Jeong Tae Eul, Lieutenant Jeong

• Born 27 May 1990
• Her KOC doppelgänger is Luna.
• Her National Police Agency ID card pulled out of savior’s pocket by Crown Prince Lee Gon during assassination. Card issued 2019.11.11.
• Police officer; works for Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, Jongno Station, Violent Crimes Division, Squad Three
• Has a filthy temper, per co-worker and friend Kang Shin Jae.
• Has a good sense of smell.
• Excellent fighting skills
• Violent Crimes Division: “You can’t get promoted, the pay’s bad, you get hurt, you get disciplined for everything.”

• Cusses
• Often ties up her long hair in a ponytail, particularly when she’s frustrated with LG.
• Was Jo Eun Seob’s senior in high school.
• Nicknamed herself Princess Diana
• Loves chicken and beer. Loves meat. Loves MSD (beer & soju mixed). Loves beer.
• Wants evidence before she believes. “I’m the type of person who still can’t believe the Earth is round.”
• Sense of duty: “You only need that when you have to save the country.”
• Helps LG even if she doesn’t believe him. “There’s no reason. I just do it.”
• She and her father have a loving, but contentious relationship. They squabble.
• Her mother had run the Taekwondo Centre with her father, and had been a well liked Taekwondo instructor, but had died of cancer when TE was 5 years old.
• She entered high school January 2006. Bukchon High.
• She wanted double eyelid surgery when she was in high school.
• Met Shin Jae in April 2006, trying to drum up business for the taekwondo center. He saw her sitting in the window, then came for lessons.
• Was a taekwondo instructor in her father’s center. Five tenants of taekwondo: courtesy, perseverance, integrity, self-control, and indomitable spirit. Was Shin Jae’s initial instructor.
• Black belt in taekwondo. The belt belonged to her mother.

• Photo of Tae Eul and her dad with Shin Jae when he celebrated his graduation from high school.
• Photo of Tae Eul with her dad at her high school graduation includes Shin Jae in military fatigues.
• In 2016 LG ordered JY to investigate Lieutenant Jeong Tae Eul. Nothing found in KOC databases.
• Didn’t know that all the time LG was in ROK the first time, he’d visit her father at the taekwondo center.
• Doesn’t know much about car maintenance.
• Not comfortable just accepting the obvious evidence in the Lee Sang Do murder investigation. She feels “like someone planned all this.” Wants to continue investigating.
• With Shin Jae gets into a street fight with a gang whose boss used to be Shin Jae’s school mate, whom Shin Jae sent to jail three years ago. Lee Gon joins the fight with his riding crop and beats down the combatants.

• Even when she and SJ were greatly outnumbered by gang members, TE remained confident and calm. She told SJ, “You can rely on me.”
• LG asked TE why she became a cop, because it is dangerous to be a cop. She said, “Not everyone in the world can be brave. So I decided to become brave.”
• When LG said goodbye to her, telling her he was going back to his world, she was abrupt and dismissive. She confirmed LG should say goodbye and not wait for her to get off work, because she would be working late. Instead, she went shopping with Na Ri.
• When she was a young child, she watched a police show with her father instead of watching typical girly fare. As she watched the show, she wanted to be a cop.
• TE has been friends with Eun Sub since she was three.
• Arrived at the Palace in KOC around 8pm. That’s when HCL Noh restricted access to Gwangyeongjeon (the king’s personal residence) from everyone in the palace.
• When she was given the chance to wander in KOC, she took a train from Busan to Seoul to see if she could find parallels of her police co-workers and her family members. At the KOC Seoul Jongno Police Station, she met the KOC parallels of Chief Park and Detective Shim, but they didn’t recognize her, nor did they know the names Kang Shin Jae, Jangmi, or Director Kim Hee Ju from Forensics.
• When she didn’t have enough money to buy a train ticket from Seoul back to Busan, phoned the Royal Court’s main number 17 times asking to speak to the King. She said she was Princess Diana. She didn’t know JY had been following her on LG’s orders: “He said you must be kept alive until your beheading.” JY hadn’t disclosed his presence or offered her money for a train ticket back to Busan.

• The only memories TE has of her mother are from when TE was five. Her mother was sick. TE hoped to find the KOC parallel of her mother so she could just watch her from afar.
• When PM Koo tries to find out why LG landed his helicopter in Seoul unexpectedly, and who TE is, TE did shake Koo’s hand offered in introduction. She appealed to Koo’s vanity, “I’m a big fan.” She didn’t give her name when asked: “I’m a traveler. I’m honored just to be able to see you like this. I’m leaving soon. This is my first time in the Kingdom of Corea. I feel like I’m in a storybook.”
• When SJ as a high schooler was being beaten by schoolmates, TE called the police and then beat up all six of the bullies when they tried to stop her.
• TE convinced SJ to come back to the taekwondo center after his beating and continue his training.
• Her first visit to KOC was about 24 hours, from around 8pm until the following night.
• “He [LG] said he would come back soon, but he didn’t come back for a long time. I wasn’t holding my phone as if I was waiting for someone. I was just waiting on Earth, which has become slightly rounder. There was no way I could know what was happening in his world. Because he was a person who was beyond one and zero.”
• In ROK, planted in a pot “Imaginary Flower” seeds she’d bought in KOC. Remembers she’d also sowed them on the path in unknown dimension, despite LG reminding her that there’s no wind, no rain, no sun, and no time there, so flowers wouldn’t grow. TE said, “We don’t know that if no one has sown seeds yet.”
• Orders Lee Sang Do’s wife to be put on the wanted list. Tells Jangmi to do a missing person’s search for her, note if her children are transferred from their current school.
• Figured out the source of the news reports on Lee Sang Do’s burner phone voicemail was KOC, recognized Professor Lee Jon In is Prince Buyeong. Is shocked.
• Junior to SJ as a police officer.
• Asks SJ if he trusts her. He does. But she hesitates to tell him anything about KOC as it relates to Lee Sang Do murder. “There’s something, but it’s more like science fiction. I will tell you when it becomes science.”
• LL takes and develops photo of her with SJ.
• TE is less accurate than SJ at quick firing a revolver at distance.
• Graduated from National Police University.
• Wants to take the promotion test.
• Wordlessly runs to LG and hugs him when she sees he’s returned (his third time in ROK).
• Calls LG “Mr. Lee.” JY finds that offensive. LG says he’s missed how they treated him in ROK. TE used to call him just “Hey” and “Mister.”
• Says her pay is chicken feed.
• Bought LG an ROK phone. Saved in it the numbers of the five people who will help him “regardless of anything in this world.” One of the numbers she saved is for Sin Jae, because he “is one of the most trustworthy people.”
• When LG asks TE if she’s one of the most trustworthy people, she says, “For me, the citizens come first.”
• LG says he always wanted to try just a normal daily life with ES: “Call you…Chat on the phone…Ask you what you did today…And tell you that I missed you a lot.”
• TE proves that she’s a much better shot at the arcade than LG, knocking down seven targets in seven shots.
• “Shooting is the act of filling the void between me and the target. It’s too late if you shoot after you look. You need to look after you shoot.”
• “I waited for you as a detective, but also as myself all this time.” LG is concerned when he hears this statement, asking, “Has something happened? Were you threatened by someone?” TE: “I guess that means it will happen. That’s why you came.” She’s worried. She may be thinking about her conversation with Na Ri about doppelgangers, one always killing the other. She asks LG questions that confirm the voicemail recordings on Lee Sang Do’s phone were from KOC. Her summary, “We’re screwed.”
• About the recordings from murder-victim Lee Sang Do’s phone that TE discovered are from KOC: “…I thought about just covering it up [no one will believe it; it’s dangerous]. But if I cover it up, then no one will ever find out about this since there would be only two people who know about this. Me and the culprit. The two worlds shouldn’t get mixed up like this. They’re supposed to stay on their respective paths. But the two worlds are already colliding, and I’ve discovered it. So what else could I do? I decided to investigate. I’m a police officer in the Republic of Korea.”
• LG’s two requests of TE: “Don’t tell me not to come, and don’t tell me not to leave. I have to go back sometimes, and when I do, I want to come back soon. Whichever it is, if you tell me not to come or leave, I don’t think I’ll be able to do anything. So I’m asking you not to get exhausted.”
• Receives report on Lee Seong Jae, LL’s ROK doppleganger. Also contains info on deaths of his brother by hit-and-run and nephew in an accident. She realizes the nephew was Lee Gon’s ROK parallel.
• Visits Yangsun Care Center
• Thinking to herself: “Parallel worlds, same faces, same ID card, balance…Where did my new ID card disappear to? Who is keeping the balance?”
• “I should’ve know that day when I was wondering where my ID card went…That Lee Lim is alive and the two worlds are getting mixed up. At least at the moment when I sensed the transcendental power that was trying to restore balance…I should’ve known before we had to face this situation. That it’s something like fate, so to speak.”
• Scolds LG for not contacting her before moving to the hotel. One of the 17 things she asked of him is to contact her before going anywhere. She doesn’t know LG tried to go to a budaejjigae restaurant with JY and they got into a fight with the gangsters, which was witnessed by Chief Park and Detective Shim. JY pretended to be ES, and introduced LG as his friend from Busan.
• TE: “The very first time you came here…Would you still have fallen for me even if I had never helped you?” LG: “I would’ve understood. And that understanding would’ve led me to fall for you.” TE: “What if I was super rude to you? Still the same?” LG: “You were. Yes, still.” TE: “Why?” LG: “Because you must’ve had your reason.” [voiceover, see below] …LG: “Why do you ask?” TE: “In the beginning, you ask about everything. We just skipped too many things.”
• [TE voiceover]: “It took me a long time to realize this. When it’s fate, there are no coincidences. Your fate is determined by the choices you make, but there are times when your fate chooses you.”
• “I haven’t eaten yet, so I’m irritable now. I’ll add one more into the 17 rules. No cheesy comments when I’m hungry.”
• [TE voiceover]: Things that are bound to happen are taking place even at this moment. I was struck with a sad premonition that this will be short-lived, but I decided to love my fate that chose me.” TE turns back to LG and tells him, “I love you.” LG looks stunned, is speechless. TE switches the subject to Yeong’s location. LG tries to talk, is flustered. As TE gets into her car, LG says, “Jeong Tae Eul. I also.” TE starts to drive away, stops, rolls down her window, and says, “So you heard what I said.” That could be in reference to her declaration of love, or instruction for him to get JY back to the hotel. She’s smiling as she drives away.
• TE and Jangmi are doing a stakeout together. It is Jangmi’s first stakeout. He wonders if the murder victim knew she’d die like that. TE: “Did you know many cops commit suicide?…You’ll see countless more cases like this going forward. Work is work. We do our best to investigate every case. When the case is closed, we have to do our best to forget about it and move on, or you can’t do this for a long time.”
• As she’s seeing him off after he’s been released, the boyfriend of the murder victim says he wishes she’d died a few days later, since he was going to break up with her. TE slugs him in the face. When he objects, she smacks his chest and says, “Hey. Be respectful to the deceased. Get lost, or I’ll punch you again. I need to close this case and move on too.”
• Is miffed when LG admits he briefly sent JY to tail her at work. “You think I’m being like this for having him tail me?…You should’ve done it yourself. Why send someone else?”
• Ep 11 TE remembers meeting LG of the future. Her voiceover: “I could tell that he was from a different time, not a different world. Perhaps that was the day when I made up my mind about a lot of things.
• She remembers her encounter with future LG while looking at the lion key chain. “Am I being dumped like this No way. I’ll teach you a lesson when you come back.”

Or is it the other way around? I mean, in this world.” She smacks him on the shoulder, and continues nagging him. He’s stunned.

• Her KOC doppelgänger is Myung Seung A
• After seeing Maximus, assumed LG was rich
• Has two high-end sports cars.
• Operates a café in same building as taekwondo center & Tae Eul’s home.
• Lends Lee Gon 2,007,560 SKW ($1,637.73 USD) to cover the outstanding balance on his hotel bill.
• Trusted LG because “He has even strides, great pronunciation, and is good with words. You can’t achieve that with just any education. I’m sure he’s wealthy. He’ll pay me back double the amount.”
• She told TE, “He would’ve gone back to his world. He said he was going home…He said he’s the King of his country. He left the palace empty for too long.” This is the same as what LG told TE, but Na Ri is more inclined to believe it to some extent.
• LG paid her back with a diamond.
• Owns a building, rents it out to Hero Taekwondo Academy.
• When LL visits her café, she comments that he seems to be a new customer. He tells her it is his first time there.
• Coincidentally cut her hair same length and style as Myung Seung A, startling TE.
• Na Ri tells TE that she believes if she met a doppelganger from another world, she’d have to kill her. “One of the doppelgangers always ends up dying. That’s the rule of the universe…If there’s two of something when there’s just supposed to be one, it will cause chaos in the world…The world needs balance…If there are two worlds, then one world is bound to destroy the other. We can’t be the ones destroyed.”

Updated 5/23/2020 to add Welmaris’ comment.

In ep. 12 Na Ri’s hair is again long. She must’ve been wearing the wig she mentioned to TE when we saw her with her parallel’s hairstyle.

Na Ri and Seung A seem to have their wavelengths fall into sync more than other doppelganger pairs. Some, like King Lee Ho and his doppelganger, were opposite. King Lee Ho, what we saw of him, was loving and calm; Ji Hun’s father had a quick temper and abused his wife. Na Ri and Seung A have similar economic backgrounds, and TE comments on their personalities being alike.

Na Ri appears open to belief in parallel worlds, so that would give her more sensitivity to her doppelganger. Unfortunately, Na Ri believes she and her doppelganger could not peacefully coexist if they ever met. Let’s hope she learns otherwise if given the opportunity.

• Na Ri sees JY when he’s out on the street and she drives by him. From the moment she sees him she’s nagging him, thinking he’s ES but confused by his clothes and hair. JY realizes she looks like Seung A. He gestures for her to come out of the car to him, to her chagrin. JY’s impression of Na Ri is “She’s tough.” He decides to speak to her in his own voice, not ES’s, leaning in close and asking, “I’m curious about something. Do I have a crush on you? Or is it the other way around? I mean, in this world.” She smacks him on the shoulder. “This is why you don’t have a girlfriend. Cut it out.” And she continues nagging him.
• JY’s description of Na Ri to ES: “She’s kind of pretty and… She has pretty eyes.” ES knows he’s talking about Na Ri.
• ES has a crush on Na Ri.
• Na Ri likes ES and prefers his look to Jo Yeong’s.
• Ep 12 Na Ri finds ES different. “Does he have another weird dream?” This is the first time we hear that ES has weird dreams.
• Welcomes PM Koo to her café without knowing her.
• Ep 13 ruminates with the twins on how odd ES is. Eun Bi tells her that was not ES.
• ES returns and hugs her to her confusion. She realises that this is ES.

LOL! @pkml3 Exam!! Seriously, I’d still fail. The reason I take notes is because I cannot remember LOLOL.

  3. My memory isn’t as good as it used to be. 🙁 A good memory is required in my profession but because of the constant revisions, I prefer to hire somebody who’s diligent and does her research than somebody with total recall.

I think I’ll watch a new American “Sweet Magnolias” for a change of pace. It’s on netflix.

I also saw the first episode of “Control Z.” It’s in Spanish so my ears have to get used to the language again.

Then, I think I’ll check out the kdrama “Mystic Pop Up Bar.”

  4. Growing Beautifully (GB)

Yeah @pkml3, I think I’ve been overly consumed by this show’s peculiarities and puzzles. I’ll definitely be in a different headspace soon. Am starting an 8-day retreat of sorts. Well, at least I’ll make an attempt, valiant or otherwise, to retreat for a few hours a night or day. 😇

  5. Oh dear… exam? Passed! hahaha… I checked out Mystic Pop Up Bar last night. It was the theme I was wanting to write about last year i.e. dreamcatcher. Unfortunately, there is already a webtoon using the same concept. First ep was interesting though and funny.

  6. lol. I don’t mind you. I like reading your posts because I see where you’re coming from. 🙂

  7. Was it good? I was waiting for SungJae? Sinjae? (Whatever his name) to appear.

    Hey, Happy Eid Mubarak!

  8. Where is HG Group located, KOC or ROK? I thought it was in ROK, now not sure…Thank you for your hard work, ladies! I feel like the fog is slowly lifting off my brain. If there is an exam now, I will definitely flunk it, but at least will have fun doing so!

@pkml3 This is a great place to just lay out all kinds of ideas and get ‘feedback’ on whether they pass muster. I realise that if I don’t write, then the ideas don’t flow. If they flow, I need to see where they’ll go. Then I’d like to know (like you) if they make sense in the context of whatever framework we have.

It’s nice to sometimes get a bit of a sounding board from the many readers/viewers.

The problem with this show, is that it’s given us a new world or two and magic, but has not shown enough of the logic and it’s limits, so that we can stop our wild guessing by Episode 11. I recall grumbling loudly about shows because the logic of their magic/supernatural setup changed when ever it suited the story (or the writer ran out of ideas to continue the previous logic) or was never given to viewers. They were obviously less full of clues and richness, and therefore less engaging.

The engagement factor here, actually, can be only 50% credited to the show. I feel it’s the playing with the guessing and getting the responses that’s the other 50%. That’s why I appreciate you and your blog so much!!! LOL. Catch ya again!

  10. Don’t worry. It’ll be an open-book exam. Like in law school. There’ll be a hypothetical fact situation and you’ll analyze it, cite the relevant source material and structure your argument.

    hahaha.

Just kidding. It’ll probably be a picture-matching test.

    And it’s for fun.

  11. @Packmule3, speaking of matching pictures, the picture of Captain Choe Gi Tae, Major Choe has been accidentally put under Lieutenant Commander Han Jun Yeol.

Last week I sent you some emails with photo pairings of characters that, as of that point, didn’t have enough information presented about them to write about their characters. One pair has gotten important as of ep. 11: Prince Buyeong’s oldest son and a photo LL developed in ROK.

@Snow Flower, HG Group is in ROK. However I noticed KU Group is in both worlds. (PM Koo’s ex is chairman of KU in KOC.) LG landed in his helicopter on the roof of the KU skyscraper when coming to pick up TE when she was stranded in KOC Seoul. When LG was saying goodbye to TE at the end of his first visit to ROK, a KU plaque was on the wall behind them.

I suspect LL puts his people at the top of big corporations so they can skim money for him and provide the extensive resources he needs to build and maintain his personal army. I suspect PM Koo’s ex is one of LL’s minions and got caught. He’s in jail for embezzlement, etc. PM Koo also threatened her ex with releasing her wiretap of him relating to a tunnel project that is fishy. That tunnel is the abandoned one in which we see LL meet the bookshop owner one time.

  12. Thanks, Welmaris!

I’ll fix it when I get home tonight. Out with husband. 🙂

  13. Growing Beautifully (GB)

Woah @Welmaris, sounds plausible. I do also think that the replacement people put in corps are meant to be LL’s money suppliers.

I’m not sure about PM Koo’s husband being a minion as he seemed genuinely surprised that she had asked about LL’s minions just before LL himself turned up.

That Tunnel project could have been one of his many fishy projects and LL could have used his inherent dishonesty to gain access to it. Of course it would/might have been more secure for LL if he had been made into his minion.

Koo’s ex does however have a top efficient secretarial team who digs up hidden/deleted information quickly.

  14. Good connection about the tunnel, Welmaris.

Is LL’s No Man’s Land somewhere near this tunnel, you think?

And do we have any info on this man? The white-haired man who sometimes advised PM Koo? Is he working for her ex-husband?

    Thanks, Welmaris.

  15. @Miracle23, Happy Mubarak to you!.

I checked Mystic Pop-Up Bar. The misanthropist fairy made me laugh a lot. First episode was slapstick-y but had an interesting message. The second one was way better and with a better message also: to be honest and not to spread rumors. The ending made me very sad (in a good way). My biggest grip is that can be so tonally different that you can have whiplash and cease your suspension of belief.

I don’t think it can reach the heights we got from Jang Man-Weol in Hotel Del Luna, but it has potential to be good.

  16. Thank you for your hardwork! But with Myung Na Ri, I remember her saying that she always wanted to cut her hair short during that time of the year but actually wore a wig as a simulation. Up until now her hair’s long.

  17. You’re right, @Juliette, and in ep.

  18. @Packmule3, I don’t deserve credit for the tunnel connection: another commentator helpfully translated the sign when we saw it in a past episode, then alerted us it was the same name mentioned by PM Koo.

I have not seen hide nor hair of hoary mentor in ROK.

  19. Good points, Welmaris. Thanks. It makes me kinda wonder who else is wearing or wore a wig. We have Nari and Luna.

I’ll edit the blog and re-post this. I find it hard to keep track of who said what unless I do a search of the comment box…but then, it means I’ve to go on an “Administrator” mode.

    Thanks.

  20. Regarding the character Director Hwang:
RoK – time stamp 52:03 of episode 7, Lee Lim tells his henchman, “And give this to Director Hwang of the care center. It’s this month’s electricity fees”.
Cut to time stamp 29:56 of episode 10, Dr. Hwang in KoC, in hospital reporting to Lee Gon on Eun Seop’s recovery from bullet.
Then time stamp 14:23 of episode 11, where the second doctor in command tells LG that “Dr. Hwang will return to the palace as soon as Prince Buyeong’s autopsy is done”.
Time stamp 25:16 of Episode 12, Director Hwang comes into LG’s bedroom to take care of TE.
Is this Director Hwang from RoK?

  21. Cool! We’ll have Welmaris check on this when she has time. Thanks!!

  22. Regarding the “tunnel” that LL uses.
Time stamp 23:12 episode 9 Prime Minister visits ex-husband in prison, and she says she still has wiretapping files on him, and she says, “Guyeon tunnel project being the fishiest” of the files
Time stamp 31:31 episode 10, and LL is in KoC, walking in that tunnel. Could this be the Guyeon tunnel? The ex-husband is in cahoots with LL?

  23. Growing Beautifully (GB)

Hi @pkml3, please check email. I sent you a combination of the character info from @Welmaris and myself.

  24. Got them! Thanks. I’ll upload them today. 🙂

  25. @Packmule and @GB, I’ve finished going through ep. 8 for additions to the character info. It’s 3am here now, and I’m going to sleep. When I wake tomorrow (later today) I’ll email my amended notes to you both.

I’ve lost track of which episodes are still not analyzed for character info. Let me know what I should pick up next.

  26. Growing Beautifully (GB)

Hi @Welmaris, I have done Ep 10 and 11. I was trying to do Episode 12, but I knew I’d run out of time. We are going into the last 4 episodes and I didn’t want to hold back the character info any longer. So I did it sort of halfway and sent the lot to @packmule3. I guess you can do Ep 13 on/after Friday. Thanks so much!! 😘

  27. @Fan of TKEM
Time stamp 31:31 episode 10, and LL is in KoC, walking in that tunnel. Could this be the Guyeon tunnel? The ex-husband is in cahoots with LL?

    Yes, I believe so.

  28. Wow! this is like a TKEM encyclooedia. Solid effort @Welmaris!
