Business Proposal: Ep 3 The Mandela Effect

I’m laughing as I report to my 12 blog followers 🤪 that we recently experienced the “Mandela Effect” on the blog. Did you start it, @agdr03? Or was it @Fern? 😂😂

What’s the Mandela Effect?

The term simply means mis-remembering a past event.

It was coined by a researcher named Fiona Broome who distinctly remembered that Nelson Mandela died in prison in the 1980s. You can then imagined her confusion when she found out that he died a free man in 2013 after becoming the South African president.

As she began talking to people about her mis-remembering a historical event, she discovered that she wasn’t alone. Countless other people also remembered hearing the news of his death when they were growing up in the 80s.

She then called this fascinating distortion of the memory as the “Mandela Effect.” It’s a phenomenon when a group of people remember an event that actually did NOT happen.

The phenomenon doesn’t only apply to historical people. It also happens to household items, cultural icons, misquotations, and (unfortunately) eyewitness reports.

Here, I’ll share examples from the “Good Housekeeping” magazine of popular items often mis-remembered. Go ahead and test yourselves.

Is it Double Stuff Oreos (two f’s) or Double Stuf Oreos (single f)?

And oh, here’s a classic one. In the movie “Risky Business,” what was Tom Cruise wearing? List all that applies.

a. white shirt
b. pink shirt
c. Ray Bans
d. underwear
e. socks

To save you the trouble, I’ll add the link to the YT video at the end so you can check it for yourself.

That’s the Mandela Effect for you. It’s not just senioritis.

Here on this blog, we had a recent occurrence of the Mandela Effect. We thought that this was the second time that Taemoo gave Hari a handkerchief.

We’re wrong. That was actually his first time.

I don’t know about you, but I got confused because this actor, Ahn Hyo Seop, had another drama where a handkerchief was prominently featured. The drama was “Lovers of the Red Sky.”

From Episode 1:

From Episode 9:

That’s where my false memory came from. 😂😂

Here’s Tom Cruise’s “Risky Business” clip.

  1. LOL! I did not know about this “Mandela Effect”. Thanks for the other examples @PM3. That was fun and I have no idea what is correct. I will be an easy prey for counterfeit items.

I’m so glad it’s not senioritis! Hahaha!

  2. I’m the culprit for the lost handkerchiefs! 🙋🏻‍♀️😂

Wow! It even has a term. Cool! Thanks! 🤣

Oh I’m feeling the senioritis because I forgot about the red hanky in Lover’s of the Red Sky. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I’ll look at the Mandela Effect with the boys. 😄

  3. I thought it was two handkerchiefs as well. The second shot of the handkerchief was later, when they had stopped at the kiosk for tteokbokki. For some reason, I thought it was another time frame and not the same night.

My older daughter thought that Mandela had died in prison.🤪

LOL Thanks @pkml3! I was about to scan the earlier episodes to see if I missed the first handkerchief scene. I definitely do suffer from seniorities, therefore I find myself going back to check on things a lot.

The thing is, it can start so innocently and spread so far and wide. And it’s worse now when we get on social media to share something we think is true. I find myself holding back on lots of stuff that’s going around because I can’t find out if it’s fake or true.

Anyway, thanks for this. It was fun playing along and I got most of it right!! Yeah! 😆 😇

  5. I wasn’t paying attention to the handkerchief because I was too busy fangirling over MeloMance. I’ve loved their music, especially the vocals of Kim Min Seok, in many Kdrama OSTs so it was fun to see them onscreen.

@pm3, You are a veritable font of knowledge. Thank you for giving us the Mandela effect. Once again you prove that the BOD blog is like taking a great college course where you learn so much but also enjoy the process.

  7. I’m with you on this @OAL! Though I should take lessons more often 😛 I’m so inconsistent.

I remembered thinking about checking when it was the first time he gave her handkerchief but it slipped my mind. You are amazing how you can turn this into something I never knew about: Mandela effect. New thing I’ve learnt today!

@grace and @packmule3 Another reason I love this blog and what I learn from this is the stuff I can now spring on snooty, snobby aquaintances and family members who tend to look down their noses at anything out of their wheelhouses. I usually a polite listener but when I sense them bullying, that’s when I bring out the big guns(and I’ve learned so much here). Not to worry. I’m polite.
