The Matchmakers: Eps 5 & 6 Open Thread

The thread is open, @agdr03. I think it’s just the two of us here. 🙂

I like their “meet cute.” It’s the Joseon period equivalent of getting mowed down by a chicken delivery motorcyclist, and this time it’s the girl who rescued the guy.

And she saved him again from the runaway white truck of doom galloping horse of doom.

I think this drama is ill-timed, though. It should have been released during spring or summer. I get disoriented when I see the verdant countryside on the screen but the trees outside my windows have all lost their leaves.

Who are they kidding? Her face with her Merchant’s disguise isn’t that much different from her widow’s plain face. (Kinda like Superman still looks like Clark Kent without glasses.) But for the sake of the show, I’m going to go along with the deception.

He must have seen her shoes, too.

I like the choice of camera shot here. It’s a long shot of our couple, and they’re framed by a square frame (a window??). To me, the effect is isolation. Although the couple are surrounded by people, they’re in a world of their own. As for the dancing flame in the foreground, I think it’s symbolic of their growing awareness of each other.

Episodes 3 and 4 were tolerable. The subplots of the unmarried sisters could be less involved and less detailed, in my opinion. I’m not that invested in their love stories since they’re only scripted to drive forward the real romance between the main leads. But I’m hoping that one of the sisters (the haughty, oldest one?) would fall in love with Jungwoo and give SoonDeok a good competition.

Let’s enjoy the show.

  1. 👋🏻

Hahaha the meet cute was funny and the galloping horse too. No one has ever saved Jungwoo like that before. 😂 His face says it all. 😃

I like that he recognised SoonDeok. I thought when he said how could I not recognised you? It had double meaning. ☺️

He also said that he will be the man that will never disappoint her. ☺️

I like the three sisters. I wonder who the eldest will end up with.

    Thanks for the thread. 🙇🏻‍♀️

I believe @Fern is watching this with us. Hopefully she’ll be able to join us here. 😃

  2. I have to catch up, but I’ll be here, thanks, @packmule3 and @agdr03.

  3. I agree. “How could I not recognize you?” has two meanings.

On the logical side, he saw her shoes so he recognized her.
On the emotional side, he recognized her because of his heartstrings for her. Even if she was dressed in a potato sack, he’d recognize her because he had feelings for her.

We know that the youngest will end up with the orabeoni of SoonDeok.
The conflict here? The orabeoni is also after her for writing those books.

The middle one will end up with Sungkyunkwan’s headmaster’s son.
The conflict here has political impact because SoonDeok (or her stand-in) already designated him for her sister-in-law. Her mother-in-law wouldn’t want to release the son/scholar from the engagement because that match was very advantageous for someone like her, who perceived herself as a kingmaker-behind-the-scene.

The oldest one? See here. That’s the reason I think her love interest would be JungWoo himself. She would end up thinking herself in love with Jungwoo.
That way the conflict here will be with SoonDeok. She’ll have to contend with her jealousy and professionalism. She pride herself in arranging the best matches.

The other subplot here is the other widow, SoonDeok’s friend. She’s also SoonDeok’s sister-in-law. She was the wife of the oldest son, the one who was rumored to be a) killed by the mother-in-law (or something) and b) the reason the family got the “memorial gate” or the yeolnyeo award. She was supposedly an exemplary and virtuous wife after her husband’s death.

Anyway, that’s how I would set it up if I were the screenwriter.

  4. Good, @Fern.

I don’t mind if it’s just the three of us. I find it more calming when I don’t have to deal with the cacophony of posters. I easily lose my train of thought when I’ve to respond to a comment or clarify a scene.

  5. I think we will be joined by more. I’m just starting episode 3. All I can say is that at about 4.40 the way Jungwoo flapped his sleeves reminded me of a man-gesture that my friend used to call ‘shooting his cuffs’ — when a suited man throws his forearms forwards to free the sleeves — getting down to business.

  6. Episode 3: Jungwoo is pretty in pink.
He was finally told how ‘interesting’ it is that he rides a donkey rather than a horse. Donkeys and mules are more sure-footed than horses over uneven ground. Is he afraid of horses as he is of dogs?

Gosh, the countryside is lush there in mid-spring. Looks more like summer, but it’s supposed to be before May. I loved the path to the 3 sister’s house.

The blind mother asks Soon Deok if she thinks she is Ssangyeonsulsa, a legendary goddess of matchmaking. She also asks why Soon Deok is hiding her identity and doing the ‘lowly work of a matchmaker’. Soon Deok can’t answer, but this perceptive woman finds an answer in the lack of words. I think it’s that Soon Deok loved being married so much, she can’t help but want to help others to the same state.

I’m afraid that Soon Deok will take the Ssangyeonsulsa identity too literally and commit hubris. @packmule3, if your theories are correct, she will make matches that won’t work for the reasons you gave and will suffer the consequences.

I love that the Crown Prince corrects Jung Woo’s term, ignorant people saying, “The will of the people is said to be the will of Heaven…Everyone wants a good spouse, whether it be me or the people.”

The intro to the ending song at 107.45 is Very similar to the intro to the Beatles song ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’.

  7. I should have put ignorant people in quotes or added a comma. Oh, well.

I also appreciated the falling kiss trope between Soon Deok’s brother and the youngest sister. Ah, he’s a sly one, though. Not easily fooled.

  8. –Or more like the beginning of Dear Prudence, also by the Beatles.

I am really enjoying this screenplay. The actors addressing the camera directly at the beginning of each episode is a good introduction to their opinions.

I like that the king isn’t in opposition to the left minister’s party but to the left minister himself. And if you think the left minister is bad, his wife is even worse. This actress plays villains very well.

  9. Soondeuk versus the oldest sister for JungWoo. I’d like that. 👍🏻

The love lines are established now except for the oldest sister so you might be right. 😃

What’s with SoonDeuk leaning forward to JungWoo like that? Was she going to whisper something? I was thinking what she wanted to do. 🤔

I love the lanterns and how JungWoo flew his one beside SoonDeuk’s one. 🥰

The interview was funny, what with they all want ‘young and pretty’ for their wife. 😂
