From Now On, Showtime: Eps 13 to 16 Open Thread

The thread is now open.

(6/6/22 update: I’m sorry, @Cleopatra. I don’t know why this thread didn’t go through last weekend. It got stuck in the queue.)

She’s cute as a puppy. Her aegyo suits her very well.

  1. Annyeong,

Thanks @PM3. love the gifs. She is too cute… esp. when she thought that CCW went to his bedroom to take off his clothes hahahahaha. she ended up hurting her neck… and CCW had to massage her… and she couldn’t handle it anymore. LOL.

the white lady ghost of the tunnel cracked me up also. reminiscent of that scary movie THE RING. it’s so funny when they all freaked out and ran away from her. But we get to see a wedding of Gangta Ma and her lovely bride. so glad they didn’t turn evil spirits. wow.

Looks like we’re gonna have some crying mess for next episode 15 😭 as we say goodbye to the ghosts and General Choi. but it’s funny when they try to halt their entrance to Nirvana by making sure CCW doesn’t do anything to make GSH grateful… that double date turned into a disaster. altho i’m thinking why can’t just GSH say the words “thank you”??? but maybe it’s the act of kindness?? hilariously pathetic. oh boy.

i love how the shaman girl realized she really loved officer Lee even though he’s not rich like she thought. hahaha.

so sad that the chief doesn’t realize his son is no longer his son. so glad that fire at the orphanage had a good twist for ghost Ah reum. did you guys noticed how CCW taught her the superhero landing ala BLACK WIDOW??? hahahah love it.

    Thanks @pkml3!

I feel that the reason FL’s aegyo works is because she does it ‘unwittingly’. She’s not out to get the guy but she’s really thrilled or happy and expresses it in a childlike way. It looks natural on her and quite winning.

  3. @Pm3, this drama is a feast as far as acting goes. Both leads in all the comedy scenes, an incredible amount of expressions and micro-expressions. And most of the time, smart comedy! Even some huge gags, somehow by their outrageousness (the end of the bowling scene).

Episode 14, 21:00, we have a new example, and how the comedy is first built by the situation. With the pretext that GSH should not thank CCW. After that, a series of funny scenes. The scene in the restaurant, the writer went looking for all the possibilities that could exist in such a place. The accumulation is very visible and does not try to hide the excess of buffoonery.

In the bathroom, the young shaman Cheon Ye Ji. Here I like a lot the writing of the character, who is respected in its reactions. At the beginning of the episode, she is full of conviction (scene where the grandmother must give sentimental advice to a client). And as soon as she changed her mind, she is petrified of conviction as if it was what she thought for 10 years. The character changes in depth for a part, but remains consistent in her usual attitudes and flaws. The toilet sub-scene continues with some excellent comedy as well.

Instead of green Soju bottles, we have transparent Soju bottles here. The green color of the Soju bottle is the source of its success (ease of recycling and psychological effect of the color). This brand has a transparent version for a historical reason (Jinro version). It is therefore a product placement. However, this version poses problems of recycling.

The episode is very heavy on comedy, with the situation established episode 13 of General Choi as a new recruit. (The other three get back at him for what they suffered in the first episodes).
    04:30. “I’m going to undress”.
Following this: the fake erotic movie, with voice work.
GSH doing sexy mimes, same work on the voice (echo).

Episode 13 was less interesting, and less focused on comedy (except the first moments with the new ghost). To make up for it, this is the episode of the first kiss. This foreshadows the departure to nirvana of the 3 ghosts. Here the resolution for the Gangster. And episode 14, the geek girl.

  4. Dear @Packmule3,

Thank you for the new thread! To be honest with you I was a bit worried about you.
I am glad you are okay, and it was just a technical matter!

I will comment on the episodes later on!

    Kalimera everyone!

Wow @WE, what a thorough review of the tech aspects of comedy and soju bottles LOL. I have yet to watch Ep 14, but will do so soon.

I actually have to rewatch Ep 13 to refresh my memory.

Episode 13 – I like that SH challenges CCW to think about why they are reincarnated… is to to continue in the hopeless loop of unforgiveness/revenge/punishment or to make a good restart.

Poor girl decides to leave CCW alone until he can pull himself together and is faced with a ‘demented’ possessed Hee Soo who tries to force a gold bangle on her.

I like that just as she consistently did what was right by leaving CCW alone to figure things out, she also rejected the overly expensive gift, and told Hee Soo plainly that they should just remain friends as they were.

LOL the ghosts running away from the white lady ghost. If anyone should be immune to ghostly fears it should be other ghosts!!

What I did find unrealistic about the attempt to push CCW’s car over the cliff was that the 3 ghosts did not all rush out of the car and try to pull it back or push the Badger’s car. In fact in the in between times, before the car was pushed, I expected all of them to not stay seated in the car.

Never handle things like rings where there are slots in the ground for it to fall into.

The ring magic tricks by CCW were quite good. I like that he clarifies that he sees her as she really is and not as Princess Chunhwa, and he seems to have pulled himself back as CCW and not as Poong Baek.

Finally we get their kiss. Took a long time in happening.

  6. @GB, Ah! I forgot the car scene. Yes I think they were a lot passive here. But my mind was at something else. I wonder if it’s not a parody or a reference. I mean Penthouse Season 3. It look like the exact same place. And same situation! A car pushing another car. And also, the character outside trying to push the car.
    https://youtu.be/kC-KErTKmdE?t=44
    Follow up of the scene:
    https://youtu.be/kC-KErTKmdE?t=120
Of course it’s unrealistic too (Season 3 break any law so much that we don’t even think about realism anymore, anyway it’s not the purpose of this drama).

Yes they are all running away from the new scary ghost! 🙂
Notice: They even don’t say to GSH! Then she’s alone trying to stop the ghost when she sees they are all gone. 🙂

During episode 13, we see at start CCW is still in PB mode (with the video on the smartphone), but we understand quickly he changes after, when he scold his ghosts team, like he did at the start of the drama (in a very corporate way).

  7. Annyeong 🌴

@WEnchanteur, you reminded me of a few more things… who can miss that last scene? ***FIRST KISS*** It was a beautiful scene – that aerial shot. so sad about gangster Ma losing the ring oh no! I also forgot about the “new recruit” treatment of Gen Choi. oh my gosh. it’s like “revenge.” haha. so funny. i also forgot about that fake erotic movie and voice work. regarding the new soju bottles, i’ve been noticing that new version. i actually tried it haha. it’s a bit on the stronger side, but perfect with KBBQ LOL. i didn’t realize it has recycling issue though.

@GB i wondered about why the ghosts remained in the car as well. maybe because the real hero of the moment is General CHoi? but later on, Gangter Ma helped stop the Badger’s car from moving. these ghosts are too funny. They’re acting more human than ghost. you’re right about the Kiss – ep 14! worth it, though! right? hahaha soooo sweet!

@WEnchanteur, i actually liked that video that CCW in PB mode made in the beginning of Ep 13. it seems GSH liked it too when she was watching it over again. CCW in aegyo mode haha. too cute.

  8. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @HK_Lady, aside from zaniness of the ghosts screaming in horror at being a car that was being pushed over the cliff (I mean, they’re already dead, why should they worry? LOL) the rest of the series has been logical in it’s own drama-verse.

Episode 14 – this was a hoot! It got me fairly tickled and chuckling long and loud. I think I annoyed my son who shares the study with me.

That double date was to die for LOL… however it was a big mistake in terms of CCW and SH having an audience watching CCW intentionally not help SH in anything at all. @WE is right. Anything and everything that could go wrong, which would require CCW to help SH normally, had to happen at that restaurant.

Conversely evil spirit and evil Dad Police Chief was a little saddening since the killing was carried out directly, this time. Dad does not even seem to notice that his ‘son’ is behaving out of character. Ironically it’s now when Hee Soo is not longer really his son, that they really appear like father and son.

  9. @HK_Lady, I have an easy concentration on this drama at first watching. Maybe because I like!!

Here details I barely had time to notice, but I reviewed this portion at the beginning of episode 14. I was wondering why the order of the scenes was done like that. First we have the famous “I’m going to undress” line (remind me the TKEM famous line “get naked”). For the rhythm of the drama, I thought this would be followed by the rest of the gag: the fake erotic movie and the heroine doing sexy mime, then the neck massage. It would follow the situation without a break. But all this passage is interspersed with the 3 ghosts talking with General Choi.

The way it is built is now clear:
1 – After a tender discussion on the couch, CCW: “I’m going to undress”.
2 – Grandma + General Choi: he is late for the team meeting. (this scene could have taken place before, at a different time, but it allows to follow on…)
3 – Team meeting: the ghosts learn that they will have a problem if the General goes to nirvana. Close-up on his fan, only one line left.
4 – Fake erotic movies (this is a scene that the ghosts imagine, that’s why they say “baby” with different voices, because the gangster calls his fiancée “baby”). Close-up on the fan that wins its last line. End of the erotic scene that ends in bed for the leads. Success! Close-up on the fan that flashes, everything is completed.
5 – The General disappears into the sky to go to nirvana (imagination of the ghosts).
6 – Meeting room. The ghosts understand that they will become wandering ghosts instead of going to nirvana, they panic and want to prevent the relationship of the two leads.
    7 – Sexy mime.
    8 – Neck massage.
9 – GSH goes to thank CCW for the massage but the ghosts arrive like crazy to stop her.
10 – Close-up on General Choi’s fan, the last blue bar climbs up, then immediately decreases (it climbs because GSH had started to say “Thank you”, but decreases because she didn’t have time to say it all).

The reasons for all this muddle in the order of the scenes should now be obvious. The timing at which the ghosts learn the truth about what happens if General Choi completes the fan have to happen at the same time CCW and GSH could have a “moment” together ;-). This forces them to react quickly and disrupt the end of the massage scene. To better surprise the viewer on the general situation, the scene starts on the line of CCW and GSH excited, starting to get erotic ideas. And the plot-twist of the consequences of the departure to Nirvana revealed later. There is only scene 2 that could have possibly been moved before the CCW line.

  10. @GB, for the restaurant scene, I could feel it coming from the start because the other two actors are also fun. First of all, Cheon Ye Ji and Lee Yong Ryeol are shown. And the start is immediately ridiculous in the way they play a love dinner scene. For example, when Ye Ji rolls up a food item and goes to put it in Yong Ryeol’s mouth… she twirls the chopsticks while uttering a long “aaaaaaaaaaah”. 😆 Right after that, it insists heavily on Ye Ji who fails to peel off the two seaweed leaves. The rest is obvious and yet funny. 🙂

  11. And I forgot to say: during Ye Ji and Yong Ryeol part, the dialog lines insist like crazy on things like “thank you”, “you helped me”… It’s on the nose without complex. 😂

  12. @WEnchanteur, thanks for that timeline. as they go from one shot to the next, i can tell, they were gonna stop the lovers in their moment ahhhhhh. so yea. i love how they did this segment. from what’s reality to the ghost’s imaginings and finally, to the STOP NIRVANA scene. oh man. i’m gonna miss this show.

i think not only the ghosts, but us, too – we’re all surprise by this big reveal – nirvana goodbye. i’ll be sad. i was hoping for his happy ending in that island with the ones dear to his heart (that island painting with caricature drawings). but i like how GSH showed her support – for CCW to continue doing magic even without the help of his ghost minions. awwww wonder if they will have a 10 yrs later and they will have kids… right? that will be nice. since his life will be back to normal after Gen Choi hits nirvana. no more shaman life. hmmmm

that restaurant scene is a good one. just bad timing for our CCW and GSH couple. i felt their frustration that they can’t be lovey doves like the other couple. to the point that CCW left and wouldn’t even take the drunk GSH home. love their little facial reactions. haha

  13. @HK_Lady. I will miss this show too. 😭
One could say “it’s useless to make one more ghosts show now”. But in this one show they made best than any other ghost show. Great writing. And I wasn’t expecting that when I watched the first episode. It’s the kind of drama quite discreet. It comes without you aware it’s coming!!! Maybe it needed all these others ghosts show first, so a kind of weird parodic ghost show like that came to life. 🙂

  14. I just watched Episode 15. It was an emotional one…

I didn’t write anything on the previous episodes since you have shared the points I wanted to write antything about.

Tomorrow is the last battle between our good fellas and the bad guy.

I am glad they figured it out that the evil spirit was not sealed.
They don’t know yet who is the man who he has possessed though…
I do hope they will inform Officer Ko. She is the key to inform them his identity.

  15. It was the perfect ending for this amazing show with beautiful messages about life and love.

I really enjoyed it, although it made me emotional at times.
I found the Epilogue so very good as well!

    Tomorrow more…

Hi @Cleo and Everyone, wow, that was a very tightly packed ending episode!!! Even til the end, it managed to include unexpected bits and twists, but Show did a good job of tying everything up, dotting the last ‘i’ and crossing the last ‘t’. 😆

I like that Seol Hae’s character, whether as Princess Chunhwa or SH, remained consistent. She already was a good person in the past life and her prayers actually were answered, even if it took 2,000 years!!!!

I also liked that she always was not just a weak damsel in distress, waiting to be saved, but that she always tried to help herself: she put her police training into practice to break free and fight for herself more than once. Even til the last, she did not back down before the evil spirit. I loved how she told him off that he did not love but had merely a deranged obsession over her LOL. So right.

The unexpected growth of Shaman girl who used to be a mercenary, rude, selfish brat was nice to see. I felt that she reaped what she sowed by being so unpleasant to someone she did not know, only to find out that the lady was to be her mother-in-law. I liked that even she found forgiveness and had a happy ending after accomplishing her shaman work with grandma’s help.

I was very sad that all the senior characters like grandma and the ghosts had to leave. In the end it was really just SH, CCW by himself and General Spirit who stood up against Evil Spirit and won the day. As expected, a sacrifice was necessary to bring about the resolution.

It was so cute how the 3 ghosts returned with reversal in their ages. The maknae girl got her wish to be the oldest member of the family (she always hated being the maknae) and the oldest ghost got to be the youngest nam-doensaeng LOL. I was chuckling at that.

And as fate would have it, all the ghosts and General Spirit continue to be with CCW and SH as the kids at the party. This is really one rare show that gives us the happily-ever-after with kids after the couple gets together. It’s so satisfying to see that there’s a little Cha Ma Ru, a reborn General Spirit, who’s going to serve the Cha family yet again in the current life.

And of course, a humble and more humane CCW who’s doing magic the normal way, is good to see too. He’ll at last hopefully succeed, based on his own hard work and talents, rather than by taking the credit for the tricks done by the ghosts.

So true @Cleo about the message(s) on life and love. The friendships and ties do not cease with death. Good reaps rewards ultimately, and SH really embodied being good without compromising her morals.

Recompense should be made for wrongs done, and even those who were in the wrong can be forgiven. SH was able to separate the good person that was sunbae Hee Soo from his wicked father and still remain friends with him. The evil spirit in HS had however committed murders, so he might have to pay for those crimes anyway.

I liked that we briefly returned to the past life, so that CCW would get the whole picture of what was happening in his current life, and that for his willing sacrifice, he was allowed to continue to live and love.

And among the little things in the mise-en-scène I liked the way the shadow of the dagger in the painting of Grandma Shaman’s worshipping spirit looked like a red, bloody gash. Poor Grandma. Also the lighting of Princess Chun Hwa and CCW where he stood reflecting the light.

It was a much lighter and more satisfying show on the resolution of past life wrongs in the present time, than (I found) Bulgasal or similar shows were, and more important to me at the moment, on top of eliciting all the feels, the suspense, and touching us viewers with poignant moments, it was also actually funny. Brave little show! 😂 🙃 😇

  17. Annyeong 🌼

I loved the ending. Greatly amused at the reincarnation of the ghosts as single siblings in their old age. @GB, good catch on the reversal of the ages. Loved that they showed up to his rescue. then they were reincarnated also as KIDS and specifically as Cha Ma Ru’s friends – love it! i love that time jump, seeing Gen Choi reborn as their little boy. so in away, this is what i wanted – for all of them to be together forever – just how GSH drew all their caricature around the island photo of CCW. perfect! seeing them play in the park was sweetly satisfying 💗 i was happy 😍 funny how CCW noticed what Cha Ma Ru reminds him of and disregarded the notion LOL. they did notice how the friends somehow resembles the ex-employees. soooo cute – adorable kid versions of our ghosts and Gen choi.

Love that CCW continued to do magic minus ghosts and he’s more humane as a boss. i also like the redemptive arc of our shaman girl and how the mom accepted her and became her mom, now that her grandma is gone. poor girl. i also liked that Hee Soo’s self will was stronger than the evil spirit in stopping him from killing GSH. i’m glad the evil spirit left him. and i’m glad the chief dad will get his due.

CCW’s grandpa will really be proud of him – how unselfish and sacrificial he was to the end – he was willing to kill himself in order to kill the evil spirit that took over his body. i’m glad the prayer of Princess Hwa was answered and CCW was able to go back to the present to live and love per @GB

i love this quote from CCW:
no matter… when and how we meet again, I will love her. When she smiles, my heart will skip a beat without knowing why. And eventually, I will realize… She’s my destiny. the reason for my life. ❤

  18. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    Hi @HK_Lady,
I’m very glad that you enjoyed this Show too. Yes, so good, the part you mentioned about Hee Soo’s will being stronger than the evil spirit. His love for her too, was more powerful than the deranged obsession of that evil spirit.

Such a romantic quote! Better even than “Back to the Future” when ML tells his future wife “You are my destiny!” LOL.

  19. Kalimera @GB Unnie and @HK_Lady,

Here is the edit Ella did for FNOS. Guess what? The quote that made the most difference for us, is featured!

    Enjoy!

  20. I watched and liked but lack of time to write, I’ll read yours first. 😉
