Count Your Lucky Stars: Jerry Yan’s Open Thread

For @Agdr03, @Fern, and CYLS viewers,

I’m listing all CYLS episodes from Yoyo English Channel here for easy access.  There are 34 episodes in total. Yoyo Channel has 8 episodes subbed while Viki has only 6 subbed. There’s no rush. The subs will take forever, and I’ll be dead by then.

This is Jerry Yan from Meteor Garden (2001). Gosh! There might even be lurkers here who were just “twinkles in their fathers’ eyes” back in 2001.

Here are more goodies from colorfuldreamsforever’s tumblr.

Mind that very dramatic, very moving, very nuanced, and very gripping chest pump.

If he didn’t put his hand over the scar, nobody would have noticed it.

Go ahead and chat away, my friends! I’ll join you later.

  1. Thank you for this Queen! 🍪🍪🍪

I’m on episode 5 and I feel Jerry doesn’t want his fortune/luck back, he wants XY to keep having it.

Yum, my breakfast is ready. 😂

  2. Oh that look in episode 5 from 40:50, he said yes to the kiss with XY but he was only teasing her. ☺️

  3. I’m watching ep. 4 and almost getting whiplash from the rapid changes in the chain of events. And it is generous to call the tenuous connection between depicted events a chain.

  4. Agree @Welmaris 😂

This is one of those cdramas that can be forgotten straight away except for the attraction of Jerry Yan. 😊

  5. When Jerry said to XY that he’d like to stay at her place for the meantime and she says my roommate doesn’t like strangers but the roommate comes out all dressed saying ‘what are you talking about? Of course Jerry can stay’. That’s funny! 😂

  6. I liked the bit in the hospital when her parents ask, how long have you been dating and Jerry says 3 years without blinking.

@Welmaris, yes, this is easy enough to digest with breakfast which is happening as I write.

@packmule3, why die when you can have your daily Jerry Yan for 4 more weeks? Thank you for the links and the pics. I am keeping track of how many tub shots you post. You are doing well – nearly 1 for each episode available so far if we count your intro clickbait.

@agdr03, the wet Jerry was nice, too.

  7. Oh yeah the parents visiting him out of the blue and 3 years together! 😂

    Wait what? A wet Jerry? 😈🤣 Can’t wait! Thanks @Fern! 😘

  8. @agdr03, you’ve seen it. Ep 4, about 23.20. Maybe have another look.😈😊

  9. Oh I remember! It’s when he fell in the swimming pool 😄

I did see a little bit of chest there too 😈😂

  10. Oh, you were looking at his chest?

  11. Well when he came out of the pool I saw it then. He did sprawl on the side too. Where were you looking at? 😉🤣

  12. No comment.

  13. Awww Jerry cleaned the whole apartment of XY and he’s even cooking now. 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ Points for him!!! ☺️

  14. Ya! 😂 I’m going to watch that scene again so I can comment. 😂

  15. Remember the rules that Daly gave XY? Everything must be in it’s right place and not moved? Would this be incompatibility or a complementary trait in their personalities?

  16. I’d forgotten about the rules 😬 but I’d take it as a complimentary trait for now because I don’t like girls whose messy at home 😁 Jerry’s apartment was very neat, right?

  17. I wish to remain a lurker but TKEM (Lee Minho) and Jerry are hard to ignore. Thanks for this thread!

Jerry started with a nasty behavior but slowly converting to be a lovable companion and mentor to XY. It’s nice to see him smiling more often and how he can get along with a lesser bossy attitude to Ruru and XY. When I watch Jerry’s every expressions, I don’t need to look at his physique, I’m fine. The rest is just a bonus.

I wonder why XY’s Dad likes him, they seem comfortable having a discussion whenever they bump into each other. Jerry with XY’s parents is nice and touching to watch.

I want to disregard why Jerry and XY’s outfit were not so fashionable compare to those whom they’re working. Both of them were always seen in almost same clothes! But watching the CYLS is all for Jerry!

  18. @Eureka, I know what you mean about the clothes. What a difference from kdramas where the characters, even poor ones, have different winter coats every two episodes and designer clothes the rest of the time! I think some of the same things are meant to show that it happens the same day, but other times, that they either can’t afford a large wardrobe or that their own clothes are not a priority.

  19. Hahaha. I know you and men who cook in the kitchen. Remember “Love Alert” when the guy cooked and CLEANED afterwards? 🥰 Swoon!

  20. What chest? What episode? Was there another bare chest episode? 😂

How many nekkid scenes were included in his contract?

  21. Yes! I remember they went camping and he cooked and cleaned up afterwards. 🥰 my kind of guy. ☺️

Ok! I just saw it, episode 4 from 22:50 onwards. I saw waist, chest and is that a speed hump? @Fern? 🤣😈

What do you see Queen? Enjoy! 😂

    I’m going to sleep 😆

  22. I could say that Jerry has a nice profile.

  23. In every Hana Yori Dango’s adaptation, I prefered the second lead or the third : Vic Zhou in Meteor Garden, Shun Oguri in Hana Yori Dango, Kim Bum in Boys over Flowers. In the 2018, I really liked Dylan Wang in the main role. So I guess I never was a big fan of Jerry Yan.

Shen Yue can’t run away from Dao Ming Si :p

  24. @Sayaris! I liked Dao Ming Si with Shancai too! 🥰

  25. Oh dear! I just saw the end credits for CYLS in episode 9 and I think Jerry just hooked me line and sinker. 😱😍😂

I’ve never bothered watching the end bits except today. 😆

@Fern, I’m ready to join you now. 🥰

  26. What did he do? 😂😂

  27. 😂 Hmm things like carry XY, block her from paparazzis, hug her when she’s crying, lift off a strand of hair while she’s sleeping, give her a back hug, take her away from the club because she’s drunk, be cute, be handsome and really look like a man! 🥰

  28. 😂 The writer is throwing Jerry at the viewers, hoping we’ll just stay to watch the Cdrama for him. Never mind the story, it’s a Jerry-fest!!

I read that there were some grumblings from the netizens about the age difference between the actors. Is it too obvious? I thought XY was a bit immature but I didn’t attribute that to her age, but to her newness to the job. They have to make Jerry act like boyfriend material though.

  29. Yes it’s all about the Jerry-fest. You’re so correct in using his name because it really is because of Jerry Yan and not Lu Zhingsheng that made me want to stay and watch him. ☺️ So I am enjoying it.

Maybe people are just too mindful of their age in real life and the characters itself and it just happens that he is definitely more older than XY. It’s not the first time couples get together with this age difference. It’s just a show, I can’t see them getting together for real. 😁

Well the boyfriend material will need to come soon because he got slapped today. He said in front of the other Lu guy that XY will do anything to kiss him. 😏 Slap he deserves.

  30. His character’s age may have been said in the dorama, but not translated. I would guess that the age of his character is supposed to be somewhere between 6 – 10 years older than XY, judging on the look of the actor portraying him at the time he designed Niki, so he would be in his 30s present time, rather than 40s as in real life.

I’m not usually bothered by age differences, myself, unless the older person is taking undue advantage. I wouldn’t like it if the older one is leaving a good marriage for someone a generation below his or her spouse, for example. Jerry, in this character, isn’t in a relationship. The model even describes him as celibate, right?

Yes, he totally deserved the slap. WTH was he thinking? He had better put on his great big apology boots and find her and repair the damage.

  31. That’s what I want to see too @Fern, his great and humble apology. I hope it’s humble. 😄

  32. I was going to be one of those people complaining about the 20-year difference between the ages of the ML and FL until I reminded myself that they’re actors playing roles. It is their job to portray something they’re not.

In real life such an age difference can be present in a successful marriage, although there still may be problems. My mother-in-law was 18 years younger than my father-in-law. Theirs was an arranged marriage: they met once to approve of each other before they wed. They were together many years, raised nine children, and ran a successful restaurant. But because she was so much younger than her husband, and on average women’s lifespan is longer than men’s, my MIL is spending more than two decades at the end of her life as a widow, my FIL having passed away in 1998 at the age of 88.

  33. The writing in this drama is uneven. The characters don’t go through development arcs, they make leaps. Jerry went from scowling to smiling when he’s with XY. The only clue we have as to why is the amount of time XY seems to have spent with him in the hospital and following his release: at first despite his objections, then because he guilted her into it. By ep. 8 their mannerisms indicate a level of comfort in each other’s presence: casual touching, eye contact, smiling. But these things are shown to be happening without us seeing a transition. What did XY think the first time Jerry smiled at her? We’re not given that step in their relationship.

  34. @Welmaris, I agree that we don’t really know why they are now so comfortable with each other. Jerry has gone from treating XY like a serf to treating her like a chummy little sister. XY has gone from acting entitled to acknowledging that she knows very little about the workings of the industry. I’m at ep. 9 and I think that the leap from like to love is approaching.

The only clues I have so far is that he lent her his books and asked for her feedback on a draft in one of the early episodes and she was grateful. She wants him to have his ‘luck’ back but that seems to be the only reason she would kiss him and he knows this. He got used to her presence in the hospital and so was unwilling to be discharged. He became protective of her the three times she passed out due to low blood sugar. He is still mentoring her in the ways of the workplace, industry and more specifically as a designer even though he is no longer her boss. XY recognises this and is grateful. She is willing to take care of him to an extent because she believes she is responsible for him. Could it be simply cumulative exposure to one another?

One thing we don’t know for certain. The morning after they both got drunk on the rooftop, he asked her if she remembered anything they talked about. She said no, and we’re only aware of what passed between them before the kiss, but not after. It may be important?

I don’t like that he is taking advantage of her belief in her role in his bad luck. He does try to convince her that hard work is more important than luck, but she doesn’t believe him and her housemate is not helpful with her fortunetelling hobby.

  35. I meant to write, does anyone else get a ‘Pygmalion’ feel from the show so far?

  36. @Fern, I don’t know Pygmalion as well, but have watched My Fair Lady multiple times, and that was based on Pygmalion…so, yes, I think I do see similarities. But XY jumped suddenly from wanting retribution for Jerry’s imperious manner to being grateful for the support he gives her from time to time. We didn’t get much of her declaring, in effect, “Just you wayte ‘enry ‘iggins, just you wayte!”

  37. Howdy! Here’s an interview of Jerry that I found today. 😊

    https://www.instagram.com/tv/CDpAY8vpuSQ/?igshid=1s2593k7mf1fl

  38. Thanks for sharing, @agdr03. So he wasn’t prepared for the slap? Was it Shenyue who slapped him?

He sounds like a diplomatic guy, praising his younger costar for being a natural actress.

As to be expected, there are delusional fans commenting that they want the two actors to marry. 🤮 There’s a 20 year age disparity. He’s done a lot of hard living and I’m sure he’s ready to settle down and have a family. Meanwhile the actress is just beginning her career. I doubt they’re on the same page right now. If he can wait, he should look her up again when she’s in her late 20s, early 30s. 😂

  39. Yeah from this interview he’s a genuinely nice guy who appreciates what the younger actors have to offer. It’s nice to see him praise Shen Yue. 😊

The director must have wanted a genuine reaction too so his face must have been really red from the slap. ☺️ It’s on episode 9, there’s that animosity towards the other Lu guy which may has a little bit of jealousy too? @Fern and @Welmaris can correct me. So he said to him XY will do anything to kiss him. 😬

Oh dear, shipping them for real? I think there will always be those fans that will not care for factors like career as you said. 😂 But personally I’m not fussed with age difference in real life, it’s always up to the couple and no one else.

I personally want Jerry to settle down soon but that’s just me. He’s genes need to be passed on. 😁

  40. Rewatching ep. 2, I came across “Working Habits of Chief Editor Lu” and here there are:

A cup of iced Americano without sugar every morning.

Don’t bring anything with an unusual smell to the office.

Every object has its own place. Don’t move anything.

After lunch, he likes to have a cup of hot…(and that’s as far as we get).

I understand now why LXC demanded that the stinky flowers be removed from his hospital room, kicking at the bouquet. I believe they were lilies, and those can be overbearingly fragrant.

  41. Spoiler alert:

Yes, @agdr03. There is jealousy and anger from both men. Yan Zhi (YZ) is shocked to see Jerry at XY’s flat. One thing leads to the next, but the necklace is the main trigger. Jerry thinks of it as his personal design and memento mori while YZ thinks of his as a precious collaboration with XY and something that puts him above Jerry vis-a-vis XY. (TBH, I don’t think YZ knows the history of the ring.)

Jerry loses his cool faster than YZ, asking for the other necklace. YZ deliberately provokes Jerry’s jealousy by mentioning XY’s participation in making it. Jerry goes way overboard with his statement about XY wanting to kiss. Of course this wounds XY way more than it hurts YZ.

I was thinking about how differently Tendo would have reacted in the ML role.

  42. @Welmaris, yes, those working habits. He carries them right across to XY’s flat, too. I agree, lilies are lovely, but not appropriate in a hotel room. (I don’t know about flower customs in China, but in the west they can be funereal.) However, I mostly think he was applying the stink to Yan Zhi’s presence and it seemed quite childish.

No, you are correct about the behaviour shift. There was a swift transition in their attitudes during the latter hospital stay. I can only think that a scene was edited poorly. I was more surprised at Jerry’s transition – XY was already starting to acknowledge that the work he threw at her was doing her good before she quit.

  43. @agdr03, thank you for the interview video. I am wondering who is the Big S Jerry refers to. Funny nickname. I shall have to google.

  44. @ Fern, if Tendo saw the necklace my guess is that he will remain cool as if no reaction but his eyebrow speaks first. There’s a camera close up on his face, Tendo will look at YZ then to XY and will say ” What a waste of time collaborating with her!”, his eyes remain with XY and wiill say ” baka (idiot)” and finally walk away.

  45. @Eureka 😂 we know Tendo too well 😂👍🏻

  46. @Welmaris! Thank you for putting those rules by Jerry here. ☺️

Yes, there seems to be a missing link somewhere because all of a sudden they are more comfortable.

@Fern, thank you for making those points for me about Jerry’s jealousy. Yes it started with the ring and trigged for the worse when YZ said it’s XY and his collaboration together. 😬 He just got so confrontational and really he had no right at all. 😏

  47. @Fern, I’m not sure who Big S is too. Shen Yue and Big S. Maybe the original Shancai with Jerry in Meteor Garden which is Barbie Hsu? I’m not sure 😊

  48. @agdr03, I agree that Jerry’s genes should multiply!

@Sayaris, Vic Zhou in the original MG is more handsome than Jerry, it’s just that Jerry stands out more!

@Welmaris, thanks for enumerating Jerry’s rules. It’s been a long time since I’ve watch cdrama and you’re right about this being uneven and more. I just close my eyes since this is Jerry-fest. I’ve tried watching some raw videos and I could even guess what’s going on trough their expressions and turn of events.

  49. “Big S” is Barbie Hsu, the original Shancai. I just checked wiki. “Big S” is listed under her nickname. 😂 Maybe because Hsu sounds like “su”? and she’s the tiniest of them all but bosses them around so she’s “big”?

  50. My guess is correct! Thanks Queen 😊

I was trying to compare in my head whose taller between Shen Yue and Barbie Hsu but I can’t tell. 😁

  51. Or Shancai for the S ☺️ But the Big that you said sounds right 😄

  52. No, I was wrong. 😂 I googled it and I ended up in Wikipedia again.

“Hsu was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 6 October 1976. She was the second of three sisters, with the eldest being Hsu Si-hsien, and the youngest sister being Dee Hsu.

From 1994 to 2001, she was a member of the pop duo ASOS (originally called SOS for “Sisters of Shu”, the name was changed to ASOS for legal reasons) with her youngest sister Dee Hsu. As such, Hsu is also known by her nickname “Big S” (while Dee Hsu is nicknamed “Little S”) although she was the middle child in the family.”

  53. 😂 We’re both corrected now. 😁 thanks!

Her elder sister starred in Meteor Garden 2018 with Shen Yue. She was Dao Ming Si’s eldest sister. ☺️

  54. 😂😂 Good one, Eureka!

Tendo walks away but he’ll think of a plan to get back at YZ and outdo their collaboration. Like, work with XY for a Paris fashion show. 😈🤪

  55. Yes @pm3 I’m sure Tendo will find a way!Subtle but grand!

As I’m watching CYLS, I couldn’t help it but Tendo gets in the way (sometimes), probably because I’m thinking of BOD’s reaction-Team Tendo vs. Team Jerry. I couldn’t react to the other thread since CYLS is not even halfway, I’m waiting if Jerry has major defense vs. Team Tendo!

  56. Sorry. In my 4.19 response, I meant to write hospital room, not hotel. 🤦‍♀️

@Eureka, good Tendo scenario! Yes, after saying ‘Baka’ to XY, he would walk away. Right into ‘his’ bedroom and shut the door. And yes, he does get in the way a bit as he stays on my mind even as I watch Jerry. @packmule3, I agree that he would collaborate on something more significant to XY. Paris sounds about right – or Milan.

I like that Lu Ren is protecting and secretly mentoring Jerry subtly from afar.

  57. @Welmaris, I think one XY’s ‘just you wayte’ moments was the quick fantasy shot of her bashing something with a spade in a wildflower field. If I could name a moment when the behaviour jumped, it might be just before, or when XY’s parents came to the hospital. We didn’t see all of their conversation, but it seemed to me that Jerry was grateful to have some regular people who didn’t know him to converse with.

I thought it was interesting that Jerry seemed more upset with being discharged from the hospital than being superseded at work. (Cue ‘I’ve Grown Accustomed to her Face’)

  58. Lol. Just comment away, Eureka. This is our light-hearted and playful analysis of these dramas. I don’t know about you, but it’s the kind of distraction I need from the current events.

I’ve “Flower of Evil” anyway to dissect with @GB for serious content anyway.

  59. Thanks @pm3!Same here, recent happenings are getting more and more serious! This blog is a kind of vitamins too like Jerry! That day you mentioned him came as a surprise and this distraction is somehow working on me.

    Arigatou!

  60. For one twitchy minute I thought that Ep. 10 was subbed on YouTube. There was one, but it must have been subbed by machine, because it made NO sense at all. Harrumph.

  61. @Fern, I watched ep 9 a couple days ago on Eng Sub, then rewatched it yesterday on Viki. The subtitling percentage on Viki still wasn’t at 100%, and what subtitles were there were occasionally incomprehensible. At this rate, I don’t expect to watch ep 10-12 until a week after they’re released. But I must cultivate an attitude of gratitude, since I’m depending on others’ hard work in order to watch this drama with any measure of understanding.

  62. Something that has been bothering me…

In the flat XY and Ruru share, there’s a big cat tree. A pooper scooper is hanging on the wall next to it. Also on the wall is a photo of a Siamese cat. So why aren’t we seeing the cat? In real life, any self-respecting housecat would have challenged Jerry for dominance of the couch.

  63. @Welmaris, yes, the cat would either be all over him, or sulking. Maybe it’s sulking over at the neighbour’s. Once when I cat-sat, the cat stayed under the owner’s blanket for days. I only saw it as a bump, but they said it was normal. Once it got used to me it was very friendly.

Yes, I’m grateful for subbing, too. But the subs on the one I saw today must have been automated — they were so strange.

  64. @Welmaris, proper subs at last. I can have my breakfast watch tomorrow.

  65. How was it @Fern? Thanks for the heads up. I saw an Instagram post where XY finally kissed Jerry’s supposed ‘good luck’ back to him.

  66. Spoiler alert:

@agdr03, Oh, not yet, not yet. It took most of ep. 10 for our man to apologise. I think the post you saw was from previews or some of the eps that aren’t yet subbed. It will happen – it must, right? Whether or not we and @pm3 will see more abs is less certain. It’s a good episode once you get past the first 2 minutes of them staring into space silently.

Must go take daughter to training. I hope that you all have a lovely day and evening.

  67. Thanks @Fern! You and your daughter have a good day too.

I watched it and is that even an apology? He said it while she was drunk. 🙅🏻‍♀️ He could have easily done it while he went to XY’s house with his free lunch from her parents. 😂 I was waiting for it then but no.

Anyway I think I’m good without seeing anymore of his abs as I can just look at his face and that mole of his and I’ll be happy. 😆

  68. Thanks. She did well in her races on Sunday, so is happy to be training for the next competition. I liked the video he was taking of her as she tried to cook and their interactions. It looks like back to ‘normal’.

Yes, it’s an apology, although she may not remember it. I love her parents, btw. They are cute and not foolish.

I am also liking the model and Mu Yang – I think they have potential. His story about Jerry was interesting.

  69. @Fern, well done by your daughter 👍🏻😊

Yeah, XY’s parents are great. No questions asked, just feed the guest. 😁

Yup, it looks like there’s a love line with Mu Yang and Jerry’s best friend from way back.

    I’ll watch episode 11 today. 😊

  70. I like the developments in Episodes 10 and and 11, it’s like a “new normal” for lead actors, Mu Yang and YZ’s finally admitted the story of his dress design in the competition. Yes, @agdr03 Jerry’s face alone is enough (happy happy happy)! But just like Mu Yang said, Jerry had changed into an unlikable person after the car accident, so even murmuring a simple apology was not that easy for him.

@fern I like XY’s parents too. When the dad was talking to Jerry about her job and that they would be happy if XY will just work with ordinary people, etc. Simple but happy dream for XY. Jerry’s opinions were genuine whenever he converse with XY’s parents but like the opposite with XY. He sounds like an ideal son-in-law.

  71. Did you like this scene below? ☺️ I thought the dialogue was perfect and Jerry looked 🥰

    https://youtu.be/agotipddpbQ

  72. @Eureka, did you noticed Jerry changing the topic of his discussion with her parents? They talked about her life as a designer but he said her parents want her to get married. 😂 this guy!

  73. The drama seems to be getting interesting. Will catch up this weekend.

  74. Do you want to celebrate Jerry’s character‘s birthday in CYLS here? 😁 Apparently he hasn’t celebrated his birthday since his Mom died which is about 10 years.

  75. When is his birthday? 🎁 Sure. Why not? 😂

  76. Fangirls! 😂

XY saw the date but she didn’t say out loud. 🤣 We have to wait for episode 12. 😂

  77. 👍 okay. Just give me a couple of days heads-up.

  78. I will! 😉

  79. Of course! They started to get a bit intimate in the you tube video link that you sent!😍😘☺️
It will be fun to celebrate Jerry’s b-day! That scene where he had to blow the bday candles several times, again and again to compensate with all those years he didn’t celebrate! It was touching and he had those teary-eyes! … and that scene with Mu Yang for Jerry’s b-day, awww!

  80. Awww that would be a nice scene where he’ll blow his birthday candles many times to compensate for the years he didn’t celebrate it.

    Thanks @Eureka, I haven’t seen a subbed episode 12 so your ahead. 😉

  81. Sorry for the spoiler, I’m hopeless so I watched some of the raw videos without understanding a single thing with Chinese subs!I can only guess some clues!

  82. @agdr03, XY has become a worthy verbal sparring partner of XC’s, and he seems to get a kick out of it. I like that XY confidently acts on her decision to return XC’s luck to him. Even more, I like that XC stops and asks, “Are you sure?” There’s more to that question than an exchange of luck. And dear roommate Ruru, next time resist the urge to be scandalized and quietly back away, please, leaving two consenting adults to do what two consenting adults want to do.

  83. @Eureka! Don’t worry, no harm done at all. Keep putting spoilers here, all good. 😁

@Welmaris, right on! I thought XY was quite bold too when she positioned herself like that. And yes, there’s more to that question than meets the eye. ☺️ Ruru was the bad luck this time. 😂

  84. Bloomin’ Ruru! @agdr03, thank you for that clip! Yes, @Welmaris, double meaning certainly. Wow, when Jerry lost his temper about her questions, I was worried. He could be scary.

I also liked that XY let Jerry and the CG designer have time alone. I think she is willing to do whatever gets him back in form.

Ruru is right about XY’s luck. From Ruru’s point of view XY is lucky but XY still doesn’t see it, even though she thinks she stole Jerry’s luck. I’m keeping up and am hoping for ep 12 subs this evening.

What do you all think about YZ’s mother? Up to now she has been rather too Cruella de Ville x Morticia trope. It it sounds like she’s fighting to get her son situated as sort of a ‘crown prince’ in the company. How strange to see her not dressed in black and white in this episode!

  85. @Fern 😂 at YZ’s Mum.

It’s tough when your son told you a few times already that he does not like designing but you still force it. It’s never going to work but I give credit to YZ because he still wants to try because he is a good son. ☹️

  86. Yes. I believe that YZ’s mum thinks she’s doing the right thing. She doesn’t want him to follow his dream but thinks she’s right that he follows hers. Likewise, XY’s dad also didn’t want XY to do what she is doing, but Jerry is persuading him to look at it in another way. The difference between the two sets of parents is XY’s parents want her to be happy and secure and they worry that following her dream won’t allow that. YZ’s mother simply wants YZ to take over the family business and be the next in the dynasty.

What’s going to happen when YZ figures out that the Niki design is Jerry’s and the reason for his sensitivity about it? It’s not going to help the relationship between YZ and his parents – doesn’t she realise that?

    Ahem. Back to that near-kiss…
Do you have the feeling that although XY likes Jerry, he is on a different level of feeling? I was chuckling at his attempts to look ‘un-bothered’, being sure to tug his shirt down and escaping to his room.

  87. @Fern! I think you’re right about Jerry’s feelings on a different level. That look that he gave her when he asked her if she’s sure, he was looking right through her soul.

If Ruru didn’t scream and did not appear, I reckon a nice long deep kiss would have happened. 😉

True about XY’s parents. I love that they still let her be a designer even with their concerns and it was great to see Jerry give them the reasons why she should stay as one. ☺️

  88. What XY perceives as XC wallowing in bad luck is actually XC going through a healing process. He wasn’t a happy person while he was Chief Editor at CHIC. He’s now relaxed and smiles often; that is, until XY pries into his painful past. He has a right to be angry, as she is disregarding his privacy despite her good intentions. I’m glad she apologized.

From the flashbacks, it looks like the car accident and death of XC’s mother happened on the day of an award ceremony. XC is wearing a tux, and he has Nike with him. He’s still in his tux, bloodied and with his facial injuries untended, when he burns Nike. No wonder XC cried when he saw XY’s sketch of Nike, since the dress is tied up with his memory of his mother’s death. It could be seeing that sketch was the first time he’d seen Nike since he burned it following the accident.

So who thinks Lu Ren is XC’s uncle? Maybe even his father? We’ve heard nothing about XC’s father. All we know is that his mom died 10 years ago and that he went overseas to study after winning a scholarship. Was that scholarship the prize for winning the Fashion Cup with Nike? We know Lu Ren is YZ’s father, and that YZ’s mom keeps harping on YZ to win his father’s approval by excelling as a designer. Is she a jealous second wife, wanting her son to step out of the shadows of an older half brother? We saw that Lu Ren secretly cherishes a photo of XC’s mom wearing Nike. And the concept sketches given to YZ by his mom before he made his version of Nike for The Next Runway, they may have been XC’s original sketches held by Lu Ren as mementos and pilfered by YZ’s mom.

I don’t think YZ knows much about his parents’ marriage, other than seeing it is strained. He’s been away for 10 years, so could have been kept in the dark about a lot of his family’s past. And when he was a younger child living at home, his parents may have not talked with him about their history.

If I recall correctly, XC came in as Chief Editor of CHIC one year ago. He went overseas to study 10 years ago, after the accident. So was he gone 9 years? He did have time to accumulate houses and cars, which he asked Daly to sell for him. I assume the flat he used to live in, where he sent XY to collect his belongings, didn’t get sold; from the looks of the loft that has crocheted doilies on the furniture, that flat may be where XC used to live with his mother.

  89. @agdr03, I think because XY is innocent and inexperienced she doesn’t realise what she’s doing to Jery’s feelings. She closed her eyes, too, because he told her to back in the hospital when he was teasing her. She was ‘saved by the Ruru’, or something like that.

When I began this drama, I was sort of puzzled by Jerry’s voice. I was expecting deeper, more urbane somehow, but his voice is very soft which is disconcerting in a nice way.

  90. @Fern, I think Jerry’s voice balances with his handsome face. ☺️ Not too deep but deep enough when he calls you in an angry tone. 😁

Did you happen to catch the date of his birthday? I’m watching episode 12 now and the invitation that XY gave to Mu Yeng didn’t have any 😭

  91. About Jerry’s voice: It is him singing with co-star Shen Yue on the CYLS OST song “I Really Like You” that is often played. https://youtu.be/WiI914nbWd4

  92. Thanks @Welmaris! ☺️ I thought it might have been him with Shen Yue. I like it. 😊

I’m glad XY was able to get revenge when Jerry pushed her face on his birthday cake 😆

To see him emotional especially in front of his Mom’s resting place made me want to hug him.

  93. “I Really Like You” is the song played at the end of each episode. So those are the voices of the ML & FL we hear. Multi-talented!

  94. @agdr03, it warmed my heart to hear XC say while visiting his mother’s grave that he’s becoming happier. I’m glad he’s aware of his improving emotional state, and that he knows it’s because of XY’s influence on him.

That scene at his mother’s grave must’ve been tough on Jerry, twice over. He not only had to dig into his emotions to film it, but it sounds like he had to do it again in a recording studio for dubbing. I wonder why they have to do so much dubbing. It’s not like they’re changing languages on the audio track. Don’t they have the production capacity to capture good audio on site while filming?

If Wu Meng isn’t fired from her job at Yange after this latest wrongful action, I’ll be disgusted with the writer for wasting any more of our time with a flat character. And what’s with Sarah Lin? Is there no end to her malevolence? She succeeded in taking from XC the job as Chief Editor of CHIC, but she wants to crush his effort to become a designer…why? Give us some clue as to her motivation, writer, or she’ll only be a stock character and boring to watch because she’s too predictable.

  95. @Welmaris, yes, his honesty came from his heart. To acknowledge that XY is the reason his happy is a big 10 years leap. ☺️

Wow. I know right? To get all those emotions and then to get it out again when it’s dubbing time, that can be exhausting.

Argh! True about Wu Meng. She is a two face liar, I really hope she gets fired this time. 😠

  96. Possible spoilers. I’m at ep 12.

I think that Wu Meng may re-appear; we’ll see. Jerry says to XY, I said you were too nice (kind?). I believe Sarah Lin is being manipulated by YZ’s cartoon-evil mother. Did you see the way she handed the dirty soup bowl to Sarah Lin as much as to say, ‘Deal with it, servant.’ on two levels. The mother has some control over Sarah Lin, much the same way that Sarah Lin has control over the model and has now threatened her book launch.

I’m getting a bit cross at the dad, Lu Ren. He is crypic about his feelings about YZ’s talents and just retreats, rather than speaking with him man to man. YZ’s mother has been blocking the two men from conversing and YZ has been trying to respect that. YZ has only been receiving his mother’s interpretations of his dad’s actions and wishes. It’s possible that Lu Ren doesn’t want to get between mother and son, but it’s not helpful.

  97. @Fern, all good. I’ve seen it this morning ☺️

Good point about the used bowl soup given to Sarah Lin. She was dressed very nice too but she’s just a useful tool for YZ’s Mom.

I’m with you about Lu Ren. He really needs to just do a proper talk with YZ but it seems he doesn’t have the time.

  98. The scene where XC visits his mother’s grave to have a talk with her, he brings a bouquet of sunflowers. I don’t know about Chinese culture, but I’ve learned from watching Kdrama that the sunflower is a symbol of one-sided love. If the flower language interpretation of sunflowers is the same in China as Korea, then XC’s bouquet not only looked cute and cheery, but could be his way to “say it with flowers”* that he loves his mom but feels very alone. Understandable. And I noted there was another fresh bouquet already at the grave when XC arrived. Either he pays for fresh flowers to be regularly delivered, or someone else brought the flowers. I speculate that Lu Ren visited the grave.

And about the raucus cake smashing scene. I got a kick out of the look Jerry and Shen Yue gave each other before they began. They knew what was coming, and probably knew they had to do it in one take because of the mess created. They also knew it would be somewhat uncomfortable, so had to steel themselves. So when XY offered as her birthday present to XC to give back his luck with a kiss, their locking eyes and questioning readiness could be interpreted on many levels.

In general, I hate the practice of smashing faces into cake or cake onto faces. There’s an underlying cruelty that the sweetness of cake can’t mask. I see it as a violent, demeaning act, not as something cute, but maybe that’s just me. The scene in CYLS was light-hearted and playful, with lots of smiling and laughter, give and take, but I am glad some reality was inserted when we overhear XY say, “Are you my friends?” Passive-aggressiveness recognized!

  99. I forgot my footnote.

*Say it with flowers” is the slogan of FTD, a flower delivery company in the USA.

  100. @Welmaris, I wondered about the other flowers, too. They must be from Lu Ren, because who else would bring fresh flowers on or near Jerry’s birthday. Jerry didn’t seem to notice.

I still think he’s further along in the relationship than XY. For her it’s like the first time one becomes good friends with someone of the opposite sex. I think he is a novelty for her but I don’t think she is attracted to him yet. I don’t think that she’s super nervous about him, like Nanase is of Tendo, because she simply isn’t thinking about love. Judging by what Jerry at his mother’s grave, XY has become precious to him and I think he will start trying to figure out if this is mutual.

  101. Sorry for some spoilers.

I just watched episode 13 and boy I had to laugh at the eating together with XY’s parents scene. For some reason XY and Jerry are more comfortable in displaying their caring side to each other. He kept giving her food and so the question came from her Mom, ‘when are you getting married?’. Hilarious!

Im seeing a lot of Jerry’s dimples now, just stop. 🤦🏻‍♀️🥰

  102. I liked that eating scene. He was teasing her a lot and she was having none of it. I like that he gave her the whole bowl of noodles and added a giant meatball, too, after she complained. Her parents like him so much and XY is rather jealous of that.

Yeah, he smiles a lot now. What a joker about the jujubes, though! After he made her buy them and cook them. (I’ll bet he ate the leftovers.)

I loved the TV show scenes, too. Geez, his trash talk in the green-room was shocking. I didn’t expect that. It was like a boxing pre-match confrontation. He honestly admired the 2nd dress and didn’t hesitate to praise it. (potential future collab?) Onstage, Jerry was like the puppet master. Even his oldest friends were surprised. He was very cute with XY, too, squishing her cheeks and telling her not to worry, but to wait for him in the auditorium afterwards.

  103. Perhaps because they’ve been living awhile in the same apartment, the interactions between XY and XC appear more natural and comfortable. They’re playful with each other. Since his mother’s death and his emotional withdrawal, XC hasn’t been playful with anyone but XY (and Daly, a bit). I get the impression that after learning of XC’s tragic past, XY decided to not show pity. She’s consciously bringing positivity and cheerfulness into his life without being cloying. Think of how overawed XY used to be of XC, but she now teases him and doesn’t hesitate to call bullshit when he’s being difficult. I’d think that refreshing to him, as others either want to pander to him, use him, or compete with him.

As I see it, at this point XC has far more to gain from their relationship than XY, but XY doesn’t see it because she’s been focused on external signs of what she considers a lucky existence: wealth, position, power, beauty. XY didn’t understand that those things have a downside. Once XC was freed from the pressures of maintaining position, power, wealth, he could allow his former self to reemerge. How satisfying that must feel to XC. What XY interprets as a reversal in luck is actually a gift to XC.

I love how down-to-earth XY’s parents are. XY’s dad considers XC a good match for his precious daughter as long as XC doesn’t smoke, drink, gamble, smack his lips, grind his teeth or fart. (Well, dang, if I’d adhered to those standards, my 41-year mostly happy marriage would have been over a long time ago.) XY’s mom advises they live together before marriage in order to test their compatibility. False modesty be damned. There’s no doubt in my mind that XC’s genuine appreciation of XY’s parents, whom he met while in the hospital, helped open his heart to XY. After all, you don’t just marry a person, but into a family.

  104. @welmaris, I was laughing about the stipulations about gambling, when XY had recently caught Jerry playing cards-for-cash with the local elders outside on her street. I was quite amazed that she didn’t mention it.

Yes, her parents are loving and not at all hypocritical. When her father speaks to Jerry, it is more man to man, perhaps because Jerry is somewhat older than XY – 35 to her 24+. He seems to value Jerry’s opinions as well.

XY’s mother says to XY that Jerry doesn’t have a family, but I don’t remember where she got that information. He avoided answering a question about family the first time he visited. They don’t know really who he is; I’m not sure they know his whole name. They are such a contrast to Lu Ren (and his dysfunctional family) who hasn’t yet been revealed to be Jerry’s father, but must be, right?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t there some push recently to expand the list of names used in China because there were so many identical names in the population?

  105. I’m surprised that XY’s parents haven’t yet connected Jerry with her unpleasant former boss. Perhaps they have no time for the internet or celebrities, but I would have thought if they were interested in her current career, they would know. They are a lot more trusting than I would be.🤨😈

@Welmaris, I like your thought that XY is consciously bringing positivity and cheerfulness into Jerry’s life. I think this is her charm and I think the actress does a good job. I think it’s funny the way Jerry slings her around like she weighs nothing.

  106. At last we can see glimpse of Jerry’s experience and maturity in the fashion industry (He’s becoming like Tendo sensei inside the surgery room). It’s kind of cute to see XY’s excitement and support for Jerry’s comeback.

I’m getting some inspiration from XY’s parents in terms of career and happiness for their daughter. I tend to be strict with our 19 year-old unico ijo and hubby get’s angry sometimes.

Looking forward to Ep14, want to see more of Jerry’s smile and change of wardrobes.

  107. @Eureka, I saw some comments discussing how Jerry doesn’t change his clothes, but it doesn’t worry me. I imagined that he didn’t bring all things from his large flat over to XY’s – just the minimum in a suitcase so it’s realistic. I think he left everything else up to Daly -selling his car, his flat and taking care of his things. We’ll probably see more in further new eps. The FL also wears clothes more than once, but it seems realistic to me as her housemate said XY didn’t even have enough money to take a taxi at the beginning of the show.

It’s hard for parents to know what is best to do – be strict, thinking that the success will give more opportunities and therefore happiness or be lest strict and trust that a young person with little experience knows already what will make them happy in the future? My children are 15 and 19 and it has been different for each depending on their personalities and I admit I’ve made many mistakes in over- and under-discipline. I tend to be much stricter than my husband. It’s always good to hear opinions of a character like Jerry or XY’s parents.

I can’t wait for the episodes this week.

  108. Ep. 14 is subbed now. I have to rewatch it in the morning. Mrs Lu And her minion Sarah Lin are tightenImg the screws.

  109. I’m about to watch it now @Fern ☺️ It’s very cold here with just 8 degrees.

  110. @agdro3, wow, 8 degrees is pretty chilly for you!

I saw both eps 14 and 15 now. Two came out on Tuesday. Everyone is upset except for evil Mrs Lu and Sarah Lin and Wu Meng, who is still inexplicably at Yange.

Was Jerry’s ex in the fatal car crash as well or was it another accident? It sounds as though Jerry may have taken responsibility for the crash although we see his mother was driving. There are a lot of mentions about not driving when drinking so far so I wonder if that was a factor?

Does anyone know what was written in the text he received in her car while she was confessing?

  111. Do you want me to open a new thread? Is this getting too long to scroll down for you, ladies? 100+ comments? Just tell me and I’ll create one.

  112. @Fern, yes the mornings are very cold with 3-4 degrees but it’s not bad for a 19 degree day tomorrow. ☺️

I watched both episodes today too and yeah I’m one of those upset people. ☹️ The only good thing is Jerry was honest enough to SY’s parents and it’s good to see him in a blue suit this time. 😂

When SY made that comment about them not being married yet, Jerry paused and he knew that she’s fallen for him.

  113. Yes please Queen! You’re so good to us. 😉 We might as well move to a new thread since Jerry’s moved out of XY’s house. 😁

    What happened to the tree?

  114. @packmule3, may I second the new thread thought, please? Are you mourning your big trees? They must have been mature if you husband thought they could destroy parts of your house.

@agdr03, did you think she had fallen for him? I thought she was being sarcastic, but on the other hand, it did slip out. All of the marriage talk seems to have been between Jerry and her parents up to now.
I’ve seen ep. 16 today – the subbers must be getting overtime. Ha.

(19 degrees? – that’s swimming weather around here. We only got up to 16-17 today and it’s supposed to be summer. Harrumph.)

Oh, I’m glad he’s speaking to XY’s parents so they are aware of what’s going on. They were upset, weren’t they? So they know who he is – I must have missed something because when they first met, they didn’t know the business relationship.

I thought it was interesting that We Mang the actress was discussing the designs with YZ’s mother. I wonder if she felt uncomfortable when YZ spoke about celebrities having secrets. Was that why both designs were dropped?

Spoiler from ep. 16. It looks like Lu Ren is finally becoming aware of the extent of his wife’s involvement in the campaign to damage Jerry.

Gosh, for all of his bumbling, Daly actually understands that living at XY’s place was good for Jerry and he’s willing to help XY out, too.
