Space Sweepers: Open Thread

Updated 2/8/2021: my review is here. Space Sweepers: Review

I don’t know what this movie is all about but it’s currently ranked #7 on Netflix USA. It stars Song JoongKi (“Descendants of the Sun”) and Kim Taeri (“Mr. Sunshine”).

Just post your comments…and spoilers here.

Let’s enjoy the show.

  1. Interesting first 30 mins Lol first look at scrap metal recycling biz in space… -There are tons of waste where humans go- Curious to see what a Korean space blockbuster would offer.

  2. Yes. That’s funny. They’re “space sweepers” because they’re the futuristic version of street sweepers.

Richard Armitage, the heartthrob from the BBC “North and South” is here, too. I can recognize his voice anywhere.

  3. The amount of languages spoken in the movie catched my attention right away.

I never thought that the sweeper in the title meant actually sweeping space garbage.

  4. Wow thank you for creating this thread. I just watched it and i like it! It is great to watched with the whole family I think. Made me remember the life before pandemic when me and my big family usually had a Saturday movie night, if it were not because of pandemic we would definitely watch it together. I’ve liked Kim Tae Ri since Mr.Sunshine, and in this movie she is soo cool!! It is heartwarming and I even cried in many times especially in the scenes of Song Jong Ki and his daughter.

PS: yes the Richard Armitage is there too! I was surprised to see him again. 🥰

  5. I loved this! It takes about 20 min to get going but when it does you can really get invested in characters and emotional beats deliver every time. Last 15 min had me in tears of sadness and joy (you know why if you watched). You can count on Koreans to make movies in genres that otherwise may come off cold-sh (sci fi, zombie/monster horror) genuine moving and this one succeeds like Train to Busan, #Alive and The Host before it. I’m sure there’s more but that’s movies that I saw so far.

This is a mash of GOTG/Firefly/Mandalorian with elements and aesthetic of Elysium and Blade Runner. Yet they made it their own and I would love to see more from this likable cast. I also loved world building and having foreign characters speak their own languages and/or language dialect (English, French, Russian, Spanish) was so refreshing. I liked that in Inglorious Bastards (German, French, English, a bit of Italian), Barbaren (German, Latin), Unorthodox (Yiddish, German, English) so Space Sweepers going that way was really a nice surprise.

I love the cast but special kudos go to robot Bubs and little Kot-nim/Dorothy who were the MVPs.

So yeah, if this is a start of a franchise, bring it. They have intros out of the way so they can now come up with different space sweeping adventyres.

  6. Ahh dat’s y the face looks familiar, Richard Armitage-the dwarf prince from The Hobbit. The part where Buds blushed was cute 😉

Great cast and the characters are well-written. Story plot is kinda predictable so it was not gripping for me. Still, pretty good for the first of its genre.

  7. My fav are Park, Taeri, Kotnim, Suni and Bubs. These characters are ones that left their marks in me.😊 I was really worried for Park. I don’t want him to die🤧

Suni is so adorable but her story is really sad. 😔

  8. I enjoyed it! I found the beginning a bit confusing but was totally immersed after awhile. It can be very intense and doesn’t slow down once it gets going, though. I walked out for about thirty seconds and came back and had missed something big. Really liked Kim Tae Ri. Song Joong Ki’s character is a bit harder to warm up to, but I think that’s intentional.

  9. I watched the movie by myself and then rewatched with the kids for our movie night and it was a fun and engaging space adventure.

It has the feels of Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy with diverse cast and languages. I like the idea of international translation device so that everyone can speak their own language and that will not be a hindrance to communicate with each other.
With the space trash and earth as unlivable, we thought this is like Wall-E (fam favorite) and what we got is Kotnim/Dorothy who was the heart of the story- well acted and endearing kid who made this ragtag sweepers become a family and something good to root for.

It’s a Victory (also the ship’s name) for SK movies, proud of them for bringing a show like this which can compete in the international market. It can be a franchise we’d watch again. The Korean cast was very good, relatable with their own backstories and acted naturally. There was awkwardness on some of the international cast though.

We noticed Kotnim’s eyes turn bluish when she emits nanobot sparks of energy. We call it “Alexa” eyes, the Amazon assistant embodied by Michael B Jordan in the latest ads. LOL! L.U.C.A lead man also has eyes like these when he emits lightning.

  10. Liked it too. 🙂 Now, I don’t feel so guilty about passing up Song JoongKi’s kdrama this month. lol.

Will write a review after watching Superbowl. GoBucs!!

  11. Enjoy the Super Bowl @PM3!!!

  12. I love it. Been a fan of Song Joong-Ki since Arthdal Chronicles. He’s such an amazing actor.

  13. Howdy!

I watched it yesterday and yeah I liked it too. I especially liked the different languages but it’s understood by all. The special effects were good too.

My fave character is Bubs. 😁
