Even I had to smile at her silly remark. He just flew across the room to save so why would he want her blown up after that?

#you are my hero from not me

The amusement in his eyes is unmistakable.

  1. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks heaps @pkml3! We’re aiming to rewatch just the fun episodes where the couple become aware that they like each other. Will probably skip a whole bunch later and go in for the end.

I’m up to Episode 18 now with major FFDing of the long rescue, hospital scenes. LOL. We’ll decide which ones to skip later.

  2. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Oh BTW @pkml3, I’ve noticed that this thread and some others fall under the Uncategorized section of the posts, but some of them can actually be categorized since the categories do exist. 🙂

  3. Okay, @GB.

By the way, if you see @agdr03 in any of the threads, kindly tell her I need to reschedule our rewatch. I left a note on our rewatch thread, but just in case, she misses it, I’ll do the rewatch on Fri, 9:30 PM her time (Fri, 5:30 am my time).

    Thanks.

  4. Fixed it. Thanks.

The default setting is “Uncategorized.” I’ve to specify the category/tag so the post will be labeled accordingly.

But I sometimes check off the right category but forget to click update. Like, I distinctively remember creating the “You Are My Hero” category but I must have failed to update the thread because it’s not there. Oh well….

  5. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    @pkml3 OK, I’ll inform @agdr03.

    Thanks for the category!

  6. What platform are you watching this on? I thought it was on Netflix, but don’t see it now.

  7. Thank you for the thread @Packmule! Appreciated.

@Fern it is on Viki. It would be great if you can be there too and keep me awake!! haha

I will find it elsewhere or watch on my Smartphone!

  8. @Kate, so 10pm here? I think the episodes aren’t as long as kdramas, right? I’ve rewatched much of it earlier this year. I liked it very much. It’s easy for me when a drama is on Netflix because I can comment on my laptop whilst watching on the TV, but hey-ho.

10pm will be post-match. It may be do-able. Husband will be in a mood one way or the other. 😂😩

  9. @Fern – yes, 10 pm here. From memory, I don’t think the episodes are too long.

It will be great if you can be with us. Yes, I can imagine that the footie mood stakes are high!

I need to find a platform to watch it now – so I don’t have to use my Smartphone.

  10. My phone doesn’t remember my BoD details for some reason, so I have to re type my name and email with each comment.

  11. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @Kate, I’m lurking here. 12 minutes to go. I’ll grab a drink and come back.

  12. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi, it’s Saturday 6am for me so it should be 10pm UTC (I guess on Friday night?). Perhaps we have the wrong time? Anyway, since I did mention that it would 6am in Singapore, I’ll start the rewatch and if anyone comes along, please join in.

I cannot come online on Sundays at 6am.

    I’ll start!

  13. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I like the exciting start and the anticipated meet-cute.

Mi Ka will look so homely and messy. But at the same time, she was so sincere and cute.

Sidenote: the scenes with guns all look kind of Hollywood-like and I don’t believe it’s a common thing in China.

  14. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

LOL what a way to meet one’s future husband… where one could have been shot by him by a few inches, and then one could have hit one’s head and the bomb in one’s hand could have gone off. What an explosive start to a relationship!

I loved their first conversation. She thought he was lying when Xing Ke Lei said it wouldn’t explode.

When he tells her he’s taking her out of there: “An then what? Blow me up in another place?” LOLOL

When he says she’s a surgeon he says her hands should be steady but she goes all scholarly on him by speaking of the pseudoendocrine and sympathetic nervous system LOLOL.

When he says her suname is unusual, she retorts that, that is her father’s name so what can she do about it.

    Loved that.

  15. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

We get to see what an affectionate friend Mi Ka is with the very sick Xiaoman. The desire to just let go and die to get relief from pain is something quite real for many who are sick and suffering.

  16. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

We come to a great simulation of a hijacking with our police officers looking a menacing as they can LOL. It was a training session for flight attendants?

Next will be a 2 week training course for medical staff.

  17. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I was thinking that the training included putting the medical staff through their paces in physical exercises, but that kind of fitness would need to be continued after training or the doctors/nurses would still not be fit if a disaster struck.

  18. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Because Shu Wen Bo is such a rigid straight arrow, he won’t approve Mi Ka’s taking leave and she has to resort to running away without leave. Best joke is who picks her up. KL is obviously more flexible than WB, so he gives her a ride all the way to the hospital.

But this is a very important 2nd meet-cute. He finds out that she’ serious about the training although she runs off, that the training is just a formality to the doctors, that Shu WB is a good trainer, that she has the wrong impression about him, and he digs out more hearsay information about himself from her.

  19. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

We see a surgical procedure to remove a tumour that is not a normal craniotomy and the patient has a seizure. We might be reminded of this risk in the future when our hero gets to go through some alternative surgical procedure as well.

  20. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    Episode 2
Mi Ka not only has got the chance to learn from the live CCTV aired surgery but gets to pass the medical report and her notes on Xiaoman to Dr Shao who will be her mentor.

He is impressed by her determination and desire to save a life, although he warns her against getting too emotionally attached to her patients. She says “If being numb is professional, then I’m willing to be unprofessional all the time. This is a life. If there is a possibility of hope, she shouldn’t be given up.”

Dr Shao agrees to read the report because although “Getting attached to a patient will impair your rational judgement, … but compared to being numb, the former is better.” And we find that it’s on this premise that Dr Shao continues to root for Mi Ka.

  21. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I notice with amusement that our Chinese (Asian?) belief that one does not take cold stuff during one’s period is depicted so normally … a ‘universal’ truth accepted by all. I wonder if other cultures have this as well.

The kind of 3rd meet-cute of MK and KL is when she discovers that he is none other than Xing KL himself, the leader they had dissed in his car, and finds to her chagrin that she’s got the whole team into trouble.

  22. Hi @GB – have you already started? I am looking forward to starting tomorrow night, Saturday, at 10 pm UK time.

Have we got our wires crossed? I hope not! xxxx

  23. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @Kate, a slight confusion because I’m 8 hours ahead of you.

I realised that the time for the UTC should have been with London Friday night 10pm on top of the list of times, so that no one would be confused. Not to worry. I’ll watch it on Saturday morning my time. I cannot join you on Sunday mornings.

  24. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I like that though KL has to be strict, he is not totally inflexible or uncaring. He still thought of letting MK off instead of firing her, and he gives her the keys to the bathroom so that she can wash up. We know that he already is attracted to her because he smiles to himself after handing her the keys.

  25. I’ll join the watch tomorrow dear @GB! I was confused too. Thanks for setting this up!

  26. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Next, we see that KL wants to spend time with the trainees instead of doing the interview with the television director, Ruan Qing Xia, for the promotional video. This is the opposite of the original arrangement.

So WB gets to meet QX and KL sticks with MK – our couples are in place to be formed.

  27. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

BTW @Kate, will you be able to do the rewatch on your Friday nights?

  28. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

By the middle of Episode 2, KL has caught MK twice when she falls to the floor LOL. She says he should know she didn’t do it on purpose and he quips, ‘Who knows.” LOL.

  29. @GB – yes I can. I’ll let @Fern and @Welmaris know if they watch with me tomorrow night. What a shame we missed the start! I will know in future about the time zone relationship. x

  30. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

The meet-cute of WB and QX is well set up too, in terms of the number of embarrassing things they will face with each other.

    1) WB does not even recognise QX after looking at her profile photo.
    2) He says her photo is photoshopped and she looks beautiful in it LOL that means she’s ugly in real life.
    3) He accidentally spills the contents of her suitcase and proceeds to help repack it, while holding on to her bra LOLOL.
    4) In the suitcase fiasco, the powdered make-up had been ruined.
(We know later that an even more embarrassing situation crops up and he has to give her his T-shirt!)

  31. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Kate, I’ll alert @pkml3 to changing the Notice as well so that we are on the same page LOL.

  32. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I like that although KL hates to do it, he fires MK from the course for running off a second time (again without permission, although he was standing right there for her to ask him)… but that he was himself upset at having to do it. He played an aggressive game of basketball to relieve his feelings and then walked off.

Firing MK according to his promise of only giving her 1 chance, shows that he is a person of his word. It also give MK the opportunity to show that she means what she said in the car with him. She was not there to get a certificate of attendance, but to learn more so that she could save more lives.

She gave more priority to caring for others than to appearances, or being professional or sticking to rules, but she was sincere and was committed to the training. KL had to uphold discipline but at the same time he was humane and flexible. They already had the makings of being a couple who could compromise and accept each other from the start.

  33. Thank you @GB! Sniff. Will miss you tomorrow.

  34. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I’ve come to the end of Episode 2. Read you later tomorrow @Kate!

  35. You’re on @GB!

  36. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Heh @Kate, I’m revising the Notice for the rewatch and hoping it will be clearer and not more foggy!

The other thing I thought about is we might do the threads in the way we had 6 episodes for each thread in the LBFD Rewatch. We might do the same for YAMH if there are not too many comments in each rewatch.

I was re-reading what I wrote and noticed that I also liked that no matter how frustrated KL gets, he does not get violent with people but just plays a violent game of basketball, or does more physical exercise. I recall that WB punched his irritating friend who provoked him. He warned WB that he was the police and would get fired for fighting. A cool head, has our KL. I haven’t looked up BJT about whether he’s the same in real life, but somehow, he seems that way?

  37. Why did I think this kicked off tonight rather than yesterday? @Kate, yes I can rewatch with you tonight if all are willing. Otherwise, we can catch up and rejoin the group next week. Just let me know where I should start.

  38. @Growing Beautifully, I loved your commentary.

KL is strict, but not without reason. Although he is interested in her, he is keeping it professional during training. Also, he would be aware that he wouldn’t want her to like him (hero worship) just because he saved her in the past. –Not a valid event on which to base a relationship. Likewise, he doesn’t want to like her just because she was a memorable rescue to him when he was relatively new to the job. He is a very sensible person. We see later that he doesn’t reveal himself for a very long time when ‘You are my Hero’ can apply to both of them equally.

  39. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thank you @Fern! I’m happy to know I contributed to some reading pleasure 😊 😂.

I’ve just finished watching the last 2 episodes of this series. They gave us quite a large number of flashbacks to our main couple’s interactions. Yes, KL kept his identity a secret for a very long time, which was very wise of him.

I enjoyed the denouement with it’s bookend-ing feature. As they had their first meeting, so too as they met again after 2 years… in a hostage situation LOL.

I was amused that the 2nd lead couple had more kiss scenes that looked even more natural than the 1st lead couple.

I find Sandra Ma Si Chen wonderfully charming. I spend equal parts staring at her as I do staring at BJT. It was not really a series that elicits the same rave reviews as Reset or LBFD, but it was a sweet show, helped along with loads of FFDing LOL.

I hope to join you next week (your Friday night, my Saturday morning) for the Episodes 3 and 4 Rewatch. Enjoy tonight’s rewatch with @Kate!! 😁 😘

  40. Thank you, @GB. I also think Sandra Ma is charming. When she is in camera shot, you can’t help looking at her. She may possibly less of a standard beauty type than others in the same scene, but her charisma stands out.

  41. @Fern – let’s go for a re-watch tonight. I’ll see you there at 10 pm GMT and anyone else who wants to join.

The first 2 episodes are among the best.

[If we are zonked by 11pm our time we can always quickly review energy levels because we will be a small group. If too tired we could always add commentary re Episode 2 during the week and respond to @GB’s commentary.]

  42. You’re on. If by any chance I can’t join, I’ll write in. We may have others in the Americas joining as well. 🤞

  43. Ok – good.

  44. @Kate and @Fern, I also was convinced we were doing this at 10pm GMT Saturday, not Friday, so was surprised to see @GrowingBeautifully’s commentary. The corresponding start time for me is 2pm Saturday, which falls in the middle of a birthday gathering for my sister-in-law. I just found out about it a couple of days ago, as it was supposed to be last week, but her children and grandchildren were sick so it was postponed.

If I can’t sneak in at the appointed time, I’ll read the thread, watch, and comment later.

  45. @Welmaris – thank you for letting us know and looking forward to hearing from you whenever you can!

  46. Hi @Welmaris – look forward to hearing from you when you can manage it!

  47. @Packmule3 – I don’t know if you can see this message but my posts seem to be getting lost. I will be on the re-watch in an hour so am hoping I can get through. Thanks if you see this and there is anything you can do.

  48. Oh good – one got through. No need to find the others.

@Welmaris – looking forward to seeing you or reading you whenever you can manage.

  49. The two posts went to the spam box. Don’t know why. Nothing seems to be wrong with them.

But to be safe, make sure you double check your login name and email. If you use a new one, or even mistype a letter, it goes to the pending inbox.

  50. I am here. Just have to get the drama up on another place and have my phone to hand if this set up doesn’t work.

  51. @Kate, my husband is in the bath, drowning his sorrows in a sense and listening to old rock music very loudly. I’ve warned him that I’m doing this. Lol.

  52. Hello – is anyone starting the re-watch live?

I’ll wait for a few minutes in case anyone can join at this point.

  53. I can’t see you, so will start in a minute.

  54. Hi, Kate. Let me know when you start.

  55. Hi @Fern, I’m here! Let’s start at 22.02!

  56. okay. Started. Creepy face mask with a black background. Grabbing the golden turtles, I guess, in the jewelery store.

  57. He says it’s not complicated and invites her to eat hot pot tonight. gosh. He waits to see her gone. Then disappears in a puff of smoke. Men, eh? Nice that they happened to be near a quickly set up explosives site.

  58. This is so tense… I’d forgotten just how on edge it made you feel.

The whole interaction between them is so well done in this grenade sequence!

You live it with them! And the huge relief…

What a fantastic opening sequence! What a way to meet someone.

  59. Loved the hot pot invitation!! That got her attention…

  60. Yes! I’ve watched it upmteen times and it still gets to me.

  61. @Packmule3 picked up on BJT’s eyes… the way he used his eyes in that whole sequence.

  62. Me too! This is the …..nnnth time!

  63. Clever the way the tension is ramped up with that training exercise! BJT as temporary baddie.

  64. Haha, the cabin crew are fangirling over Xing Kelei.

  65. @Packmule3 – thank you and noted!

  66. yes @Fern… as would I be!

  67. And did you all notice how he gave the signal for the team to get out of the store? That was in case he failed in his mission the other men wouldn’t get hurt in the blast.

He did a good job assessing the situation.

    -get his men out
    -shoot the killer
    -save the last hostage
    -stop bomb from detonating
    -calm the hostage down
    -bring bomb to detonation site

  68. Same.

Haha. Xing Kelei is called Thanos.

  69. @pm3, he did great. Got all of the customers out, first, too.

  70. I usually find hysterical women annoying but the actress was on point here.

And I like that there’s a two year gap before they met again. I’d find it unprofessional if he had searched for her and arranging to meet up with her so soon after this incident.

  71. I thought he was sneaky, too, @Fern. He had two extra phones. No wonder he didn’t mind the cabin crew asking for his weibo account/whatever chat group that was. He gave them the throw-away account that he probably rarely/never checked.

  72. Yes. It would have been very unprofessional. He could be accused of exploitation of her hero worship.

  73. Caught red-handed… the expression on his face when she minimizes the training…!

  74. I’m laughing because she’s dissing Xing Kelei for being irresponsible. He agrees. “I don’t think he’s all that.”

  75. I think that’s why these idol-actors get into trouble with their groupies/fangirls. They don’t maintain the wall.

Overall, I can’t really find much fault with Xing Kelei’s behavior. I guess the Chinese Media had to take care that their police force is portrayed as righteous and upright in dramas. Especially considering the timing. This was filmed pre-Covid but aired during Covid, 2021?

  76. Yes, he is very aware, I think.

Yes, the police force is portrayed very righteously. I don’t mind that because it’s an aspiration.

  77. The operation – accompanied by ‘adventure’ type OST – perfectly mirrors the tension in the opening sequence.

The two worlds of our protagonists…

MK is such an opportunist! She makes things happen – against the grain. In a good way… and sometimes not.

  78. I think that’s the reason I didn’t review this back then. I was reading reports on the police action in China back then (well, I still am), and I was hit by cognitive dissonance.

Anyway, I like that micro-gesture that Xing Kelei did with fingers — tapping them on the wheel — when he heard Mi Ka’s name and realized that she was the “explosives” girl.

  79. Are you two coming to the start of EP 2? Just checking we are in sync. Let me know and I’ll sync with you if not.

  80. He was actually doing something that investigators are experienced at doing:

    planting suggestions,
    asking leading questions,
    reverse psychology, and
    inviting confidences.

He knew that Mi Ka was “open” because he had helped her get a ride.

    hahaha.

  81. XK – master of the micro-gesture @Packmule3 – enjoy these understated touches and story telling.

  82. I like that they are not underplaying the role that exchanges with foreign ideas helps develop new techniques.

  83. Go on ahead, @Kate. I’m only dropping by while waiting for my lasagna to bake. Then it’s dinner time. 🙂

  84. I thought the Chief Neurosurgeon was a hottie. 🙂

I’m glad that he wasn’t really a contender for Mi Ka’s heart.

  85. @Packmule – hadn’t seen that before! Yes.

  86. Insidious and cunning Xing Kelei. Lol.

  87. How did he know to go to the grocery store because Mi Ka was there? Was it because he overheard the girls that they went to buy popsicles?

    Or was this all coincidence?

I like that his first question was, “You don’t recognize me already?”

    Awww, poor baby.

  88. @Packmule3 –I also think he is a hottie…! Ice cool.

    Enjoy your meal.

  89. I wasn’t sure about the grocery store. It was a coincidence, I think.

  90. He opens the door to pull out the souvenir of their meeting – her thank you note and gift – and the memories come flooding back to him.

Nice reveal of what it meant to him, how memorable she was to him.

  91. *opens the drawer*

  92. Another clue to the tender side of XK – taking care of Mi Ka – providing her with access to a shower by asking her to clean it.

Then he helps her with water for her hair wash as she reaches out towards him thinking he is her friend… love all the unexpected ‘getting closer’ moments.

  93. MK is forthright with XK without being disrespectful. XK sneakily gives MK an opportunity to shower whilst also getting her to clean the shower room. Then smiles when he’s alone. She is getting under his skin. He gives up doing an interview to train and helps MK to wash her hair.

  94. I’m at the police equipment promotion part. Very impressive to the viewers.

  95. @Fern, I love that she’s getting under his skin and the way that shows up in the story.

I’m at their first big conflict about her leaving for the second time.

And she is determined to stay.

I’m sure he is both exasperated and attracted in equal measure at that point! What can he do with her?

  96. That was fun! I hope you enjoyed it too @Fern… see you on Friday at 10 pm if you can make it again next week.

I hope your husband is recovering from the disappointment.

  97. He is fair in his punishment; he already warned her. But he doesn’t know or understand her reason – why she is the only person who can be at the hospital to help her friend.

I liked how XK used a real person (MK) to explain to her why the aerial drop wouldn’t pass. It was a good tactic to explain a subtle error that may not have been obvious to an onlooker.

  98. Haha. He’s out of the bath and the house is quiet again. Now he’ll want anyone except France to win. Did you watch any of it?

  99. @Fern – yes – he is fair but she didn’t explain her reasons… misunderstanding. Would he have let her go had he known? I hope he would have.

That training session was very telling wasn’t it!

  100. No I didn’t watch it. I find international football so stressful!! haha

  101. See you Friday, if not before on BoD! Thank you and @packmule3 for the re-watch. I love watching this XK and MK pair. I liked when her friends were mocking them by combining her name and his. Be careful what you say, right?

  102. Yes indeed! haha. That bit struck me too. I love watching this couple also.

Have a great weekend and may see on BoD too.

  103. @Packmule3, my comment didn’t post. You may have to search for it in your spam folder.

  104. @Fern, the last thirteen minutes of the England-France World Cup quarterfinal were heartbreaking for England fans. So close on the two opportunities to make goals!

As for YAMH and other dramas, I get that screenwriters like to use misunderstandings to move plot, but I roll my eyes when just a few words would nip misunderstanding in the bud. MK could have just said, “I am going to consult with a specialist about a critically ill neurology patient. The specialist is from overseas and is only here a limited time, so I have no opportunity other than now.” And for the second instance, “The critically ill neurology patient has been accepted into a treatment program. The specialist wants me to bring her in so we can do a thorough workup and organize her medical history. It needs to be done now so she can receive her treatment ASAP.” I don’t think any of that violates the patient’s privacy. But no. MK sneaks away from the training program and remains mum about her reasons, except to her reporter friend. And I imagine the screenplay would have been boring without the conflicts that arose because MK didn’t handle the situation well.

Being a good-looking man of marriageable age, XK seems tired of having women fawn over him. He appreciates that MK speaks to him without pretense. He also recognizes that she exhibits true bravery, taking action despite her fears.

This show is an easy watch, because it is predictable. Heck, most of the relationships are given away when watching the opening and closing credits. This makes the couples’ journeys a bit less stressful and more entertaining. Yes, we watch hurdles crop up and dire circumstances challenge them, but we know where they’re headed as they overcome these things together.

@Packmule3, I’m with you about watching Wang Yang (Wayne Wang), playing the neurology professor Dr. Shao, from a vantage point on Shallow Island.

  105. Found your missing post, @Welmaris. It was in the trash box. 😡

I often don’t get why the site will redirect a post to go in spam/trash/to be moderated pile, esp. if it’s a post by an old timer here. There’s no rhyme nor reason. And I haven’t fiddled with the site parameters in ages.

I also fished out one of @GB’s posts for Forbidden Marriage.

  106. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thank you @pkml3. I didn’t even check if the post was posted!

  107. @Welmaris – very good point re the crucial points of misunderstanding. In her position most of us would have explained the situation even if we then ran off to get to the hospital!

There is something singularly driven about MK, that said. She lives in her vocational identity and takes decisions without necessarily communicating. One could – pushing this a little – argue that someone as single minded as MK might just behave as she did.

    But I tend to agree!

@Welmaris – I hope you can make the next re-watch on Friday. We’ll see how far we all want to go with this.

  108. @Packmule3, thanks for returning my little lost lamb to the fold.

  109. @Kate, it’s a maybe on my being able to join the rewatch on Friday. I may feel squeezed for time Friday afternoon because early that evening I’ll be joining my hubby and one of our friends for dinner, then we’re going to a holiday concert with Manhattan Transfer backed by our local symphony.

  110. Thanks for letting us know @Welmaris – if you feel inspired do add your thoughts to the conversation later.

Oooh – that brings back memories of ‘Chansons D’Amour’ – sounds like it will be delightful.
