Yumi’s Cells: Hiatus Open Thread

While waiting for Season 2 of “Yumi’s Cells” to begin, here’s thread where we can speculate on Yumi’s boyfriend #3 and future husband.

@Janey is betting on this guy, Woo DoHwan.

Fern and I wouldn’t mind Lee Jaewook (so I can erase my disappointment with “Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol”).

Actor Lee Jaewook Wins Hearts with His Real Personality, Just the Opposite of His Role in 'Extraordinary You'

Who’s your guess?

Here’s how the character Soonrok looks like from the Naver Webtoon.

I’m also excited to see the rest of Yumi’s Cells. I don’t know which one I can relate to the most. “Rational” cell? “Naughty” cell? Doesn’t she have a “Bitchy” cell? I’ll have to wait and see.

Edited 11/10/21 to add more “Husband Candidates” for Yumi.

From @Welmaris, here’s Jung Hae In. He’s got my vote, too. I don’t know who’s cuter, though. Kim GoEun or Jung HaeIn.

@Skayt, @Nrllee and I like Gong Myung, too. But he’s enlisting soon to serve the country, as you said.

Bye, kiddo!

Speaking of military service, Seo Kang Joon is also enlisting this month, @GMPL. So he won’t be in the running. Do you know that Seo Kang Joon, Gong Myung, and Kang TaeOh (“Run On,” “Doom at Your Service” and “Tale of Nokdu”) are in the same actor-idol group called 5urprise?

@Growing_Beautifully, I agree. I like Kim Young Kwang, too. His exuberance is irrepressible.

But he can look woebegone, too.

@GB, he has a movie on Viki, “Mission Possible.” He plays an accidental spy who teamed up with a North Korean female agent to catch an arms dealer. I caught the tail end of it and it looks funny. It’s still on my to-watch list.

@Fern, I’ll have to agree with you. As much as I like Bae In Hyuk, the 2nd male lead in “My Roommate is a Gumiho” I don’t think he’s ready for Kim GoEun. Nor is Hwang InYoup, the 2nd male lead in “True Beauty.” And are they really better than Ahn BoHyun and Park JinYoung???

Edited 11/12/21.

Wi Ha Joon’s name has now been added to the list. He was recently voted as one of the sexiest men in 2021 by People Magazine. Ha! Even before this announcement we knew he was sexy because he appeared on the Men’s Health (otherwise known as “Women’s Heart Attack” lol) magazine.

@GB has more info on him.

I’m like @GB. I thought he looked like the police officer in “The King: Eternal Monarch.”  But that was played by actor Kim Kyung Nam.

@GB also mentioned that Lee YiKyung.

And for some reason these 2 reminded me of Lee Yi Kyung, although he does not look the same… maybe something similar in the mood of the characters they play? I liked him in Children of Nobody.

No waaaaay, @GB. For me, Lee YiKyung was, is, and forever will be Chewbacca aka Werewolf aka Wolverine.

It would be 100% hilarious if he ends as Yumi’s husband, though.

Hi @pkml3, I’m not doing any research as to who’s available, and when they’d start to work on Season 2 of Yumi’s Cells, but I was thinking, if only Lee Sang Yi hadn’t been the Ji Ugi jerk who broke her heart, I’d have like him to be the ‘husband’.

Jung Hae In is appropriate, age-wise and Yoo Seung Ho is 2 years younger, but he can play older. I haven’t seen these 2 in a while.

  2. I’d also like to see Jung Hae In act again with Kim Go Eun. Tune in for Love was an exercise in bad timing for their characters, so I’d like to see them actually spending more time together onscreen.

  3. Thanks @PM3! WDH GIF is taking me to Shallow Island. LOL! He is a good actor, first and foremost and will match KGE’s presence.

I like Lee Jae Wook as well. I’ve started watching Search WWW (now in Netflix) and he is a side character who plays a kdrama actor who is a tsundere and he looks different here. I hope he has another show as a male lead.

@GB – incidentally, Lee Sang Yi may be in the same drama as Woo Do Hwan! If it pushed through, that will be a good watch with these actors.

  4. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Janey Thanks for the info…what fun! I looked it up. The Show is (supposed to be called) ‘Hunting Dogs’ and it even has Kim Sae Ron in it. Interesting premise too that an employer lends money without interest to his employees. We have to watch to know if there’s a catch or if this is truly altruistic.

As for Yumi’s new guy, I’m happy with all the actors mentioned. 🙂

  5. I love those two – either would be good. If we were to guess based on the wedding photo, LJW is too tall. If we guess based on the anime, Kwak Dong Yeon would match well. He is often cast as older than his actual age.

He, WDH, LSY, are all in upcoming dramas. I am looking forward to that. I don’t know Jung Hae In, but I’m open minded. As @Janey says, it has to be an actor who can match Kim Go Eun’s presence. Seo In Guk? If they go with a more inexperienced actor, with luck, they will rise to the occasion as Na In-woo did in RWTMR. (He’s too tall, as well. Imo, it’s so refreshing to rule out tall people. 😁)

  6. @Fern – you are right, it’s refreshing to rule out the tall guys. I was doing search of kdrama actors under 6 feet – oops, did not mean it that way! LOL! Not so tall and younger than Yumi or KGE. It’s a hard search as younger sets of actors are mostly tall. I remember 2nd leads in True Beauty and My Roommate is a Gumiho, both have decent acting chops. Have to search the names.

  7. @Janey, of course the photo may be misleading as well if the actor has yet to be cast. We only know it’s not Ahn Bo-hyun, isn’t that right? I may have missed something – why does he need to you younger than Yumi?

The 2nd ML in True Beauty was Hwang In-youp. The 2nd ML in My Roommate is a Gumiho was Bae In-hyuk. I liked both, but am not sure that they are experienced enough to make sense in this casting.

  8. If Yumi’s husband is younger than her and the viewers want someone who’s younger than Kim Go-eun, I think they consider the likes of Park Bo-gum, Seo Kang-joon, Nam Joo-hyuk, Yang Se-jong and a lot more. Yumi’s husband looks somewhat tall in some images that I’ve searched here in the net. Hahaha.

  9. Maybe we shouldn’t put too much emphasis on the height of Yumi’s mystery groom in the wedding photo we see in her library. My guess is that the photo was taken with a stand-in for the groom, as filming for that season likely hasn’t begun. But if we’re eliminating tall actors, Park Bo Gum is out of the running for the role. He’s tall.

Two shorter Kdrama actors whose work I’ve enjoyed are Do Kyung Soo (DO) from 100 Days My Prince and Kim Min Seok (the SML from Because This Us My First Life and Lovestruck in the City).

  10. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I happened along the OST for Chicago Typewriter and suddenly I thought that I wouldn’t mind seeing Yoo Ah In, Go Kyung Pyo or Kwak Si Yang again. I haven’t seen 2 of them in a while (they are in shows I don’t watch). They might make interesting ‘husband’ material. 😉

  11. Yoo Ah In!! 👍👍

Yes, but… I think a project like this is a small fry for him. He’s doing fine with movies already.

    Go Kyung Pyo ✅
K wak si Yang ✅ This poor guy. He deserves to be a male lead now.

  12. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I just thought of another actor I’d like to watch again. Kim Young Kwang. I loved his styling and debonair look in Secret Life of My Secretary. Silly show (with the effervescent Veronica Park!) but I loved it to bits and rewatched it LOL.

  13. I’ve also heard pushes for Gong Myung (Lovers of the Red Sky). Hae In’s also a popular favorite, and I’ve seen posts doing torso and veiny hand comparisons between him and the wedding photo. teehee There’s been a lot of love from fans from his Tune in For Love performance.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing Chae Jong-Hyeop, because he’s got that sweetness about him. In other webtoon pictures, I thought Soonrok looked like Jo Byeong-Gyu, but I think he might be too soon after controversy?

  14. @GB – chicago Typewriter is one of my kdrama favorites, love the OST (especially the Boni Pueri Czech boys choir songs) and the overall show although I suspend disbelief on the OTP’s age difference. YAI is such a good actor and he is one of my top bias (in the kids’ parlance these days). YAI + KGE will be a powerhouse casting, I would think a movie will be more appropriate. It’s been awhile since KGE has a movie.

One other thing I want to call out on Yumi’s Cells is that the story really revolves around Yumi (warts, cells and all). There are shows you would think is mainly about the FL but eventually loses steam and the ML’s story takes the forefront (my complaint on Her Private Life). Don’t get me wrong, I like the story and the pairing of the leads but I was misled by the title. 😛

  15. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Janey So true about Chicago Typewriter’s OST. Haunting and poignant. I like the choir too. Oh … I really liked that dog LOL.

  16. Hi All!
I haven’t read the web-series and I’m just throwing out names based on who I like or think would be good with Kim Go Eun… I think Yang Se Joon is being discharged soon or he already has been. He enlisted around the same time as Woo Do Hwan. I would love to see him, Seo Kang Joon, Go Kyung Pyo, or Jung Hae In with Kim Go Eun. Those boys know how to turn the chemi on!
There has been a general trend in Korea with an older woman and younger man these days. The nuna romance has been hot for a while now. If this show is going in that direction, maybe Cha Eun Woo, Ahn Hyo Seop or Park Bo Gum.
I miss seeing Yang Se Joon on the screen and I would really love to see him in this show.

  17. Looks like Gong Myung will be enlisting, so he likely can’t be a candidate.

  18. Booooo. I like Gong Myung. But oh well, let’s look at other actors then.

  19. How about the Imoogi guy from Tail of the Nine Tailed? Does he have a good chance to be paired to a high profile actress like Kim Go-eun? I think Lim Si-wan also suits the role of Yumi-s husband. Haha.

  20. @GMPL, I really really like Im Si-wan’s acting but imo he doesn’t kiss convincingly.

  21. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@GMPL I forgot about Kim Bum (Tale of the Nine-Tailed) and Im Shi Wan (loved his Jang Gu Rae in Misaeng). They are definitely the ‘right age’ for Yumi, and they haven’t been in the recent Shows I’ve watched too.

  22. @GB they are older than KGE, but still looks younger, and can make themselves look casual/simple guy for the role.

@Fern I’m not a good judge when it comes to kissing scenes, but I consider the male lead is good if he can easily make the female lead’s heart flutter without kissing. Pick-up lines, subtle aegyo (not the cringy ones) and a convincing portrayal from the actor.

  23. @GMPL, of course that is important. An actor who can portray tenderness well is very heart-fluttering to the FL and the viewer as well. I do like me a good snog, though. 😚😘

  24. Woah! @unnie_shimkoong! Yang Se Jong wasn’t on my radar till you mentioned him. He’s a cutie; I remember him from “Thirty But Seventeen” and yes, he can definitely hold his own against Kim GoEun.

Will add his picture to the thread for future reference.

  25. @Fern,

I’m beginning to suspect that Im SiWan has a “no-kissing” clause in his contract. 🙂

I’m not sure this kind of romcom appeals to him. To me, he wants to be viewed as a “serious” actor, a CHARACTER actor.

Also, he strikes me as perfectionist.

He might not be Kim Go Eun’s cup of tea. I don’t know…

  26. He was in a Romance called Run On. I liked it and enjoyed the background into elite sports in Korea, but was most interested in Im Si Wan when he got angry. The rest of the time, I just enjoyed watching him. The romance wasn’t completely convincing but that was possibly the fault of the script as well.

  27. I updated the thread to include new gifs of the husband contenders.

  28. Thank you, @packmule3. 🤩

  29. @packmule thanks for the mention. I’m surprised that Gong Myung, Seo Kang-joon and Kang Tae-oh were bandmates. I only thought GM’s younger brother is the only k-pop music star in their family. Haha. So SKJ’s out of the picture, I’m pretty sure he fits the role though 😄.

Since some of us here suspects that Yumi’s husband isn’t super tall, I’ve search some actors standing 170 to 180 cm., and here’s some of them:

    Kim Min-jae
    Yeo Jin-goo
    Jang Dong-yoon
    Jinyoung (B1A4)
    Kim Myung-soo/L (INFINITE)
    Yoo Seung-ho (already mentioned 😅)

  30. Thanks @PM3 for the additional GIFs!
I hope one of our favorites get picked. Very exciting, can’t wait…

  31. Wait. Remember Wi Ha Joon? I mentioned him in that other thread as a potential husband for Yumi. I confused him for that other actor in “The King: Eternal Monarch.”

He was recently voted one of the sexiest men of 2021 by People magazine.

  32. I loved Wi Ha Joon since Romance is a Bonus Book. I’m so happy he blew up. <3 He's such a talented actor and I have no complaints about how he looks without a shirt.
He would make a great husband for Yumi!
He totally looks like that cop from The King. Haha

  33. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    @Unnie Shimkoong
You’re right! These two actors look quite similar at a glance and I think I was mistaking one for the other the whole time I’ve seen them.

And for some reason these 2 reminded me of Lee Yi Kyung, although he does not look the same… maybe something similar in the mood of the characters they play? I liked him in Children of Nobody.

    https://asianwiki.com/Lee_Yi-Kyung

  34. @PM3 – you have to edit in Wi Ha Joon in your post. He played a cop in Squid Games and I’m glad he gets a good exposure out of that show. I don’t mind that chesty picture, too! He would fit in the shallow island, was it the manly peaks? 😉

@GB, did you deliberately attach the same person in the link? I thought I was seeing the same person and they are the same person. LOL!!!

  35. GrowingBeautifully (GB)
  36. Blimey O’Reilly! as my MIL would say. @packmule3, what a photo!

  37. I’ve only seen Lee Yi Kyung in super goofy roles in Waikiki and Go Back Couple. I can’t picture him with Yumi 🤣

  38. Wi HaJoon.

Even his last name sounds like girls are squealing, “wee weee weeee.”

I hope his sudden popularity doesn’t lead to his downfall like Mr. Trash errr… Good Boy/Dimples.

  39. Same here, unnieshimkoong.

I don’t recognize the name Lee YiKyung but as soon as I opened GB’s file, I knew it was that funny Werewolf guy from “Eulachacha Waikiki.”

I’ll edit the thread and post the pic.

  40. I’m at the point where I feel that the K-drama actors should just say, I’m a bad boy/a grumpy sod/a bad role model – get used to it. Then they can be as nice or awful as they please. It must be so stressful to have to maintain a saintly demeanor whenever the camera is on, even if they are generally nice people.

I saw a little bit of a show with Gong Myung and his brother. His brother, who IS said by his group members to be tempermental, seemed to be doing a lot to get Gong Myung to react – typical younger brother behaviour. Gong Myung, who apparently still lived at home with his parents, was on the defensive all of the time. I felt bad for him, although I believe that they are close.

  41. @Fern,

What’s that show with Gong Myung? Would like to skim through it.

I used to like watching “Running Man” because I can see how their guests react in real-time. Of course, there’s some editing that goes behind-the-scene, but there are some personality quirks that can’t be hidden.

I think fangirls should just shut up. They’re the ones who are deifying these scumbags.
If they weren’t delusional and such poor judges of character, they would have known that this Mr. Dimples was too good to be true. I seem to recall some media-play about his charitable donation to some orphanage or children’s hospital or cancer research or whatever. That’s rich in irony, considering that he didn’t want to shell-out money for his own potential flesh-and-blood.

Another actor that I find dubious is Choi JinHyuk — he’s the lead in “Zombie Detective.” Although I like his performance in that show, there’s something about him that I find suspect. (lol. You could say that I’ve been around many people like him in my line of work…)

  42. @packmule3, I’ve seen these on YouTube: there are several. It’s the sort of banter my husband does with his brother, except they aren’t on camera and his brother gives as good as he gets. Here is one that is sort of in the middle:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmwRh2KVHb4

I liked Choi Jin Hyuk in Zombie Detective and in Mr Queen. I think there was something about him in the news lately though. Violating Covid or some such.

  43. Alrighty, this hiatus post is hot! 🔥

Thanks for the additional photos and links @PM3 and @GB. Wi Ha Joon even has a connection with KGE – his first movie was with her in Coin Locker Girl!

  44. GM was on a show called The Manager (or Omniscient Interfering View), so that address only gives you a part of what was filmed. There are other segments as well.

They also teased each other on Instagram about Doyoung borrowing Gong Myung’s clothes. https://www.koreaboo.com/news/nct-doyoung-argument-cute-instagram-gongmyung-brother/

  45. Thanks, Fern. I watched the first clip. Will see if I can find more on YT tonight.

I’ve not familiar with the younger brother.

I think GM should come and live with my sons to learn a thing or two about the art of ripostes. My boys take after their uncles. They’re so quick with their quips and clapbacks but it’s hard to get mad when the wit is trenchant. Even when they were young, fist-fighting wasn’t necessary, and size didn’t matter, because insults — and a thick skin — easily won the day.

  46. @Janey, this hiatus thread isn’t going on hiatus any time soon. 🙂

This is all for “research”. 🕵️‍♀️🔎

  47. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Heh! @Unnie Shimkoong and @pkml3. I took never associated Lee Yi Kyung with anything serious, but his role in Children of Nobody was weighty and he wowed me for the first time. I want to see him again playing a non-silly character.

  48. 😂 I think Lee YiKyung can play his own Cell. He can perform all his cells, and be hysterically funny, too.

  49. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

LOL @pkml3 I’ll never look at Lee Yi Kyung in the same way again!!!

  50. @packmule3, Dong Myung’s younger brother is in a popular K-pop group run by the same agency as Do Kyung Soo’s group. He sings well – has an unusual voice. He does a lot of covers. Here’s one I found. A good voice must run in the family; I think Gong Myung was a singer in 5urprise rather than a rapper.

  51. @packmule3 Hahahaha! He is 100% a cell.
@GB I’ll add Children of Nobody to my list. I would love to see him in a different role. I feel like I saw Lee Yi Kyung play a villain in a movie…. I can’t remember

  52. Lee Yi-kyung is good and versatile. He can sing too. And if you don’t mind, you can find a picture of him… shirtless. Hahaha. Too bad, actor Son Seung-won, his co-actor in ‘Welcome to Waikiki’ got involved in a DUI lawsuit almost 3 years ago. In my opinion, he also looks good to be Yumi’s husband.
