Business Proposal: Episode 3 Quick Takes

In the first two episodes, we were introduced to the characters, shown their connections, and given a picture of how they all fit (or don’t fit, in the case of Hari) like puzzle pieces. In this episode, I think more pieces were dropped which would later contribute to a grand revelation about the characters or to the romance between the couples.

1. The Trick Questions

Hari bragged that she memorized Taemoo’s entire profile just in case she was interrogated by his grandpa.

Hari: Ask me anything. I’ll get it right.
Taemoo: Is that so? Then, if my grandfather asked to see you on Saturday, two weeks from now, what would be the correct way to respond?
Hari: Oooh. Well, there’s no real reason to say no if your grandfather is asking to see me. So shouldn’t I just say, sure?
Taemoo: Ding! “No” is the right answer.
Hari: Why?
Taemoo: That day is our one-year anniversary. Don’t couples usually spend time together on days like that?
Hari: Ahhh.
Taemoo: Are you sure you studied properly?
Hari: But that was a trick question.
Taemoo: That’s why simple memorization won’t always work.

My observations:

a. Taemoo might not have dated before and he might be a workaholic, but he was aware that romantic social conventions.

b. Hari learned that it wasn’t enough to regurgitate the facts, but she could use the facts as embellishments to make their relationship look more real.

c. I wonder if a detailed-oriented man like Taemoo would remember their one-year anniversary. He should, really.

Hari: Then, let me ask you something too. What was I wearing when we first met?
Taemoo: How could I possibly know that?
Hari: Ding! Of course, you should remember! After all, it was the first day we met. On the day we first met, it was raining in New York. Just so you know, I looked up the actual weather that day in New York.

She imagined them meeting in the rain. She was wearing a bright yellow raincoat. Lol. This is a kdrama trope.

Taemoo: Falling in love just like that? That’s highly unlikely.
Hari: Why not? I think your grandfather will be completely fooled with the details about the weather and everything.
Taemoo: (brushing back his hair) I don’t like rainy days. Let’s change the date instead.

My comments:

a. I wonder if he actually forgot her outfit on their blind date. How could he forget her removing her jacket, getting goosebumps, and jiggling her Samantha and Rachel?

b. I like that Hari went so far as to research the weather in New York on their first day they met. That showed initiative on her part. And her creativity. She wasn’t just memorizing the facts.

But her made-up story reminded me of that song “My Favorite Love Story” from the musical, “Maybe Happy Ending.” The two robots were also trying to concoct a story of how they met and fell in love in the rain.

c. I’m guessing that it’ll be revealed that his parents died on a rainy day or something traumatic. That’s why he detested rainy days, and he clammed up at the luncheon with his grandpa when Hari mentioned the rainy day when they reconciled.

Btw, “Thomas Hoopes Prize” is a real thing in Harvard. It’s awarded for scholarly research in humanities or science. But the production team misspelled Harvard here. Lol.

2. Shin Hari got hurt more than a couple of times in this episode.

Physically:

a. She bumped her face on the car window when Taemoo pushed away her sleeping head. She thought it was her fault because her head was lolling as she dozed. And he feigned ignorance.

It was funny how her thick make-up left an imprint on his car window. Did you all hear the smooching sound effects when Taemoo saw her face print?

b. Being hit by a baseball isn’t funny. Both my son and I have been hit by baseballs and I can assure you they were painful and bloody.

This time, he rushed to save her from the ball, but he was too late so he got her a cup of ice for her bruised eyes.

Emotionally:

a. He heard her crying over the phone and he put the phone away. The following day, he also pretended not to have heard her crying.

b. He observed her crying during the concert, and he handed her his hanky.

Taemoo: Hari: Do you usually cry so easily? You bawled yesterday too.
Hari: But you said you didn’t hear–
Taemoo: It seemed like you didn’t want me to know so
Hari: Thank you for today. For everything. For pretending that you didn’t notice that I cried yesterday. And for coming to the concert with me, which I would have gone to all by myself.
Taemoo: Not only that.
Hari: (looking up at him)
Taemoo: I almost looked like a really pitiful person because you cried like that during the concert.

Meaning, she should also thank him for enduring the embarrassment of being thought of as a rebound boyfriend.

Hari: What are you talking about?
Taemoo: The women next to me were talking about it pretty loudly. That I was just your friend’s replacement.
Hari: (gasp) I’m sorry.
Taemoo: No need to be sorry. I mean, it’s not like I’m your real boyfriend. Did you really have a crush on him for seven years?
Hari: Was it really that noticeable?
Taemoo: Isn’t it obvious when you add up your friend’s message and your crying? Anyway, I think you got your closure today.

Lol. Wait until he hears the chef in charge of the white kimchi ravioli project is Hari’s  Minwoo.

Hari: Yeah. I’m going to accept that I got rejected and end it, clean and simple. That friend of mine got back together with his ex-girlfriend. I don’t regret it though. I was really happy for those seven years. Someone like you who can’t tolerate wasting time can’t understand that, right?

Yes, that’s Hari’s opinion of Taemoo since Taemoo even skipped his inaugural address at the company. It should make her wonder why he bothered to pursue her after she already turned him down.

Taemoo: Well, it’s not always that way.
Hari: What?
Taemoo: There are some things that get results with a short amount of time. And other things where you risk the losses and stay in it for the long run. It’s difficult to decide how good or bad something is just by how long it takes.
Hari: (giggles)
Taemoo: Why are you laughing? There’s nothing funny about that.
Hari: No. It’s funny that you’re comparing things to your job even in a situation like this.
Taemoo: (defensively) My apologies. I’ve never tried to comfort anyone before.
Hari: That was comforting enough.

Comments:

a. I think this is a breakthrough for him. He’s comforting a person — her! — for the first time.

b. I think we’ll see more of Taemoo protecting Hari from getting hurt, both physically and emotionally, in the future. It’ll come more natural and spontaneous as time goes on.

3. Meeting with Grandpa was underwhelming.

Grandpa thought the restaurant hostess was Taemo’s girlfriend. He shook her hand and complimented her. “Ms. Shin Geumhui! You’re as beautiful as I imagined.” This indicated that Grandpa was expected Taemoo to select a boring girlfriend.

I don’t think this moment was well-acted at all. According to the grandpa, he acted stiff when he first saw her because his first impression of the way she was dressed wasn’t great.

He was supposed to display disapproval of Hari’s outfit and make-up. But I didn’t see stiffness in the actor’s performance. He just glanced at Taemoo.

It also didn’t show that he was grilling Hari during the luncheon. Hari was about to take a huge bite when he began asking her questions.

Grandpa: You said that you majored in art in New York?
Hari: (putting down her chopstick) Oh yes, sir.
Grandpa: I supposed that’s why you seem so unique.

Was this supposed to be a criticism of her outfit? The grandpa sounded like he was just being curious, though.

Hari: (thinking to herself) Since I was meeting the chairman, I put on a lot of makeup so I wouldn’t get busted. But was it overkill? (then offering food to the Grandpa) Try this dish, sir. They say potatoes are good for hypertension. Taemoo told me about your hypertension.
Grandpa: I have diabetes, too. Some bland vegetables like these are probably better than anything that’s been cooked to be all sweet and salty, right?

Was he acting querulous here? I don’t think the actor got the memo that he was supposed to act testy and curmudgeonly. He wanted to test Hari.

Hari: Ah, indeed. Eating habits are important, but it’s even better to combine it with exercise. I heard that you like hiking, too.

It’s a good thing she memorized the facts. Now, she was adlibbing.

Grandpa: Yes, I do. Do you like hiking as well, Ms. Shin?
Hari: Yes, I like it a lot! Taemoo! Do you remember? On Mount Brunnin Switzerland, we enjoyed the stars together at night. It was beautiful.
Grandpa: Ms. Shin. Do you love Taemoo?

Here, he deliberately put her on the spot.

Hari: (pausing then beaming at Taemoo) Of course! I’m dating him because I love him.
Grandpa: Then why did you break up?
Hari: That’s…
Taemoo: Grandpa. You can’t just ask something like that so directly.

Well, it was about time he stepped in! He was hanging her out to dry. They hadn’t planned an answer for this line of questioning.

Grandpa: I’m asking because it’s something that needs to be asked, you rascal. (looking at Hari) Come on, answer me.

He must know that he sounded like one of the rich antagonists from his kdramas.

Hari: Well. I thought that he cared about work more than he did about me.
Grandpa: Taemoo is someone who knows nothing besides work. That won’t change in the future, either. Are you okay with that? Because you’ll keep fighting about it.
Hari: Don’t worry. When we talked things over this time, I decided I would understand that Taemoo prioritizes work over everything else. He was so crazy about his work that I ignored all his calls after telling him “Let’s break up.” But he canceled an important meeting he had scheduled and ran over to see me.
Grandpa: This boy really skipped a meeting to go see you?
Taemoo: (smiling)
Hari: Yes. On top of that, you know Taemoo hates the rain, right? It was raining that day, and yet he still came.
Taemoo: (transfixed by the thought of rain again)
Grandpa: Is that true, Taemoo?
Taemoo: Let’s eat first and discuss that later. The food’s getting cold.

My comments:

a. The actor playing Grandpa is good playing the comedic moments. He could act the irascible but lovable old man. But here in this critical moment, his delivery was frankly underwhelming. There was no nuance in his delivery. The actress Kim Sejeong “hard carried” this scene.

b. It was a bit anticlimactic when Grandpa didn’t say anything about Shin GuemHui’s name. I thought he would mention that her name was currently popularized in a kdrama.

c. Her made-up story about Taemoo cancelling an important meeting to see could be viewed as a foreshadowing. Taemoo had an important meeting, but he was forced to attend the concert with Hari.

d. Yes, Taemoo does prioritize his work. That’s why his grandpa was surprised by his choice of girlfriend. He expected Taemoo to date somebody sober and composed, who wouldn’t distract him from his work.

The fact that Taemoo chose Hari despite knowing that she was “overly emotional and easily distracted” meant that he secretly enjoyed her kind of disruption.

e. Hari proved that she was great storyteller. She whipped up a credible story by mixing a bit of reality with her fantasy. Even Taemoo looked pleased with her because she was successfully fielding his grandpa’s nosy questions. But he didn’t foresee her mentioning his aversion to rain to bolster her story about their relationship.

f. I expect that in the future, Taemoo will prioritize her over work.

4. “Love, Maybe” by Melomance

This drama has an unusual way of incorporating the OST for the drama. In Episode 2, Hari had the OST as background music while she called to mind her numerous jobs to support herself. In this episode, the OST was the song dedicated to her at the concert.

I thought it was sweet of him to hand her his hanky.

He was observing her during the concert to gauge her emotions.

Just like in the car, he was observing her when she wasn’t looking. He was checking to see if she was okay after her crying jag the previous night.

And this time, too, when she dozed off in the car.

As it turned out, it wasn’t only Taemoo who had a pressing need to have date. She also needed a date on that day. She would have looked pitiful if she had gone to the concert solo.

5. The start of an inefficient friendship

Hari: Mr. Kang. Could I make a small suggestion?
Taemoo: Sure. What is it?
Hari: Instead of a fake relationship like this, why don’t you try a real one? You might think it’s a waste of time to be in a relationship right now, but if you think long-term, it might be more efficient. You know, you could even get married.
Taemoo: Married?
Hari: Yes. Being in a fake relationship with me means there isn’t really a future. So maybe this is an even bigger waste of time.
Taemo: (just smiled)

Her taxi arrived and she handed him a freebie gift from the concert. She didn’t know what it is, but it was most likely something that would cheer him up when he was down.

When he texted her that night, he signed himself as “Archaeopteryx.”

Taemoo: Today was inefficient, but it was fun. Archaeopteryx.

And she guessed right. The gift from the concert had an enclosed note, “Talk to me when you’re feeling down. I’ll be there for you.” So he asked the dolls for their opinion.

Taemoo: Be in a real relationship instead of a fake one? What do you guys think?

My comments:

a. This stuffed toy is a trope, too. But usually, it’s the heroine who talks to the stuffed toy, not the hero.

b. This ties in with his earlier remark that some things have fast results while others don’t. I think he realizes that he may have to risk the losses and stay in a fake relationship with Hari if that’s the only pathway for him.

c. It’s cute that he didn’t mind being called Archaeopteryx anymore.

d. I view his text as his “first” love letter to her.

That’s it for now. 🙂

  1. I thought it wasn’t funny that grandpa thought the lady attendant was Shin Geumhui.

Yes, he could have asked Hari if she’s watching his favourite soap because of her name.

To sign off as archaeopteryx on his message to her definitely means something. ☺️ It’s similar to what Hari was saying about him not liking the rain. He didn’t liked being told he looks like an archaeopteryx but he signed off on it. ☺️

  2. I’m guessing that he doesn’t like the rain because it was raining when his parents died. He doesn’t like being called an archaeopteryx because he thinks he’s handsome. 😂

I laughed when Hari head-butted him 🙂and he fainted. Hari must have a tough skull.

Also when he was upset that the kdrama his grandpa was watching featured an accidental kiss.

Was this the second time Hari received a hanky from Taemoo? I can’t remember the first time, though.

    Good night! 😴

  3. Old American Lady (OAL)

Random stuff- Brandpa usinga facial mask with a animal theme. Hari using a face mask(civid style) to disguise herself while ma,ING the kitchen ravioli presentation in front of the board. The phony relationship contract negotiation and its penalties. The almost outing if Hari when her handbag spilled briefly showing her real ID. The whole moving in sequence with eye second FL and ML with the roach, unanimated and animated-a chance for some physical humor (theclever use of a paper cup and bug spray-and the realization that even in luxury buildings there can easily roaches.. Hari’s food research and food sense that probably foreshadows our OTP’s underlying and strong connection. Our second FL’-s strange unrealistic relationship with money when she doesn’t have her dad’s credit card (still don’t understand how she can afford that apartment-liked the sofa but white is so impractical).

We need grandpa to watch more dramas. I think that he made the connection with the name of the drama character(at least the name wasn’t Shin Hyun Been).

At last a lead who speaks English well.usually we don’t get the good stuff. OK tzecceon speaks it well as does Park Min Young and Chki Woo shik. I also imagine the same for Gong Hyo Jin who went to school in Brisbane. But you don’t hear a lot of English from them. Youn Yuh Jung speaks well because she spent years in St. Pete F,Orinda and gopher kids ,I’ve in the LA area(she’ll be a presenter at this year’s Oscars).

Last observation-I hope they can keep some of the hilarity in this drama going forward. I really hope they can mine more tropes for humor

  4. Right on the ball with rain and the archaeopteryx references to him. 😂

Same here, I was laughing when he was remembering the accidental kiss but it’s more funny because it’s his own drama but he doesn’t realise it. 😂

I’m getting confused with all the handkerchief giving in the dramas I’m watching so just ignore that. 😂

    Night! Night!

  5. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks @pkml3! LOL that strange missing hanky scene. I can’t recall that there was an earlier scene either. But I really liked that he was actually attentive towards her, who was a ‘waste of time’ in his usual run of the day.

I think he was bluffing when she asked if he remembered her outfit on their first date. He probably didn’t want to embarrass himself or her by remembering Samantha and Rachel.

I thought I was just imagining the sound of a smooch when we were shown the imprint of Ha Ri’s face on the car window. LOL. So he was fantasizing giving her a kiss?

Definitely if he’s accepted being called an Archaeopteryx, he’s already half-way to taking the risks of losses and staying for the long run.

This is what I watch sweet romances for … the coming around of the party who didst protest too much. 🙂

  6. I didn’t think this episode was as funny as the first two. Well maybe the roach 🪳 part but nothing major. Getting hit by a baseball is no laughing matter either and I think that black eye could have been blacker.
Although, I Still liked it this episode for the breakthrough you mentioned.

I agree with you @pm3 regarding the meeting grandpa a bit lacking. I also thought they would go a different route with FL name and grandpa. He does mention the name similarity to Taemoo when he is watching his drama and has his mask on. That’s when Taemoo remembers the “kiss” lol

Side note- @pm3 – I was just finding out about the yellow umbrella trope 😄. The hong sister mentioned on your other post got me to go back to Hwayugi and rewatch bits and pieces, which led me to read your posts on the episodes, which led me to the post on yellow umbrellas 🤣🤣

  7. Since this is in Netflix, I took the plunge and will join you all in this funny fluff. As long as I don’t take this drama seriously including acting (webtoonish) and the tropes, some ridiculous scenarios – then it is no-brained fun.

I like the FL Hari. She looks like Emma Stone And she carries the show. I am not as impressed as the ML actor. He does look like archaeopteryx and he finally acknowledged it, too! LOL!

Lastly, Happy International Women’s Day, Bitches!!! 🌸🌸🌸

  8. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Happy International Women’s Day to you too @Janey! And to all Women who pass through our Bitchy Halls. LOL.

  9. Kalimera Ladies and Happy International Women’s Day to us all.

It would be great IF we were celebrating our Womanhood everyday and not in one specific day, because that means we are not treated fairly or good.

@Packmule3, you are spot on with what you wrote. I have read the manga up until the middle. The Kdrama took a different road from the manga. I can say in which parts if you want to know. 🙂

I like them both, but the scene stealer is HaRi mostly because of her role and facial ministrations. Archaeopteryx is a sweetheart and you will witness it when he will overcome his rigid persona…*smiles*

@Janey, I came across a video on FB about SeJeong being the Korean Emma Stone and I laughed so very much!

  10. @Cleopatra, feel free to tell us where the show diverged from the manga. I don’t think the manga had enough content for even 12 episodes 😂😂 so I’m guessing that a screenwriter was hired to create more interaction.

  11. Yes, @Carolina. That eye contusion would have been black-and-blue in real life, and her eye would have swollen shut. And I would have worried about

I got hit but thankfully, it wasn’t a fast ball. We were little kids then and there wasn’t much force behind the pitch. I had a bloody nose, and a trip to the ER.

My son got hit in high school and he broke his nose. He had surgery to repair some cartilage or something. 😂 It wasn’t cosmetic surgery.

And he had to wear this plastic face shield that made him look like Hannibal Lecter when he returned to baseball.

Haha. Don’t binge-read my posts now. Yes, there’s a yellow umbrella trope in kdramas. In this drama, the symbolism was clear. The girl brought sunshine ☀️ into his life, so even when it was dark and gray outside, because of the rainy weather, he had his own personal sunshine with him, under his yellow umbrella. 🙂🙂

  12. Dear @Packmule3,

The manga has 171 episodes. I am currently in Episode 70. Many things are happening until that point.

First of all, HaRI is working on accounting in the manga. She will go MIA for one week, after her eye accident and she won’t meet Abeoji at all in that part of the story!

Archaeopteryx, which is an alias used only for the drama, will find out by himself that Hari was his date. Because she is wearing eyeglasses to cover her swelling.

He won’t say anything to her. He will say to his grandfather an excuse and his grandfather will understand that he was dating was a lie in order not to go to other blind dates.

We have an introduction to Hari’s friend Ha min who is not a chef. He is a douche.
I don’t know how they will cover this part.

Archaeopteryx will pursue Hari. They will “date” mostly because of a misconception. Kang will be very protective of HaRi and take good care of her.

(BTW, yes Archaeopteryx will put HaRi first and then his work! LMAO!)

She won’t know that he knows and when she will realize her feelings about him.
Then she will tell him to break up…

They will only meet Abeoji after when they will officially date.

AND I haven’t even mentioned about our second couple yet! LMAO!

  13. Ah! So he will prioritize Hari before his work. 😂 I thought he was listening too well when she hade up that fake story of their break-up.

Plus, his trick question was a giveaway. According to him, the “correct” answer was going to their couple anniversary instead of acceding to his grandpas request.

Just a side note: in one of their promotional videos, the actors played a game. Han Hyoseop and Kim Soyeong were asked which one would they go to: a date that has been scheduled a long time ago or an impromptu company meeting. AHS said date. KS said work. KS said she hoped her boyfriend would understand her decision. 😂

So “Archaeopteryx” was made up by the screenwriter? I guess when AHS was cast, he reminded the screenwriter of the bird?

Why will she go MIA? Because of her black eye? Lol.

Thanks for the manga update, @Cleopatra. 👍👍

  14. GB,

The smooching sound effect was real. 😘 And did you see the face imprint? Even the strands of her bangs left their mark. 😂😂

  15. @Packmule3,

You are welcome! Yes, she will go MIA because of the swelling. She doesn’t want him to see her face like that. LOL

BUT first, she will inform him that she will won’t be available for a week and she won’t answered to his calls.

Our ML is a softie inside and he will be very protective of HaRi and not only of her.

Archaeopteryx is the Writernim’s finding! Dunno how they made this up!
Maybe they wanted the comic relief?

I haven’t watched that promotional video. I need to find it then!

As for the second couple, in the manga, they are an item before our main couple, but the most known k-drama trope about rich and poor will take place, before they find their happiness.

I am in a point that I want to see what else they have in store. I mean, there are more 101 episodes! LOL!

  16. Thank you, @packmule3. While Tae-moo might not be experienced or have the top emotional IQ, his real IQ is large enough to make the connections about Ha-ri, the dedication and her tears. He’s getting there. As you say, I think he will become very protective and attached to her.

The day before when she was sobbing and he could hear it over the phone, he didn’t hang up in horror, disgust, or even out of respect for her privacy, but kept listening. Did he think she might come to her senses and speak to him? He was very curious about the situation.

He said to Sung-hoon in episode 2 that she was more interesting than his other blind dates. They seemed to be ‘cookie-cutter’ same to him. In this episode Sung-hoon describes her as oddly endearing, which I like. Tae-moo challenges this, “Is being overly-emotional and easily distracted endearing?” Yet, he doesn’t disagree and he smiles at her make-up imprint on the window. 😄 Had he pushed her away because she was starting to wake up or because he was worried that she would get make-up all over his nice jacket?

  17. Fern,

To me, he pushed her away because she was waking up and he didn’t want her to see him cradling her head.

I also thought he turned sideways to secretly “offer” his shoulder for her to lean on should she wobble again to his side. He wasn’t giving her a “cold” shoulder. 😂

  18. I know. I was joking, because wearing so much foundation would completely ruin a jacket. Ha-ri stayed up all night cramming on his details and she was completely exhausted. I think he may have realised that. And I think he felt bad that he pushed her away harder than he meant to. I think we’ll get a scene when he does let her sleep on his shoulder.

Ha-ri stayed up all night to get the presentation ready for the chef as well, and lied about that to her immediate supervisor. She goes all out with a task. I thought that presentation was very good under the circumstances. We learned that her immediate boss didn’t want to present because Kang had already forbidden the managers to present their subordinates’ work and that Mr Gye, the more senior man in the office had stage fright so couldn’t do it. Clearly, presentation anxiety isn’t a problem for Ha-ri, the manager said she was more familiar with the topic and was more eloquent, so that bodes well.

  19. I meant to say that a smear of the foundation would really soil or ruin a jacket. We have to assume that Tae-moo is personally able to keep his own jacket respectable.

  20. About the presentation, I also laughed when Hari wore her boss’ purple glasses to the presentation.

I was wondering what happened to her boss when she showed up without her purple glasses. I didn’t recognize her at first. And then Hari walked in with the glasses, and I laughed.

And yes, talking about smearing make-up on the jacket… did you notice the white couch of her bestie? I shuddered when she put her red lips close to the couch, as if to kiss it. I hope that’s non-transferable red lipstick. lol. 🙂

Okay. I’ve to finish something before I leave for work….

  21. I feel so old for thinking that pure white furnishings and even coats and jackets are impractical. But I’ve been there and done that because it’s a pretty look. No longer, though as they get grubby even without spills, accidents, or pets.

  22. High five, Fern!!

    White furniture is so impractical.

We had whites too. And they were the first to go when we had our first child. Worrying about spills and stains was just unnecessary stress, and we could hardly “cordon” off our own child from the living room and the master bedroom when a house is meant to be lived in.

  23. I thought that Min-woo was thickly insensitive to dedicate the song to Ha-ri in that way. What a &*%(*. Whether she brought a date along or not, she would be made to look pitiful.

  24. I concur, @Fern! I was going to raise this point but didn’t have time.

Sure, Minwoo had good intentions, but what the heck?! He advertised to the whole assembly that his friend had an unrequited love for him? Was he bragging? What an ego trip!

Also, don’t you just hate that he knew all along that she had a crush on him? So for seven years, he didn’t think to be more discreet about his romantic flings or to refrain from doing anything that could be misinterpreted as loving?

To me, he led her on, too. Pffft.

He’d better not display jealousy when he discovers Hari with Taemoo. 🙂

  25. Ha-ri said to Tae-Moo that she accepted that Min-woo was in love with the other girl and just dreamed of the day when it might be her. Especially after Min-woo and the girl broke up. So Ha-ri was rather invested in her fantasy love. She said as much to Tae-moo when she said he might think it was a waste of time, but the 7 years crush made her happy anyway.

But after hearing the dedication it seems that Min-woo knew she had a crush and he didn’t make any effort to tell her that it wasn’t mutual. I suppose, if she had verbally confessed, he might have rejected her as he did with all of the other women who pursued him.

Yes, I think Min-woo is insensitive enough to have a change of heart when he thinks Ha-ri is with Tae-moo and therefore has gained an element of un-attainability or added value.

OH; another trope possibly — Yeong-seo mentioned evil chaebol relatives who might have planned the accident in which Tae-moo’s parents died. –The stuff of Sageuks and makjang dramas. She also said that Chairman Kang fired all relatives to protect Tae-moo.

  26. Old American Lady (OAL)

I had a white convertible sofa when I lived in a studio when I was single. It followed me to my first apartment after I married. It became stained and shabby even with the help of Scotch Guard.

Also if you see one roach there are more to follow even in luxury buildings. They have been around since prehistoric times. They probably will outlast humans. The animated roach was actually 😍.

  27. Old American Lady (OAL,)

Hi everyone, To add insult to injury Minwoo’ gfis Hari’s colleague. To me that’s downright caddish. Hari can never forget this because she sees her at work.I am also assuming that gf knew about Hari’s crush all along. K Dramas always seem to do a great job with humiliation. Ouch!

  28. @Old American Lady, I misinterpreted that. I thought Min-woo rejected that girl and gave the present back that she had brought to him. The list of girls he rejected was rather long – my first thought was that he might be gay like Yumi’s first crush in Yumi’s cells.

  29. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Yes, my dear practical Bitches who have to choose furniture, we have learnt that white or even cream is not a practical colour for any household stuff that cannot be tossed into a washing machine. At IKEA this week, I found cushions to cover my hard dining chairs… a choice between dark grey and white…. I chose dark grey LOLOL.

I was also in the market for a carpet to replace the threadbare one… cream or grey? Yup I chose grey once again!!

I decided that the colour of the rest of my furnishings might slowly be converted to silvery-grey with peachy pink tones or something like that. One day my living area will match its old furnishings and so will my dining area LOL.

  30. Old American Lady (OAL)

@GB, Gray is a great choice. It’s a classic neutral with lots of shades. Most colors match with it and you can layer patterns over it. I hope you have fun with your redo. If you do it slowly you can savor each addition.AsMarie Kondo points out, yet the joy!

  31. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I so agree @OAL, however unlike Marie Kondo, my family and I have a hard time letting go of stuff. So it’s going to take ages to clear out the other coloured furnishings. But like Marie Kondo, I, at least, will have fun slowly adding on the pieces. 🙂

  32. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, @packmule3. Done with Episode 3 and I am still loving it!!! It is light and funny, a great escape from the realities of pandamic and war. Your quick takes help me a lot to appreciate the details in the drama. Can’t wait to read your views on episode 4. Hope they come soon. xoxo

  33. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    @pkml3 @Fern @Cleo
I can’t locate the point (on another thread) that @Cleo made about Min Woo being a douche, but I went back to Ep 1, and realised that even there when Young Seo asked Ha Ri what she’d do on her birthday, there was a negative vibe around mention of Min Woo.

Young Seo : “Min Woo? Why is he calling you on your birthday? After he made you do all the work for his new menu?”
(We gather from this that Min Woo may have kept Young Seo around because she was useful in helping him with his work as chef. She might have done research for him for his menu.)
Ha Ri : “That was hardly work. I had a blast, and I learned a lot too.”

So he likely knew that Ha Ri had a crush on him, and made use of this to keep her helping him. From episode 1, we had a sort of forewarning. Nicely done, show!

  34. Hey @GB Unnie,

Check my comment with timeframe: 08/03/2022 at 6:49am.

This is the part you are looking for!

“We have an introduction to Hari’s friend Ha Min who is not a chef.
He is a douche. I don’t know how they will cover this part.”

On the manga, HaMin is not aware about the HaRi’s crush, but when he finds out about it…HE IS A DOUCHE!

  35. Ah! Thanks for this, @GB. That’s good to know. I wondered who actually concocted the “white kimchee ravioli” because it seems to me that Taemoo won’t be inclined to market it under his family brand (what’s the name again?) now that he discovered what kind of character Minwoo is.

I think Taemoo can be vengeful, and he won’t think twice about disqualifying Chef MW as a “face” of the brand, especially if Taemoo thinks that MW toyed with Hari’s feelings and hurt her.

But if the white kimchee ravioli (and other dishes) was actually Hari’s research or creation for MW’s menu, then she can claim credit for it.

Anyway, this episode shows that there’s more than one chef in the making. Hari can be a chef given her taste buds, and didn’t she instruct her mother how to coat the chicken properly in the sauce?

And Taemoo can be a chef, too. Didn’t he create the salad that they were serve on their date?

I’m predicting that the final product will be a collaboration between Taemoo and Hari, rather than MW and Hari. 🙂

  36. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    Hi @pkml3,
The name of Tae Moo’s brand/company is GoFood.

Yup, our OTP can both be chefs. I’m sure that by the end of the series, Ha Ri may not want to have any collaboration at all with Min Woo. Being the power couple, equally pasisonate in the food arena, Tae Moo and Ha Ri would make a great team.

I’m not sure about the White Kimchee Ravioli… Min Woo said that he was just putting together stuff that was around and came up with that dish. We need more info to know if it was Ha Ri who inspired the dish.

  37. 😂 I don’t trust Minwoo anymore. I would have said, “Really? You just happened to have the ingredients for the white kimchee ravioli at hand, and tossed them together?” I’m sure there was research done, i.e., the water-to-flour ratio for the ravioli, the temperature for cooking without ruining the kimchee, the right filling, etc.

I bet Hari did it herself. She’s the one who’s fascinated with the taste and ingredients of the food.

Kinda like that fancy restaurant that she and Taemoo went to. The owner was only on paper.

  38. Thanks, @GB.

    So Taemoo’s company is GoFood.
And Hari’s chicken restaurant is Goobne.

    But what the hay?? 😂😂😂

There’s a joke. “Goobne” means baked in Korean. Didn’t she say that they made FRIED chicken?

According to Goobne site (it’s an actual food chain?!), they serve the healthier chicken because it isn’t fried but baked. The chicken is oven-roasted. 🍗

  39. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@pkml3, you are probably right. Ha Ri would likely have done the research and Min Woo put the ingredients together. She’s super generous with him and probably wouldn’t have minded if he took her ideas as his own. Hopefully, this would be a habit of the past and Tae Moo, at least, will not let her be taken advantaged of.

Maybe this is a little too far in advance to guess at, but I was wondering if there will be a parallel between Min Woo being a rogue with TM coming to HR’s rescue, with Young Seo picking up a possible voyeur and Sung Hoon coming to her rescue.

LOL, I didn’t know why Ha Ri’s family restaurant was Goobne. Roast chicken eh? I prefer roast to fried too. 🙂

  40. My problem with Minwoo is that for a chef he’s oddly close-lipped about his concoctions. When he served that white Kimchee ravioli at the food tasting, for instance, he didn’t discuss the flavors that Taemoo was supposed to taste.

😂😂 Have you been to a food tasting? Or to a wine tasting? Cheese tasting? The host always always always OVER-explain the taste of the sauce, wine, cheese. You’re never allowed to savor whatever it is you’re eating and drinking in peace. 😂😂 You’ll be informed that the sauce tastes zesty with a hint of sweet mango and chilled jalapeño, or that the wine is earthy with the aroma of burnt tobacco. Whatever it is, there’s a fountain of information gushing at these tastings because the chef or sommelier needs to share his talents.

Kinda like the way Hari explains the food to the grandpa at the luncheon and to Taemoo at their dinner date. Same with Taemoo.

But that isn’t the case with Minwoo. He doesn’t talk about his creations.🤔 I wonder if that’s deliberate or an oversight on the part of the writer.

Also, after his dinner, Taemoo complimented MW, saying, “Now I know why Ms Shin says your food tastes cheerful and happy.” 😂😂 Does Minwoo strike you as a cheerful and happy person? While he was having girl problems? I think it’s Hari who’s cheerful and happy.

  41. Old American Lady (OAL)

@Fern, Midwood is a cad pure and simple. His birthday gift to. Hari was meant to humiliate given what happened at the concert. Same goes for his choice of new/old gf to serve as a reminder to Hari about what she will never have. He doesn’t deserve her love or friendship. But to add insult to injury, she has helped his career as a chef by showcasing his cooking, although the idea was hers. GRRRR…

  42. @OAL, I’m not sure if he’s a cad or just has a very large ego and is stupid with it. If he wanted to keep Ha-ri hanging around to help him with things at his restaurant, he wouldn’t intentionally humiliate or insult her in public. Yet that’s what happened. I think he was stupidly trying to let her down easy and to divert her attention away from him, since he was back with his girlfriend. Hence the note saying to invite a guy and not Yeong-seo. He just did never think that it would actually happen. Yet that’s what happened. And she basically told him to mind his own business – concentrate on his girlfriend, not her.

  43. Old American Lady (OAL)

@Janey and @Fern, our actress who plays Shin Hari, Kim Sejeong has s h own a real talent for comedy and action, in addition to the fact that she was a girl group performer(I guess she can be considered an idol) with a talent for singing and has distinguished herself as a variety show MC. She is also beautiful in a somewhat unconventional way by Korean beauty standards. I can see the comparisons to Emma Stone but I think she is more versatile. I’d ,Ike to also compare her and her bf Seol In Ah to a very attractive version of the Lucy and Ethel characters in I Love Lucy. I can definitely see them stomping grapes. Physical comedy requires similar levels of choreography as action. However, there is the requirement for getting laughs (maybe Jackie Chanmivies combine the two) so I’d love to see these two in an action comedy. I am blown away by their talent and am also reminded of HA Ji Won and Gong Hyo Jin.

Am a day late for International Women’s Day but our female leads personify the fact that actresses need not be damsels in distress or sex bombs or aegyo princesses. Another reason that I’m enjoying this drama.

  44. Old American Lady (OAL)

Question-Is the Sung Hooncharacter a reference to the actor? My thoughts of this actor 5he real Sung Hoon is that This drama has a little bit of his drama, Secret Romance(lots of food references), that Sung hoon has shown himself to be a prodigious Eater on Home Alone and that he does well, in rom coms( he has recently been recast in Love Martiage and Divorce-a makjang). Just curious….

  45. @Old American Lady, I thought of I Love Lucy as well. I agree that Kim Sejeong is a bit unconventional looking; I think she has a very accessible type of beauty. As you say, she is good at many things. IMO she is carrying this drama so far.

  46. Annyeong @PM3 and BOD peepz,

I’m a bit late on my comments but here goes…

Regarding the incorporation of the OST in the show – I rather like it 🙂 especially the concert and ring tone 🙂

re “inefficient friendship” ~ he said BUT FUN… ooh lala. they’re both having FUN 🙂 BUT REAL! Yes, i hope it will turn to REAL soon. by ep 6??

re: freebie gift – dolls – it is rather interesting to have the HERO talk to the dolls. ingenious! another trope, but different. i think he needs it more? haha even though he has a side kick. i feel they don’t confide in each other much.

@OAL – i also noticed that animal facial mask of the grandpa. where can i get that? haha

@Janey – I concur and also notice SeYeong’s resemblance to Emma Stone. so cool. @Cleo, didn’t know she is considered as the Korean EMMa stone. very cool. And thanks for the Manga updates as well. altho i prefer this show 🙂

re: the face imprint. i admire the detail – i don’t think smudge looks so defined haha. but this is manga based so i will accept. but TM really pushed her face or threw her head too much… OUCCH!

RE: meeting with grandpa underwhelming. i concur. but i do like how he seems to push them towards each other though… the concert, the anniv date. gotta love this cupid grandpa 💗 was HR hiding behind TM so the grandpa saw the hostess first??? coz even i was wondering where she could be. ?? no wonder the grandpa was quick to acknowledge the hostess first. i guess the grandpa is a book cover kind’a guy. hmmm

re: minwoo – he has issues. no bueno for HR. but the fact that HR had closure and is over her 7 yr crush on him – horray!

here’s to more love and laughs in this show!

  47. Old American Lady (OAL)

Hi BODS, I don’t think Grandpa likes real Hari based on the bathroom incident(loved that they do bathroom humor-they do a lot of broad humor here). It will be fun to see how Taemoo who knows that Hari is actually his phoney blind date, ends up becoming an accomplice in dealing with grandpa. It should provide more funny moments. I agree that we’ll get serious stuff regarding the accident that killed Taemoo’s parents but humor will save the day. My plot hole question is didn’t Hari violate the false marriage contract by signing her false name? Or do we just ignore this?

I love this show and look forward to it. I watched Uncanny Counter(looking forward to season 2) and liked Kim Sejeong but didn’t pay as much attention to her as the other characters. I will now follow her work and will try to find her singing. S. Korea has so many multitalented performers. I am so happy that I literally stumbled into this world given all of the joy it has brought me.

  48. Not everyone has a discerning palate. I suspect MinWoo may be a good technician in the kitchen, but HaRi is the true culinary artist. She’s also demonstrated that she’s highly creative in many other ways: her ability to think of, and inhabit, the character Shin Geum Hui; her on-the-spot backstory creation, etc.

Did people catch the references in Geum Hui’s nicknames for her pretend augmented breasts? (it is unlikely HaRi has undergone cosmetic surgery.) Samantha is probably a reference to the character Samantha Jones in Sex and the City; Rachel is probably Rachel Green in Friends.

I’m showing my age when I say the FL actress Kim Se Jeong reminds me of a younger Valerie Bertinelli.

  49. @Welmaris, the breast names must be from there. That’s what I thought, too.

Kim Sejeong also reminds me of Goldie Hawn in her twenties. -Something about her wide-set eyes and smile.
