  1. I have to agree about playing with Shinwon’s heart but apparently there’s a lady that will come and she’s going to be with him.

Who are you kissing your Majesty? 🤔

I will attempt to watch, although I’m finding it hard to keep up with the airing shows. It’s time to start JOMO-ing. I feel I’m doing better with the already completed dramas instead. 😅 😆

  3. I’m holding off on watching these 2 episodes until it’s closer to the finale next weekend. That way I can watch those last 2 episodes without having to wait a week. (And I can finish Unlock My Boss before then). Hope to rejoin the discussion then!

  4. I just watched episode 7 and that bath tub kissing scene gave me a sense of deja vu as I remember exactly the same scene in The Red Sleeve. Thankfully this was no as awkward as that one!

  5. Thanks, @Phoenix. I did wonder whether there are references to the Red Sleeves in this drama.

  6. @packmul3 I wanted to thank you too for introducing this fun sageuk to me in your posts. I’m glad this drama is a fusion sageuk (unlike The Red Sleeve), and turns the social mores and rigid class differences on their head. It treats them as fun and the overall tone of the drama is light. I liked the way both So Rang and the king confess in episode 8. If it had been true to historical accuracy, I doubt I would have watched it after being burnt by The Red Sleeve’s ending.
Some scenes do look similar to RS because of the same King-Court Lady angle and maybe the writer got mildly inspired by the RS’ bath kissing scene😛I do think this one was better executed though.

  7. @Phoenix,

I like that this drama doesn’t take the sageuk genre seriously at all.

I couldn’t stop laughing when the King had this “glow” on his face and the Eunuch and adviser noticed it. His skin was literally glowing because he was in love.

Yeah… I know what you mean by Red Sleeves. 🙂 The problem is the same for both: a forbidden marriage. But the problem looks refreshing and relatable because of the modern take of this drama. When she walked out on the King because she doubted his sincerity, that’s what the girl in Red Sleeves should have done…instead of her passive-aggressive stance, e.g., withholding her assurances of love for him.

  8. @packmule3
Lol the scene with that glow on the King’s face cracked me up too, also when the advisor so enthusiastically drew a strategy for the confession complete with a map, with flowers, poems etc..that was so funny🤣🤣..and they were all lurking in the background in that hastily planted field of flowers😛

I had really skimmed through Red Sleeves’ later episodes because I hated the way their relationship progressed, and how they never communicated properly. It became a toxic relationship, and it soured my experience of viewing sageuks. I’m so happy the king and So Rang are honest in this drama, especially So Rang, instead of wasting 7+ episodes on unnecessary angst till one of them dies🙄🙄

  9. Right?

Those are the worst kdramas, I swear.

  10. @Phoenix, I’m with you on the bath tub kissing scene Red Sleeve was the first thing that came to mind!

@Pm3 oh that glow on the King’s face…twice some more! Had me in stitches!

Maybe this drama is as fanfic of what people hope it could have been for Red Sleeve ending… Though in Red Sleeve the King already was in love with her all the way to the end. Tragic is the story…just as it was in history.

I watched episode 8 late last night not long after it came out and the King said “I So-rang you” and when I rewatched that part this afternoon the translation came out as “I adore you”. When I listen to it, it sounds like “So-rang an da”
So-rang asked in response to that phrase “What does it mean?”
The king replied “To me, it means that I love you dearly”
    This is at 40mins.

When I saw that first translation, I thought that it was quite unique that he said that. Too bad they updated the subs to “I adore you”. Honestly, why would she ask what he means if he said it.

I’m also not getting how Shinwon is hurt, at first I thought it was him but then it was his friend, then he became hurt and I thought he died but he didn’t. I should go back and watch again, all these things happening at night is confusing me.

I’m a little sad that the trio who might have done loads of investigation together are now split apart. However I trust that Shin Won will be working on the outside while Lee Heon and So Rang work from inside the palace.

I was worried that Investigator Ja Chun Seok would be lured to the dark side by evil Lady Seo, and am glad that he chose to be loyal to Shin Won, even taking the dart for him. Somehow, he knew that Shin Won was being targeted.

I’m rather tired of the one note villains Minister Jo and Lady Seo. Up to a point, I don’t think that their goals match. Seo wants her daughter to marry Lee Heon but Jo wants to get rid of Lee Heon. I’d like these two have a great falling out.

I feel we’re seeing too little of interesting Gwaeng Yi, our soothsayer/fortune teller of Aedaldang. Maybe with Shin Won on the outside, he and GY might team up to help the investigations.

As this is a light-hearted version of the king falling in love with a commoner, I’m thinking we should not worry too much that So Rang is not supposed to become queen. If she’d been able to keep her true identity, she’d have been entitled to be chosen from among the maidens of the upper class families. Hence, in effect, she should be able to declare and prove whom her father is, and be allowed to marry the king. That of course presupposes that evil step-mother does not kill her first.

It’s good that the king gets a first hand view of how his silly no-marriage decree has impacted the people. Why he cannot just abolish it immediately is beyond me, since there are so many girls vying to be presented as possible brides.

I’d like to see more of some solid investigation taking place, and the baddies not being able to get away with so much arrogance. Their kind of attitude would have had them hanged and quartered in some other sageuk.

My theory on Shin Won’s injury is this:
I think the arrow that hit Shin Won was poisoned in some way – as it hit his right shoulder, the veins of the neck and hand turned dark. Because the king found him, they must have administered an antidote to contain the poison to the hand. His right hand has become paralysed though, with the veins still dark, which is why he told So Rang it is dangerous to stay near him (he can no longer protect her as his sword wielding arom is now immobile).
The poison tipped arrow killed his friend/subordinate as the friend took the arrow right in the middle of his back, which means the poison would have spread to the whole body quickly and couldn’t be contained in one limb.
    This is my theory though😊

  13. @GB

I find the Soothsayer interesting too, he is clearly genuine and not a pretender like So Rang even though he is part of her team of swindlers. I don’t think So Rang knows this, because she thinks he is just like her, with no clairvoyant talents. I wish the Soothsayer ajusshi had got more screen time too because his predictions always come true.

I wish the villains were more interesting too, with some mystery as to who is the mastermind behind the killings. Maybe the writer and director were constrained by the drama length. We might had got more depth of characters if this was a 16-episode drama.

  14. I have to rewatch episode 8 this too because it wasn’t good quality last night. 🙁

But yeah I echo the sentiments about the bad guy and bad girl. Although I’m happy with our couple scenes especially when they just talk/sleep in bed. 😁 Hyeon really needs to assure SoRang that he’s real in everything.

Is SoRang’s dad ok now? I thought that was him with the stepmom when they raided their house?

I was sad to see ShinWon resign too. I like this actor that plays him. He’s good.

I hope to have a royal wedding on this one and a baby too.

    @agdr03
I gather that So Rang’s father is an invalid. Bad step-mother/2nd wife aka Lady Seo, still ‘feeds’ him while carrying on an affair with the bad minister. I thought that when she was feeding him, he was practically unconscious, as she was dribbling food into his mouth, but last episode we see him standing up, propped up by Seo.

Yes, I think @Phoenix is right about the poison. In Shim Won’s case, he pulled out the dart so the poison didn’t keep seeping into him, but his arm was affected and looks paralysed. As for his friend, he took the dart on his back and they didn’t remove it, so he died.

  16. I can’t gush enough about this show. The comedy and the love between the characters. You, ladies, have already noted some of my favorite lines/scenes from these episodes the “adore you” one being a fav but what where he told her there was no other like her before for him, or something to that effect? I thought they did a good job of having him declare just how different he perceives this love between them vs the love he had with the first wife. I saw commentary on here early on about why she was a better match for him, so kudos to the poster(s) for catching it early on and extra points for the writers for verbally stating it for some of us “in the back rows.”

And yes about her father, that was a miraculous propping up based on how he has been pictured/shown to date.

The glow and everyone’s response to it — including his main eunuch’s fawning. lol

Question about the conversation with the King’s grandmother: what answer did So-Rang finally give? I’ve seen flashbacks but missed what she said to the woman directly.

Another question: King has declared his love, but he keeps trying to bed her– which she is resisting. He also didn’t mind being seen in the bathtub. He’s always been a peacock, if a sad and depressed one in my opinion (and i love him for it). But at this point in the drama, are we to believe that he wants to ‘only’ bed and is not thinking about making her a queen? I know in the previews he addresses this but wasn’t clear what we are to think about his intentions at this stage. Does he want her to be a concubine? Really asking, other than making her queen, is there some other relationship status that we think he’s proposing recognizing that he is smitten and in love with her.

Can’t wait to see the bad guys get their comeuppance and I hope it’s really good. They have been running amok, amok, amok, amok, amok!

  17. oh forgot to add re: Red Sleeve….. still NOT OVER IT!!!

  23. Hi. How are you? 😊

I can’t believe FM is ending this week. I’ll miss it yes. I really like that it’s not so formal. You’re right about it being all over the place but yeah I didn’t want to question it anymore. 😄

Looking forward to the ending especially now that the Royal seed has been put in the pot, cooking. 😂
