in the same way he did 600 years ago.

It is like the pain of the wound is making them alert. I don’t know if the reason that happens is because Dark Hole killed him with his dagger. I mean if Dark Hole used the object to kill them before, it might have an evil vibe.

I think that Dark Hole is cursed by the Lady in Red to feel the pain he inflicted to his brother and others. Dark Hole as a human being was heartless. He killed his own flesh because of envy. So, he kinda lost his heart, his link to being / remain humane. That’s why he has a hole in that place. He has a hole where his heart was.

As for Hwal, Episodes 9-10 were very touching. Mostly because we are witnessing that he is still a human being regardless having lost his soul. What was spot on for me was the wailing of Detective Kwon and Sang Un when they saw Do Yun’s body.
As for Hwal you have to check it yourself. I was deeply touched by it.

  15. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks very much for your detailed explanation and narration, @Cleo. I feel totally up to date with the show! 🙂

  16. You are welcome @GB Unnie 🙂

I like this show, even though is fragmented! For me it is like a riddle, I need to solve 😀

  17. K-drama Grandma (K-d G)

I’m glad there are so many great theories, because I’m totally lost at this point! If I understand right, the detective is the reincarnation of both Bulgasal’s dads? Plus both Bulgasal’s are brothers, and both used to be human? We have no idea of the story of who the red lady Bulgasal is, or how/if she is related to either of them? Or who the 2 deities are, or if they are 2 of the 3 remaining Bulgasals? I’m fascinated -and confused!

Yes, I think it hints that the reincarnated blind son is now either between life and death, or dead. We’ll see. His reincarnated mom having womb pain as he was stabbed, wow! Hopefully she won’t lose this (reincarnated?) baby, who was stillborn in her former life. So much intertwined fate between them all!

  18. Thank you, @Cleopatra and everyone here to watched these episodes and posted spoilers. Lile @GB said, thanks to this thread, I am now up-to-date on the back stories to thr back story and I don’t need to subject myself to all the gore again! 😢 I’ll probably practise JOMO and just keep reading the posts here😃

  19. Kalimera Everyone!

@Phoenix, you are welcome! The gore has subsided for some episodes now…

Anyway, here is a great video made by Ella!
