Fluttering Alert: The Morning After

Normally, I would find it brazen for a girl to invite herself to a man’s home after sharing one kiss. Wait until the third kiss, my dear. lol.

But I didn’t mind at all when YooJung pretended as if it was a spur-of-the-moment decision to spend time at WooHyun’s apartment. Before her Unnie could figure out what she was up to, she had retrieved her little red rolling suitcase secretly stowed away in the trunk of her van.

“This won’t do. If you’re not going to my house today, I’ll at least be your caretaker for the day.”

With that red carry-on luggage, YJ reminded me of an eager Little Red Riding Hood going off to bring her granny a basket of food. I knew the wolf was waiting for her at the (love) shack but did I care? Nope. The more high jinks with the wolf, the better. 😈

Or course her Unnie wasn’t deceived. It took master planning to pack a bag AND reschedule appointments. Make no mistake: this was premeditated occupation by YJ of WH’s turf.

She insisted that staying with him was the right thing to do because she indirectly caused his injury.  She was a person of “conscience” who felt guilty for getting him stabbed. However, it was clear to us that she was eager to be the handmaid of atonement because she wanted to continue where they had left off the previous day.

lol. Look at those big “innocent” eyes. How can anybody say no to that?

Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), WH wasn’t a wolf. He was very much a man — and a gentleman at that. He questioned the propriety of having her in his house unchaperoned.

WH: I’m a man. How could a man and a woman be alone?
YJ: We’re not a man and a woman right now. We’re patient and caretaker.
WH: You don’t worry about what other people think? They’ll have a lot of say about it.
YJ: We’re in the middle of a public, passionate relationship right now. On top of that, you’re my life saver. Doing something like this is a given.
WH: ??? (speechlessly rubs his forehead)

Arguing with her gave him a headache because she didn’t make sense. Did you see it?

One second she was reassuring him not to worry because her presence in his apartment was simply altruistic, that is, patient-caregiver, not man-and-woman.

Then the next second, she contradicted herself, telling him that the general public were well-aware that they were in a passionate liaison. Especially since he saved her, people expected her to express gratitude in a loving and lover-ly way.

See the contradiction? Basically, she was telling them they were patient-and-caregiver AND man-and-woman.

lol. Her reasoning of course left him scratching his head but it was prudent for him to just walk away.

He ignored her demand to bring her the clothes he was going to change into so she could help him wear them. I’m sure that order scared him. There was no way he’d let her do that.

He barely had the energy to tell use to use his study when she called out one last thing, “Which room should I use? I need to change into comfortable clothes.”

He just wanted to retreat from this person who invaded his space. To me, YJ no longer looked like Little Red Riding Hood here. She resembled more the devious wolf pretending to be granny.

To her this was a victory. “Look how he’s not actually telling me to leave.”

She wore him down with her adorkable way.

She made no bones about wanting to hang around with him. She thought they had “leveled up” after the kiss, and she thought he was only acting self-conscious and shy when he didn’t want to bring up their kiss.

His behavior puzzled her in van on the way to his home. She wondered:

Does he not remember? (To me, she was skeptical and disbelieving, like, “Oh, come on now! Surely you remember the kiss. How could you forget the kiss?)

Is he acting like this because other people are around? (She thought that he was being distant because he didn’t want people to know that they had kissed.)

What if once we get alone, he suddenly…? (She was imagining him proposing because they kissed.)

lol. If she had been truly worried about a confession from him, then she wouldn’t have insisted on accompanying him home and spending time with him. To me, she wanted that proposal.

Thus, sweeping the floor was just an excuse to wait for him to mention the kiss. She was sweeping energetically, just like the first time she was at his place. Back then, she had been waiting for him to relent and to give her a ride back home. Now, she wanted him to make the first move so they could move forward in their relationship.

That’s why she was in a snit when he sounded unsure of the events of the previous day.

WH: When did you leave yesterday?
YJ: When you were moved to the admitting room. You were asleep the whole time, so I left.
WH: (Was it really a dream? But it felt too real to be a dream.)
YJ: (If he doesn’t know when I was there, then I guess he really doesn’t remember.)
WH: You know, parents, before their anesthesia wears off, they tend to talk about this and that. They can even spill secrets recklessly. Did I make any kind of mistake?

WH was defensive. He thought she was pretending that the kiss didn’t happen because she was angry that he dared to kiss her.

YJ: (Mistake? What’s this? He remembers but it was a mistake?)

See that? YJ was quite confident that he remembered the kiss. Now, however, she was beginning to feel that he was denying the incident in order to back out of a commitment with her.

YJ: (Is that how he wants to play this?)

I loved how she clenched her hands into a fist like she wanted to punch him.

WH: Or maybe I said something really dumb?
YJ: Why? Do you remember making a mistake?
WH: If I remembered, I wouldn’t have asked you. I’m asking you because I don’t remember a thing.
YJ: You probably don’t remember anything because you didn’t do anything that was a mistake, right?

She was accusing him of conveniently forgetting because he DID kiss her. His amnesia was just an excuse to forget the incident.

And she stopped sweeping just right that. lol.

Later, they reassessed their situation again.

WH: (No matter how good of actress she is, if that really happened last night,it would be difficult for her to act like this…like nothing happened.)
YJ: (It’s not like he’s an actor. If he remembered what happened last night, there’s no way he could act like nothing happened.)

They both decided that they were going to give each other the benefit of the doubt. They would believe that the other person was telling the truth that he/she didn’t recall a kiss.

Both of them: Right, let’s forget about it. Nothing happened.

It was funny that both characters wanted the kiss to be real but they worried that the other person might not have wanted to be kissed. They were dancing around the issue so they wouldn’t impose their unrequited (or what they thought were unrequited) feelings on the other person.

I’m always a fan of this kind of zippy dialogue where the characters are at cross-purposes. He says, she says, and neither one says the exact truth. If the writer can make the set-up work, like he/she did in this scene, then it’s like watching a pas-de-deux of wits and words.

  1. “… it’s like watching a pas-de-deux of wits and words.”

Your anatomy of this scene has just helped me pinpoint one of the reasons why I adore this couple so much. As a small child, I loved watching classic movies on the TV with my mother. For me, those screwballs of Hollywood’s “Golden Age” remain the epitome of romantic comedies. “It Happened One Night,” “His Girl Friday,” “My Favorite Wife,” “Ball of Fire,” “The Lady Eve,” “My Man Godfrey”—the dialogue zips and zings as the lovers fall or re-fall in love.

    Good stuff!

  2. I was wondering if you would recap this scene! I am so delighted that you did.

I enjoyed the dialogue as I found it really entertaining.. As the two of them were cautiously trying not to get caught by the other party..YJ to me is behaving differently from her usual self…she is usually able to call out the true intentions of the other person… But here she did not.

I find YJ an interesting character and hope her character can continue to grow in depth…

At times, she is that romantic who seems like this dainty princess waiting for her knight in Shiny Armour. In the episode when she bumped into WH in the hotel before her press conference, she is secretly asking herself what she should do if he says he wants to be her fake boyfriend. In this episode, she is imagining a confession from him and is wondering what she should do.

At times, she is this sensible mature lady who says the wisest thing to WH.At the breakfast table the morning after the hangover, when he was trying out clothes she prepared for him, when she is in the hospital..

At times, she is this fun-loving friend or sister.. Even she played around with SH or hugging her brother.

At times, she is the brooding lady with emotional scars… The way she shares about her scar or when she visits her mum at the cemetery.

At times, she is the responsible actress who will ensure her image is maintained as many people’s lives depend on her. Did you notice that she will make sure she looks goodbefore she face the public or someone she does not know…

  3. Don’t forget “Pillow Talk” with Rock Hudson and Doris Day. And anything with Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy.

Working on the Fluttering Moments for Episode 6 right now. Just have to finish up my Thanksgiving list. 😀

  4. Yes, to this one, Anna.

I’ll post your comment on my blog so people can comment on it.

  5. I love them both as a couple they are awkward in such a nice way, I like what they say and what they do not express with words.

WH: (No matter how good of actress she is, if that really happened last night,it would be difficult for her to act like this…like nothing happened.)

YJ: (It’s not like he’s an actor. If he remembered what happened last night, there’s no way he could act like nothing happened.)

Here we are with the kiss like Natti Natasha’s song with Thalia: But I do not remember, I do not remember. And if I do not remember, it did not happen. That did not happen. ja ja ja.

  6. @fary: Your musical reference to No Me Acuerdo is spot-on. Ha!

  7. Love how YJ was ever ready in anticipation that WH wouldn’t want any help AGAIN after being discharged from the hospital. She even bought him clothes! How did you know his size? Hmm? 🙂

She’s so ready she’s packed her own cute red bag to pack her clothes and changed into to become the carer of her sick patient.

She really is kind but I think she was overwhelmed with worry and because for the first time in her life, a man got hurt because of her and she really is starting to like him.

I think she did very well in helping WH to get into his tshirt, cleaning, cooking food and hanging the laundry except the underwear 😉

  8. I don’t know how she knew the size of his underpants but she knew the size of his shirt and pants because she had him try on clothes before they had their first “staged” date.

But the more important question for me is how did she knew whether to get him boxers or briefs?? 😉

  9. LOL! How did she know? hahaha

Maybe she just brought him clothes and not underwear in that hospital scene. Just for going home I mean. But then, oh it is important to change your underwear!

OMG! I’ll drive home now before I get censored! 🤣

I will be back later!!! 😉
