@IB, started … so we have failed attempt at book burning and fireworks in the sky as DP finds the words that stop IH’s hiccups. Quite poetic but noisy!!!

I’m at the point where IH says their chances of becoming reporters is 50-50.

It’s funny that IH always hides behind DP when she’s afraid of her father.

Now we have the funny ironic scene… the beautiful daughter that he was approving of just a moment ago appears to be crude and not beautiful as she accosts him with toothbrush in hand.

I was saying that this is an episode of revelations…
1) DP reveals that he does like IH to her dad.
2) We see that Grandpa knows more about DP than he lets on. He knows that DP is smarter than his real son ought to be.

I love the make-over scenes… and this reversal of that trope since the guy gets the make-over and it done by his ‘father’. From a taxi-driver who looks like a wuss… he is totally transformed.

@IB @WE, I love the bus ride with ‘dad’ scene. Brings a tear to my eye. The stuff of kdramas!!!

We find that Reporter Kim continues to be a hypocrite and only his underling knows it.

Oh, the mother of the golden boy is the old woman you see in half of kdramas, as well as mother of the FL in “I hear your voice”.
In the BUS, they don’t even recognize the golden boy (while he was with them, just one hour ago). Dalpo is quickly jalous.

At the camera test… we have a video of a cat who pretends not to mind being attacked by a bird, only to turn around and catch that bird in a flash.

The question of veracity in reporting turns up… each person embellishes the report without checking on the facts.

His way to comment that is ok about diction, but bad about storytelling, but as he doesn’t know the end of the video, it’s quite difficult. Anyway, his meaning was quite bad since the beggining.

NO !!! Seriously, it’s crazy UNFAIR, they re-use the same video, so every further guy already know what happens and can prepare themselves. What is this awful test?? They could change the video at least?!!

I am surprised that reporter Hwang (? fiveoclock shadow) recognizes Dal Po from the nightmarish closeup in the elevator confrontation a month ago.

@IB, I believe it was years ago when he was a kid that Reporter Hwang saw him but he still recognises DP.

@WE, I know crows seem to recognise people too and harass the same persons whenever they pass by. Had one coming at me just because I walked past it’s nest which I could not even see. My husband was also harassed by crows until he stared them back in the eye and they gave up.

@WE it’s the debate test that will upset IH. She says precisely the sort of thing that will irk DP who has just found out through the Reporter Hwang that his father’s remains have been found…

One moment he is helping IH to hide that she’s a Pinocchio and next he reveals that he knows she’s a Pinocchio.

The reporters grading the interviewees trade gossip about them bec they are frustrated at not being able to classify them by status. It makes it interesting for us while also being social satire.

Part of the narrative carried at second-hand as Grandpa reacts to InAh’s reporting over the phone. Nice. Not boring.

The sadistic writer chose the case of Dal Po family as the case of the last test.

The discovery of the skeleton — a total surprise! We saw the elder brother taking the demolition job but the deceptive assumption we make is that the event at the site of the factory fire is contemporaneous with this set of interviews.

Love this kind of trickery with the timeline to create surprise or misapprehension. Along with the sweet sadness of the bus ride, for me another fave feature of kdrama.

Then we get another PHR crying scene that gets us in the heart. LJS does a good pretty crying job not an ugly cry!

The final revelation for the episode …IH discovers that she has feelings for DP … something that she never expected to have for her ‘uncle’.

Was it the make-over that conquered her heart after so many years? Heheheh!

The golden boy ask: you seems to like this guy. She answers “no”, but asap, “HOC!”, an hipcup. 🙂

It ends on PSH understanding her own feeling.
So good that PSH is FL in this, I really like this actress, she’s wonderfully skilled.

So much emotion, carefully layered.

First the older brother in the side story about the discovery of Dad’s bones, breaks out weeping. Very hard to look at.

Then poor In Ah, always with her rational side betraying her heart or vice versa.

And finally the younger brother Dal Po grieves over his dad, on his knees in some weedy neglected corporate employee break space.

The discovery we will find out solves nothing. The harm has been done.

Poor In Ah has no idea who Dal Po is and of her own mother’s guilt.

@IB, I was also thinking about that cat and bird video. We had to watch it 4 times. There was no head or tail to it, just a situation where the bird was attacking the cat who was perhaps a threat in some way, but we have no way to find out what the real situation is. Sufficiently provoked, the cat turns on the bird and catches it.

Having to report on this was a pretty accurate recreation of the situation around the reporting of Dal Po’s father’s tragedy. The reporters knew not the head or tail of it, but spun it to be as sensational and newsworthy as possible in order to raise their ratings, because they were ordered to.

In Ha only gave the bald facts of the bird-cat video and when asked why, she said that the story the 2nd and 3rd candidates came up with could not be verified. And yet it was what they said that sounded like ‘good’ reporting…adding a proverb or suggesting that the bird had a nest nearby was considered a nice augmentation to the facts.

She was also asked what she’d do if the news just had to be reported according to the way the station required it. She’d have been stuck, because as a Pinocchio, she would not have been able to lie to make the report sound more interesting than it was.

I liked the Rich Boy, Beom Jo’s attitude best … he refused to report it because it was not newsworthy on its own; it needed to be exaggerated, and he refused to do that.

The problem with news stations: they insisted on ‘making’ the news to compete with other stations. The more sensational, the better, regardless of the consequences to the subjects being reported on.

I was also thinking about how it was twice that DP turned on IH and both times it was immediately after they had ‘become good friends’. The first time was when he found out whom her mother was. The second time was in this episode, just after they’d given each other the thumbs up.

DP’s emotions got the better of him. He was in a near impossible situation. He suddenly finds himself seeing, hearing and experiencing again the pain of his hidden trauma in front of the people who had a hand in causing it, and he could not reveal anything. He was also suddenly made aware that his father’s remains had been found but that he had no means of knowing this earlier… and also that this meant all his family’s tragedy had been totally undeserved. His father had died a hero but instead had been vilified as having run away. And there was no way to put things right or recover all that had been lost.

I can imagine the height of his anger that IH should forgive the reporters because they did not know better. It was understandable that he should turn on her.

What is remarkable though is that she did not feel betrayed for this revelation that she was a Pinocchio, but rather that he had not been on her side.

This writer, PHR has a gift in reminding viewers of the theme and the question that she’s asking, in a non-preachy way and grounding it in an interesting drama of ‘false’ relationships. So we end up asking ourselves what kind of news we are asking for, what falsehood are we prepared to accept and believe and when we give news, do we stick to the boring but true?
