This Show has 2 episodes dropped a day, I believe, and will reach these episodes soon, therefore I’m leaving a post here, in readiness!

    EPISODE 36
After the tears of the previous episode(s), it’s time for a change in mood. So finally we have an angry XQ, a desperate SY and more things brewing with undergrad Ye Zi who’s still got her eye on Yan Chen.

LOL the scene of SY trying to get advice about how to appease an angry girlfriend from one of the guys. Everyone advises him to apologise…which he did… but he knew that he had not done anything to apologise for. Poor SY.

I always feel it’s good to have a talkative family member who knows what’s happening and can step forward to let cats out of bags. At last XQ gets a fuller picture of what SY has been up against for much of his life.

Come to think of it… their meeting and decision to become close against the wishes of Mother brought lots of grief. I was most displeased that Mother refused to acknowledge XQ’s abilities as a doctor, practically gaslighting her that it was only family connections and the surname Meng that got her the position in the hospital.

Instead of helping her daughter, she uses her power to thwart XQ’s and SY’s efforts to become even more independent and successful away from the Mengs. I was happy that XQ didn’t buckle under the gaslighting but stood firm to declare her self worth. It was great to see Dir Xu being objective and fair towards XQ whom he had misjudged at first.

It would be nice if Dr Yang and family friend Xiao Yi Xiao hit it off and got together. They meet for the first time when Xiao brings XQ back to Yan’s place.

    EPISODES 37 and 38
Looks like we’re set for a happy ending, and perhaps a much better one than might be expected.

  4. Admittedly I was ffing so may have missed it – but how did the brother set up the mom to take responsibility? That would be some next level strategy or was it just allegorical. This drama could have been really good at 20 episodes and tighter – but the last half has been pretty entertaining.

Also – random thought whether cdramas are promoting “noona” romances as one way of dealing with the bride shortage. The doctor whose boyfriend firefighter died expressed regret that she was so focused on age. The younger man/older woman has been a theme in a lot of dramas lately.

    SPOILERS

The getting Mother to take responsibility came from a totally unexpected quarter. It was Zhai Miao who had witnessed the ‘not-rape’ and framing of Yan Chen. She had not intended to release her video of what she witnessed at first, but when charged by SY to do the right thing even when she refused to forgive the Mengs, she negotiated with him that she’d do what was right but only on her terms.

She had 2 terms for Mother … most satisfying for us viewers who are all for taking the consequences of our actions.
    1) To be truly sorry, Mother should kneel and apologise. ZM said although she was too young to be the one to kneel in front of, she represented her parents and brother.
    2) Mother had to turn herself in to the police for corruption/bribery.

As to noona romances, that may well be the case. Media is generally used to slowly shift the social mindset against changes to the way things were always preferred or done.

  6. Thanks @GB. I look forward to a happy ending and wedding.

  7. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @Good Twin, interestingly, the wedding was not at the end, but the end was still good.

  8. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

This is a very good edit of 40 episodes’ worth of couple moments, covering all aspects of their relationship. An amazing effort.

SPOILERS of course unless you’ve watched all 40 episodes or at least until Ep 39.

    EPISODES 39 and 40

    SPOILERS

Yay, I’m happy those couples look to be getting together.

We finally get to see Yan Meng smile, well-rested and warm towards SY. Although I loved his pattern of butterflies in this house, I also like that he’d removed them (a parallel to setting them free) and that he was also free now. In the past he’d felt that what he did was not his choice, but the ‘new’ Yan Cheng chose freely to replace his father as head of the Guokun Group.

That last rescue in the flood was one of those nice extras to give that totally well-rounded finish where everything is resolved. Finally to get acceptance, and to be able to return good for evil, was worth the long slog. SY was the bigger and better person.

I loved the new house and another rooftop garden with an amazing view. What a great spot for the proposal, with the world at their feet. And a beautiful spot to end the series. They start the new day together for a lifetime of tomorrows.

    😀

Did thread-readers here get tired by the time Ep 40 rolled in??

I was looking for a reaction to the “plot turn” for Madame Meng Sr.

Was there anyone who wanted to see her suffer an equal and ‘fair’ consequence for the lifelong ‘dreadful damage’ done to 3 people (XQ / SY / YM)?
It was a brick I had to swallow at the end .. because I was hopping mad, angry each time she’d throw another knife or flaming torch with that pleased sadistic smirk.
In my head I edited it out and tried out various more “just” endings for her.

In K-Drama and C-Drama far more benign parents, who made their kids and partners miserable, were given a treatment that left the viewers balanced and satisfied.
She came across as a pure selfish, self entered, and evil hearted human.
I did not pick up any angle from which I could see her worthy of pity or empathy – in script or in role play.
There are shows where the viewer is willing to accept the ‘forgiveness’ of the ‘villainess / villain’ role ;-p

  11. Also did anyone else keep seeing Jeon Gook Hwan (who plays father / grandfather roles .. often mean – unkind ones) in Chen Jin (Madame Meng’s)

    ;-p

I don’t know how to post pics here .. would have .. They could play siblings.
Not just their physical looks .. but the role she plays here is like an uncanny mirror reflection of the roles he often plays in Kdrama.
