Hidden Love: OST “The Star Thief”

Is this new for Episode 11?

As always, I edited the lyrics from a few music videos to get the flavor of the song. I usually like Peachey Blossom Backup Channel’s subs better than the rest. But for this song, I think Youngblood XII’s version was easier  to understand and straight to the point so I fixed that and edited it.

“The Star Thief”
Sung by Yi Hui

In a corner somewhere,
my universe hides.
No one can guess through the glass.
What planet your name is on.

I’m like a balloon silently becoming lighter.
My worries leave my mind
And quietly float around you
As I get closer to you.

When I slowly come closer to you
A lime-scented breeze blows gently
(I don’t get what lime scent alludes to. I smell lemons and think of Pine-sol.)

My fingertips graze your sleeves
Completing a secret love journey

Could I look at you one more time
To feel my heart stirring for a moment?
How strange is it that my eyes
Keeps circling back to you?

Could I think of you one more time
To feel unstoppable thrill?
Like the first snow waiting for clear skies to come,
I’m waiting for your appearance.

Mmmm…

The fox stuffed toy on my bed
Has hidden a secret for a long time
Never divulged the story of the exchange
Would keep it stored away.

When I slowly come closer to you,
The wind blows gently.
My fingertips graze your cuffs
Completing a secret love journey

Could I look at you one more time
To feel my heart stirring for a moment?
How strange is it that my eyes
Keeps circling back to you?

Could I think of you one more time
To feel unstoppable thrill?
Like the first snow waiting for clear skies to come,
I’m waiting for your appearance.

In my secret universe
You were the one who stole the stars.
(Meaning, her heart)
Every inch of my heart is surrendered to you.
(Hence, he’s a star thief)
My whole world is twinkling your name.
(Or twinkling IN his name. There’s a difference, you know)

Could you write by hand one more time
Just three words that I wish for?
(Meaning, “wo ai ni”)
I leave half of the stars unfolded
(meaning, openly, she’s giving him signals!)
Waiting for you to discover my feelings for you.

Could I see you one more time
So this (display of) bravery isn’t daunted?
(If you would allow me, then)
My hidden longing (for you) will become
Joy that can’t be hidden (anymore).

Ohh…

My comments:

1. The metaphors are all jumbled up in this first stanza. The singer/persona is looking at the skies through a telescope, and saying, You might be just one man, but to me you’re a whole universe. And look at all the stars! My love for you is hidden on one of those planets; you’ll never guess the hiding place.

I’m assuming that by glass, she was using a telescope to look at the stars or looking at the stars through a picture window.

2. I changed the lyrics to “Could I look at you..” in keeping with the title of the episode, “Courage. If I could.” The persona in the song is asking permission to look at him and hoping that he won’t find it strange when she keeps staring at him. She can’t help it.

3. Huh? First snow waiting for clear skies to come?

What does she mean? Snow comes from clouds. Snowflakes are just ice crystals in clouds sticking together and falling to the ground. Ordinarily, the skies have to be cloudy to have snow…except when you’re in a really really cold place (like Antarctica, Siberia, and Wyoming) then you get what’s called “diamond dust.” Clear skies mean “bye-bye, snowflakes, you’ll melt away now.”

Is that what she meant? That she’ll melt like snow when he arrives?

4. Her fingertips grazing his cuffs…secret love journey

This. Same energy as rubbing her face against his.

But since she couldn’t rub faces, she settled for grazing the sleeves instead.

(This is why I dislike translating these songs. Some lines are so cheesy I can feel my brain cells atrophy.)

5. True, the fox plushie hides a story that she’s been keeping from everybody.

Remember that nobody knows except for her and Jiaxu that he went to her school to step in as her brother.

In fact, he was a bit miffed because he thought she’d forgotten all about that.

He was annoyed because he sure didn’t forget all about it.

Remember what I told you in my First Impression. I said that Jiaxu had kept the toy and intended to give it to her when the opportunity arose because it reminded him of that encounter. The way I see it, when Jiaxu met the teacher, he had also seen the resemblance between the teacher and the fox. Sang Zhi had drawn the teacher as a fox.

He and Sang Zhi have that same weird sense of humor. He thought it was hilarious when Sang Zhi wrote down that her brother looked like a dog. He could see the resemblance. He bought her the dog plushie because he was reminded of her essay. The dog was their private joke.

Likewise, the fox stuffed toy was their private joke.

I kept saying that it wasn’t a random gift. He remembered her and, just like the title said, he was waiting, too. The Episode 1 title was “Chapter 1. (I’ve been) Waiting. A secret kept” And there are TWO SIDES of the story.

To me, his insistence is fishy.

a. He threatened to toss it away if she didn’t take it

DJ: If you like this plushie, take it. I was kidding (about calling her “thief”).
SJ: I’m already in 11th grade. I don’t play with plushies anymore.
DJ: I see. I’ll throw it away then. (taking it from her)
SZ: (instantly taking it back) I…I…I can’t play with it for a while.
DJ: (grinning)

He was pleased that his reverse psychology worked on her and that she was keeping the toy.

b. Before leaving for work, he made sure to remind her to take it with her.

DJ: Meimei. If you like it, take it with you.

On the surface, it looked like he was giving her a choice to take it or leave it, because he didn’t care either way. However, if you read between the lines, he really wanted her to take it with her. That’s why he was reminding her about it before he left.

His friends were surprised that he brought it with him in the move. When you move from one dorm to another, you leave the clutter and useless things behind and just bring the essentials to spare yourself the hassle of lugging things around.

Roommate 1: Huh? Duan Jiaxu hasn’t thrown that away. What’s wrong with him?
Roommate 2: It’s just a decoration on his bed. It’s completely useless.

SZ: By the way, Qian Fei. Does Jiaxu have a girlfriend? Did his girlfriend give him this?
Roommate 2: (laughing) He doesn’t have a girlfriend. He’s busy every day and has no time for dating.
Roommate 1: I think it was a prize from some event.
Roommate 2: It was from last semester.
Roommate 1: If you don’t like it, just leave it there.

I pointed out that, after keeping it with him for months, it was strange that he threatened to chuck it simply because she said she didn’t like it. And his friends even found it strange that he kept such a useless thing with him.

c. He mentioned it again in his essay to her.

He defended the toy that he “gave” her (more like imposed on her). I guess, from his  perspective, it wasn’t ugly at all because it was a remembrance of their escapade. He was telling her indirectly, “If you could, please accept this toy as a remembrance of that day when you reappeared.”

Like the texts that he sent her even though he knew her phone was confiscated, he kept this stuffed toy and planned to give it to her when the time was right.

By now, we already know how meticulous the director and screenwriter are with their details. Hidden details like this are called “Easter Eggs.”

6. “Twinkling his name” or “twinkling IN his name.”

“Twinkling his name” is just fancier way of saying that his name is written in the stars and that he’s fated for her.

“Twinking IN his name” means BECAUSE OF HIM, the stars are shining down on her, and her world has become brighter, blah blah.

Either way, they’re cheesy.

7. In the last stanza, the persona acknowledges that she’s being bold saying all these. It takes a lot of courage to come out like that. She hopes that her bravery doesn’t fail her now before her hidden love becomes an open joy.

8. Who’s she calling thief?

The singer is female so I’m assuming that the lyrics are from Sang Zhi’s point-of-view. Just like I said that “Forever Star” is mainly from Duan Jiaxu’s perspective because it was sung by a male singer.

She called him thief for stealing her heart.

But then, Jiaxu also called Sang Zhi a thief back in Episode 1. I say they’re a pair of thieves.

Lol. The cameraman was being obvious here. From the beginning of this cdrama, Jiaxu had to be filmed with the light coming from behind him to make him look like a star.

Next up, the airplane in Episode 12.

5 Comments On “Hidden Love: OST “The Star Thief””

  1. I think it is new from episode 7.

So SZ is the thief who stole DJ, the star. 🥰

    It’s a reverse from DJ’s song. ☺️

Let me get back to this later. Let metas it properly. 😄

  2. Pine-sol. 😂

Spoiler ok. I think it refers to the lime cake that DJ made for Sang Zhi’s birthday. 🤪

Ah, I think the lyrics refers to their second date especially with the lyrics where it says ‘when I slowly come closer to you, the wind blows gently, my fingertips graze your cuffs, completing a secret love journey’.

DJ and SZ looked at each other while smiling in that bus ride. 🥰

    Cheesy songs are good. 🤣

By the way, Sang Yan knew about Duan Jiaxu helping Sang Zhi at school. He didn’t want to go. 😂

  3. The first thing that came to mind when I listen to this song was the 3/4 time (or is it 6/8 time?) the waltz kind of bom cha cha feel to it. It is kinda of soothing with the added gentle voice of the singer. I can imagine Sangzhi, in her giddiness of being in love and skipping to the music in her other hidden galaxy.

    2. Courage would be such a apt word to describe the hope of this song. All the questions, and the hesitant shyness.

    3. The thing with why it’s hard to translate mandarin word for word is that the grammar word order is often opposite of the English one. So the sentence actually means,
“As if waiting for the first snow while there is clear skies,
I wait for you to appear.”

This is like her waiting really long for him to appear because, there is no clouds to produce that first snow in a clear sky as you said.

    4. HAHAHA….you gif got me to burst out laughing. It’s like every touch is electrifying! Even just a little touch of his sleeves is completing the love connection! 😛

    5. I love the “Easter eggs”!!!

Lol…it’s a cheesy song but I guess when you are young, all these heart fluttering things gets magnified and becoming like stars bursting with happiness.

  4. Lol, @Grace.

I was reserving the “I want to rub my face against his face” gif for this sort of moment. It’s so dramatic that it reminded me of my nieces (just two of them) when they were young. They went through that Taylor Swift’s “Teardrops on My Guitar” stage.

“He’s the reason for the teardrops on my guitar
The only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star….”

    –Taylor Swift

Thanks for explaining the line about the first snow. It makes sense. And it fits with the unrequited love motif. If she’s waiting for the “first snow” on a clear sky, then she’s going to wait for a long time. Similarly, if she’s waiting for him to return her feelings, then she’s in for a long wait, too.

Conversely, cloudy skies (usually a metaphor for unhappy times and dark days) will bring him to her. And that fits in well with the story, too. He usually comes to her aid. And she, too, defended him against the psycho in the restaurant.

  5. Yes! so when cloudy skies come, he comes to to her rescue! It makes lots of sense now!
