Thanks so much @pkml3. I do hope you can find time to join us. We’re dying to know how you saw clues that pointed to Sunny being Wang Yeo, and Grim Reaper being Kim Sun. 😁 πŸ˜Άβ€πŸŒ«οΈ (face in clouds) 😘

    πŸͺ πŸ₯› 🍩 β˜• 🧁 🍡 πŸͺ πŸ₯› 🍩 β˜• 🧁 🍡

  2. Thanks for the reminder and the time change @PM3. Here we go, 5AM wake up call. πŸ˜‰

  3. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @Janey! Wow 5am!!! That’s dedication. But were you waking up at 4am or at 6am before this???

  4. @GB, @Janey and @PM3, personally I think that Grim Reaper is Wang Yeo πŸ˜‰ . That said it will be an interesting detective work to decide πŸ˜€ . Will read you tomorrow!!!

  5. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi Dear Friends and Rewatches of Goblin, something urgent has cropped up on my end, therefore I’ll be late for tonight’s Rewatch Party. Please start without me at the usual time, and I’ll jump in to join you when I can.

  6. Dear all, Just finished reading last week’s comments and have so much fun! After reading your inspiring views and comments, I think that I need another rewatching! Hate that I didn’t work harder in English writing when I was a student. By the way, here is the music while the goblin cut off the car at the very beginning of episode 3.

Air on the G String (J. S. Bach)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvglW3KNSsQ

    See you later!

  7. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks @Kuroshio! I hear this music in the latest streaming of Goblin now, but when it first aired, the music was “Time to Say Goodbye” sung by Sarah Brightman. I have it video recorded. It’s so funny how the car split and the song played. It’s mentioned also on Dramabeans, which means that the music was changed later on after the first airing. Maybe there was some copyright thing?? But anyway, I find “Time to Say Goodbye” funnier although this piece is also great for that scene.

Here is the scene with Sarah Brightman’s voice.

  8. @GB hope everything is OK!!!… or is at least solvable. Hope your MIL is fully well… Will keep an eye on this thread the whole day.

For the rest of our Friends, Hello!!! (Kalimera from my side of the world πŸ˜‰ ). I am already charging my stream from WatchAsian and already have my arepas on the pan XD .

  9. @GB, yes I remembered the original so when I heard “Air on G string” by Johan Sebastian Bach it sounded odd… and started to doubt my own memory XD XD XD XD XD XD .

  10. I’m here already, but will step away to get a cup of tea before we start. @Janey, I hope your alarm can nudge you out of sleep so you can join today’s watch party. @GB, we Pacific Time folks had been waking at 5:30am during Daylight Savings Time, but now with Standard Time have to be up by 4:30am. @FGB I hope your stream behaves well and your arepas tastes wonderful.

  11. @Welmaris, given the state of my Venezuela both things together is a blessing to be counted! XD . In a moment I will make some coffee and will join you. 4:30 am… Oh Laaaaaaaady!!! that is some dedication!!! πŸ˜€

  12. Kalispera! I am here! πŸ™‚

  13. Time to Say Goodbye is indeed funnier. I’ve watched the episode, but family activities may make it difficult for me to attend later.

One thing I noticed in this episode is the silent moments between KS and ET. Much said while nothing verbalised. Such good acting, especially by Gong Yoo.

I noticed that Sunny didn’t want a prince – she told Eun Tak that she preferred a king.

  14. @GB Unnie,

I just saw that you will come a bit later! I do hope all is well with you!

    2 minutes to go!

  15. Let’s start!

  16. The sword is fluorescent, kinda like a green – blue fire.
It depends on Kim Shin’s mood..

  17. Kalimera @Cleo!!!, how are things in Greece?, hello Fern!!!, we will just enjoy our time with you πŸ˜‰ . As always you can come back later πŸ˜€ .

    And yes, let’s GO!!!

  18. Hello Ladies! I am here!

@GB Thank you!.Did not know about that, and yes, time to say good bye is much more funny!!

  19. Kalimera @FGB,

We are all good, although we have a rise on our covid numbers.

I am on their banter but I can wait for you!

  20. Hey @Kuroshio! Welcome!

  21. He cursed his immortality and when the actual opportunity to die presents he -finally* wants to make his limited time matter πŸ™‚

  22. Eun Tak looks like a kdrama character, stating all her misfortunes, wait she is one! πŸ˜›

  23. Anyeong dear rewatchers!!! I’m here, still setting up a bit. I see @welmaris is also up early. Will catch up in a bit.

  24. Kalispera, Cleo, @FGB and @Kuroshio. I’m here for a while.

  25. @FGB,

The Goblin is terrified in the aspect to die…LMAO

  26. Hello @Kurioshio and welcome to the fold πŸ˜‰ . @Cleo, poor thing has to vent πŸ˜‰

  27. Hey @Fern!

I just love Kim Go Eun saying all those things! LMAO!

  28. @FGB,

Kim Go Eun is a great actress. The way she said: “Sexy?” makes me laugh every time!

  29. Anyeonaseiyeo dear @Janey, how have you been? πŸ˜€ . Cloudy morning here in Caracas, how is it in your part of the world?

  30. Welcome @Janey ! πŸ™‚

  31. Ha, yes, @Cleo. Her offering to be a sexy wife, or professional, or changing it up.

  32. I love Gong Yoo in this part!
It looks like Kim Shim is suffering and he is not stable. LMAO!

Lee Dong Wook does the same. They are so good!

This part is a great adlib by all of them!

  33. Hello @FGB @Clepatra @Fern @Janey @Wel glad to have you guys here!

KS is such a twisted person…

  34. That suite of rooms ET is given is luxurious, but not nearly (to me) as warm and pretty as the house. I can see why she is uncomfortable.

  35. This episode’s beginning is a perfect blend of soundtrack and cinematography. “Where I am…who I am…” Goblin had spent 900 lonely years, and I feel a bit of it seeing him facing his fate with Eun Tak.

Goblin runs to Grim Reaper, leaving Eun Tak outside, to spill his mixed feelings about her seeing the sword. He admits he isn’t keen on dying ASAP

Eun Tak is speaking truth to Goblin and Reaper, but that doesn’t discount how good she is at manipulating their feelings. This girl is a survivor. Those guys are toast.

Eun Tak and Goblin face off, trying to come to terms about her request to live in the house. I like that she asks about Option 4, planning and hoping, judging her options and trying to nudge them in her favor.

Gong Yoo plays Goblin’s mixed emotions about his end in a comical way here. I don’t buy that the character is experiencing deep emotions. But I’ll give Gong Yoo a pass because it is all so entertaining. We’ll get more angst later.

  36. @Fern,

She is also alone in a big hotel suit. She doesn’t need that as a teenager, she wants to have company around her…

Secretary Kim does his first appearance spying Yoo Duk-Hwa.

  37. Her mercenary streak is kind of adorable… and creepy at the same time XD XD XD XD XD XD .

  38. Hello @Cleo, @FGB, @Kurushio, @Fern and @Welmaris!!! Bright and early (although slightly late) from this side of the world. Strangely enough, it was a very foggy evening last night and it looks like the fog stayed until this morning. Feeling the change of weather and temp now.

  39. Ha, when Goblin says Who wants to fight me? But afterwards the rain and ET knows why.

  40. @Janey,

I do hope you are okay! It is sunny over here, since is 3:20am. I do hope the fog won’t stay for long.

  41. It’s cloudy here, but that’s Devon all over.

I love the gold/punishment. And they can’t remember anything. Makes them look very sus.

  42. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi Everyone, I just got in. Read your comments so I roughly know where you’re at. So good to see many of you.

Thanks for your conceron @FGB. I was at a wake for a relative. It was a sad occasion but at the same time a chance to catch up with other relatives whom I have’t seen in at least 2 years.

OK I’m going to jump in and watch now!!!

  43. @Growing Beautifully. Condolences. I hope it went as well as possible.

  44. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @Cleo, just saw your message. Yes, I’m fine!

  45. I love watching the faces of KGE and GY as they act their roles. Their micro expressions and their acting β€œeyes” are mesmerizing.

KS has been waiting for his bride to take the sword off but now that the bride is really here, he is not prepared and is super anxious, even drinking meds. And online shopping. LOL!

She is indeed the bride but was left alone. I like that she demanded to be β€œseen”.

  46. @GB Unnie,

My condolences… Good to know that you are okay!

    @Janey,

Samshin was doing a documentary on TV about mental illnesses. I found it smart since we were watching Kim Shin and Hanza experiencing some of the symptoms she was saying.

  47. Condolences dear @GB.

  48. When Duk Hwa speaks to GR about the woman who made him cry on first sight, had GR mentioned that in DH’s presence? I can’t recall. When DH said ‘Men should take responsibility’ and that she might remember something he can’t, I think he is referring to the past, but GR might think he is referring to something in Sunny’s lifetime.

  49. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    Thanks for your condolences, everyone!

Part where they are taking the medication:
KS is conflicted about finding the bride he’d been searching for, for 900 years. He’s especially conflicted because she’s a young person who is enthusiastically thinking that they are meant to stick together and to start a family, when the reality is so devastating. ET sees marrying KS as the place where she belongs, after having been alone, homeless, and discarded.

KS is avoiding the heartbreak of telling her that this is far from the truth. It is a very cruel destiny that ET has unknowingly embraced. She will be the means of causing the death of the one who will mean everything to her, while living on alone, bearing the trauma of being his killer. The god who came up with this plan is a horrible god.

  50. Nam Da-Reum <3

  51. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I loved all the scenes of them acting out their mental issues – LOL over confidence and tummy exposure.

  52. @GB Good to see you!

@Welmaris Love your summary! Very interesting!

  53. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Poor ET hears thunder and sees rain. She attributes it to KS not liking her to be his bride (as children do… they tend to blame themselves). I feel that KS was clueless about communicating that something else was bothering him, although he couldn’t/wouldn’t tell her what. It would have made her feel less disliked.

  54. @GB Unnie,

Indeed such a fate is a horrible. As we have discussed with @FGB, this God is malevolent for me.

  55. I wonder how many Kdramas have used this same building as their high school.

It is clear from his discussion with Eun Tak in front of the school that Duk Hwa isn’t always in almighty mode, as he isn’t all-knowing in regard to Eun Tak’s identity.

I’m amused by how magic weaves into characters’ lives without them even knowing. Sam Shin on TV as a mental health expert? Hilarious! ET’s aunt and cousins not being able to think or speak clearly…part of Goblin’s punishment.

I wonder how Goblin knows when someone he cares about passes away, even if at a great distance from him.

Eun Tak is suffering because she doesn’t understand why Goblin is avoiding her. Her deep hope to be part of a family is being thwarted for reasons she can’t fathom.

If it is possible to be partially omniscient, Goblin has that characteristic. He knew the French boy hadn’t answered the test question with the answer Goblin had given him.

We get to see tipsy Goblin. Only two cans of beer get him giddy and stumbling. I am going to offer this as evidence that he and Sunny share genetics, as they both can’t handle alcohol. Sunny says she doesn’t let it come near her lips. In contrast, Grim Reaper can drink several cans of beer in one sitting.

  56. Hope the weather clears up.

Geez, ET’s relatives cannot even remember her name. Or is it KS’ doing that they can’t even remember their home address. LOL!!! That’s probably their punishment so they can’t report her to the police.

Reaper also can’t remember if he has seen Sunny before. I love his description of Sunny and acting out the hair flip.

  57. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I’ve always wondered about DH’s being the almighty… it either comes and goes as the god flutters about, or he is good at pretending not to know.

  58. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Janey, the relatives not remembering ET’s name or where they used to live are part of the punishment from Goblin. LOL That was such good punishment.

  59. @Welmaris,

I think he became drunk because he is sad. He is mourning and he cannot handle the alcohol. It is though, a nice example about the siblings. They cannot handle their liquor.

  60. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

DH asks Reaper why ET is the goblin’s bride.
GR : “Who knows. Perhaps it’s a prank from god?” (God is frequently dissed and misunderstood, and right in front of him LOL. He was probably displeased.)
DH : “Oh, so that’s why Uncle is depressed. She’s not his type, is she? What a terrible prank on god’s part.” (He actually dares to say it himself!!!)
GR freezes a dish and it cracks.
DH : “Don’t have such a serious expression on your face. It’s scary! Is it because of that woman? The one you cried in front of when you first saw her? Think about it carefully. Maybe it’s not the first time you two have met. Men shouldn’t be like that, you know! Take responsibility!” (DH giving a hint and good advice.) “You may not be able to remember that day, but that woman might remember something.”
GR is totally smitten as he remembers how Sunny flipped her hair and kissed the paper.

GR stands on the bridge to see her but she doesn’t walk by. So both he and Sunny take to the same means of trying to locate each other again.

  61. @Cleo, but once he has drunk, he becomes a happy, chatty drunk. I like how he offers to buy whole rows of things at the convenience store. Many different toothbrushes including microfibre! So funny.

  62. Here this scene where he says that Eun Tak is his first and last bride.
This exact look at his eyes. I loved that scene. It shows Kim Shin’s vulnerability.

  63. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I like the Nam Da Reum scenes, like this one.

He comes in as an old man, turned young again and he recognises KS.
He had grown into a man who had helped others as a lawyer to pay back for the sandwich that KS had given him.

Boy : “Most people don’t forget the miraculous epiphanies in their lives.”
KS : “I know. I’ve given sandwiches to thousands of people. But there weren’t many other like you. Most people get stuck in that miraculous moment and ask for help once more. Saying they know you’re there, somewhere. As if they are owed another miracle. You changed your life on your own. And for that reason, I’ve always cheered you on.”

This is so true that the disease of ‘entitlement’ is rife. Few are grateful for what they have or receive and expect so much more. That sandwich represented a gracious gift from ‘god’ and KS represented a model to imitate.

  64. @Fern,

I agree with you. I like all that part. He was keeping his distance and then voila, Eun Tak asks him the right questions.

  65. I have my arepas, my coffee and put water to boil. Really no one respects the Nephew (well, is not that he DESERVES respect XD XD XD XD XD )

  66. I’m wondering how does it feel that the one you love has a sword in his heart and you see it ever minute when you are with him. I don’t think that I have courage to be with him.

Love the line: Not today.I’ll just laugh with you for tonight.

  67. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

ET summons KS who is standing in the lobby, hesitating to go up.
She accuses him of being busy avoiding her. She’s angry because whether she sees the sword or not she’s being abandoned.

ET to KS : “What does that make me? A deserted wife? What am I then? (Her repeated question on her identity). You avoid me because you’re a goblin, and then avoid me saying you’re not one! Then you avoided me because I couldn’t see the blade and now you’re avoiding me because I can! This is so unfair! You’re so immature!” (She feels like she’s in a no win situation, even when it looked like a winning situation to be the Goblin’s Bride. KS never anticipated her needs or figured out what to do when he found his bride.)

  68. Here is a motiv. When the first snow comes.

The soundtrack has two songs about the first snow and what means to them.
One is Eun Tak’s POV and the other Kim Shin’s.

Yoo Duk-Hwa is scolding Kim Shin about the cherry trees blossoming in Autumn.

  69. @Welmaris I think this is also the school used in True Beauty. It has a beautiful facade.

The life lessons with the French boy (who now grew old and passed away) who had a life well lived. I guess KS has a radar as most likely, the people he cares about also pray to him so he knows how they are going.

  70. Does anyone know which tv series they were watching?

“Eun Bin is Hy Jin’s daughter.”

  71. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I like tipsy Goblin. He always offers to get her a whole bunch of things on the shelves. He gets drunk on just 2 cans of beer. But he did have the medication earlier.

She’s always asked for a boyfriend and KS has always said no, reserving that role for himself although he won’t admit to being attracted to her.

ET : “What are you going to do about my third wish, then? The boyfriend!”
KS : “You’ll never have one. Not in this lifetime. So don’t look forward to it.”
    ET : “Why?”
KS : “Because I don’t want you to.”
ET : “You can’t do that. Do you like me?”
KS : “Um, no.” (A lie).
ET : “Your no’s don’t always mean no, though.” (He lies to not get into/get out of sticky situations, and ET has figured out that she cannot always believe him.)

  72. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

ET : “So it rains when you’re gloomy, right? What happens when you’re happy?”
KS : “Pass.” (For some reason he did not want to tell her, but I can’t figure out why.)
ET : “What, do you make flowers bloom or something?” (Which he does.)
He looks at her and denies it. But again he lies.
    KS : “Next question.”
    ET : “Can you fly?”
    KS : “Piece of cake.”
ET : “Show me next time.”
    KS : “Sure.”
ET : “How many other brides have there been before me?”
KS : “You’re the first and last one.”
ET : “I understand your saying that I’m your first. But how do you know that I’ll be your last?”
    KS : “Because that’s what I’ve decided.”
    She’s surprised by this answer.
ET : “What happens if I say that I won’t be your bride?”
KS : “Well I won’t ever be able to get this blade out. You’re the only one who can pull it out, you see. And you’ll have to pull out this blade, … for me to be able to become beautiful.”

Good prevarication since he didn’t want to horrify her with the truth.

  73. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I love the music @Cleo and I love the drunk walk with ET. Such a romantic walk in it’s own way… so romantic and yet meaningful and the next day the trees blossomed so beautifully. ET guessed it was Goblin’s work.

The way DH scolds him and in panmal already gives the clue about how he is not just a kid.

  74. Here comes the Goblin with with a savvy SUV to take Eun Tak from school…
    He is also dashing! πŸ˜€

  75. Ya, the bully gets her just desserts! It’s good another student stands up for ET. Good job, ghosties (ghost who are besties)!

  76. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

The scenes where DH can’t seem to see Reaper are so funny. Those supernatural beings never tell him that Reaper is right there.

LOL KS horror when he realises that he revealed the job of the Bride to ET. And LOLOL that Reaper thinks KS’s screaming is a delayed reaction to the soap opera.

  77. @GB,

I have bought the Soundtrack for that reason. So very true.
ABout DH and his scolding I agree with you. He is so serious sometimes that it doesn’t go with his age! It is like he is keeping them within the lines of accepted behaviour!

And they are in Quebec again!

  78. I agree @Cleo! Notice that KS’s coat has fringes. They are back to ET’s happy place, Quebec! Love the scenes here between the 2.

  79. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Sunny says she’s waiting but she does not know for what. “I always seem to be waiting for people.”

She’s on the bridge and waits in her store.

ET : “A prince on a white steed?”
Sunny : “I don’t like guys who are younger than me. If anything I’d want him to be a king on a white steed.” (This suggests that she’s waiting for Wang Yeo, so she is more likely Kim Sun).

  80. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Janey @Cleo I love the scene of KS coming to pick ET up from school … so cool but he’s concerned about what he revealed to her LOL. If not for that, I wonder if he’d have gone to meet her after school.

I also love the Quebec scenes.

Yes, I missed that KS’s long coat had fringes until this rewatch!!! I was so shocked that I missed the fringe. LOL

  81. @Janey,

The customes department did an amazing job giving them great outfits!
I just noticed the fringes now that his coat is on the chair!

So very true about their scenes together. WE are going to listen to THE POEM in a while…

  82. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

The ghosts come in useful and helpful sometimes and ET helps them out with the issues that keep them from passing over.

  83. Eun Tak with her big, scary liturgical candle XD XD XD XD XD . Poor gal, she feels the loneliest when she doesn’t have her loved ones around (even in opulence). For her happiness comes from closeness, guess it is a scar created from her loneliness.

  84. I thought the scene in the restaurant in Quebec was good. ET calls the knives swords and makes KS worried. When she describes the tiger on the sword and KS asks if it’s cool, she says no. I laughed.

  85. I am watching Netflix. Beside the fountain, they have conversation about “sorrow” and “love”. And ET voted for “sorrowful love”.

    Any other translation?
Or anyone knows Korean? Is it a good translation?

  86. Eun Tak knows Goblin well: “Your ‘no’ isn’t necessarily a no.” Even though the give-and-take between Eun Tak and Goblin is being played for humor, when you listen to their words, they are deep. Eun Tak is very level headed, taking many factors into consideration before speaking. Her maturity despite her being young in years is why I am not bothered by her being paired with an ajussi. In many ways she’s behaving like the grown up in this relationship.

ET: About me…What place bride am I?
G: You’re the first and last.
ET: Let’s say it’s the first but how do you know it’ll be the last?
G: Because I’ve decided it to be.
These words are like a wedding vow.

Goblin can’t bring himself to tell Eun Tak the outcome of her pulling out the sword. Her knowledge of magical beings and romances comes from fairy tales. In her mind, happily ever after is a given, even if Goblin becomes a broom when she pulls the sword. She doesn’t doubt that their marriage will lead to their having children and growing old together. Goblin doesn’t want to break Eun Tak’s heart with the truth. “You have no idea. I’m the crazy one for laughing at this situation. Fine. Some other time, then. Not today. Tonight, just let me laugh with you.” At these words Eun Tak’s heart may not break, but mine does.

Goblin must’ve been very happy when tipsy and spending an evening with Eun Tak: not only cherry blossoms, but magnolia blossoms appeared overnight in autumn.

Yes, blame it on the psychotropic medication, Goblin! You should know better than to drink with such drugs in your system.

Again, we see Deok Hwa in human rather than almighty mode, since he can’t see Grim Reaper with his hat on. Grim Reaper is the almighty’s employee, so I’d think the almighty would be able to see GR with our without the hat. So either DH is really good at trolling Goblin and Reaper, or he isn’t the almighty at all times.

The dialog of the morning drama playing on the restaurant TV sparks Goblin’s memories from when he was drunk. (Really? Blackout drunk after two beers?) Again, I enjoy watching Gong Yoo play his character having a funny-crazy reaction, but I’m not really feeling the character, I’m seeing Gong Yoo playing the character for laughs. It’s all good, though, because I’m highly amused.

And a word about fashion: I love Goblin’s socks in this scene.

  87. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Cleo, Ah I like that poem. It was so iconic because he made the shocking discovery that he liked her.

He hears her calling him and he makes the pedestrian crossing change colour as she steps on the strips.
Poem: ‘An object need not be large to have great mass.
That girl, as tiny as a violet.
That girl, drifting in the sky like the petals of a flower
draws me to her with a force
greater than the one exerted by the earth.
In a single moment I fell and rolled toward her
    without rhyme or reason
    just as Newton’s apple did.
With a thump. With a thump, thump.’

ET runs up to him excited and happy : “That red carpet was amazing! You did that, didn’t you? It was amazing.” He stares at her looking serious, as the full import of his feelings descends upon him.

‘My heart bounced from the heavens
to the earth in a dizzying pendular motion.
    Such was the moment
    I’d first fallen in love.’

ET is confused by his seriousness.
    ET “Ahjusshi are you angry?”

A leaf falls on the open book with an ominous thump. The leaf fell on the book just like he fell for her.

  88. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FGB LOL liturgical candle!!! ET values family and relationships, but her mother left her and her only friends were ghosts. Her relatives did not value her. Then when she’s supposed to have a partner for life as a Bride, she finds herself abandoned again. Poor kid.

That big candle says it all.

  89. The fountain scenes were beautiful. From the water fight to the poem with β€œFirst Love” as BGM. I bet @GB has the transcript of the poem. How appropriate. My heart also went β€œthump thump”.

    And that ends ep4.

  90. what a lovely send-off of the 60’s boy!!!, even if he received the “correct” answer from a deity he decided to rely on his own, do the hard work and when the result he got happened to be different from the one Goblin gave he trusted himself and gave HIS own answer.

A character that just spent a little bit of screentime making such an impact πŸ˜€

  91. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

ET : “You bless people, but also unleash your wrath upon them. And you refuse to have a family. And I do wonder if that’s why I was abandoned in the hotel room.”
KS : “I didn’t abandon you. It’s just a measure I took to make you think about all this.” (It was also a measure to keep her safe since she was a girl alone.)
    ET : “Think about what?”
KS : “You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to!”
ET : “What are you talking about?”
KS : “Being the Goblin’s Bride.”
ET observes him closely :: “What are you planning? It feels like you’re hoping I don’t want to be your bride. Why are you saying all this now? Oh, so you hate the fact that I’m the Goblin’s Bride? Or do you have another woman in your life? Even if you don’t, you don’t want me so you don’t want me to be your bride. You said that seeing the blade and then pulling it out are the proper steps to take, right? I’ll pull it out and prove to you that I’m your bride, then! Alright, let’s see if you get all nice and pretty!”

KS runs away and gets chased. This is so cute. I love how he kept running from her as she tried to throw water at him.

From her talk, KS should have seen what was the source of her insecurity ie that he didn’t find her attractive.

  92. “The afterlife is an U-turn”, meaning he made his best to bring Heaven to Earth so his afterlife is living in the dream he worked to achieve πŸ˜€

  93. ET: You’re awfully cheerful for someone who has such a traumatic story.

KS: It’s been almost a thousand years. I can’t be sad for a thousand years. I’m just an energetic goblin who humbly accepts his fates and lives cheerfully.
Where would you find sadness that goes on for a thousand years?
Where would you find a love that goes on for a thousand years?

ET: I give one vote that there is one.

KS: Which side are you going to put it on? On sadness or Love?

ET: A sad love? If you don’t believe me, should we have a bet?

KS: What bet? How far did you research? what else do you know?

ET: You have lived alone for a long time, you are very lonely, fickle, ill-tempered, like dark and humid places…

KS: You researched mainly on bad things…

ET: You bring good fortune and misfortune to people, and you don’t have a family. Maybe that’s why you left me alone in the hotel.

KS: I was taking appropriate measures. You should think about it yourself.

    ET: What thoughts?

KS: If you don’t want to then you don’t have to. You don’t need to force it.

    ET: What?

    KS: Being a Goblin’s bride.

ET: What is your motive? The more I hear about it, I keep noticing you wanting me to hate it. Why are you saying those now? Ah! You don’t want me being the Goblin’s bride? Or you have another woman?
“Even if I have another woman, I don’t like you, so don’t do it.”
Seeing the sword, taking the sword out. That’s the order, right?
I will prove being the bride by pulling that sword out. Let’s see if you become pretty.

    KS: Hey ! Talk while you’re there…

  94. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FGB what a lovely way of putting it. The afterlife is a U-trun because we already make our heaven here. It’s actually very true to me ie I believe that the kingdom of heaven is here and now as well as is being fulfilled.

  95. My refresh rate is so slow as well as my typing… I see @GB’s prom transcript now. Thanks unnie!!! Yes, the maple leaf fell as he fell in love.

@FGB, I have to back and see the liturgical candle. LOL!!!

  96. I stayed a bit behind, because I was trascribing the whole scene!

I love that poem as well @GB Unnie!

  97. The leaf was a red maple leaf like the first one. Caught by the book of poetry in his hands. Lovely.

When they were discussing about what might happen when the blade is pulled out, like when a fairy tale prince goes back to how he was – I could only picture him going back to how his remains would now be, left for 900+ years un-buried in a field. Then he says he would become more beautiful – to keep her reassured.

  98. Kim Shin sees Eun Tak like she will be the death of him… OH WAIT!!! XD XD XD XD XD XD

  99. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Janey, @Cleo I noticed that ET keeps talking like a ‘real bride’ … she mentions the house as a place to bring up kids, and twice she mentions honeymoon. Once when she got out of the car and then …
ET : “Yes, that’s right. All proper honeymoons need a water fight.”

ET has been saying that this was a honeymoon from the time that she came out of the car. KS would have none of this, since she was still not of age and they were supposed to ‘not like each other’.

However, he made sure that they did have a honeymoon of sorts, before their actual wedding, when they were in Quebec again. So apt.

  100. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FGB LOLOLOL yes she’s going to be the death of him.

Loved how scared he was was whenever she pointed knives at him or threatened to pull out the sword. What a wuss of a warrior!!

  101. Dear everyone. It was nice to watch along with you again. I hope that the rest of the weekend is very pleasant for all of you.

  102. Every woman Grim Reaper looks at is a variation of Sunny. What amazing cinematography and editing this is: it flows seamlessly like one long take.

Sunny is sitting in her restaurant with ET, disappointed that she didn’t encounter GR on the bridge after preparing to meet him. She sighs.
ET: But, Owner, why do you always look out the window? Is there something out there?
    S: I’m waiting.
    ET: For what?
S: I don’t know. I’m always just waiting for someone.
    ET: A customer?
    S: No. Sir.
ET: A prince charming on a white horse?
S: I don’t like younger men. Since it came to this, it would be better if it’s a king on a white horse.

I think Sunny is feeling a mixture of emotions from her past life (assuming she was Queen). She suffered pain and death because of her immature husband, so prefers maturity in this life. Her heart is drawn to a king. And she waits patiently for someone. She thinks she’s waiting for Sir, but she’s long had the habit of looking out the window and waiting, so I don’t think she’s just waiting for him. I picture the young queen, standing patiently in the courtyard of the palace, waiting for her brother, General Kim Shin, to arrive.

  103. I have a slight different translation on the poem @GB Unnie!

I love how he is reading the poem.

    Physics of Love

“Mass is not proportional to volume.
A girl as small as a violet.
A girl who moves like a flower petal
is pulling me toward her with more force than Earth’s mass.
    Just then, like Newton’s apple,
I rolled toward her without stopping until I fell on her
    with a loud thud.
    With a thump.
My heart keeps bouncing between the sky and the ground.
    It was first love.

  104. About their *drunken* conversation besides the river… sometimes I think that love is akin to Jazz music, the notes are fundamental but it is the space between them that makes the magic.

  105. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks @Fern, have a great rest of the weekend too!! See you next week. πŸ™‚

  106. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FGB would you liken the persons to the notes of jazz and the careful distance they keep to be the spaces?

  107. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Great @Cleo! I also read that other translation, I think, but I didn’t rewatch the other version of this episode to transcribe it. You’ve done it for me!!! Thanks!

  108. Got to run. Will read comments later.

    See you next week!

  109. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Welmaris, I tend to think of Sunny being the queen too. She has the same disposition of taking whatever action is within her power and then waiting. She made the difficult choices which were the decisions of integrity, and she stood her ground to wait, knowing the consequences.

Kim Sun waited for her brother to write to her (but he didn’t) then to see him again, and for her own death. Dying, she watched the king, waiting for him to turn to look at her, but he didn’t. As Sunny, she waits and it’s going to be hopeless once again.

  110. Grim Reaper seeing Sunny everywhere and Sunny waiting like Penelope…

    Penelope by Joan Manuel Serrat:

  111. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Goodbye @Kuroshio! Thanks for joining us and see you next week!

  112. Again, we get magic affecting a character without that character being aware. Are those ghost friends of ET’s able to put words into the bully’s mouth? (More like they removed her filters and her true nature came out.) I’m glad Class President spoke up on behalf of ET in the face of the bully’s lies about the cigarette. But just the way the bully was holding the cigarette made it obvious she was used to handling them.

The ajumma ghost in purple is one of the triplets in the photo with the shaman that Sunny visited in a previous episode. I’m glad Eun Tak thanked them, acknowledging their help.

Why are ghosts afraid of the Goblin?

The fringe-bottom coat! Even without the fringe, the coat has an amazing cut and fits Gong Yoo so well, but that fringe at the bottom makes it extra fashionable.

Even car doors work as portals for Goblin. Back in Quebec!

  113. Well… let’s try with a more modern cover by Diego Torres:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CedKi4OeNmk

This one is more melancholic, probably more congruent to the lyrics than the original 60’s version.

  114. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Welmaris, Yes I love that car door portal scene … romantic!

I too wonder why ghosts are afraid of Goblin. They should be afraid of Reapers.

  115. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

What a nice song @FGB. I agree that it is appropriate for Sunny’s character in the way she waits.

  116. @GB Unnie,

Glad I helped! I have to go for now! I will read you all laters!

    xo

  117. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Bye @Cleo! Catch you later! πŸ™‚

  118. Clue about the identity of Sunny around 45:20 in watchasian πŸ˜‰ :

Both Sunny and Eun Tak are looking through the window of their empty restaurant, Sunny comments that she always seems to be waiting for someone.

ET: A prince on a white steed?
S: I don’t like guys that are younger than me.If anything, I want it to be a king on a white steed.
    ET: *chucles*

Meanwhile Sunny keeps looking through the window.

  119. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Bye everyone and thanks for a great party! See you next week. πŸ™‚

  120. Goblin and Eun Tak in Quebec for steak dinner. ET gets reactions from Goblin when she comments about the multiple knives in her place setting (There’s a lot of swords!), playfully brandishes one at him, then pointedly (pun intended) stabs her steak to show her displeasure about his trying to verify that she sees the sword.

Because of her research, Eun Tak understands that Goblin was once General Kim Shin, a human. She’s familiar with the goblin mythology that they can be enchanted household items such as a broom. (We viewers were told in a voiceover that an item touched with human blood can also become a goblin.) I wonder if Kim Shin is unique among goblins as having once been human and mortal. The presence of the sword in Goblin confuses Eun Tak, because she hasn’t found references to similar situations in her goblin research. She’s not putting together the sword with Kim Shin being Goblin, and that without the sword he’ll no longer be Goblin.

I’m glad that Goblin answers Eun Tak’s innocent questions simply, and I’m glad Eun Tak senses the pain and sadness of Goblin’s backstory. She’s thoughtful enough to drop the subject when she reads his emotions. When they talk about immortality, Eun Tak assures Goblin she could bear it as long as they’re together. Her words must be a double-edged sword to Goblin: comforting in their promise of companionship, yet devastating because he knows his long life will come to an end once ET pulls out the sword. She won’t get the long life with him she assumes comes with her role as Goblin’s Bride: she won’t even get a regular mortal lifespan with him.

Writernim did such a good job of building the plot tension in this show. We may think that ET and Goblin could live together as husband and wife through her mortal life, then just before she dies she could remove the sword and they could go together. By then they might have children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren! But no, ET is a miscellaneous omitted, and death is always stalking her. Her life could be taken at any time, so her future with Goblin is precarious. And if she wasn’t a miscellaneous omitted, having been saved from death in utero by Goblin himself, she probably wouldn’t be Goblin’s Bride. No bride without life beyond death, no long marriage because of looming death.

  121. While eating steak in Quebec she derides him for being untrusty, when asked how he got that sword in his chest and he responds that he got it from the least expected person, she understood why he had such a hard time to trust her.

  122. That ending with the poetry and the orange street crossing bars was beautifully done πŸ˜€ . Will read some of your comments, then take a nap ;D .

  123. I think ghosts would Like to be at the tea house with grim reaper to close their chapter in this lifetime. Not sure also why they are scared of the goblin.

Like last week, I continued on with ep5… the 2… Er 3 living together is a hoot!

Happy weekend to all! Thanks for a great rewatch!

  124. And Writernim tells us where this is going.

ET: You’re awfully cheerful for someone who has such a traumatic story.
G: It’s been almost a thousand years. I can’t be sad for a thousand years. I’m just an energetic goblin who humbly accepts his fate and lives cheerfully. Where would you find sadness that goes on for a thousand years? Where would you find a love that goes on for a thousand years?
ET: I give one vote that there is one.
G: Which side are you going to put it on? On sadness or love?
    ET: A sad love?

ET is perceptive that Goblin is trying to discourage her from fulfilling her role as Goblin Bride, although she doesn’t understand his motivation. She thinks his hesitation comes from his having a roving eye or his not thinking ET is his type. She wants to prove to him that she’s his fated bride by pulling out the sword, believing that once she’s fulfilled that task they can settle down as husband and wife. She’s fighting for the relationship because it is important to her. She wants Goblin to provide her a sense of family, and enjoys his company, but I don’t know if she’s yet fallen in romantic love with him. For the moment, she’s eager to step into the role she was born to play, but I don’t think she loves Goblin as himself. This is an arranged marriage for her, and with her difficult life she welcomes it because she finds Goblin to be an acceptable fate.

Goblin seems cheered by his time with ET, enjoying her playfulness and reciprocating in kind. Before he became the god of war, a killing machine in service to his king, he must’ve been lighthearted. He’s proud to show off some of his powers to ET, relishing her astonishment. He likes pleasing her, despite his gruff exterior while doing it.

I find it funny that ET turns the tables on Goblin, telling him to wait for her, and he is obedient. This is another sign that their compatibility shouldn’t just be measured by years. ET takes her turns being the dominant one in this pair. And I see them as emotional equals: both bearing pain bravely, both choosing to be cheerful despite harsh circumstances.

ET sends Goblin a letter. When will it arrive? How will it be delivered? We’ve been hooked, and must keep watching to get the answers.

Goblin looks through ET’s textbook, a collection of poetry. It looks to have been well studied, with lots of page markers and notations in ET’s hand. Looking at Goblin looking through the book, it seems he cherishes this opportunity to have another view into ET’s mind. I have no doubt he is falling in love with her. Then he looks up and sees her waving at him, childlike. Some viewers may be put off by her youth relative to his age, but her youth and innocence is necessary for the poem Goblin recites to resonate with viewers. His finding a bride who is a hot babe as Sam Shin appears to be, or a woman jaded by past relationships as Sunny appears to be, just wouldn’t work with these words:

    Physics of Love

Mass is not proportional to volume.
A girl as small as a violet.
A girl who moves like a flower petal
Is pulling me toward her with more force than Earth’s mass.
    Just then, like Newton’s apple,
I rolled toward her without stopping until I fell on her…
    With a loud thud.
    With a thump.
My heart keeps bouncing between the sky and the ground.
    It was first love.

Goblin’s seriousness in this scene indicates to me that he realizes he’s fallen into that sad love for which ET voted earlier. Eun Tak isn’t just Goblin’s first and last bride, she’s his first love.

We end this episode on a meloncholy note. The stakes have been raised, with Goblin having more to lose now that he’s opened his heart to ET. It is an artistically strong ending, with the beautifully filmed scenery, the playful moment when Goblin turned the crosswalk into a game for ET contrasted with his memories of death, the evocative poem, and the music that sounds like a requiem.

I’ll come back to read everyone’s comments after I have breakfast and catch a few more hours of sleep.

  125. Dear @Welmaris, that was beautiful and well-put. Him falling for a kindred spirit even if there are more than 900 years between their birth is poetic. The young bringing life back to the old (cherry blossoms included) and the old protecting and nurturing the new for it to reach its potential.

I have personally some disagreements about certain things in modern world:

1.- People gets icked a lot about age gap differences: The absolute truth is that people should look for the people they want to be with. It is already a miracle to find someone with similar principles, values, outlooks in life and the will to make a realtionship work to throw a wrench for small things like an age gap. As long as both of them are aware of being in different stages in life and are able and willing to work through those discrepancies then all the best for them.

2.- Personally I think we live in a culture that regards variety over substance. Tinder and their variants show that people overlooks the people around them that love and cherish them for complete strangers offering an array of experiences.

So if you know someone since he/she was a child (or teen) and as an adult that person you have known happens to like you, instead of think of it as “grooming” you should feel blessed as that is a relationship that has a past, that is, it has roots. Also a person from your environment is generally a very good bet (best friends turned into a couple has better odds to stay together).

Linking it together I don’t see almost millenary Kim Shin loving a schoolgirl Eun Tak as anathema, but as a beautiful miracle (of course, God is in the details)… and how more blatant “grooming” can it be than saving your future bride even before she was born except of directly raising her? (which may be a problem, but again: God is in the details).

  126. @GB about the Jazz analogy, it is more that the notes are the actions taken in the relationship and the silence between notes is the understanding we have about such individual actions and the music (the relationship) as a whole πŸ˜‰ .

Anyway your idea is also a good one πŸ™‚

Did you take care of your errand successfully?, hope to read you soon!!! πŸ˜€ .

  127. @FGB4877, thank you for the different renditions of “Penelope”. What a beautiful but sad story. I agree with you that sometimes familiarity makes for the best relationships. I happened to marry someone from another continent, but other aspects were very compatible. 😊

@Welmaris, KS said he couldn’t remain unhappy for 1000 years, then added ‘Where would you find a love that goes on for 1000 years?’ ET hadn’t mentioned love that I can recall – so was that on KS’s mind and popped out like a Freudian slip? I think she picks up on it because he mentioned it and combines the two to hypothesise about a Sad Love that could continue for a millenium.

  128. @FGB4877 your comment about being grateful to have both successful streaming and arepas reminds me of my daughter when she spent a summer volunteering as a tutor in Ladakh. (Background: The high school exit / college entrance exams given in India are in both English and Hindi, but for most students in Ladakh their mother tongue is Ladakhi. Despite receiving much of their school instruction in English and Hindi, Ladakhi students are at a disadvantage when taking standardized tests.) Because the Himalayan terrain in Ladakh is so rugged and many people live outside villages, which themselves are often remote, many of the government high schools in Ladakh are boarding schools. A couple of the schools to which my daughter was assigned were as much as a five-hour bus ride to Leh, the state capital. When she had a break and could get back to Leh, she had to get lucky to find an internet cafe that 1) was open 2) had electricity & wifi and 3) had operational computers. She wasn’t always successful finding that combination, so there were long periods between when I’d get emails from her.

Back to Goblin. I asked the question about why ET’s ghost friends are afraid of Goblin. Early in the drama there was a scene of ghosts looking on as newborn ET was being held by her mother, and they seemed to welcome Goblin’s Bride with awe. To me that scene implied a respect for Goblin, not fear or hatred. Perhaps the ghosts’ reactions when they’re talking in a friendly manner with ET then see Goblin approach is because they’re overawed by him. All of ET’s ghost friends seem to be from relatively recent generations, so Goblin’s age alone sets him apart. I imagine that as a god he has powers far beyond those exercised by ghosts. Goblin himself told Reaper that much of his reputation is rumor, so ghosts and reapers must gossip about him. He’s a celebrity. If I came face to face with someone of great renown, I’d probably stumble over my words and my own feet. And the ghosts who are friends with ET know she is Goblin’s Bride, so may fear Goblin’s wrath of he thinks they’re taking advantage of her for her connections.

  129. @Welmaris, you daughter did something truly special by helping those kids, please give her my respects πŸ˜€ . And yes, third world countries are a lot of fun and the people here are lovely in general, but sometimes I would like to live somewhere with reliable services, good security and stable (and well-paying!!!) jobs XD .

I like your theory about Goblin, I get the idea that he is unable to hurt ghosts unless certain circumstances *extreme ones* but more than that I think that Goblin is a whimsical and aloof existence where Eun Tak is consistent in her behaviour and also approachable, so in order to get closer to Goblin Eun Tak is the safest way to get his ear through her intercession.

  130. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @FGB, thanks for explaining what you meant. Their relationship as an endless jazz piece. The only thing I may know of jazz is that there must be syncopation, hence the differences in the pauses/silences that adds the accents to the notes. Appropriately for the grand love story, it is the long separation/space between KS and ET that adds so much accent/poignancy to their love that transcends lives, space and time.

I mentioned my ‘errand’ above. I was at a wake yesterday and will be dropping by again today. Tomorrow, I will be going for the funeral Mass and maybe even for the cremation. We live, knowing that we are in the circle of life, in which death is not the end.

  131. My condolences from this side of the world, @GB. A family member gone is a part of your memories that gets frozen in time, never able to add new stories but whose presence gets clearer with our love and deeper understanding. I know this is probably not the first thing to come to mind, but it is also a good opportunity to rekindle distant bonds with people that has drifted away.

When we are young our reunions are birthdays but as we grow older our reunions starts to come first with weddings then as funerals. As you said, this is the cycle of life, and life in all of its forms is still an gift.

    Please celebrate life.

Hope you are OK. I will be praying for you and your family.

  132. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks @FGB Yes, the thought came to me and that’s why I made another visit today, because more relatives, long unmet, would be there. It was a good gathering. πŸ™‚

  133. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

You know each time I refresh this page and see that gif above, I watch the reactions of all the audience seated around Gong Yoo as he threw his popcorn (first snow!) in the movie theatre and I can’t help chuckling, then I look at GY and KGE and just burst out laughing again.

  134. @GB, I’m sorry your extended family has lost someone dear to their hearts. May shared memories of good times help everyone get through this time of sorrow.

  135. One of the things that stands out to me in rewatching Goblin is that Gong Yoo is good at physical humor. He’s a versatile actor. He’s beloved for his broody stares, and menacing when waging war and wreaking vengeance, but can also be endearing as tipsy Goblin, pitiful when laying in bed in the fetal position, crazed when recalling his drunken behavior, huffy with DH’s presumptuousness, etc. Yes, there are times I can’t overlook the gleam of amusement in GY’s eye even as his character is supposed to be in turmoil, but I’ll give him a pass because I’m glad he’s having so much fun playing this role.

Another thing that stands out is that when his guard is down, such as when Goblin is drunk / happy to be in ET’s presence, he’s playful. The little boy hidden deep within gets to come to the surface when tipsy Goblin, stumbling and skipping next to ET, spins around poles they encounter. Goblin flicks water onto ET’s face and smugly participates in the water fight he started by magically dodging ET’s efforts to retaliate. Sometimes when he’s with ET, he’s just a big kid. That must feel so refreshing for him.

Goblin and Reaper also act like overgrown children when they’re together, but their dynamic is different than Goblin with ET. Goblin and Reaper engage in showboating, trying to establish dominance. They may settle into a truce, even feeling begrudging respect for one another, but still angle for the alpha position in the pack.

  136. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thank you @Welmaris. My comment to you seems to not have been posted. I thought I’d clicked ‘Post Comment’ this morning!!!

I was saying how GY’s evident enjoyment of this role, makes watching him so much more fun, and how despite knowing the ending, I can watch with great satisfaction, all his antics, his pettiness and also the weighty emotional scenes. It’s already such a pleasure rewatching Goblin for the goblin alone, that having along also the wonderful ensemble, it’s such a bonus. πŸ™‚

  137. @Growing Beautifully, I will be getting my booster at the same time as the rewatch on the 20th, so I must wait to comment. I hope that everyone on this thread is well and thriving.

  138. @Packmule3, if your schedule allows, please open a new thread for tomorrow’s rewatch of Goblin Episode 5. Thanks!

  139. Thanks for the reminder, @Welmaris. πŸ™‚
