He’s Psychometric: Episode 4 Random Notes

As much as I like the relationships between JiSoo and Prosecutor Kang SungMo, and Lee Ahn and his classmate JaeIn, I’m keeping tabs on the cross-relationships: Jisoo+Lee Ahn and SungMo+Jaein.

If I didn’t suspect SungMo of hiding a dark secret about the apartment fire, I’d eye his preoccupation with Jaein as reminiscent of Reply 1997. The Hyung had a love interest for the lead female in the drama which threw off the budding romance of the younger set. I hope this drama writer doesn’t intend to do the same love triangle with Lee Ahn, Jaein and SungMo.

As for Jisoo’s Unnie relationship with Lee Ahn, I find it entertaining that Jisoo would get on Lee Ahn’s case for not being textbook smart since Lee Ahn would mock her relentlessly, too, for being dumb about her crush on his Hyung. Pot, meet kettle.

Take for instance their conversation in the apartment:

Ahn: I loved that rooftop so much. It’s nice and cool in the winter, and scorching hot in the summer. Because it’s wide open, you have to worry about invasion of privacy, too. The view there is the best in the country…Wow! This is our place?
JiSoo: Now it finally feels like a house a prosecutor would live in.
SM: To be exact, it’s an investment. It’s embarrassing to say it’s mine because my share is so small. (meaning the bank still owned it)
Ahn: I’m embarrassed too. I’d feel more comfortable staying in a tenement house.
SM: (stopping him) I told you before right? You’re my— (offering a fist bump)
Ahn: Virtue.
Jisoo: (misheard it) Bean rice cake? Why are you his bean rice cake?
Ahn: I just am.
Jisoo: What’s this? Is this your newlywed home or something?

Here, I think she was teasing the two brothers for their lovey-dovey conversation.) Anyway, this is my housewarming gift.

SM: Thank you.
Ahn: What’s that? Did you guys just connect mentally or did you plan this?
Jisoo: That’s right! I was planning on ordering chicken too. (Jisoo was OBVIOUSLY jumping at the chance to make herself a “couple” with SangMo.

SM: Eat first. I’m going to wash up real quick.
Ahn: Okay. Wash slowly because there two chicken legs. (lol. He meant that Hyung should take his time so he could eat all the legs while Hyung was gone. He grabbed one piece.)
SM: I didn’t think this through. I should eat first then wash up.
Ahn: (eyeing his noona) But what is this? That girly-girl type of outfit.

Jisoo: Ahh. I went to visit my dad and then I came from a blind date. (She looked at SungMo to see if he’d show sign of jealousy or at least interest about the news of her blind date.)
Ahn: Okay! Then I’ll do a cold reading now. (lol. Like Sherlock Holmes.) Seeing that your face is a little red, you already had one round of beer. Seeing how you bought 10 cans of beer, the blind date didn’t go well.  (I doubt that her face was red because of the beer. She was probably blushing because of the whole situation.)
Jisoo: (glancing at SungMo) Nope it went really well. He completely fell for me.

She and SungMo glanced at each other. She really had a hangdog expression here. That’s why SungMo gave her the piece of chicken to cheer her up. Kinda like Lee Ahn giving his puppy a piece of chicken.

SM: (feeling pity, offered her the leg of chicken) You? (she took it although she was annoyed)
Ahn: I see. I guess the blind date went well.
Jisoo: (counter-attacking) What about your test?
Ahn: Enough about the test. Do you know Seohyun Patrol Division by chance?
Jisoo: Yes. That’s our precinct. Why?
Ahn: Really?
Jisoo: Why? What are you up to?

He told them that Jaein works there and Jisoo complimented Jaein.

Jisoo: Figures. Nowadays as soon as you graduate high school, there are a lot of people who bypass college and just prepare for official work. Everyone is so impressive at such a young age, aren’t they?? Very different from someone I know.

I laughed at his face when he gave his noona a stink-eye. That’s a mean-looking stink-eye.

SungMo left them to change out of work clothes. (I’m ignoring the shower scene.) See that scene? That’s what I mean that this could be interpreted as SungMo being attached to Jaein romantically instead of guiltily. TvN is famous for these love triangles/husband-guessing games (Case in point: stupidest plots ever of 2018: “Mama Fairy and the Woodcu
tter,” “A Poem a Day”) and it if pulls a stunt again like that here in “He’s Psychometric,” I’m outta here.

Meanwhile, out in the living room, Lee Ahn and his noona were commiserating about first love.

Ahn: I’m still in this state without a degree or a job. But she became so cool.
JS: They say first love is like that. Just like the taste of beer, it’s bitter (she burped!) and nauseating the more you think about it.

lol. That was one of Jisoo’s flaw. She talked about poo and burped in front of these guys.

Ahn: Why are you sentiment today?
JS: Sentimental. MENTAL.
Ahn: There’s something going on, huh? If you don’t explain it thoroughly, I can figure it out myself.
JS: Where does your evidence-less confidence come from? You only see useless things.

I think the subber meant Ahn’s baseless or unfounded confidence. How could he be this confident when he hadn’t achieved anything.

Ahn: I don’t know about anyone else but you’re so transparent with me like DaeBong so my psychometry works well on you guys. I’m doing it.
JS: Fine. If I’m going to get caught and be embarrassed, I might as well confess and go from there. (she looked at SM’s room, probably to check that it was still closed.)
Ahn: I confessed to Prosecutor Kang and got rejected.
JS: Again?!
Ahn: What do you mean, again? You knew?

In a flashback:
Younger Sungmo: There’s a rumor going around at the station that you and I are dating.
Younger Jisoo: Only at the station? It’s spreading across the district. I mean, unlike the way you treat other people, you treat me comfortably and we’re seen close together really often so people keep saying we look good together. (shyly) So I was thinking…at this opportunity…how about we not leave it as a misunderstanding and just… (NOOOOOO!!!! She was going to suggest that they “just date”.)
Younger Sungmo: Sorry. We really did spend a lot of time together without boundaries, huh? I didn’t think this through. I’ll place some distance between us. You get back safely.

lol. Sungmo tended to say “I didn’t think this through” when he was made an error. That indicated to me that he had a cautious personality.

Ahn: (laughing) I was so traumatized because I only saw that about you for the longest time. (Hmmm…how did he find out? Did he do it by “reading” Jisoo back then? I highly doubt that Sungmo would have confided in him about that awkward moment with Jisoo.) But you confessed again? That will is amazing. You’re so cool, Eun Jisoo.
JS: Shut up! If you knew, you should’ve told me that you knew! (So Jisoo didn’t tell him either. He found out by “reading” her. lol.)
Ahn: Is there any who doesn’t know you like him? “I like him” is written all over your face. You’re always chasing around to eat and drink. Even today. You got rejected but why are you here? So embarrassing.

I like how he lectured her here. This was more ego-deflating than her insults earlier that he was a bum after all this time.

JS: You guys said you moved and you took your exam today….
Ahn: I’m always your excuse, huh?
JS: Fine, just go ahead and ignore my efforts. Don’t you know how much I think about you?
Ahn: You really came here for me? Really? Without a single bit of dishonesty?
JS: (she couldn’t say anything so she took a sip of beer)
Ahn: (mimicking her) “No. My blind date went so well.” “He completely fell for me.”

He nailed the pouty facial expression and the sulky tone of voice.

Ahn: Those lies… (looking toward his Hyung’s room) We saw right through them.
JS: (dismayed) Really? (He nodded.) I’m so embarrassed (hanging her head). I’m leaving.
Ahn: You should ask my brother to drive you home. If you keep doing embarrassing things, you eventually get desensitized.
JS: Forget it. (About to hit him)
Ahn: I’m not seeing you out.

That’s why I’m enjoying this kdrama. Although this show is a thriller, the playful banter of the lead character balances the gruesome aspects so I’m not wearied by the end of the hour.  All the characters had a good chemistry.

But there are other things that happened in Ep 4 I’m going to keep an eye on in the upcoming episodes. My bitchy sense tell me these scenes weren’t shot for nothing.

1. The murderer smiled at the sight of young Jaein sleeping at her father’s place of work.

Either he smiled because he had a malicious intention for Jaein or he was genuinely amused at the sight of a child peacefully sleeping and wrapped up in her father’s big jacket. If the latter is the case, then it may upend the theory that he’s the evil person who kept the young SungMo chained in the bathroom. It could also have been SungMo’s mom who chained him and the evil guy released him. lol.

We shall have to wait and see how the story develops, right?

2. Jaein’s friend, SoHyun, worked as a preschool teacher. Who was taking care of her toddler?

This sounded ominous. I hope the murderer didn’t have a vendetta against working mothers.

3. Rooms 702 and 701

The witness Kim Gap Yong and the missing attendant Kang Hee Sook are of course relevant to the story. But I thought the room number was interesting, too.

The fires in the YongSong apartments started in Room 702. The HanMin nursing home both started in the Room 701. But Kim Gap Yong’s insurance client whom he purportedly was visiting the day of the fire was in Room 702.

Apartment 702 in the YungSung Apartment Case

Room 701 in the Hanmin Fire

Lee Ahn saw the number 701, too, but he dismissed it as irrelevant. He thought, “A room filled with fire and smoke. We know that they were killed before the arson. So this fact means nothing. I need a crucial clue.”

Instead he chose to share the numbers of the bra size. But in view of his Hyung’s perspective that Lee Ahn didn’t know yet how to handle his psychometry, and he could only see the small portion of the big picture, then perhaps withholding even this small piece of info could have been a missed opportunity.

The witness Kim Ga Byung appeared to be hiding the missing nursing attendant of room 701, Kang Hee Sook (or Kang YiSook). She wore the silver ring in Lee Ahn’s vision.

But Kim Ga Byung registered her under an alias.

I’m lousy with Korean names so I took screenshots for me to remember who’s who.

  1. I think killer is SungMo’s Brother? There were 2 chains bolted to the wall. One was shackled to SungMo. Who was shackled to the other? 4 table settings – why bother putting a 4th body there – go through all that effort and then staging the 4th person? If the 4th body was positively identified by SungMo as his mother then unless she was a resident or a friend of those other 3 ladies it would’ve looked odd? She was escaping with the bag when she caught sight of the killer coming into the building maybe? So I am guessing family of 4. Potentially mother ran away leaving the boys. Boys shackled by father to prevent them from running away? SungMo lives in fear that he would turn into his brother so he has adopted DongSaeng Ahn act as his conscience? That would sort of explain why the killer smiled when saw the sleeping JaeIn at the guardhouse. She had drawn a picture with ‘I love Daddy’ on it. Just thinking out loud. But I am with you – I don’t think SungMo is the baddie. And I adore Jisoo – totally giving me Sandra Bullock and Ms Congeniality vibes 😀. The threesome dynamic I actually prefer is the 3 of them. The JaeIn-Ahn-SungMo threesome can’t hold a candle to it.

The eww moment I have is that Ahn touches the carcasses with his bare hands then does nothing to clean/wash them after? And ditto when he wades in the river and touches everything there too and then goes about as usual even though he kept talking about seeing poop?? Sorry I am no germaphobe but that’s just gross. 😂

  2. Oh! Does Sungmo have a brother?

Wait! The fourth body wasn’t Sungmo’s mom, ok, but the body he had stashed in the luggage. But we can’t tell which of the four bodies he claimed as his fake mom. I am assuming it’s the body in the luggage because it would be the hardest to trace/identify (if it was decomposing inside the luggage) we’re not sure yet.

There were plenty of ewww moments. The booger under the teacher’s table was nauseating of course. So was kissing the lock pad to “read” the code.

The director of this drama was the director of Hwayyugi. 😂

  3. No…just my overactive imagination – I just thought he had a Brother…😂. Looks more like his dad now as the episodes unfold.

Re the PD – O really? I didn’t finish Hwayugi. It just got stranger and more bizarre as the drama progressed. I stayed for zombie girl. When she died, my interest died with her 😂

Yes to the Eww moments… I just try to ‘move along’ and forget it… 😂
