I’m going to jump to Ep 22 because I’m bound to forget this.
There was a scene after Nai picked her up from the reunion of her gamers’ guild. One of the Three Witches tried to create a scandal by saying, that she had numerous online husbands, that she had a reputation of a homewrecker and a flirt, blah blah blah. Nai silenced her with, “As long as she’s willing to be with me, none of that matters to me.”
On the drive home, Weiwei asked him about it:
WW: I’ve always known you’re a master at infuriating people, but your game face is even more impressive. QQ was trying to provoke suspicion, so you’d dump me. I didn’t expect you to act like you’d never be mad at me, even if I were unfaithful. No wonder you’re such a master. Ah! Would you really be okay with it if I were unfaithful?
XN: Yes.
WW: I thought you’d kill the guy.
XN: Well, if you’re unfaithful, I’ll restore your faith. If you lose all faith, I’ll convert you again.
Simply said, he assumes the responsibility for her losing her feelings for him and he’ll try to gain them back. It would be his fault if she was unfaithful. To me, the underlying assumption here is that she isn’t the fickle sort of girl. So, if she becomes adulterous, then he must have done something (or nothing, that is, he neglected her) to make her look at someone else for love. The blame is his so the rectification is his as well.
I like the subs of Netflix because it was clear and direct. However, I enjoyed the subs on Kissasian. I suspect their subbed version of the dialogue came closest to how Nai said it in Chinese in the romcom.
WW: I always knew that you were a master at pissing people off but I never thought your acting skills could be so convincing. QQ wanted to drive a wedge between us so you’d dump me. But then you acted as if even if I had an affair, you would have no regrets. A master’s a master! If my apricot tree leans over the wall you really wouldn’t mind?
XN: I wouldn’t mind.
WW: I thought you’d cut my branches.
XN: At most, if you leaned an inch over the wall, I’d move the wall over an itch. If you leaned a foot over, I’d move ten feet over.

I thought that image of a leaning tree with low-hanging branches and a patient gardener willing to move the wall rather than trim the tree was very romantic. It sounded tender and protective despite everything else that’s going wrong. And it reflects the way Nai treats Weiwei. He cherishes her.
Anyway, if there’s a Chinese speaker here who wants to enlighten us of the actual conversation, we’re all ears. 🙂

I have to say that this is my favourite of all Xiao Nai’s dialogues. There’s something about it that gives you faith and hope that everything will be ok no matter what because he will do everything in his power to never lose WeiWei.
I don’t think I’ve heard it ever at all in the romantic movies I’ve seen, not in this phrasing. I just love it.

It’s not just about infidelity. To me, infidelity is the biggest crime in a marital relationship. But if Nai can forgive even that, then he can surely accept her other lesser mistakes. And isn’t that a nice feeling to have? It’s like him saying, “Go ahead and do your worst. I’ll love you even more.”

not sure either if that’s the literal translation but that’s more in keeping with a Chinese dialogue, not an English one (if you know what I mean). We don’t refer to apricots in idioms. We use apples and oranges and bananas.
And we don’t use poetic images. We’re more direct like Jerry Maguire’s “You complete me.” and “You had me at hello.” hahaha.
But it is romantic, right? That writer did good but Yang Yang made it swoony. I’d probably gag if another actor said that. I couldn’t imagine Tom Cruise saying that, even when he was in his 20s. Not Leonardo dicaprio. And certainly NOT George Clooney. lol.
Hahaha…just tried to imagine George Clooney saying that apricot tree dialogue🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Besides after all the “OMG! Did he actually say that?!!” moments (like when he said, “She put her trust in the wrong guy.” and “When we never in this kind of relationship?”), this seems par for the course for the character Xiao Nai. hahah

I can’t say “I CANNOT forgive and forget” because I don’t know how my brain and heart will reconcile infidelity. My brain will probably be adamant about walking away, but my heart will go “Lalalalala. sorry. can’t hear you. lalalala. What did you say??”

I don’t know. There’s something about infidelity that refuses to agree with me. That said I admire those who survive it. I just have this feeling that if ever I will be confronted with it, I will not stay. This is just me.

Same here. Infidelity is a dealbreaker, not just a heartbreaker.
But I’ve seen so many women, smart and strong women, who had a choice to walk out but didn’t. When pressed why not, they essentially answered that love forgives. 🤷♀️ So 🤔 I don’t know. I used to say, without reservation, that I’d walk away.
True, love definitely forgives and I know a few women too whose smart and brave and they didn’t leave. I really don’t know. Hopefully I won’t ever get to find out whether I’d stay or not. 🙏🤞🏻😂

They subbed it differently on Netflix. And although the words meant the same thing, they weren’t as romantic and heart-fluttering as the image of the apricot tree leaning over a few inches, and Nai moving the wall for her.
