Hwayugi: Episode 10

I’m not going to list the things I like about Episode 10 because what good will that do?

Everybody and their mother have already regaled us with their dislikes and likes, and mine would just be added clutter to the brain.

Instead, I think I’ll go over some things that may have been missed.

1. For instance, do you understand now why OG wanted to leave the bookstore, right? It was because that particular bookstore was a gravesite. All the books sold there contained a life of a person who committed suicide. OG only released the souls of the dead children. (To read more, go to the tab marked “Hwayugi” and read the post on Children’s books and suicide.)

There also seems to be a confusion between the soul and spirit. The dead children had their souls taken by the bookseller. Hence the Reapers’ report that the souls of children were missing. I assumed that the Reapers couldn’t collect them and send them off to the afterworld or wherever they need to go before reincarnation. The bookseller (or Lady Suicide) was keeping the children’s soul because she considered reincarnation a bad thing. It meant exposing the kids to the same bad cycle of fate.

When Mawang found out that the bookseller wouldn’t renounced her ways and would continue to kill off children by tempting them with suicide, Mawang decided that it was best for SunMi to be reinstated as SamJang. Remember, Mawang didn’t want to use the deaths of humans to gain his reward points.

As for people who were alive, like SunMi and the grandmother/pro-Japanese collaborator, it was their spirits as children that we saw in Episodes 10 and 5 respectively. Those spirits cannot be killed because the human person or the physical bodies of those spirits are still alive. The malevolent spirit, like the kimono child, only dies when the host body dies.

2. Re contract. As OG said, no contract existed that he couldn’t break. Although the bookseller was the new contract holder, there was no way she could enforce the terms of agreement because OG wouldn’t agree to the terms.

I found it funny that although he repeated what he once told young SunMi — that he was a bad guy, shady and untrustworthy — he used brute force to get his point across with the bookseller. (The Hong sisters gave the legal term “under duress” a whole new twist when OG threatened the bookseller to call him if she wanted to die. lol.) His attack on the bookseller brought home the fact that he could have also used physical force on Old SunMi to get out of the contract with her – had he really wanted to. He could have made good on his threat to make their “fairy tale” end happily …errr… bloodily every after.

But the worse that he did was use a loophole (that is, remember his name) to get out of the contract.

3. Re whether the GGG could be activated by the bookseller with a kiss. I think this was a moot point.

Even if the bookseller kissed him, I doubt it would activate it. As the God Representative told Mawang early in the episode, only OG knew whom he loved. To me, his statement signified that GGG’s power to FORCE love between the master and the servant had been nullified ONCE OG realized that he actually loved SunMi.

Remember the original purpose of the GGG. It was placed on OG to stop him from eating/killing SunMi so SM could live and do her job as the SamJang. Now that he knew he couldn’t kill SM because he loved her, the GGG lost its control over him. I bet, with or without that GGG, he would die for SM if he needed to.

This would also tie in with the god representative’s conversation with Mr. Frost in Episode 8. Mr. Frost asked him if the real reason the GGG was put on OG was so the two would never discover each other’s true feelings, but he became suddenly evasive and quickly fled the ice cream tent.

On the contrary, I think the GGG was designed to make OG recognize his beloved and learn to protect her because once he did so, they could fulfill the next part of their fate, that fate that there’ll be “one who dies, and one who kills. When the ones with that deadly fate meet, it is said that they will hear the ringing of the death bell.”

It was definitely interesting to hear the death bell ringing when they kissed each other in the bookstore. It was like the ringing of the bell at the end of a round. It announced that Phase 1 of OG and SM’s destiny had been accomplished and they level up.

4. Another entertaining point in this Episode 10 was OG’s clinginess – and how it tied in with Episode 1.

Who’s being clingy now?

You see, from the very beginning of the encounter at the bridge, the reason he got upset with her was that she could easily dismiss him.

(This bolsters my theory that OG showed up at the crosswalk because he had HEARD SunMi tell that dieting ghost that she could hardly remember OG from her childhood memories. Check out that post if you haven’t read it. It’s in my Hwayugi files.)

This may be tedious reading for some lazy bitches, but I’m posting the dialogue between OG and the grown-up SunMi from Episode 1.

OG: Wow, kiddo. Oh, you got so old. You survived. I’m so proud of you.
SM: I aged a lot trying to survive. But you’re still the same Fairy.
OG: By chance, have you still been looking for me?
SM: You finally appeared now, Fairy
OG: I didn’t just appear now. I guess I was passing by?
SM: As expected, I wonder why you showed up again after you conned me.
OG: I didn’t have a chance to appear. You’ve never called out my name, have you? Why didn’t you look for me harder? Even though I’m sure you wouldn’t have remembered it no matter how much you tried.
SM: Fortunately, I didn’t look for it too hard. You didn’t seem worthy. So, I stopped looking for you.

OG: What?

(He straightened up when she said this. He looked like he wanted to tell her a thing or two, but was letting her rant.)

SM: When I was a child and didn’t know any better. I thought you were a big thing since you lied you were a fairy. (He couldn’t look at her). But as I live on, I learned that you could be an ordinary spirit that’s trapped in a house like how you used to be. By chance is your name Jibang-spirit?
OG: Are you calling me a Jibang-spirit and an ordinary spirit?
SM: Are you not? Forget it then. Ah, you said you were passing by, right? I wasn’t going to stop you by calling out your name so pass on by.

(He scoffed at her.)

OG: What’s wrong, huh? I heard human beings only gain anger as they age. (He tried to jab at her too.) Jin SunMi as a child who pleaded me to protect her was cute at least. Old Jin SunMi looks pathetic with nagging furiously to me. (Jabbing at her) It must be hard for you to deal with even an ordinary spirit. Ugh. I can’t just pass you by. What’s your cellphone number? I’ll text you a talisman.
SM: And you’re getting my number? Wow. Then, will you tell me your name?
OG: If I told you my name is so and so, would that really be my name?
SM: Then, if I were to call out your real name, will you show up to protect me?
OG: That’s right. Call me if you’re struggling I can’t guarantee that I’ll answer.
SM: Why would I call you on the phone? You said you’d come if I said your name.

OG: What?

(She startled him. He understood her meaning well but couldn’t believe his ears. She was saying that she did NOT want him to come to her side, that’s why she wouldn’t need him to leave his fake name.)

SM: I know your real name, Fairy. I remember. (He looked astounded.) I already know what your name is. Alright then, I’ll get going first since I’m busy.

(She exited.)

OG: Hey, old Jin SunMi. How can you tell such a lie? How would you know my name?
SM: I just remembered it.
OG: It’s not something you can just remember.
SM: Don’t believe me if you don’t want to.

(She lengthened her stride to get away from him. But he chased her and grabbed her shoulder.)

OG: How dare you try to deceive me? If you really know it, try calling it. You don’t, right? … You don’t, right?
SM: You got scared. That I might call out your name, huh?

(No. In my opinion, she got it wrong here. He got scared because she might have known his name all along BUT DIDN’T call out his name.)

OG: Hey! (He lost his cool and shouted.) Do you know what I am? With the three letters in my name, even the Jade Emperor will be shivering. That the kind of person I am. So you shouldn’t be lying to me from now on. Just say you don’t know.

(See how absurd he was being? If the Jade emperor was scared at the mention of his name, then why would he be upset that she didn’t call out HIS name? She was just a mortal. Pride?? lol.)

SM: I’ll say I don’t know. (She obliged him. It was like she said, “oookayy, fine. Let’s just say that I don’t know your name. Happy now???”)
OG: Ugh, seriously! (He became even more frustrated.) If you don’t know, you don’t know. What do you mean, “Let’s say I don’t know?”
SM: I won’t be calling you anyway. So let’s say I don’t know.

OG: What?

(Again, he stopped at her remark and looked at her uncomprehendingly. See this? Every time he said, “What?” and looked flabbergasted, it was right after SM dismissed him and told him that he was nonessential to her. He didn’t like that. He didn’t like that she was NOT CLINGING to him, like she did when she was a child.)

SM: I won’t be calling you in the future. It’s not that I can’t. (He looked stunned.) I grew old well. I got to know things on my own and live a good life protecting myself on my own. While doing that, I didn’t have the need to call on the Fairy to protect me.
OG: You don’t need to call me for help. (He scoffed again.) I guess it was worth growing up for you. Fine. I’ll go on my way. (Took a deep breath). You go ahead and keep again without stopping. I will give you a good advice. Age slowly. (Said like he was taunting her.)

(OG saved her from the male motorist. She didn’t know that OG was the one who made the man do the silly hand gestures.)

OG: What? Since you told me you wouldn’t need me, I thought you are good at fighting but you still have one umbrella only to fight with.
SM: My cellphone here and CCTV over there. Things like these protect me well.
OG: Fine. Even though it’s impossible, let’s just say that you remembered my name. Then why didn’t you call me?

(Here is the crux of the matter. This bugged him that she didn’t call him)

SM: Who’s the one who ran away? Why do you get upset at me for not calling on you?
OG: After hearing that I wasn’t needed, I felt offended. As if you were looking down on me. (But that didn’t answer her question. Why should he feel upset? Why was he offended? Why did he feel like she was looking down on him?) I’ll have to check. Call me. What’s my name?
SM: Fine. I’ll call your name, Fairy. Your name is…Your name is… (phone call) Yes, Han Joo. I’m sorry I couldn’t answer your call. I recognized someone on my way in.

OG: Hurry up and hang up. Can’t you see the person who you were having a conversation with?
SM: He’s not that important. I’ll be there soon.
OG: This “not important” person has been waiting for long while being offended. What kind of trick are you trying to play?
SM: A trick to make you alert. I’m sure you felt at east thinking I couldn’t call on you. From now on stay tense knowing you’d never know when I’m going to call on you. (He nodded his head as if he was finally getting her point.)

OG: Then, call me. I’ll kill you if you’re wrong. Since you called me “Fairy,” I was going to end it at being a cute fairy tale. But you’re going too far with your joke. Should this Fairy end this fairy tale cruelly with some blood?
SM: Fine. I don’t know your name. I was being pretentious.
OG: I was still proud of you for remembering me. So I said hi. How dare you be pretentious with me?
SM: Have you ever thought of me who might call on you?
OG: Of course not. I knew you’d never be able to call me.
SM: I see. I’ve been waiting for that fairy for the last 25 years. (He looked at her seriously.) Wondering if he’d come to protect me. Desperately. The happy ending in the fairy tales with fairies, the torture of hope that lasted 25 years ends today.

OG: I came out saying that I’m not a fairy a long time ago.
SM: I know. But I don’t know why I waited for you.

(And she walked away from him without a backward glance. Sometime later, he would talk to the Summer Fairy and he would admit that it bugged him when she said, “desperately” because he didn’t understand that. (I posted about this. It’s under Hwayugi: First Couple Act.)

Do you see it? OG liked the idea of SunMi clinging to him. He liked the young SunMi because she begged him to stay and protect her. He couldn’t stand that this adult SunMi would just brush him off like that and walk away coldly from him.

Then, in Episode 10, we see this happening again: SunMi discarding him. Twice.

First, she visited him at his house and after he answered that she didn’t look as pretty as before, she simply said, “That’s a relief. Then there’s no need for me to see you anymore.”

And of course, he incorrectly concluded when she turned around and left WITHOUT much ado, not even bugging CEO Sa, that she didn’t love him at all.

Then, when he visited her at her office to bid her farewell, he was fully expecting her to cling to him like she was the young SunMi but she didn’t. I’ll post the dialogue here.

SM: Did you come because I called you?
OG: I didn’t come because you called me. I can’t hear you call anymore.
SM: Then why did you come?

(Now, the impression here that OG would get here was that she didn’t want him there. Like this: why are you here anyway? I didn’t call YOU.)

OG: I came because I’m going far away, but I forgot something.
SM: What?
OG: A farewell.
SM: A farewell?
OG: I felt like if I just left, I would regret it and it would probably gnaw at me. I thought since we’ve spent time together I should at least wish you well first.
SM: You’re going far away?
OG: Yeah. Why? You don’t want to let me go and you want to hang onto me? Are you being clingy?

SM: I’m not going to do that.
OG: As expected. The little Jin SunMi told me not to leave and hung on and was clingy. But I see the old Jin SunMi doesn’t do that. You grew up well.
SM: If you are going to say that kind of farewell, say it at the bookseller’s. That Jin SunMi isn’t here anymore.
OG: I see. I forgot. The person in front of me is the ordinary Jin SunMi, isn’t she? (Of course, he was going to hit back with that “ordinary” dig.)
SM: Son OhGong, is there going to be a new owner of the GGG, to replace me? You’re going to do the same for her as you did for me? Is that it?

(But she understood his “ordinary” barb in a different way. She thought that HE was mocking her loss of her SJ’s special powers. That because she isn’t special anymore, he was going to discard her and start falling in love with the new SamJang.)

OG: Are you asking if I love her? Why, you don’t want me to? Are you being clingy?

SM: Forget it.

(See there. That was the second time, she spurned him. Just like their encounter on the bridge at the shopping mall in Episode 1.)

SM: This is a busy time for us ordinary office workers, so I’m tired. I want to rest, so leave now. (Dismissing him again.)
OG: No wonder you’re tired. Why are you going around with that thing stuck to your side? (Referring to the ghost.)
SM: What?
OG: What? So now that you’ve become ordinary, you can’t see evil spirits anymore, huh? No wonder.

(Note that. Like us viewers OG thought that her SamJang’s powers are separate from her ability to see demons. She could see demons BEFORE she became the SJ.)

OG: If you have that thing attached to you, you’ll keep being tired. (lol. I like that he’s being concerned but…but…) Why? Are you looking at me? To ask for help? Are you being clingy?

SM: Forget it.

(hahaha. Snubbed for the third time. Strike out!)

SM: Just turn a blind eye and leave things alone that ordinary people can’t see. I want to ignore it as well. Please go. (Brrrr…Sooo cold.)
OG: Alright. Live well.

Indian giver. De-gifter!

See that? Three times, SM told him that it was over… without blinking.

Then, to add insult to injury, SM followed him outside to say goodbye to him. He fully expected her to tell him not to go like she did when she was a child.

But instead this happened:

OG: Looking for me? You have something to say now? Say it.
SM: A farewell. I felt like I never properly said it to you.
OG: A farewell?
SM: Thank you for everything all this time. Go somewhere warm and live well. Goodbye.

(By the way, did anybody ever wonder why OG stuck around in SK all this time where there was cold winter and didn’t leave for warmer climes 25 years ago?)

So OG went apeshit.

OG: Hey, Jin SunMi. After all the things I’ve done for you, all you have to say about it is, “Thank you”? After all the pain you put my heart through, now you tell me “Live well”? And now you’re telling me “Goodbye” without even trying to hold on to me once?!

(lol. I like this “you ungrateful wench” trope)

SM: You’ve suffered because of Geumganggo.

OG: Even though I’m going to stop piling my love onto you, you’re really fine with that?

(lol. Every single time, OhGong says he’s going to PILE ON love, I’ve this mental image that he’s going to pile on SHIT or cow-poop because in slang, POS means “pile of shit.”)

SM: It was fake, wasn’t it? You should be happy now too because the contract with me is gone.
OG: Speak for yourself.

(Meaning, don’t tell him that he “should” be happy AND don’t act as if she was doing this as a favor for him. She’s the one who’s all happy with the set-up.)

OG: You must be happy as a lark now that you can live like a normal person instead of SamJang.
SM: That’s right, I am. Because of a certain someone, I had to live a tortured life being someone special. It’s peaceful now and I’m happy.
OG: Congrats on becoming an unremarkable person that will never need to call on the likes of someone great like me.

(hahaha. The sarcasm is real.)

OG: Live a happy life eating Ddeokbokki with all those other boring people just like you.

(In other words, Go eat turd…errr… ddeokbokki.)

I like how it drove OhGong bananas that SunMi was letting him go easily. However, I think these characteristics of SM (that is, to compartmentalize and to act indifferent even when she’s hurting inside) are related to what the god representative told Mr. Frosty in Episode 8. He said that Mr. Frosty’s attempt to help SamJang discover the Great Sage’s feelings was a futile exercise because feelings couldn’t get involved until the mission is fulfilled.

Also, it ties it nicely with the mermaid story and OG not being “pitiable” in Episode 7…. But I think I’ll have to write about this some other time because this post is too long.

So that’s it folks. My (short) take on Episode 10.

6 Comments On “Hwayugi: Episode 10”

  1. Watching ep 11 right now [subs aren’t up but I work tonight/tomorrow so this is my only chance to watch it] and had a thought about the bell.

It’s supposed to be the grim reaper’s bell right? So wouldn’t the reaper be able to hear it ring in order to know who is about to die?

To that effect, wouldn’t that make SM the ‘reaper’ in this scenario since she’s the one who hears the bell ring?

  2. Just finished 11 and can I just take a moment to say that while the SOG in the ending of the episode is awesome, I am more happy with how much his family has extended beyond himself lately. My baby SOG is growing up so fast! ./tear :joy:

  3. I haven’t watched the ep yet, phikylz. Had another dinner affair so didn’t come home till late.

That’s a good point! That’s probably the reason why she’s the only one who could hear the bell ringing when they met at the intersection.

If she is the “reaper” then she is death/killer. The grim reaper announces death and CAUSES the death of the person he/she appears to.

lol. But let’s wait and see what the Hong sisters choose to do with the story.

  4. Are the subs done? I won’t have time to watch till Monday. Have guests right now. 🙂

  5. 84%. They probably won’t be done for both eps until Monday or Tuesday. 🙁

  6. It’s 6am here. Are you home now any about to go to sleep? I can open up a post just for Ep 11 if you want to talk about it. I don’t mind spoilers. Lol. I love spoilers and I love to hear your first impressions.
