Hi Agdr03 – Scarlet HEart Ryeo is a historical drama (probably a mix of real and fictional). But I really loved Lee Joong Gi’s acting. IU has done a great job too. It is a tragedy, but lot of people watched till the last but one episode. It shows the depiction of how power struggles can bring out the worst in a person and the consequences to that. IT definitely does not fall into a easy watch, but I enjoyed it.
@angelwingssf, yes I heard a lot of good things about Scarlet except for the ending. I heard there was an alternative ending but it wasn’t the one that was shown.
I tried to watch Lawless Lawyer before but only got to episode 1 because I wanted to watch LJG and Seo Ye Ji. 😊 I got caught up with other dramas.
@agdr03 Personaly, I didn’t like Scarlet and I don’t think you’re really missing a drama :p It was an adaptation and they cut the number of episodes from 35 to 20. You could see it in the story. The casting of the brothers was not really good, LJG and KHN were great but the rest of casting didn’t bring anything. But the OST was nice.
agdr03 – I haven’t watched lawless lawyer either. Neither did I watch flower of evil. For some reason, I did not have enough time during lawless lawyer to watch it. Later, I just did not feel like it. I heard it was good. Lee Joongki is really a good actor. Like you can say YYS from HP is really a talented actor. I loved YYS in Warm and Cozy. I can watch warm and cozy every day and won’t be bored. Just like that I can watch Scarlet heart and won’t be bored. I do hate some of the atrocities that has been portrayed on the show, but that is what everyone watches these for.
Try the first 2 episodes and see how you like it.

It looks like @nrllee is right that the scene where KHS fronted the actor at the beginning and even slapped him is a foreseen future for HJ and JA. But without the slapping because their not those kind of people.
HJ is getting so busy he’s slowly forgetting the things that he said to JA like calling her when it’s raining. 🙁
Hopefully there won’t be too much angst about it and will be resolved quickly.
I’m not sure about the trope but there’s only the scandal of HJ with Charlie Jung and the dating in private. JA was about to tell her YouTube viewers who her boyfriend was but HJ stopped her.

I maybe in the minority, but I am kind of watching the series for Min-Jae and Kyung-Mi.
Min-Jae (SDM) – Loved that she believed and supported SHJ from nothing. The scene where she was fangirling over Song Min-Su (PSJ). I laughed pretty hard when she brought out the book she was hiding behind her back. I loved her in Hi Bye, Mama! too.
Kyung-Mi (PSY) – I’m amused by her exuberance and fast paced, mousy voice. I also love that she says whatever is on her mind.

Sorry, not John – is Kyung Mi – Hae Hyo’s mother? She is the only one with the mousy voice. She is exactly like the tiger mom. I like her and hate her at the same time. She was cool as a cucumber when she hear the phone call about her son’s friend dating her daughter.
Out of topic – I always wonder if the children raised by tiger mom’s would rebel against their parent after they grow up or are submissive till the end of their life and the next circle of abuse starts when they have their own children. (Just my opinion).
I also like MinJae – Even though she did not want to do it, something internal was forcing her to do it. She is such a sweetheart and supports HJ even when he had nothing. She booked the Modeling session in Paris with her money and just had so much faith in HJ. Hate who she worked for Taesu – who is a snake trying to snatch HJ just because he became famous.
Will they break up HJ and JA? They both have been portrayed to be perfect mates in this drama and truly there is no such thing as perfection ever in life. Right? IS JA crossing the line and getting together with HH ? Don’t know. The last scene in the 14th episode was hinting something along those lines. I hope not. I don’t like the fact that she is spending so much time with HH and acting as if there is nothing (may be from her side), but she is not clueless that HH is wanting more than just friendship from her.
@angelwingssf, although HyeJun and JungHa are growing apart, as can be seen by the literal line between them (approx 42 mins, when they were at JungHa’s house) (think: the line theory from HP!), I doubt that JungHa and HaeHyo will get together in the end – refer to the last shot of both JungHa and HaeHyo – there’s still a literal line between them. The Dutch tilt and the thunder sound right then increases the tension of the scene, but I’m not sure if that implies that JungHa is wavering towards HaeHyo.
Is HJ like real life Korean celebrities? HJ seems to be too busy to call, see or text JA. He did seem to make an effort at the start but then to many other issue keeps popping up. Korean celebrities always date and reason to split is “due to busy schedule”. Seriously if you like/love someone wouldn’t you want to see them more? You do have 5mins to call/text? No?
@penjuin_07 I think they are showing the reality of celebrities and their crushing crazy schedule. Still, like HH says, HJ has changed. I am sure the fame and especially the busyness has changed him in some way or another. His heart may not but he does not have time probably to even think.
I have this unsettling feeling about HJ-JA’s r/s that they are not communicating enough. JA did say in the beginning that she will reveal things to him little by little…and I think by now she is ready to open up more but HJ feels like he is sweeping things under the carpet when he says “I love you” to her. Shouldn’t they deal with the issue and talk it over?
@grace yup I definitely agree HJ and JA is not communicating enough, I hate that every issue that pops up HJ doesn’t share it with JA she may not fully understand but she’s there for him. He refused to let people/media know that JA is his GF didn’t even talked to her about it but he not realising that she was going to confess on her channel, which means she was ready to face on whatever things that would be thrown at her.

HJ is now brushing things aside and not dealing with all the issues. He knew JH wasn’t comfortable after his telephone call with his female co-star, and he didn’t do much save to ask to take a picture with her. I guess he’s busy, and he’s had a lot to deal with, but come on, please have a heart to heart talk with JH?
I can’t really recall the tropes because I’ve been frustrated with the noble idiocy (and decided to watch DDSSLLS instead which was so light-hearted and a welcome change heh). But from what I remember there was a hospital visit (HJ’s dad had to see a doc for his shoulder), dating in private, bike date (Jin-u and Haena), scandal (the Charlie Jung one), and crazy fans (those made the scandal worse, by uploading photos and saying HJ was hanging out with Jin-u). No fried chicken in sight still, and I don’t think it’s going to appear here!

I quite enjoyed Ep 14 because of the growth in the characters, even HJ’s brother has improved, and you can tell that HH’s mum is actually really lonely. But I’m still frustrated at how the main couple aren’t really fighting for their relationship. JH at times seems non-committal and they are still not talking things out, and her sheepish laugh is starting to be annoying. 🙁

Finally after watching the end, I was left with a boredom I cannot explain. Had no feelings what so ever. None of the stories had any closure. What happened to HH ? Was he successful? What happened to his sister and JinU ? It felt that JA and HJ meet for the first time and someone who was his GF did not check his release from military service. Even fans like us check those out. Irrespective of how busy we are. Anyway, why wear the shoes he bought for her when they were a couple? if she was not going to be in a relationship with him, why not return it.
I had more questions than answers after seeing the last episode.
As Agrd03 and JT7 said, no lovey dovey moments at all. They were talking like two batchmates (28 y.o). Initially, I loved how JA could figure out HJ and viceversa. but not any more. I could not even figure out why she broke up. What was JA’s mother doing in her daughter’s house. Did she break up with HJ just to not be her mother’s daughter? (called Greedy?)
HH mom ‘s clothes were beautiful. She has a great figure and everything looks good on her.
Many of you dropped it mid way and moved on to greener pastures. Will join you ladies and guys in other dramas.
Record of Youth – so, it was a record of their youth. Do I think I would see it again, maybe not. Everybody goes through difficulties growing up in their youth, and without a light at the end of the tunnel, we have plenty of experience in real life.

I agree with angelwingssf’s assessment of this show. What the heck was that all about? Not enough happened in this drama to say it had a plot. And it had the dullest time jump I’ve seen in k-dramas so far–they’re all back to pretty much where they were at the beginning. Two years doesn’t seem to have changed them at all (except that the military apparently builds abs).
I could say I wish I hadn’t wasted 16 hours of my life watching this drama, but I can’t really say that since I began skipping through most any scene where the OTP were together, after the first few episodes, because I found their relationship so unrealistic and unenergetic. I can’t believe that 20-somethings would be this passive about their relationships. The couple storylines basically ended with: “Let’s break up” and “OK.” Hye-jun showed no strong emotion throughout the show except when he went to his room to cry.
I can’t believe the writer would take the time to build this world—and all these characters–and then not have people do much within it (e.g., why have the brother and manager interact so much unless something was going to happen?). I stuck around for the manager, the grandpa, and the family dinners—and I loved seeing what Hye-Jun’s mom cooked.
I’m probably in the minority here but I think part of the problem (besides the writing) is that Park Bo-gum doesn’t have a lot of range when it comes to portraying a lover/boyfriend. I found this also in Encounter. He can do squeaky-clean cute (like in the Havana scenes in that one), but I wasn’t convinced he was in love with the CEO. There’s just a nuance you want to see when a man looks at a woman on-screen that I didn’t see with him there or in ROY.
I’m with you, BethB. PBG’s acting just isn’t my cup of tea. I tried. I can’t see him as lover material. He looks delicate and effete. Effeminate, to be brutally honest. Now, some viewers might like that, but it doesn’t work for me. Those early scenes, e.g., when he was being punched by that mean actor, when he was yelling at his cheating manager, or when he was walking down the runway, those scenes were jarring to my eyes.
I said this before. He isn’t believable as a tough guy. He looks wimpy.
That’s why I avoided “Encounter.” It’s bad enough that it’s a “Noona romance.” But PBG isn’t convincing as a lover of a 30-something-year-old woman of the world, unless she has an arrested development.
Just compare his acting to that of the male lead in Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol, and you’ll see the difference right away. And that actor is much younger than PBG.
Anyway, I hope PBG’s military days will toughen him up, and he’ll acquire the manly/sexual vibes.
Ah this was really more a Record of Bo Gum more than anything! So much so that the writer seemed to have focused all the attention on HJ and neglected JH’s story arc. It’s as if they just stuck her into the plot because HJ needed a love interest, and gave her a painful past & parasitic mother to spice things a little. Then once the kissing scene and dancing in the rain was done, she was left out of the plot, save to turn up once in awhile to make a few scripted witty remarks. I wanted to see growth, to see her learn to fight for the relationship but it never happened. We weren’t even shown the context of the bedroom scene that everyone was previously discussing.
I loved the bits you mentioned @BethB. Those flatlay shots of the meals made the food look so good. I also enjoyed seeing the growth of the characters in the Sa family, as well as the friendship between the 3 guys. And the conversations between the mothers. I ended up liking Ji-ah and HJ’s brother in the end. The latter can probably win an award for being the best eye-roller ever! 😆
Err…this is what PBG will be doing for his military service. So I am not sure military service will do much to “man him up”? But I have similar reservations about him as an actor.

There’s a Korean zombie series with the same name, “Kingdom.” I’m not watching this one till the FINAL episode of the FINAL season is released on Netflix. I don’t like to be left hanging. 🙂
@packmule3 – Thank you. I did watch Kingdom – but it was not my cup of tea. IT was about the growth of a child who was a slave and grew up and becomes a warrior protecting and fighting with the king.
