The Ghost Detective: Gil Chae Won

Is it okay to like this character, the pathologist and ex-shaman Gil Chae Won?

It was funny when she was lying on the autopsy table with her white jacket covering her. She looked like a corpse with a white sheet on top so I squeaked (eek!) when she suddenly sat up.

It was also ridiculous that she had this manikin on her desk.

That’s a manikin that artists use for sketching the human body because the various parts of the wooden doll could be moved to match positions. I expected to see a 3-D anatomical model.

Hmmm…maybe she uses those dolls for her shaman-ism.

But I liked her most in Episode 6 because she conquered whatever it was that was holding her back from facing ghosts again. It could be her past history or a promise made to her spiritual mother or just retirement from shamanism.

The night before, she told Lee Da-Il that she couldn’t go with him and that he had to go alone. But the following day, she stepped up to help Da-Il and went inside that tunnel. She was dreading the encounter, but she braved it out.

And that takes courage. You’re only really courageous when you’re facing your deepest fears.

  1. Along with courage she also has a plan for the situation. She grabbed that stone before she went in. She was smart to know her limitations. Unlike our naive heroine who dashed in to commit homicide!

I am worried that the writer might sacrifice her in the end.

  2. You’re right. ChaeWon > the heroine

But which one do you mean? Who do you think the writer will kill off: Chae Won or the main female lead?
(I’m watching too many kdramas. I can’t remember the names anymore!)

I haven’t watched last week’s episode so I haven’t posted anything. Will do it tonight.

But I so agree: the heroine was unhinged to go off like that without a back-up plan. She’s probably feeling “empowered” because of what she heard through her sister’s hearing aid — that she and ONLY she could kill the Woman in Red. That plus her worry that DaIl would get killed (wait, he’s already dead!!!) or hurt by phantom pains (he really should toughen up soon) compelled her to go on her suicide mission alone.

She really needs to calm down. To take a chill pill and sleep for 24 hours. 😂

I so dislike impetuosity and foolhardiness in a kdrama heroine because it sends the message and reinforces the stereotype that women react to situations EMOTIONALLY rather than logically.
