Yumi’s Cells: Yumi’s Guys & Yumi’s Umbrellas

This is a work in progress. But you know me, I like making lists.

Note: as bitches, we should know that there’s also a running joke about the umbrellas.

1. Her ex-boyfriend

Played by Lee SangYi. (I’m crossing my finger that he’ll get to be a lead one day.)

He ran away with her small pink umbrella,

and left her to stand in the rain.

She’s grateful that he broke up with her. She dodged the bullet there.

2. Her office crush

Played by Shinee’s Minho!

Was there an umbrella scene? I can’t remember. But then, he wasn’t a boyfriend, was he?

Yumi’s grateful to him for reviving her love life.

3. Her first boyfriend or her “starter pack” boyfriend

Played by Ahn BoHyun.

#kdramaedit from a love bot, basically.#kdramaedit from a love bot, basically.#kdramaedit from a love bot, basically.#kdramaedit from a love bot, basically.#kdramaedit from a love bot, basically.

We can’t forget this umbrella scene right? With his big blue umbrella, he came out of nowhere to shelter her from the rain. He was concerned that she was standing under the rain. lol. Needless to say, it’s a metaphor of love.

But he also assessed whether he should use the umbrella or not.

Yumi’s grateful to him for being such an easy-going and supportive boyfriend.  He was a sweetheart. Too bad he has a toxic female friend and co-worker, though.

4. Her second boyfriend: Yoo BaBi (or is it Bobby?)

Played by GOT8’s Park JinYoung.

This was a good joke. He appeared as a Non-Player Character (NPC) because while Yumi was still in love with Woogi, he couldn’t be a “player” in the game of love.

The think with this guy is he breaks down her defenses by asking questions.

“Which way is the exit?”

“Excuse me, are you Kim Yuna?”

“Uhm. Did you lose an umbrella?”

And here, “How’s my outfit today?”

He realized that by starting the conversation with a question, he doesn’t look like he’s pursuing her, and she isn’t threatened. She was shocked when he paid her a compliment about her hair out of the blue, so he had to restart their conversation.

Bobby: How’s my outfit today?
Yumi: Your outfit?
Bobby: Yes. It’s new.
Yumi: I think it looks good on you.
Bobby: Thank you. Your hair is pretty today, too.

There! He did what he wanted to do: pay her a compliment. He just did it in a roundabout way so it would look casual this time.

Then so he wouldn’t sound “pushy” and to leave her hanging, (and confused) he said goodbye first.

Tsk tsk tsk. He’s a player.

He found her lost “fried egg” umbrella. Apparently, his girlfriend wondered whose umbrella it was. Instead of directly handing it to her, he just dropped it off at the office front desk. lol. That’s a sign that this relationship isn’t going to last.

Right now, we don’t know yet what she has to be thankful for…apart from the umbrella.

5. Her third boyfriend and last husband: ???

Played by Actor X

He should be a man who can best all the previous ones, and his umbrella should have something special about it.

  1. Perhaps Min-ho has a twin brother? 😉 One can dream, right?

  2. I wouldn’t Minho’s twin brother. But PLLLLEEEASE, I pray to the kdrama gods that it isn’t Kim SeonHo. (hahaha) Anybody but him.

But I think I know Yumi’s type. They aren’t guys with pudgy round faces. She likes guys with lean, angular faces.

It would be funny if they were to cast either Gong Yoo or Lee MinHo as a “tribute” to Goblin, and TKEM, respectively.

Edited to add this: But I’m crossing my fingers that they cast a relatively new actor.

  3. Gosh, yes to Gong Yoo or Min Ho, but I think we would know by now if that would happen. We can’t have the 2nd MLs either – Kim Do Hwan is in the military and Lee Dong Wook seems very busy. No no no to KSH. I wouldn’t mind Lee Jae Wook?

  4. Wow! I would love Lee JaeWook too (although he is a lot younger than Kim GoEun). But do you see what I mean about Yumi’s type? She’ll probably go for a tall guy, too.

And no. Gong Yoo and Lee MinHo would say no to projects like this.

  5. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    Thanks @pkml3

Yes, the umbrella motif is strong in this show. Let’s see if guy 3 does any umbrella stunts.

I’d like to know what guy 3’s cells are up to.
    (⊙△⊙✿)

  6. I think LJW could succeed in playing an older man because he has a very mature, structured face. He’s being cast in another show right now as well, so he’s probably too busy. A newcomer would be welcome. There were a couple of medical students-interns in HP2 who might do. I want to see Lee Soo-Hyuk again, too. But it’s all speculation, right?

  7. Same here, @GB.

If Guy3 is the “IT” guy, I want to know what’s so special about him. Looks and body won’t be good enough. I want the cells too.

  8. My Friday cell is celebrating!!! Happy FriYAY!! Thanks @PM3 for the post and the umbrella cues for Yumi’s bf. We will be watching for it eagerly.

I enjoyed Babi (it’s Bobby in Dramacool) and his female doppelgänger. Seeing the gifs side by side makes me appreciate it even more. Babi also keeps mentioning his GF to make him seem “non-threatening” that’s why he can be confusing to Yumi’s cells. But I think he is a player too. He sounded a bit pushy with his questions.

  9. Oh you’re right! There was that HP2 intern that we both spotted, right, @Fern? The one who was working in pediatrics.

Lee SooHyuk would be fine too — although I’m not sure about his acting. He’s good at looking stoic (like in that Doom at Your Service) and he has a great voice, but I don’t know if his acting skills are even up to par. Lee SangYi, Ahn BoYoung and Park JinYoung can.

  10. Especially the first question about the exit. I mean… he must have walked over to where Yumi was sitting to ask her that question. Normally, if you’re lost, you just stop on track and ask whoever’s nearest you.

But his re-phrasing his compliment was the warning bell. He really wanted to tell her that she looked pretty.

Smooth. He’s unlike Woong who was tongue-tied on their first date.

  11. I agree he was smooth there on the counter-question. He noticed her hair was different which means he has been observing her for a bit. Hmmm…

I hope they will show a glimpse of BF #3 in this season. That will be a good anticipation for season 2. I’m already onboard for season 2 regardless of who is the guy. LGE is a pleasure to watch on this show with cells as cherry on top! And the show is mostly focused on her. So there’s a big likelihood the guy will be a newbie or not as big names as Gong Yoo or LMH. Woo Do Hwan should be back from military by then, right? Good re-launch vehicle for him.

  12. I second that notion “I want the cells too.”

  13. @Janey, you are right. I just read that Kim Do Hwan will be out by 5 January 2022. And it may be sooner as many are being released at their last leave due to Covid. PBG will also be out in the late winter/early Spring. Time really flies.

  14. May I suggest someone too? I would love LMH, and Woo Do Hwan, but I think that Kwak Dong Yeon could nail it as well.

I am currently watching “Love in the Moonlight” and I am impressed by him.
I won’t say about Park Bo Gum because he is in the military as well.

  15. Yes to Kim Do Hwan but Park Bo Gum?

I like the kid, but no. Unless he toughened up in the army, he doesn’t strike me as manly enough. He’ll freeze her Naughty cells.

And I’m afraid Kim GoEun and her brain cells would beat him and his manly cells to a pulp.

  16. Who’s Kwak Dong Yeon??

  17. @Packmule3,

In “Love in the Moonlight” he played The Crown Prince’s bodyguard.

    Here: https://mydramalist.com/people/5101-kwak-dong-yeon

I know that he played in Vincenzo but I haven’t watched that one yet.

  18. Ah! Thanks @Cleopatra.

He’s the guy in “Psycho But It’s Okay.” The son of the politician. He danced naked on stage, embarrassed his family and wrecked his father’s political campaign. lol.

  19. @Packmule3,

I agree with you. No to PBG for possible boyfriend 3.
In the manga bf #3 is 3 years younger than Yumi. So, I would Woo Do Hwan or Kwak Dong Yeon or Lee Jae Wook.

  20. @Packmule3,

    Yes that one! LOL!
I prefer him in the sageuk. He is more manly and lethal!

  21. I like your choices.

Woo DoHwan from “The King: Eternal Monarch”
    Kwak Dong Yeon from “Moonlight…”
Lee Jae Wook from “Extraordinary You.”

There should be more contenders. Kdrama’s second male leads who deserve to be a starring role.

BTW, I’m saying no to Rowoon and that pretty boy, Cha Eunwoo…although it would be fun to see how they measure up to Shinee and GOT9 idols-turned-actors members.

  22. @Cleopatra, I was going to add Kwak Dong Yeon. It would be great to see him play sane, sensible and not corrupt. Wasn’t he striking in “Love in the Moonlight?” He was so good in Vincenzo, too – a totally different character, but he stole the limelight from certain other actors there, imo. He’s not much older than Lee Jae Wook. I think both can play older types though.

  23. @Packmule3,

I agree with you! They all deserve a leading role!
As for Rowon and Chae Eun Woo, I think that you are right about this specific role. I have seen clips from Eun Woon’s Rookie Historian and he was good there. I prefer Chae Eun Woo to Rowon that I haven’t seen before. Still, I will go with SHINEE. Choi Min Ho is Min Hot.. LMAO!

    @Fern,

For some unknown reason, after watching “Faith:The Great Doctor” this past August, I am into Sageuk. I mean I am enjoying “Love in the Moonlight” so very much. You all know that I am currently watching “Lovers of the Red Sky” LMAO.
I haven’t watched Lee Jae Wook but I have seen him around. Wasn’t he in Do Do Do Sol La Sol as well?

  24. Blimey, @Cleoopatra, KDY was only about 19 in “Love in the Moonlight!” I guess Lee Jae Wook was about that age in “Memories of the Alhambra.”

@packmule3, yes the pediatrician intern was rather more-ish. I also like the neurosurgery intern who encouraged the motorcycle accident girl.

  25. @Fern,

Oh my. I haven’t watched “Memories of the Alhambra”!
I didn’t know LJW was there as well! I am into JOMO these days…*smiles*

  26. I didn’t watch Memories…either, but I saw LJW in ‘Search: www’, in ‘When the Weather is Fine’ and in DDSSLLS.

  27. @Fern,

I haven’t watched any of those, but you made me think of someone else as well..Seo Kang-joon 😀

  28. I’ve only seen Seo Kang Joon in ‘When the Weather is Fine’, but his character seemed a bit inconsistent. I should watch him in something else.

  29. Seo Kang Joon can be a good one! He was SML in Cheese in the Trap and he acted well with KGE. If that happens, This he can get the girl. 😉

LJW is also a favorite of mine!

  30. @Janey and @Cleopatra, I’ve been watching clips of his on YouTube. He is a very convincing kisser.

  31. Looking closely at Yui’s wedding photo, whomever she married is not much taller than her. And it’s not because they stood her on a box: whoever plays the groom, his hands aren’t much bigger than hers. In contrast, one thing I’ve noticed when Yumi is with Woong his hands overwhelm her. When he puts his hands alongside her face her head is practically covered. He’s a tall man, and it shows even in his hands.

One of my favorite male Korean actors on the shorter side is Doh Kyung Soo (D.O., from Exo). He was discharged from military service in January 2021. I appreciated his acting skills in 100 Days My Prince and the film Swing Kids. He showed in 100DMP he’s got comedy chops, but he also exudes gravitas. He’d have no trouble convincing me he’s the one for her. DO is 28 years old to KGE’s 30; he’s 173 to her 168 cm. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

@Packmule3, since you brought up the scene where Bobby asks Yumi if she likes his new outfit, I thought I’d share some research I’ve done on the stick figure sweater/jumper he’s wearing (making the previously seen paper doll come to life). First, a little background: Because I loved a particular coat worn frequently by the male lead in a Cdrama, I Googled “designer who uses red white blue ribbon.” I found that using red, white, and blue grosgrain ribbon as trim is a signature of Thom Browne, a designer based in New York. Actors I’ve seen wearing clothing with this trim include Jung Yong Hwa in Sell Your Haunted House, Niu Jun Feng in GO into Your Heart, and Kim Min Jae in Episode 8 of Dali and the Cocky Prince. Another signature of Thom Browne is using four white stripes, especially on left sleeves. Over the 2-3 years I’ve watched Asian dramas, I’ve seen men wearing clothing with those arm stripes, and I took notice because it reminds me of the arm bands worn by male family members at South Korean funerals. (Thom Browne uses 4 white stripes; the lead male family member at a funeral wears 3 stripes, other male family members wear two stripes.) The sweater Bobby wears with the stick figure has four white stripes on the left sleeve. I looked it up on the Thom Browne 2021 Fall Collection website. It costs $980 USD.

  32. Thanks @welmaris on the clothing info! Isn’t it fun that they got the right sweater for Bobby with the stick figure? Another admirable aspect of Kdrama and cdrama is the attention to detail on clothing and costumes. And they can be very expensive!

  33. 🙂 Welmaris!

You and I both noticed Woong’s large hands. When he wiped a speck of dust (? I can’t remember now) off her mouth, his hand reminded me of a baseball mitt and her face a baseball. I happened to like guys with large hands….

I wouldn’t mind D.O. Even though he’s on the short side, he has enough stage presence to make him look like a 6-footer. He won’t be overpowered by Kim GoEun, either.

And thanks for doing the research on the sweater. Thom Browne, you said? JinYoung’s dresser/coordinator was on point. Considering he was formerly an NPC (non-player character), the stick figure on the sweater was very witty.

Bobby’s dapper style is certainly polar opposite of Woong’s hobo style. 🙂

But yes, the four-band design on the arm of Bobby’s sweater caught my eye, too. It reminded me of the funeral armbands in kdramas, and armbands in general remind me of Hitler’s nazi party armbands.

  34. What about the police in “The King: Eternal Monarch”? Wi Ha Joon.

    He appeared on my tumblr.

I don’t know if you can see these. But if you do, make sure you pick up your jaw from the floor. hahaha.

  35. @PM3 He was the police officer in Squid Games. I did not see TKEM in his list of dramas. But we did notice him in Squid Games, with the shirt on (and mask and overalls!) 😉

  36. Wait. So is he the police guy in TKEM???

  37. My bad!

He is NOT the police in TKEM. Gosh he’s a dead-ringer for Kim Kyung Nam, the police, in TKEM. 🥴

    Gosh. He’s a

  38. Blimey, there goes my tea everywhere. It’s Kang Shin-Jae, right? Real name Kim Kyung Nam. He had a crush on Tae-Eul and was faithful to her despite any temptation. He’s 31 now, so a reasonable age. I wouldn’t mind, but what’s he doing to us with those OTT photos? It reminds me of when he started at the police station. He brought in a criminal, but the other officers thought that he was the thug and the criminal was the new-hire.

  39. Sorry @Fern. 😂 I made a mistake. They’re different actors. The one with the abs pix is a new guy from Squid Game.

The pix are from “Men’s Health Magazine.” I don’t read those mags (really, I don’t) so beats me why the pictorials ended up that way. I thought he’d be lifting weights or something. 😂

  40. Are they twins or from a parallel universe? 🤪😆

  41. @Fern, staring at these naked chests remind me that proverb “all cats are gray in the dark.”

In this case though, all manly chests are sculpted under klieg lights. Where’s MooHak fake tiger tattoos when I need a good laugh? 😂

  42. @packmule3, I was thinking along the lines of ‘any port in a storm.’ Pfffft.
I think the muscles are fine, but feel a bit bad that these guys have to show them off quite so blatantly.

I saw that man in an interview on the news with other actors. Live, he looked less like Kim Kyung Nam, but he was attractive.

  43. @packmule3 and any others with a scientific interest in Wi Ha Joon, an article in Soompi says that he will be in the show ‘Little Women.’ A Laurie-type character, I presume.
