Love O2O: Episode 17 Highlights

1. How evil is Nai?

I love this showdown with KO.

It would appear as if KO was the one who issued Nai the challenge to find his cell phone number but it was in fact Nai who baited him.

KO: You don’t find it odd that I have your number?
Nai: It’s no big deal. Just like you may be using blocking software, but I can still find your cell number.
KO: Is that so? Why don’t you try? You have half an hour.

An hour later.

KO: You lost. I waited an hour.
Nai: 192-6786-6786, five minutes.
KO: Five minutes? You hacked the phone company?
Nai: No. I told them I’m being harassed by an unknown caller. Their customer service is good.
KO: Then why didn’t you call me?
Nai: Because I think it torments you when I don’t call.

Sigh. Yes, we all know what Nai was talking about. It’s been immortalized in a song.

Nai used reverse psychology on KO. Because Nai ignored him, KO sought his attention. He challenged Nai to a PK-version in hacking.

KO: Midnight tonight. WCTF Geek Competition. Are you game?
Nai: What do you mean?
KO: We sign up together. If I lose, I’ll work for you for a year, for free. I think you really need the help. (Reading between the lines, he wanted Nai to hire him.)
Nai: You know a lot about our company, however, a good hacker isn’t necessarily a good programmer. (He used reverse psychology again. He suggested that KO wouldn’t be a good programmer anyway so why bother?)
KO: I’ll decided if that’s the case. What? Are you afraid?
Nai: Reverse psychology is my favorite. (He let KO know that calling him a coward wasn’t going to work.) Whoever solves the most challenges wins.
KO: Okay.
Nai: Good. I can challenge their record, (he knew it was KO’s record) while I’m at it.

It was obvious that Nai had the upper hand here in the offensive.

4. The poem

Love O2O: Episode 17 Poetry

Thanks to @nrllee for researching the poem for us and translating the info from Chinese. That’s what I call dedication, my friend, since you aren’t even watching this. 😂

Disclaimer – My Chinese is not so extensive that it encompasses Poetry (which is another level altogether). This is where the line comes from though

https://baike.baidu.com/item/陌上花开,可缓缓归矣/10547656?fr=aladdin

I typed in the Chinese in Google and the link to Baidu gave me this response. Turns out lots of people tried to find out where that line came from back in 2016(?) when the drama aired.

Anyway translated it is about a Chinese legend/folklore regarding Emperor (?) QianLiu and his Wife whom he adored. She missed her hometown and Mother a lot and he granted her permission to visit (I think she made like a yearly pilgrimage back around winter time). Anyway, he loved her so much he would pine for her when she was away. Legend has it that on one such occasion after he had finished dealing with Palace duties, he walked out looking at the mountainside and the Cherry blossoms were starting to bloom (😂❤️ WonDeuk trigger), and he was so overcome with thoughts of her that he penned these lines in a letter to her. Like you intimated, he longed for her but understood that she needed to be where she was but nonetheless, he ached that they were apart…Awww 💕

***************

Just want to add that this scenario in the story with QianLiu was very unusual. It was generally expected that once you entered the Palace, you were pretty much confined to a life within the Palace (it was an unwritten rule). QianLiu must have loved her so much, he was willing to break with convention and go above and beyond for her by indulging her at great expense to himself.

5. Weiwei’s elopement

To me, even before Friend #1 Old Man teased her about eloping, Weiwei’s return did appear like an elopement. Look at it this way:

When Nai told her to buy the plane ticket with the money, he was asking her to run away with him. When she avoided her parents’ scoldings, she knew they wouldn’t approve of their marriage…errr… union. When she made hurried plans to stay at Xiaoling’s apartment, she was planning a sudden flight away from her parents’ home. When she lied about the receiving an internship, she was being secretive about her elopement. When she bought new clothes, she was buying her trousseau. When she received the key to her Xiaoling’s apartment, she was involving her friend in her elopement, too. When she reassured her father who was fretting that he was unable to pack her necessities, she was telling him not to worry about a dowry. When she dropped that book of poetry, and her dad was curious about it, she looked guilty as if her secret communication with Nai had been discovered. (Yes, poetry was their secret language. hahaha) When she soothed her father’s sadness that he couldn’t be around to take care of her, she could barely contain her happiness that she was eloping with Nai.

See that? She was behaving like a girl who’s eloping.

At its simplest definition, an elopement means getting married without telling the parents. Without her parents’ knowledge, Weiwei was running away from them to return to her online husband.

So kudos to Friend #1 Old Man for introducing her as a “family member”

and for recognizing a VIRTUAL elopement when he saw one. 😂👍👍

6. Her internal monologue.

I like the internal monologues in this scene because we didn’t have to guess what she was feeling. We knew because we were told every step of the way.

After getting off the taxi
Weiwei: I didn’t tell Dashen when I’d be back. If I just show up, I wonder if he’ll be surprised or startled. (grinning) Whatever, I just want to shock him.

At seeing the elevator
Weiwei: I understand workers have Saturday off, but why must the elevator be off, too?

Reaching Nai’s floor
Weiwei: The elevator’s fixed?

Encountering Friend #1
Weiwei: (shock!)

Listening to the conversation
Weiwei: What the heck? Didn’t Dashen say he would be here alone today? That’s why I came straight here. What’s going on? Not only is Yugong here, these people are also here to see Dashen. Maybe I should just slip away now.

After being introduced as a collegue’s family.
Weiwei: Why do I feel like I’m being caught eloping?

Finally, she spoke!
#1: Ms Weiwei, are you eloping or something?
Weiwei: Eloping? This is obviously a public performance.
#1: Your performance is very shocking.

This was what she meant: An elopement, by nature, is done in secret. Given that so many people saw and knew that she was there in Nai’s office, she couldn’t be eloping.  Instead, her presence there was a public spectacle…or a disaster for her.

Meeting Nai
Nai: Come with me.
Weiwei: He’s so calm. He isn’t surprised at all. And he’s walking so fast. Is he in a hurry to get me settled so he can see to his guests? THAT is the proper thing to do but couldn’t he have at least welcome me?

One Comment On “Love O2O: Episode 17 Highlights”

  1. That song Call Me Maybe is so cute when my 3 year old niece sings it. 🙂

It was pretty much an elopement alright especially with her suitcase. Mind you, she said she’s received an internship but she didn’t even ask Nai about it till episode 18. I know Nai wouldn’t say no anyway. hehehe And yes she got introduced as a family member. Just shows she really did miss him too! A lot! 😍
