Hospital Playlist 2: Ep 3 The “Oliver” Easter Egg

This will be quick because I’ve family and guests coming for the Fourth of July.

I think @Letta’s “Oliver” Easter Egg deserves a thread of its own. You see, in Season 1, Episode 3, there was a Coffee Easter Egg, too.

link: The Coffee/Aloha Easter Egg

So if we’re going to run with the idea that this scriptwriter and director repeat certain themes and scenes, then yes, this season’s Episode 3 would have an Easter Egg, too. I think this is a far more ingenious parallelism than JH-squeezing-Deoksun’s face = JW-squeezing-Jang’s face.

I’ll repost the conversation from the “Red Herring” thread.

Letta said this:

I can’t help but noticing PG green sweater with OLIVER on it, I search that in a musical “Maybe Happy Ending” Oliver and Claire are 2 old Robots that create fake love story.

They make up their fake backstory of how they met and fell in love. running under the umbrella in the rain, hold hands like normal people do.

That makes me think that’s why in the drama WG looked like robots when holding hands LOL

This is the link for one of the musical song “my favorite love story”

And what a coincidence that Mido the actress is performing the same musical (Korean version)

source: Comment-58030

She added this:

@pm3 You are most welcome, you can read the full plot here and maybe make a lot better observation:

https://koreanmusicals.tumblr.com/maybe-happy-ending-info

Oliver is trying to find his previous Owner in Jeju who had seem to forget about him. Anyway At the end the 2 robots agreed to erase each other memories.

“It’s a pity to delete all those memories
Those memories which shine
What we need to forget, need to erase
Is how much be both loved and treasured each other
Thank you for knocking on my door
Thank you for opening the door for me
You’re welcome
Bye Oliver
Bye Claire”

Flower Garden keep sailing let’s go!

This is @nrllee’s response:

@Letta 😂😂😂 that is so apt! Oliver and Claire! It would fit perfectly with the whole MIB neutralizer nod. Erasing it from our memories. I can totally see this duo doing that. From that kiss in Ep12 on the whole PaBo character arc just didn’t make sense. If we erase it all, and leave us without WG scenes and references to them dating it would make total sense. He stayed because of the kids, not because of a woman. And he remained single till SHwa and he decided to tie the knot. 😂😂😂

@GB said:

Thanks @Letta, for that ‘Oliver’ reference. I watched the clip you gave the link to and the following video was excerpts from the Korean original musical with Jeon Mi Do. We can see her her version of Claire at timestamp 3:39. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPCyNOczSjg

It’s one of those Easter Eggs again, I feel. A very obscure reference to something entirely outside HP, that sheds light on what is going on. And the only link we are given is an Oliver jumper worn by JW!!!

It’s too much of a coincidence that the robots who are not supposed to be able to fall in love are referenced, in the episode in which SHwa is asked to choose a fake boyfriend, and while JW and Jang are behaving strangely robotic. Plus the Dutch Angle kiss and the weird setting for it all. It felt so intentionally wrong in so many ways. As if hiding a fake in plain sight.

@Letta responded:

@GB aww thank you for the link, I have not seen this one. Oliver holds a pot of plant (flower?) another easter eggs yay

@miracle @nrllee @pm3 this blog taught and train my eyes for little things in the drama.. thank you right back at y’all

@GB added:

You’re welcome @Letta! And if anyone managed to watch more of that Korean version of the musical, you’ll see surprise, surprise! Jung Moon Sung (Dr Do Jae Hak) singing (timestamp 10:43) as well!!! Moon Tae Yoo (Dr Yong Seok Min) is supposed to be in the revival performance.

This is the YT ‘blurb’ that goes with the musical highlights:
“Binge-watch ‘Maybe a Happy Ending’ Highlight Numbers [Stay At Home Theatre] 16 Apr 2020 • The tvN drama ‘Hospital Playlist’ is really playing it’s part for viewers.
Showing their presence, the stars are originally musical actors! (Are you watching the show? 😆)

Among them, Jeon Mi-do, Jung Moon-sung, and Moon Tae-yoo. When you see these three, there are works that keep stepping on landmines… It’s the musical ‘Maybe a Happy Ending’ about the love story of old robots.”

And @nrllee pointed out these connections:

@GB As soon as @Letta mentioned Maybe Happy Ending, I remembered watching one scene where the robots kiss. And it reminded me of the WG kiss in Ep3. Where Jang pecks PaBo and then giggles…and they repeat it.

And there’s an umbrella scene 😂😂😂. No wonder WG were bouncing up and down in that umbrella scene. Man MiDo’s voice is phenomenal.

Here she is with JaeHak 😂😂😂. Oliver holds a plant. 😂😂😂. Must admit it felt weird seeing her kiss JaeHak. The metas though… 😂😂😂.

And in the video @GB linked, Claire put on a beanie underneath the umbrella. Jang. 😂😂

This would fit with why the WG dynamic seems so cheesy and over the top cutesy. It’s like that in musicals. But of course specifically in this one Oliver and Claire are robots. And I am waiting for when Shin will erase WG. Neuralized. And for Oliver to return to Jeju in the end. With his flower… 😂😂

I went over the clips and I’ll have to agree that this is an important Easter Egg. I’ll recap what has been said and add more observations, okay?

1. JW was wearing an “Oliver I” hoodie.

To me, the sweatshirt indicated that he was the prototype. He’s Oliver, Model 1 Helper RoBot. According to Koreanmusicals.tumblr.com/Maybe Happy Ending, Oliver was Model 5 helper bot.

In this scene, JW was a helper robot, peeling the bulbs and bulbs of garlic for his “owner.”

2. In the musical, the one thing constant in Oliver’s life was his potted plant.

He brought it everywhere with him. It was there before Claire the Model 6 helper robot, and it was there after Claire left. It would always be with him.

This is similar to Songhwa. Songhwa’s name means flower. She’s the plant who’s always with JW.  In fact, in his mother’s house, Songhwa was still there with him, in the presence of the potted plants by the window.

In comparison, Jang was strangely absent. She wasn’t mentioned even once during the mother-and-son conversation. Considering that Rosa had been dying for JW to have a girlfriend, Rosa’s lack of curiosity about Jang was…disturbing, to say the least.

It’s as if Jang had been erased from Rosa’s mind. Was she neuralized as well?

3. Claire was the needy one. She knocked on Oliver’s door because she needed of recharging.

Jang was the needy one. She knocked on JW’s door because she didn’t want him to leave. She gave him that nauseating ultimatum: “Pick me or pick God!”

credit: BulmaGoku

4. There was even an interesting scene when Claire acknowledged that the plant is Oliver’s closest friend.

Likewise, Songhwa has no reason to be jealous of Jang.

Besides, she’s the villain remember?

5. Plant under the sun

According to Koreanmusicals.tumblr.com/Maybe Happy Ending

“Before Claire leaves, she says to Oliver that he shouldn’t put the pot plant under the sun because it’s too strong there. He exclaims to the pot plant that it should have told him if it were getting too hot.”

The plant’s silence is Songhwa’s silence. She stood silently beside JW all these years, and had been telling him she liked him only in jokes.

6. Oliver and Claire went on a trip to Jejudo, and the plant went with them.

This was like the car ride of JW and Jang. And Songhwa went with them…in the form of the vehicle they rode on.

7. On this trip, Oliver and Claire held hands and kissed like robots (because they were robots, duh) then giggled like high school kids because they were experiencing love for the first time.

JW and Jang held hands and kissed like robots…err…like giggled high school kids because they were experiencing love for the first time.

Note: Songhwa’s carlights were flashing. lol. Drivers know that flashing lights are called HAZARD lights for a reason. There’s trouble ahead.

8. There was even a fake first meeting in the rain. The robots were concocting a story of how they met in the rain to convince humans that they weren’t robots.

JW and Jang had a real rain meeting. But since their date had to be done in secret, it was as if their meeting in the rain didn’t happen either. But yeaaaah…JW just had to go to a restaurant which he could brag about and convince others that he was finally dating.

9. Claire said she never wore red. Do you think the wintry gal would wear something as vibrant and cheerful as red? Jang wore drab colors…like her personality. She’s a geezer, remember?

10. The robots eventually broke up. She wanted to end it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Jang backed out. She’d been holding back on their relationship.

11. Claire and Oliver decided to delete their memories.

“It’s a pity to delete all those memories
Those memories which shine
What we need to forget, need to erase
Is how much be both loved and treasured each other
Thank you for knocking on my door
Thank you for opening the door for me
You’re welcome
Bye Oliver
Bye Claire

Here is where the director gave us the biggest Easter Egg. He “neuralized” JW and Jang at the end, just like @nrllee said.

Remember this?

This is the insider’s joke of IkJun’s MIB scene in Episode 1.

12. The title Maybe Happy Ending” itself is ominous. Jang’s happy ending isn’t a settled law of kdramaland.

So good job y’all!!
Keep on paddling the canoe.

  1. Reading these all in one setting makes me grin from ear to ear. Great job everyone!! Does this mean Ep. 4 is where it ends? 😱😱😱 I am not complaining though *flip hair* 😁😁😁

  2. Wow! Thanks everyone! 🙂 This makes perfect sense. Mido’s voice is amazing!

  3. This is just brilliant! Thank you @Packmule for this insigtful elaboration on the reference @Letta informed us about. And I must say I’m astonished by how complex the narrative is and so many levels. This is really something!

  4. Wow so amazing research, my lovely flower gardener! 🤩 👏🏻👏🏻

    Thank you pm3 🥰

  5. OMGGGGG I trust writer Lee’s brain cells and PD Shin on this!! Please erase all WG scenes lol HAHAHA and FGers reallyyyy!! The research and detective skills, 101/10!!

  6. I forgot to add:
Happy 4th of July to you @packmule2 and all the American friends here on BOD!

  7. Wow wow wow bravo @packmule3 @Letta @nrllee @GB and of course @BulmaGoku’s gifs 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I’ve been also thinking that Jang is the one who will leave. Reasons still unindentified.
We still can find the linearity from S1, if they’ll keep the tempo as how it was before (added with SHwa’s act on being villain), long way to go but keep paddling 🚣‍♀️🚣🏻‍♀️🚣🏻‍♀️

  8. This must be the reason why WG dates and relationship were in secret so that it can easily be erased/ forget because first of all, no one even know that they were in a relationship so they can pretend that nothing really happened lol. No trace, no evidence and audience 🤭🤫

That OLIVER I sweatshirt tho, u really can’t ignore that!!

  9. @Packmule3 I’m sorry for the typo. I was trying to join yesterday’s rewatching of Healer, thought late, which resulted in me marathoning 7 eps throughout the night and that without writing any comment in the thread. I’m not myself today.

@annp18 I’m also wondering who’s going to be the one to break up. Considering the reference to Oliver and Claire it should be Jang. But on the other hand how can she break up with PG if she was the one begging him to abandon his vocation to the priesthood and choose her. I don’t want her to cling onto him and drag this out, of course. What I mean is how can she call herself a decent person after that. We know he didn’t stay for her but for his patient. But she’s not aware of that. I’m really curious how the break up is going to play out.

  10. Wow this is an awesome research and thank you so much @letta @pacmule @nrllee. This is a great easter egg. ShinLee copied the Maybe Happy Ending musical …
good job and thank you Flower Gardeners … ✨✨✨☕️🌸🌿

  11. Easter egg found, cracked and served sunny side up!!! Thanks @PM3, @Letta, @nrllee, @GB for the detailed analysis that only BoD can deliver. This makes me like Ep3 even more!

I thought the neuralizer was a clever plot device to help explain Uju’s (actor) growth spurt after a year while the show did not have that long of a time gap. Now it seems the possibility of its use as a time bending tool may be expanding to the whole show. Let’s see how this gets tied together.

Happy 4th of July to those who celebrate it!! Cheers!!! 🎆 🎇 💥

  12. Whoaaa daebak 🔥 Thanks for the detailed research @pm3 @letta (who started it all) @nrllee @GB and others ❤️

I quite like the neutralizer theory, as absurd as it sounds, and hope it contributes to something fruitful. Fingers crossed!

Happy 4th of July to the US folks! 🙂

  13. Good job for catching this easter egg! @letta
And the elaboration from @pm3 @nrllee @GB were helpful to connect the dots!

Jang said PG is a ticking bomb, and now i wonder if something PG did will make Jang break things off. At first i thought the possibility of Jang ending it is unlikely since she did asked him to give up his life-long dream for her, but the pattern in the musical make it seems Jang will be the one who ended it.

Anyway, whatever the reason is, i can’t wait to be neutralized and forgot all about WG

  14. Ohh so happy reading this easter egg.. thank you packmule, Letta, nrllee, GB and bulmagoku.. the potted plant = SHwa is my own personal highlight. So all this time, Oliver didn’t realize that he’s already had his life partner along the way. This would be the case of Jwon too..

And I’m thinking in the next episodes would we see Maggot wears something that’s written ‘Claire’ on it.. hahaa it’ll be really fuun.

@Linnea,, I had this imagination some plots of Jang asking JWon to break up: maybe one day she would be too uncomfortable dating the professor. Because too much gossip in the hospital and she can’t take it anymore. Or maybe JWon would be really really busy, and Jang too.. and eventually they don’t have enough quality time, and Jang will realize that their relationship is so boring.. Or maybe there will be new interesting Professor that stole Jang’s attention.. and suddenly Jwon is not attractive anymore in Jang’s eyes.. actually this makes me wonder have we ever discuss of why Jang had a crush on Jwon. Is it only because she thinks he’s handsome?
I’m sorry if I imagine too much.. haha

  15. The big easter egg has found. Thank you for amazing finding and connection @packmule3, @Letta, @nrllee, @GB, @BulmaGoku, and all FGers <3

The OLIVER sweatshirt with green light colour makes our eyes focus on that because it's a bright colour whereas all of the colour around RoSa's home are soft..

@busygabee I agree with you, maybe that's the reason why ShinLee keep JWon-Jang relationship a secret. From the reaction of GS professors, residents, and nurse said that JWon is being a gentleman to Jang kekekekeke, not refers to a relationship between them

  16. @moonstar512 thank you for intresting possible scenarios of the break up. I’m not expecting either that Jang would have some altruistic reason to set JW free, like for example seing his connection to Soghwa. I think it probably would be some more egoistic reason, like the ones you listed.

@raininthefall @busygabee I agree that WG being a secret and/or so unbelievable to the hospital staff would make a good neatralizer in real life, making it possible to errase this relationship from people’s minds LOL

  17. @pm3 I agree that Songhwa has nothing to be jealous of Jang over. Songhwa’s bond with JW is much deeper than any romantic connection either of them had. Songhwa had boyfriends and they never interfered with relationship with JW. I invision that JW are going to,start facing problems in their relationship that they can’t resolve. We’re only on episode 3, so so much can happen.

  18. Great eye FG!!! ^^
Bravo! So from now on, keep track of flashes after WG scenes.
Fun fact: JMD called her car Oliver.🤣 She played Claire but she wanted a change, what a plot twist if she plays the plant (Flower). ^^

    Happy 4th July US BoD!

  19. Old American Lady

@Letta, @nrllee,@Gb,@bulmagoku and last but not least, @packmule3, I send my undying respect. These Easter egg connections are fantastic, amazing, awe-inspiring. When I first started HP, in season 1, I looked up the cast members and found out that four of the five main cast had musical theater experience and all five had theater experience. Jeon Mido was an award-winning theater performer who had to audition for the Songhwa role and was recommended by Jo Jung-suk and Yoo Yeon-seok, her “rival TV boyfriends”. My YouTube feed sent me to clips of Maybe Happy Ending as a default. Because I saw these and made zero connections to HP,the Oliver shirt, the plants, Oliver and Claire’s relationship arc, I am completely blown away in the very best way. So I’m thinking that although they might have looked for actors with musical talent, they hit the jackpot in finding the I’ve leads.. And the MIB neutralizer is icing on the cake. The connections and the creativity of the creators are brilliant and in some ways, diabolical, probably to the WGs. These coincidences are so delicious and now, I’m looking forward to seeing how this all plays out. I’m paddling fast and because of this wonderful post, I am grinning from ear to ear. Thank you!

And to all celebrating Independence Day, please have a happy and safe fourth.

  20. I am celebrating alright, @OldAmericanLady, with a strawberry peach daiquiri!

  21. Old American Lady

@packmule3, Yum and cheers! In keeping with the good old American tradition of immigration, we started our day with bagels and lox, followed by pizza for lunch and Vietnamese summer rolls, spring rolls, vermicelli for dinner. And I’m breaking out a bottle of soju and beer(will attempt a soju bomb). Hope you have a wonderful day!

  22. Thank you for clearing this up pk3. I saw this oliver Sweats and was wondering if there is any link to Oliver Twist ? It confused me since I also saw Rosa doubling up JWon’s rice bowl. It did not make sense, because OliverTwist was an orphan, where as here it was not the case.

This connection seems apt since the director and Writer is trying to tell us the audience that WYSINWYG – what you see is not what you get. IT is kind of neat with them introdcing the MIB in ep 1 and then continuing with the robot tango with each other knowing fully well that all these are going to be erased. Maybe JWon will wake up and figure out it was just a DREAM.

Happy 4th to all celebrating it America. Have a safe one. With such dry weather in the pacific West, everyone needs to be careful with fireworks and fire danger being enabled by the intense heat and drought.

  23. 💯🙌👏🥳🎶😂

  24. Wow. The reference really is undeniable. Thankyou @Letta, @nrllee, @GB, @BulmaGoku, and ofcourse to @pm3 for compiling and elaborating on this 👏👏 Thank you too to all other FGs. The show is extra fun to watch because of these discussions.

@busygabee @raininthefall @Linnea Indeed, the secret relationship setup is the perfect way to erase all that’s happened when all this is over. This will then coincide with the neutralizer theory.

Happy 4th of July to those who celebrate it! Keep safe too!

  25. When considering Jang’s personality and behavior, reluctance should not be confused for shyness. Jang is not a people person, but I wouldn’t say she’s shy. Think of how blunt she is with patients. Think of how she fishes for praise for doing her job (e.g. liver procurement, season 1). Think of her participation in the gossip group. No, Jang is not shy. So why is she now holding back in her relationship with JW? She pursued him doggedly since she first met him, so why not allow herself to enjoy her catch? My belief is Jang’s attraction to JW was based on fantasy (love at first sight) and rumor (gossip group), then fed by the thrill of the chase (still got a chance if he’s not yet a priest) IJ’s machinations, and Rosa’s manipulation. Jang was drawn to an idea, not a real person. As her illusions are swept away, she is discovering the reality doesn’t meet her expectations. She’s drawing back from JW because, ultimately, he’s not meeting her needs as a romantic partner.

What did Jang want from JW? She was drawn to his good looks. But despite being tall and handsome, he’s a man-child. She wants to learn from him how to be a better doctor. That’s not romance, that’s mentoring. She wants to be like her friend MinHa and experience the trappings of a romance, but those should be external manifestations of something deeper inside, they’re not the thing itself.

In contrast, look at JWan. He’s in a long-distance relationship. No physicality. Yet we have no doubt about the sincerity of JWan’s affection for IS. Why? He puts her needs and feelings before his. He demonstrates kindness, over and over again. He cherishes IS so much that he lovingly cares for the cilantro plant that reminds him of her, even though he dislikes cilantro in his food.

What kindness have we seen Jang perform for JW? I’ll wait…

When has Jang anticipated JW’s personal (not professional) need and stepped in to fill it? I’ll wait…

We know JW likes to share with others the highs and lows of his day. Have we seen Jang ask JW how his day’s been going, then patiently listen as he releases the emotions that were bottled inside? I’ll wait…

From what we’ve seen of their relationship, Jang is all take and JW is all give. It is unbalanced. JW has a giving nature, and he’s never before been in a romantic relationship, nor was a healthy marriage modeled for him by his parents (Rosa married for convenience, not love), so he’s not yet aware how unbalanced this one is.

All of the things JW is taking delight in from this new experience with Jang–hand holding, hugging, kissing, being able to brag to his friends about dating–are shallow if not backed by depth of emotion. JW, the ticking time bomb, would like to throw all of his emotions into this relationship. He’s an emotional guy. But Jang is saying stop, no, wait, hide. She can’t be holding back due to the inappropriateness of their professor-resident status: she worked hard to snag him despite knowing that from the beginning. No, by telling her sensitive, emotional boyfriend to keep his feelings to himself, she’s rejecting the person JW really is.

  26. Wowwww… This easter egg analysis is setting the bar up high for kdrama series reviewers. I really can’t take credit for this, since I was just cutting gifs. This is all the result of amazing collaboration of FGers, from the detective eyes and brilliant minds in this group. Bravo 🍓🍓🍓💐💐

@Welmaris You wrote one of the best descriptions of JWon-Maggot dynamics, cause and effect of their odd relationship. I couldn’t agree more. All of your points will be their downfall.

  27. @Welmaris You have beautifully described the relationship between Jang and PG. There’s just a lot missing for their relationship to be convincing. And like you, I’m waiting if any of these will materialize.

On Jang’s reluctance, I also agree that Jang seemed to have created an idea on who PG is. This was also mentioned by IJ in s1. The chase also added to the thrill. Now that she got PG, she does not seem to look genuinely happy. It’s as if what she got was not actually what she wanted. Her actions when she’s with PG also seemed a little constricted with traces of hesitation. This is very different to how she acted during her confession.

  28. Old American Lady

@Welmaris, Well said. I still think Jang is hoping that JW will be the chaebol she is hoping for. I don’t think she was any too happy that JW’s car was a freebie from Songhwa(coming from the sister of a car salesman-perhaps looking to get a sale out of JW). It doesn’t hurt that JW is good looking, but methinks Jang’s ultimate goal will be his potential money. And we know where that will go…I think her greed, more than her bluntness, her dourness, her short cuts, is her ultimate fatal flaw. This sets up her extreme disappointment when JW does not live up to her fantasy image of him. Let’s hope, as others have said here, that she initiates the break up with him. Fingers crossed…and padd, paddling, hard.

  29. @angelwingssf,

😂 Same here! “Oliver Twist” came to mind instead of “Maybe Happy Ending.”
I guess we came from THAT generation. The BBC generation.

I’m proud of @Letta for researching it ON HER OWN, and @nrllee and @GB for spotting the connections.

  30. One more. This appeared in the teaser promos…

    https://i.ibb.co/0cT0qmS/1-F4-D81-D2-4-DD9-4317-9-C80-3-C8758069-E9-C.jpg

Curtains for Oliver and Claire 😂

  31. Old American Lady

@nrllee, what does it say? From Hopeful in NYC

  32. @OldAmericanLady,

It’s a screenshot of JW and Jang sitting on an ER bed, their backs facing the viewers, with the privacy curtains drawn. It’s an image shown in the HP2 promotion.

@nrllee is having fun with it and says it’s a curtain call or final curtain for them. 😂 Very witty.

  33. Thanks for explaining it @packmule3. Wait…there’s more…

Unreleased footage after Ep1. IJ asking Jang if they were putting on a show.
    https://youtu.be/03TcQuciREo

And all the other hints dropped. 😂😂
    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1UWV0DxMZpGB2OZLw5RQRDgoPAxDcN_zndz2OjeZ3A7M/

  34. @Welmaris, thank you! 😘 You have described them really well, and I share same sentiment. Their relationship is unbalanced. No reciprocity. It’s never gonna work. April should come soon!!

  35. Old American Lady

@packmule3, Thanks for interpreting for this dense brain. @nrllee, great joke! I guess we’ll be seeing these two for a bit longer. Are they using an ER bed as a motel room? So far they haven’t consummated. In my bad old lady mode I think their initial outing would be somewhat inept and unsatisfying. I just hope they don’t show it. AND please don’t get Jang pregnant. Anyway, am hoping for incompatibility-will save us a wholevlot of cringes…

  36. Old American Lady

@nrllee, They all think that PaBo is such a gentleman…
The fun for me is that they can’t imagine those two together. It’s the yuck factor…

  37. @OAL “using an ER bed as a motel room?” 🤣🤣🤣 this cracks me up. Heaven forbid. Good Lord, please NO. I will go on pilgrimage if that should happen. 😂😂😂

  38. it’s fun to read everyone’s posts and comments! i just de-lurked a couple of weeks ago, but it’s been nice! 🙂

@Janey, I was/am also of the more conservative stand on the MIB scene, and I remember @nrllee kindly explaining the theory further. With that, and now the Oliver Easter Egg, well, it’s fun to see how these could all fit together. 😛 Intelligent people, you all are!

@Welmaris, what a great description of their dynamic! I was earlier thinking that we have had many scenes of JWon asking for SHWa’s help, and JWon showing her his real and unfiltered personality, and none with Jang. But maybe I am being unfair because they are still fairly new. But still, given the two (?) scenes we’ve seen of just them interacting — I agree with everyone that there is still nothing of substance. I completely agree with you on the all-give and all-take imbalance that we so far see.

And I may just be biased, but I was rolling my eyes at Jang’s aegyo. Not cute on you, girl pfft. lol.

  39. Thanks FGers for this easter egg. 👍 👏

Just thinking another probable reason why maggot is attracted to PG could be he is the only prof who dun adore her like others prof. He didn’t do the pick me, pick me dance, instead kept correcting her mistakes makes her all the more want to snag him. Kkkk

Probably she is also not sure whether their relationship can work out or not cos in their 1st kiss, PG didn’t tells her he like/luv her, also maybe she sense somehow their incompatibility, tat why she rather keep it as a secret, telling only to MH. She is not sure they are the endgame. Kkkk

  40. both singers on the video used couple denim I can’t 😀

  41. Much love for this @packmule3, I couldn’t have say it better. You worded it all perfectly.

  42. Everyone here in BOD are awesome I must say. After a lot of reading the threads and comments I think there’s one that mentioned (I forgot who started it) how the drama (season 2) seemed to use two filters for the show. I wonder if the one with soft filter which a bit “cartoon-like” was just someone’s Dream or Plot or imagination. Even the WG street kiss looked like somewhere in Europe country (street of Paris perhaps? New York?) LOL

  43. I’m amazed by the connections to the “Oliver” musical. And WG was “neuralized” at the end of the episode! Never would’ve noticed that if not for BoD.

With WG they’re just giving what the viewers typically want to see, the stereotypical romantic storyline. I haven’t seen any other dramas by this writer-director duo but from reading comments here, it seems like they are more into deeper connections in their characters’ relationships and would not make WG endgame. And as others have pointed out, WG’s dynamic seems unbalanced, more mentor/mentee. Sure, there’s the whole oppa thing in Korean culture and it was “gentlemanly” of him to open the car door for her but he even put on her seat belt for her! Too cheesy…

  44. Kalimera Everyone!

I am amazed by this “Oliver” treat! Good job to everyone involved!

I have to rewatch Episode 3 again for this “neuralized” scene!
Still, it makes sense, since we all felt awkward with this romance, that came out of nowhere…

  45. @welmaris your explanation on PG-Jang’s relationship is amazing!

I wonder what she’ll do when PG started to have a breakdown over another patient. Can she calm him down? Since she is v robotic. We’ve also seen sights of PG being all happy for his patients but i notice he hasn’t showed that side of him with Jang.

@sni75 i agree with your point. Before PG, Jang was worshipped by all her profs. Seeing one not only unimpressed, but also criticized her might spark something her way. But now that he’s into her, she doesn’t seem as happy? Like mission accomplished?

@royangi i’d genuinely be surprised if WG is endgame. Seeing the previous works, the cliches usually weren’t endgame (kissing punishment in a game, couple being cramped in the dark alley etc) while the endgame bond were much deeper, even for the side couples.

Thanks so much @pkml3! It’s great that you’ve brought all the comments together. The body of evidence seems large LOL. I am so convinced!

  47. This Easter egg makes me so happy. Congratulations to the BoD sleuths. 1st class.
    🥇🏆🏵️

Gosh, this show is so elaborately put together. I’m glad now that the director and writer had some extra time to make it so intricate and rich.

  48. Thank you @Welmaris for your insightful elaboration on WG relationship dynamics. That’s so on point. She isn’t shy at all. She’s just holding back bc the whole relationship isn’t probably what she was wishing for in her fangirl mode.

Thank you @Nrlee for additional screens. I loved the references to the dash camera and Dispatch – this would match perfectly the fairytale of a succesful fangirl dating her idol. I’m just wondering if there’s going to be any idol scandal of this LOL

  49. This Easter egg analysis is to die for!! Many thanks to the brilliant minds of @Letta, @pm3, @GB and @nrllee for so wonderfully picking up on this. The discussions on here are so insightful as always and this was just so rewarding to read about – the details ShinLee have packed in and the way FGers here are so quick to pick up on them 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

@Welmaris you’ve really hit the nail on the head with WG’s unsettling dynamics! So true that Jang isn’t shy at all, she was pretty relentless in her pursuit of JWon so her being all reluctant in s2 is strange to say the least. I truly have no idea what even made JWon go for Jang in the first place – other than that whole “she likes me and she’s forward abt” sorta thing. Indeed I thought the Oliver reference was also abt Oliver Twist and a potential nod to JWon’s childishness – as per his discussion with Rosa. But it’s really so fascinating to learn about how the musical itself plays such a huge role…one thing I really appreciate about ShinLee’s works is the way they make you take note of all the nuances of Korean culture.

If @miracle23 is right and ep 4 is where winter ends, I am seriously looking forward to this week haha. As the weeks pass the neuraliser scene is definitely not one to gloss over. Getting More confidence for our FG each time…keep calm and paddle!! The long game is Songhwa’s for the win

  50. @Welmaris,
I really like how you picture the illusion of Jang-Jwon relationship. Yes true, JWon is an emotional guy. Like Mama Rosa said, he is so sensitive and delicate. He also get easily hurt. He is indeed a ticking bomb waiting to explode in front of Jang. I think that not only Jang that had this illusions of Jwon. But Jwon too had this illusions of Jang. To understand what love is. What kind of person that could accept him for who he truly is. Whom he should be with. Who is the person that he should not let go..
I believe that he’ll realize all of them after he successfully cleared up his illusions of Jang.

  51. This is a really rich discussion. I would be interested in seeing how Jang calms JW down during a moment of crisis. I feel like this will be a tell-tale sign from the writer if WG is end-game. I don’t see her doing a good job because she has always been on the receiving end in the relationship. Even Ikjun can calm Songhwa better than Jang can calm JW.

  52. I just rewatched ep 1 and can’t help but noticed that it was raining when jang and jwon had their dinner and guess what they were talking about? Letting go, forgetting, and moving on. Foreshadow?

  53. Good catch @idungkulitayam.

@WhyKay91 Jang is incapable of calming PaBo (or anyone) down in a moment of crisis. She doesn’t have the skills to pick up the social cues? Would she even know that he was troubled? Or have the nuance to help him navigate out of it when she is clueless herself? She would need him to tell her how to get him out of the hole? 😂.

@Welmaris is right about this very strange insistence by Jang to keep everything secret. Isn’t it an open secret (at least to Bong and MinHa and everyone in the Gossip club) that she had a “special interest” in PaBo? Is it the whole deliciousness of being in a clandestine situation that makes her opt for secrecy? Like an affair? The excitement of hiding away in a world of their own. Away from reality? Forbidden apple maybe? It’s well known that affairs function well in the secret but once exposed, it tends to lose its lustre and becomes humdrum? Why does she keep calling him Professor? She knows precious little about him and he about her. All they have is a physical relationship with no roots. In S1Ep4, Dr Bae was pitted against Jang in the abusive father case. Dr Bae did everything right. Jang was shown to be lacking. I wonder if the pretty young ER doctor will be the stand in for Bae this season. She’s certainly competent. And pretty like Bae was. And Shin had something planned for her when he got her to grab PaBo’s arm and ask for coffee. Didn’t Bae mention that PaBo took her out on a one on one movie date? 😂. Let’s see what Shin has to bring us in Ep4.

  54. Hi there!

Great thread. Spring is time for JW’s marathon, so I think maybe we’ll have to wait for a change in PB personal live until ep.5.
Meanwhile, let’s listen in loop the last song. A great rock & roll song where there was no scenes in btwn. Moreover, the focus was on our favorite bassist and drummer enjoying themselves and how they communicate, priceless.

BTW, I rewatch the scene when JW opened his car door for Jang in a very robotic way. There is a reflection of number 191 on the window like a parallel for the scene with the 5 in Shwa’s car. Does anyone know the emergency number in Korea? I know it’s 112 in Europe, 911 in US, but I thought it was 119 in Korea, not 191.

    Can’t wait for ep.4!

  55. Old American Lady

@nrllee, As all of the senior(as in Korean sunbaes)BOD posters have taught us so well, Shin/Lee doesn’t introduce any character without a purpose. In addition we have also learned to look out for red herrings, Easter Eggs, meta references, and unnoticed details that have meaning. It makes for fun viewing but is best viewed with the guidance of BOD. This blog just keeps on giving. So watch out for that pretty young resident. Methinks she’ll give Jang a big headache if jealousy is involved.

  56. Thank you for this analysis @pm3, @nrllee, @letta and @gb. Shin/Lee duo love putting references to movies, songs, events, even laws (Reply88 same surname) in their works, it is really an advantage having FGers with various knowledge in our BOD board. We are really lucky.

JW is really being really boring (robotic?) right now, following programming. Hope there will be unexpected events soon that’ll shake his directives a bit.

  57. Here comes the D-day. Can’t wait for the spoilers 😀

  58. @Bulmagoku Me too

  59. @packmule3 can we have the HP Ep4 thread please? It will drop tonight. Thank you. 🍪🍪🍪

  60. Thank you, thank you to @packmule 3 and all the BODs. I had no clue about the “Oliver” reference, though I did wonder about it for a split second.I’m so impressed with the posters here. There are so many layers to this show that I never would have been aware of. No one in my circle shares my interest in Korean tv. It’s so great to come here. Now I want to explore Korean musical theater!

Oh and Rosa never had any interest in Jang. She just wanted anyone who would stop her baby from entering the priesthood. It’s kind of selfish, but she’s always been honest about it.She’d pull Jang’s hair out if she ever tried to come between her and her son. JWon seemed content in this Jangless corner of his world. We know that Rosa genuinely does like Shwa. They’ll work things out!

  61. @welmaris @linnea
agree with both your points on WG relationship. it looks bland and more like a high school romance. there is no proper conversation between them yet.or they just don’t want discuss about it?
