Throwback Thursday: HP The Bass and the Drums

For @Growing_Beautifully.

Meeting of the minds…

I’m reposting @nrllee’s explanation of the relationship among the band players, specifically the conjoined roles of the bass guitar and drums, or Songhwa and JW.

All I can add to nrllee’s post is this —

Back in Episode 4 at 1:10:51, during the early stages of the band, only Songhwa and JW were hard at work learning their instruments. Since, the other three already knew how to play the instruments, they would often go off to cook and eat ramen noodles, leaving the two to practice on their own.

At one point, we see SH observing the two of them. He smiled. When I saw it, I thought he was giving his approval to his two best friends, and smiling at the vision of their future together.

And that’s why this brief shot worked as they were walking to the restaurant in Episode 7 worked.ย  SH was trailing after them. You see, if ever there was somebody in the gang who could bridge the gap between Songhwa and JW, it would be SH. ๐Ÿ™‚

And now, here’s nrllee’s great post. Thanks, nrllee!!!!

The bass players and drummers are well known in the musical circle (and really only if you play in a band) to be tight. They have to be. They share a bond thatโ€™s unique from the rest of the instruments. They are an inseparable pair sonically speakingโ€ฆthey are the rhythm section of the band. They have to be in synch, constantly watching each other and timing it perfectly. Thatโ€™s their role in the band. The other instruments weave in and out. If you talk in music circles, for a band to sound really good, the bassist and drummer have to be tight. Itโ€™s a bond that takes time to forge. Good drummers and bassists know each other so well that they instinctively know what the other will do.

They are a unit.

The Keyboardist is versatile because they have the full range of notes at their disposal โ€“ your keyboardist fills in the blanks. They can team up with the lead guitar at times or add frills to even out the tone of the song or rock with the rhythm guitar. Rhythm guitar plays chords which provides the harmonics for vocalist to sing to. Lead guitar plays melodies and adds texture to the song.

The Lead guitar is often the showiest personality in the band. Heโ€™s the one everyone remembers because his parts stand out. . Everyone is part of a team of course to achieve an overall groove and sound that suits the mood of the song but in any band the bassist and drummers share an inseparable bond thatโ€™s unique to them alone.

Reposting the Q&A for Shin PD regarding the band parts. The band parts were already set in stone for each character BEFORE the cast were selected. They had to play/learn to play their assigned instruments.

TMI #3. Is the actorsโ€™ musical instruments selection fateful? Whatโ€™s the decision making process for the actorsโ€™ musical instrument position?

Shin PD: โ€œThe musical instrument position was already determined for the characters, and it was a situation where we needed to match the casting. Fortunately JoJungSuk knows how to play the guitar and YooYeonSeok & KimDaeMyung have learned to play the drum and piano. JungKyungHo learned guitar for his previous work and all of them had a little basics except for JeonMiDoโ€

Thanks @pkml3 and @nrllee for bringing to the fore the significance of the band instruments and who played which. There was so much calculation and deliberate choice in everything, and all so deliberately unspoken LOL. The more silent the spoken word, the louder the clue!

  2. I’ve played in a band before, and you’re right about the complicity between bassist and drummer. However, they are also instruments that have a lot of wave-out possibilities. It really depends on the style of music played. Here, on pop-songs, much less. It’s basic and repetitive accompaniment. On a record version it’s very static. But on the live version, there is sometimes improvisation. During a riff, it’s possible to add variations. With a singer in the foreground, however, it is difficult (it interferes with the singing and confuses the singer who needs a stable base).

In the song in episode 2, you can hear one of these variations on the bass, but you can’t see the fingers at this point. (this is towards the end of the scene).
The drummer is convincing in this scene, at least we can see that he is right on the beat. For the bass player, it’s harder to say. At first sight, he seems to add notes sometimes, but it is perhaps illusory. Indeed, the sound is so heavy that it is difficult to hear.
1:16:10 – On the first part of the piece you can see that, because there is one note per bar almost. Why does he move his fingers so much?
1:16:32 – On the other hand, here we see that his fingers are perfectly on the rhythm, even for the secondary notes. You can also see the typical bass hand swing to keep the rhythm or stop notes. It make me think the actor know to play bass.
Note: I didn’t do the harmonic reading to check if the notes they play are the right ones, but it looks like it. At least, whenever there is a chord change, you can see that he is playing a different note.
There is also a crucial detail that makes me think that the actor knows how to play the bass: in his right hand, he has his thumb on the microphone. This is a way to ensure the stability of the hand, a reference point allowing to play without having to look and pluck the right strings in fingerstyle. This is not a reflex that a random person would have when asked to pretend to play.

Overall, there’s nothing to complain about with this scene, it’s faithful. Aside from the weirdness at the beginning for the bass, if someone told me they really played the song to shoot the scene, I can believe it.

The only complaint is of course the awful contracted image, which kills the readability.

For fun, an example of rare musical complicity between drummer and bassist, especially since it’s on an improvised part:

@WE Thanks for the link. They certainly enjoyed themselves!

I read that the actors either already knew or had to learn to play the instruments for this show, and so they actually did play the music and were not too bad.

  4. Yes GB, you are right. All the actors have to learn to play the instruments, except JJS because he already knew how to play guitar. For our bassist, she has to learn from scratch since she has no basic. But she did really really well. This were when they played live concert post S1 HP. My favorite songs from Midowa Parasol are the fast tracks i.e. Canon, Crying Nut’s Deep in The Night, and A Chance Encounter. Enjoys!

Thanks @Miracle23 for that link. I watched it once before and now again and was laughing so much at the way they re-did Aloha. Mi Do can sing so well but she purposely sang off key … oh dear!!! They hammed it up so well.

  6. @GB I watched it for 5 times already lol ๐Ÿคฃ
My fave is when MiDo sing! Her angelic voice ๐Ÿ’• and how the boys turn on the flashlight to support her ๐Ÿค—

  7. Yeah, rhythm n groove – drummer n bassist link… I remember skipping several scenes when I was watching HP, constantly anticipating JWon n SongHwa story to evolve but nothing- From the very beginning, my “feels” says they shd be perfect match lol. Then there was also Jwan n IK’s sister relationship hanging… so glad that there’s season 2. Is there a lurkers’ corner in HP Rewatch sessions? Are future HP2 posts secured for FGers only? I’m not sure abt flowers but I do have green fingers.

  8. This is one of my favorite easter the bass and the drums connections

  9. Dear @Packmule3, @GrowingBeautifully and dear friends: I am with you in this rewatch. Would someone be kind enough to send me the password or how do I get it?.

As a sidenote, Song Hwa’s horrid voice, apart of being a running joke, is a symbol of coziness. Her friends love her so much that lets it slip, but for Andrea it is a symbol that that part of her that is her blindspot is an integral part of who she is. He embraces it, while recognizing it for what it is (I saw Episode 1 again on Thursday, and Andrea crossing himself after telling the white lie that she had a great voice made me chuckle – IJ took the sarcastic route with his “she has a unique voice”). Another chuckle from Andrea in that first session sealed the deal for me.

By the way, @WEnchanteur, those bass player and drummer are monsters in a good way!!! =D . I am an amateur flute player, and had the pleasure to play some “Onda Nueva” with a great Cuatro player (our Venezuelan Cuatro is kind of a baritone ukulele wit a returning intonation in the fourth string – such an instrument not only plays chords and rhythms like nobody’s business but also has a percussive nature). For me keeping up with the rhythm is still very hard, and when it is achieved is due to my friend’s experience.

Hope to read more from you all soon!!!

Hi there @FGB4877! It’s nice to know that you’re watching HP too. It will be @Miracle23 and @nrllee who are able to release the password. I believe you need to email them at bodflowergarden@gmail.com and they have to decide.

Of course, I vouch for you LOL.

I like your point that the guys liked or loved Songhwa enough to accept her terrible singing. There is a point though, about her ‘blind spot’… it seems that she was aware that she couldn’t carry a tune (she faked a sore throat before a competition) but dived in anyway to join the band. That’s one determined person, unafraid of being humiliated, or she trusts those friends so much, she doesn’t care when she does humiliate herself.

Anyway, please email the bodflowergarden and I hope to see you next rewatch!

  11. This girl has a lot of nerve! The way she is imposing herself in this group!
    But it makes me think…
Why does she want to be a part of it so badly?
    Or more exactly…
Is there someone in this group she wants to keep around?
You know what I mean? ^^

  12. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE yes, @pkml3 also brought this up. We asked the question about why she insisted on being the lead singer when she couldn’t carry a tune… and being a pretty aware person, she knew this about herself. When she first met the guys, she couldn’t play any instrument, so she could only offer her voice. When they accepted her, I’m guessing they had no clue she would sound ‘like that’ LOL. But because she was already in, they couldn’t kick her out.

Our conjecture was the same, as you have said, she wanted to have the opportunities to be physically near someone in that gang.

    I’m impressed by her nerve.
    1) Female all alone… not even bringing a girlfriend for support.
    2) Enters a group of all men, and is able to handle the situations with them.
    3) When she needs to, she will reject without hesitation and with an unambiguous ‘No’. I notice this not only with SH’s rejection but how she rejected her boss, the Director, at work over doing a surgery. For this reason, I believe JW really believes that her ‘No’ means ‘No’.

However, @pkml3 suggests that JW should not accept her ‘No’ as final (and I say, true… especially in matters of the heart) and anyway, we strongly believe that JW never even confessed to Shwa so she had no chance to reject him. She might have accepted him on the spot.

My opinion is that she’s a go-getter and independent, able to stand up to men (she had to battle 3 older brothers. That must have helped!!) and not afraid to say ‘No’. Therefore her hesitation in approaching JW is because he had convinced himself and everyone that he wanted to become a priest.

We see that she does not pine away or get disheartened. She does have other relationships and a boyfriend. When bf is a loser, she’s fine about getting on without one. Later on, we’ll see it’s the same in other areas. She is able to make a decision and walk towards what she wants/needs or walk away without regret.

  13. Dear @GB, done and sent you a copy. I inclluded my ID from 11 years ago for confirmation purposes ๐Ÿ˜‰ . Thanks and hope to read you (REAL) soon!!! =D

  14. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    @FGB4877
I saw and replied! Oh dear, is it safe for you to be sending out your ID like that? We really didn’t need to. We just had to comment once or twice on the Throwback Thursday posts and that’s it!!

I hope our happy group here can continue online with you regardless.

  15. Dear @GB, as long as you don’t publish it then it is OK =D .

  16. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Heh @FGB, you’ve placed in my hands (our hands actually since there are more than just me) the means for blackmail and extortion LOL. We can make our own drama about this.

  17. I am Venezuelan so believe me, there is no money here XD

  18. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Dear @FGB4877 I saw your private message, you only need to mention it here.

Dear @pkml3, @Miracle and @nrllee, please delete @FGB’s personal information that was accidentally sent. Thanks!

  19. @GB, wiped out completed. ๐Ÿคญ๐Ÿคญ๐Ÿคญ

    Dear all,

Your BoD un is sufficient when you emailed us. We might ask some questions for verification ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Example: What you actually commented on last year ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ… kidding..

Need to make sure no wolves are using our member’s id to get through ๐Ÿค“ They are desperate, that is for sure. Poor things, they need us to stay relevant. ๐Ÿ˜

  20. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks @Miracle23. @FGB4877 you should be safe from identity theft at least from this end!!!

  21. Thanks a lot dear Ladies ๐Ÿ˜‰ for forgiving my security slip. We will see each other in Hospital Playlist comment section =D .

  22. Hello, everyone! I just want to say I never gave the instruments they play much thought, but the bass and drums are indeed in sync with each other in a band. I donโ€™t know if season 2 will hint at the relationship between Songhwa and JW; I think it will be in season 3. I canโ€™t wait to see what they have in store for us.

  23. @whykay91 Yes. Locked in. ๐Ÿ˜‚ As for S3, I know there was a lot of talk about it initially but it hasnโ€™t been easy for production and cast during the hiatus. Shin had to keep the momentum and hype going with his BTS (and heโ€™s mentioned that his family have complained that they donโ€™t see him much even though S1 ended, heโ€™s been working non stop for a long time now) and then there was the kerfuffle with COVID which caused delays. I guess we will see if they will stick to the plan of 3 or drop it down to 2. A lot of the main cast have taken on new projects post S2 so I am not sure if this is an indication that they decided to end HP with S2. If so, then FG will sail this season and not next.
