Poem a Day: What a Fool You Are

Oli asked me this.

I checked if the Korean title of the movie is the same as the one on the book MinHo has. It is: 호우시절
This movie seems promising for MinHo. The poem, that book could not have been chosen randomly.
But now I’m thinking that, as BoYoung romance with Dr Ye seems like a silly fantasy and settling,  I’m not sure she had in the past anything intense with MinHo. And she surely didn’t show much feeling towards him now. She’s just familiar with him, that’s all. We’ve only seen him loving her while she’s been fantasizing about Dr. Ye.
Even if there was a good reason for his breakup, I’m still not sure how things will go in these last 4 episodes. There is hope though. Until now the drama has proved to have a plot with a lot of attention to these kinds of things. Nothing seemed random. It would be seriously weird for them to start now.

*************

Oli asked a valid point.

What ARE Boyoung’s feeling for MinHo? I agree that she hadn’t shown much of her feelings for MinHo which is why this Episode 12 kiss appeared to be the iceberg that sunk the Shin Ship.  We saw her childish cotton candy fixation (Episode 8), her GIDDY happiness, and her surreal daydreams (Episode 10) FOR YE, but we haven’t seen an equivalent reaction from her toward MinHo.

But but but but but

I think in this scene in Episode 11, when she was looking at her cellphone, it was MinHo’s picture with her at the beach that she had been looking at.

It’s process of elimination.

She couldn’t have been reading poetry because then she wouldn’t stare at the screen that long with scrolling to read the rest of the poem. And she couldn’t have been looking at Ye’s pic because I don’t think they have one together yet. Right? The company dinner on Episode 12 was their first pic.

So, I think it was her picture of MinHo at the beach that she was staring at. MinHo had showed it to her earlier that morning.

MH: BoYoung, look at this. Don’t we look good?
BY: Hey, what’s this? Let me see.
MH: Didn’t it turn out well?

Then they laughed together.

Sometime later, she went outside. In that private moment, she stared at their picture together. I don’t think you’d do that – look longingly at a pic – when you’ve friend-zoned him already.   😀

And the poem is apt for her, too.

What a Fool You Are
by Shin Hyung Geon

You can’t spit out your gum wherever you please
So you run over to a garbage after wrapping it in tissue.
What a fool you are.

It’d be so much quicker if you sneak out of a doggy door (or back door exit???)
But you take the long route to use the main doors.
What a fool you are.

When you see a man whose face is covered in coal
You needlessly bow to greet him.
What a fool you are.

You cry all by yourself because a strict teacher is transferring
When no one else is crying
What a fool you are.

What’s the big deal about that anyway?

You squat in front of a dandelion
And stare at it for quite a while.
What a fool you are.

No matter how much I boast with a bunch of lies
You nod along with me
With your eyes opened wide
What a fool you are.

When I call you a fool,
You just smile back.
What a huge fool you are.

Then what am I?
I like you so much that I follow you around
As if I’m your shadow.
What does that make me?

Remember that scene in the bookshop? She had “boasted” about her friend from high school who was now a published poet, but he just nodded along with her, encouraging HER that she could be a poet, too. And then, when she called him a fool, for not knowing how to read an appreciate poetry, he just smiled back, after protesting a bit, and then followed her like a fool.

So to relate it back to the point of the poem here…

To me, she also liked him that much. You see, she ALLOWED him to follow her as if he was her shadow, too. 😀

  1. ah, that’s nice, the poem fits for her a bit too. Anyway, I think we need less subtle things considering how with Dr. Ye it’s all so in your face.

  2. Can’t believe we have 3 (almost 4 waiting for subs) more days to mull over these clues!!! EEP EEP.
These discussions on here keep my faith alive though.

Evergreen & The Great Seducer both ended with ‘3 years later’ scenarios. I wonder if it’ll go in that direction, except that it’s already there for MH + BY. This is their 3 years later/redemption opportunity. Nam Woo got his 3 years later and Dr. Park got her 3 years later, and we were able to kind of get closure for those relationships for those character. But we started with BY + MH’s story at 3 years later. And like Oli said, there still isn’t any closure for our mains yet and I also don’t think the writer would introduce those back story’s without it being relevant to our mains.

  3. @Mai, Don’t even get me started about Evergreen. That show started with potential, I think the writer wrote herself into a corner and she didn’t know how to end it. She ended it with a time jump and amnesia and open ending where nothing was explained. So if anything, I hope APAD writers won’t take a page from EVERGREEN writers.

What a fool you are… I think the writer is mocking us. Hahaha. Just kidding.
