Thanks @pkml3. I hope to be able to catch tonight’s episode, even without subs. πŸ˜‰

  2. Thank you for all of this morning’s updates, @packmule3.

I hope that you and yours are well and in good readiness for Christmas. Do you know that Hank Williams song, “Hey Good Lookin'”? Just because I’m a curious cook and love that cowboy swing.

“Say hey, good lookin’, what you got cookin’?
How’s about cookin’ somethin’ up with me?
Hey, sweet baby, don’t you think maybe
We could find us a brand new recipe?” (this Christmas)

  3. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

What an exciting, explosive episode (I fast forwarded the suspenseful parts) and a sweet end. Now to watch the subbed version with a happy heart.

  4. I am so thrilled at the moment! It is getting better and better! I didn’t expect that when we first started watching “The Red Sleeve Cuff”!

I am impressed by the director. We got some mirroring scenes that made the suspence overwhelming! Bravo to the lady director!

@GB Unnie, the episode was so explosive! I watched it with curious eyes!
I am pretty elated at some parts! The plot is thickening and Yi San is very good in strategy!

The end is sweet indeed and hopefully you know what will happen at one point. Ahem… *winks* LMAO!

  5. What a happening episode!!! Went through soamy emotions watching it. Now need to re-watch it. @Cleopatra is right- the dorector’s editing is great..seamless transition from dramatic scenes to action to back yo romance again. Perfect! I’m more and more impressed with Junho’s acting, and now Lee Se Young has grown on me too. This may be one of my favorite dramas this year πŸ˜‡

  6. I agree this episode is amazing in so many levels. That running towards each other by the end was a swoon fest 😍😍 but my favorite part was when San caught Deokim sleeping in his bed! I like the way he wanted to touch her face but didn’t; the way his eyes stared at her like she’s the most precious thing he’d ever seen. And then he said “Aren’t you scared of me? Do you know what could happen? You are so bold.” I can feel San’s heart going to burst with so much love for her.
And him putting down the paper symbolizes how he can rest his worries away when he’s with her. What a sweet and tender moment!. How Junho conveyed all that emotions seamlessly is impressive, it’s blowing me away.πŸ˜… He’s a natural. And the music!! the music made all the difference!

This drama is literally all I’m living for these days πŸ₯°

  7. Daebak, just love the story.

  8. Love love the story, daebak.

  9. This drama is just getting better and better. Like @GB, I speed watched, skipped over a many parts to the beautiful end of the episode.
I found her speaking to Yisan a bit too energetic for an exhausted her. Yet I wonder if it is because it is a deliberate appropriate presentation of herself, or because she is so excited that adrenaline takes over before she crashes.

@Lei I loved that scene too! So much emotions and holding back and you can such strong restraint in his hands. It is such a beautiful scene. 😍

  10. @grace or maybe both! Either way,
I loved it, how she tries brushed off what she did like it was not a big deal. I can’t wait for the time where she can be completely honest with her feelings for him.
I know quite a number of viewers wants them to kiss already but I find San craddling Deokim is more affectionate than any kiss can convey. and that single tear that fell on his face 😭 what he also said in this scene reminds me of Jeonjo’s epitaph to Uibin.
Junho did carried his emotions so well in this episode.
And that scene in his bed reminds me so much of that look of endless love Junho gives to his beloved cat, in one episode of “I live alone” there was a time where he stares at one of his cat like that. πŸ˜…

  11. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@grace @lei everyone, what an episode. Devastating in the way that it makes one fear other episodes will pale by comparison. I agree with the comments on the tension, the emotions, the editing, the score and how well it all worked together to bring on the emotional highs and the cathartic reunion.

How sweetly San’s face changed from serious to curious to tender when he saw DI sleeping like a baby. It’s even more appealing that he who longs to be close to her, restrains himself from touching her. I love the way he put the paper down gently so as not to wake her.

And of course that end with DI in his arms and his tears falling on her face, was one of the sweetest.

I must say that the women assassins were no pushovers. They were almost as strong as the men and held their own amazingly. We are to conjecture that these were girls who were forcibly taken from villages, to form an unexpected fighting force for the secret Gwanghan Palace organisation? They must have been trained to fight for years.

I like that Show allows both San and DI to give and receive from each other. They serve and protect the other in their own ways.

Applause for Jun Ho, who was amazing.

  12. Yes too all you have described @GB πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ’• i am just so enjoying this series and being able to chat and read everyone’s thoughts on it.
Thank you @pm3 for opening this thread too 🍷πŸͺ are you watching it too?

  13. Agree with everyone here about how emotional that scene was when the Crown Prince found Deok Im sleeping in his bedroom. Junho’s acting here was exemplary and so was the direction. That scene had so many feels! I literally went back to rewatch that thrice😍
Also the last scene where she is too exhausted to hide her true feelings, it is so tender. I agree that Yi San cradling Deok Im here is more romantic than a kiss will be.
I think Yi San knows that she is lying about her feelings in the earlier scene in the garden where she denied that their childhood encounter held any significance to her, he was shaking his head as if he meant..I don’t believe you are denying having any feelings for me when it is so apparent. Her eyes were expressing her love even while she denied it.

  14. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!

This is my drama for the year! For the ‘feels’, emotions and heart fluttering scenes between Deok Im and Crown Prince Sana.

This is the first time that my heart was beating so fast with just a scene of him looking at her so tenderly while she’s sleeping. That shaping of her face with his hand but not touching it. Those tears at the end from him. Oh be still my beating heart!

I just died! Oh wait I have to watch it again! hahahah

Girlfriend @Phoenix, I’ll meet you in drama heaven. LOL!

My new crush is Jun Ho! He’s just perfect here. I can watch him as Crown Prince Sana anytime.

  15. Hey everyone! Agree! Agree! I love that scene too when he wanted to but didn’t touch her face. Despite being the crown prince, he respects her. Carefully outlining her face instead. When San said the lines, it kind of half telling off, half amused and finished with a smile. It gives me the feeling she is so close and yet so far. So much uncertainty and tenderness from him. Brilliantly act! The scene has a soft warm glow. Very pretty to look it.

This drama is no so light hearted any more. Who is the princess that joined the fairy gang?

I am quite worried that head guard will be killed off sometime. The drinking wine request seems a like build up that he will at some stage.

  16. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    @Viva, @agdr03, @Phoenix, @grace
You know this scene we all love about him respecting DI and letting her sleep without touching her… and how he said: “Are you not frightened of me? Frightened of what I would do to you? You are quite bold.”

This was a lovely counterpoint to how he had been jealous and angry in the library at the end of Episode 7 and into Episode 8.

San stands before DI in the library : “I thought that I knew you. But for the first time ever, it occurred to me that I might not know you at all. Tell me. Do you belong to me?”
DI : “Of course, Your Highness. I’ve taken an oath to serve and protect you forever.”
San : “Then does your everything belong to me? Your thoughts, your will, and your heart, do they belong to me? Answer me!”
DI : “That isn’t so, my lord. Even a court lady has her own will and heart, even though they may seem trivial to others. Even though I belong to you, my everything does not belong to you.
    San : “What nonsense.”

He walks towards her and she backs slowly into the bookshelves, looking apprehensive. He touches her face gently outlining the area behind her ear, but then grabs hold of her neck with one hand, that looks able to crush her windpipe.

San : “I alone decide your fate. Everything you own, belongs to me. … I decide whether you live or whether you die. Never forget that.”
He releases her, although he may have stroked her face with his thumb, and leaves in a huff.

DI practically collapses against the shelves.

So it’s good that in Ep 9 he made up for that jealous, boorish behaviour!

  17. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Episode 10 is too high is suspense. I FFDed but the ending is such cliff-hanger. We’ll be stuck waiting for a week to know what happens next.

I will have to re-watch slowly.

  18. @GB I know, and did you notice there was no preview at the end too this time?πŸ˜”πŸ˜”

  19. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Phoenix, yes, I noticed that there’s no preview. I sometimes expect no previews at the end of episodes in the second half of a series, because Show does not want to give spoilers. With a cliffhanger like that, I guess it’s understandable. I’m just gritting my teeth to wait. πŸ˜‰

  20. Kalispera!

Episode 10 continued our meander way to show us the palace’s politics.

I mean Han’s grandfather is so easily manipulated that he cannot even see that they tried to kill his grandson?

I can fathom who betrayed San feels.

Also, San really knows who really is in his side or not.
Hong Deok Ro crossed the line when he told San-ah about Deok Im-Ah and how to take her out his system, i.e. to use her sexually then let her go.

Deok Rok hasn’t realized yet, that San truly loves her because since the very first day Deok Im has stay true to her words. Hence their difference.

Deok Rok doesn’t truly trust San.

As for the last scene and another attempt to frame San.
I do hope that San won’t be burned by his grandfather and the devious plot of Head Court Lady Jo & Princess Hwa Wan will come out eventually.

    Let us see..

  21. Greetings Chingus,

Joining in late to watch this show. Caught up with all the episodes and all the comments.

There was a preview for the next episode – ep 11 on twitter.

    https://twitter.com/mbcdrama_pre/status/1469670807190183939

catch up with you all on the next episode.

  22. @GB, I felt San is showing us all different types of refrain, the bad ones and the good ones. Junho does a good job and Lee Se Young is very effective in making it convincing why she is worthy. After saving San all she asked is just a spyglass/telescope. That’s all she wanted! She used it to look at San’s face closely from a distance.

I felt this is like an analogy. DI is working how to love San from a far. She seems to taking the ideas from her friend that she can admire the person she loves from a far in ep 9.

One thing I like about Maggie (DI’s friend, Maggie from Reply 1988) is she has a plan for life after the palace. She will be independent and buy a big house. Unlikely to happen back then? But still good to see that idea. lol

Another nice scene in ep 10 is DI’s turn of touching the unreachable Prince. Has she ever reached out to San so far? Does she only do that in her dream?

@Cleo, poor San. The story line is not so light hearted anymore now we see a lot more plotting. He does nothing wrong but got framed just like that! We probably will get to see more of DI’s way to save San again.

HDR always underestimates the court ladies. Look at court lady Jo – she can push the princess out. She knows the weakness of the king and influences in her way. Hopefully we will get to see how DI deal with her, in the court lady way. That will teach HDR a lesson! I suspect he will never learn though.

So far, I felt San is never that sure because DI never confessed his feelings. He can only work by DI’s feelings deducing. He is always a little insecure until he heard it from DI I think.

    Thanks @angelwingssf!

  23. Poor San. No matter what he does, Grandpa is not happy. The ninja court ladies were over the top. It is difficult to believe that they have a secret compound on the palace grounds, complete with a dungeon and a torture chamber. But who cares about logic when my latest crush Jun Ho looks super cool while shooting arrows. By the way, is he left-handed?

  24. @SnowFlower apparently he is. And he learnt how to use chopsticks and write with his right hand just for the show? He’s fastidious like that.

    https://www.soompi.com/article/1470549wpp/2pms-junho-shares-his-strict-daily-routine-talks-about-friendship-with-got7s-jinyoung

  25. Also has anyone notice San’s look of terror at the last scene? His expression perfectly depicts the dread and fear of a young child knowing how frightening what’s to come ahead of him and praying with all his heart that he won’t get it this time. How does Junho do it? And he had literally no one on his side, Deok Im is probably the only one he got at this point, no wonder he craves so much of her affection.

  26. Can’t add much to these comments so will repeat just how moving the whole episode with D’s role with the signal kite was.

Ironic that she decided to learn the signal kites’ meanings to deflect from San’s attention to her and expressions of intent/questions about what their relationship is to be in his private garden. San knew her to be the loyal support he needs and a woman of ability. Very moving.

Sadly after the expression of loyalty shown by Deok Ro in ep 9 – despite his other failures – he still misses the mark when it comes to the relationship he finds most threatening that of the CP and Di. I can see this developing into a big decision for San and a crisis at some point.

Of course I loved the sleeping in the CP’s bed scene – and the way she woke up stretching happily, refreshed from sleep …only for the penny to drop! She has something of Julie Andrews in the Sound of Music about her!

San’s guard was wonderful in Ep 9 and 10. So funny too when he assumed he had allowed Di to get into CP’s Royal room because he had dropped off. He is a funny combination of a bit dopey and being an amazing warrior ‘I can make anything I hold into a weapon’.

  27. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi dear happy watchers of TRSC (Red Sleeve for short or for long!)
    @Cleo, @agdr03, @ grace, @Phoenix, @Viva, @Lei, @angelwingssf, @Snow Flower, @Kate

I feel so sad for San. It’s too ironic that in both the times when it’s San who’s in danger (Tiger hunt and Ep 9’s high treason) instead of recognising that San needs more protection, the king’s thoughts are twisted to consider mostly himself as if his authority is at risk. It’s probably because he’s such an insecure king, because that society (as many others are too) looks at a person’s background as if it proves validity of or ability to rule. King was suspected of poisoning his brother to get the throne, as well, so marinated crab and raw persimmon are a sign of indictment against him.

Still, I felt that the Queen’s point of view was possibly valid. Perhaps San’s quarters was moved to be nearer the king to protect him as well as to keep an eye on him.

Thanks for the preview, @angelwingssf. It looks fraught and I’ll be on tenterhooks watching the next episodes.

@Viva, that’s a nice analogy. DI is extremely humble. Despite being close to San, she does not want to get special favours or attention. In the end, she’s prepared to watch him from a distance. In the same way, she does not do anything inappropriate. Instead of reaching him through touch, she uses her voice to read to him, and she runs to him (we see this twice). However, in the future, she may reach him through touch as well, as the situation calls for it.

She is wise in not committing herself in words about her feelings towards San. As DR and possibly others know, now is not the time to be in headyCloud 9 ie distracted by romance which will reveal that DI can be his weakness. San needs to be focused on getting out of the traps that his enemies set for him.

While I deplore what DR said to San about bedding DI to get her out of his system, it’s the kind of advice that is ‘normal’ when it comes to hot, young love, and it’s more often given by oldies to youngsters. DR is of course determined that San should ascend the throne successfully so that he can ride on San’s coattails. As long as it suits him, DR will continue to help San, even in giving unwanted advice LOL.

@Snow Flower I was wondering how the ladies could all disappear from the palace and gather without being seen. I thought it was pretty crazy too, especially right under the nose of the king and court, however when they called themselves a secret organisation, like a secret society, it sounded possible. With much bribery, threats, blackmail etc, it might be possible in the very large compounds of several palaces to build secret passageways and underground rooms. The royalty themselves probably would never step into the grounds of the servants’ quarters.

@nrllee Thanks for the link to the article. Now I’m thinking I want to watch ‘Home Alone’. Both Jun Ho and Jin Young in it at the same time is a happy year end present! I did hear of another actor, Kim Soo Hyun who is also a lefty who learnt to use his right hand for My Love From the Star. He’s another young man (there are many) I admire for hard work and dedication for his craft.

@Lei, yes poor San looked terrified of the explosion that was going to erupt in the next few seconds. One thing that bothers me is that the king himself must know how easy it is for things to be tampered with. The food goes through so many hands before it finally reaches the table. How is one to be sure who made the food or if the food was switched or not. I never feel accusations should be made so easily, but the normal drama way is to accuse first and get the good guy to suffer LOL. To avoid any such difficulty, each person should have written out a menu of what they’d serve, way in advance.

@Kate, yes DI meant to deflect attention from her to the kites, but she did seriously study the message of each kite. In the end the first thing she said to San was ‘Did you see the signal kite that I flew?’ LOL she wanted him to know it was her and to know if she’d protected him or not. So in the end instead of deflecting, she was demanding his attention and acknowledgement.

Yeah, poor Bodyguard Kang. He’s so used to be called ‘dull’ that he’s willing to think he zoned out without knowing someone had passed him by. He’s going to be super alert from now on!

  28. I love the way San is being played. He is so tense. As he would be; living with his past, the abuse, and ever present danger to his person. It makes the tenderness he shows to Doek Im as a risk he is compelled to take. There are messages of precognition: she says that she will learn about the kites to protect him and then by chance/fate she uses the kite to protect him. San uses the words that she dreamed moments ago when she is in the library dozing. I am wondering how the power of women’s intuition is going to play out here. The spyglass, what a wonderful metaphor that is. Good script, good directing, good acting; the trifecta! When San’s phony friend, Hong Deo-ro says “just have your way with her. Then you will be able to clear your mind. It happens to all of us” you realize this guy is capable of rape on a regular basis. Then San says “Never speak to me of her again. That is an order.” I loved it. San has moved from the scary guy (in the library when he had his hand on Doek Im throat) to a guy who is repulsed by this worm. Not that San is not capable of snap judgement violence, he learned that from Grandpa. San is edgy and becoming becoming more complex by the minute. Lee Jung ho’s is throwing down a great performance. I too had low expectations but now I am all in.

  29. Welcome to the blog, @Bonnie Myhre.

I’m glad you’re enjoying the show.

  30. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Here’s a fun OTP BTS of Episode 10. They are so much fun and have so much together, I was smiling throughout. Have a laugh!

  31. I am so glad to watch an ongoing show because it is interesting to read information gradually come out so I am not hit by so much content πŸ˜› I keep discovering new things as I discover various people talk about it.

I am loving the mirroring in this drama, some people on twitter pointed it out and some I will raise here. I have not rewatched the drama in detail yet so I have not caught that much yet…but here are some

    1. Reading – Yisan ordered DeokIm not to read folk tales to the court ladies during the festival (was he thinking that it is frivolous?) and even made her do night duty so she cannot read. Later on because of the safety of the court ladies, he dragged her out of the library to read to the court ladies at the festival.
DeokIm read to him when he was ‘locked up’ in his room, he encouraged her to read.

    2. Tears – Yisan’s tears after he was scolded by his grandpa and when she pledged loyalty to him. His tears was clearly shown. DeokIm’s tears when she dreamt of him and missed him. Her tears was also clearly shown and later on he wiped those tears away. Remember when they were children, she also wiped his tears when he was crying because of his grandmother’s death?

    3. Running towards – Yisan running towards DeokIm to catch her as she falls in exhaustion. Actually at the same time DeokIm was running towards him but I realize there are many times DeokIm is running to find Yisan and there were 2 incidents where he caught her – their first meeting (she slipped and fell into his arms accidentally) and at the end episode 9.

I’m sure there are more but these were the incidents that stood out for me the most.

  32. @GB i love all their interactions, they seem to have a lot of fun and I think in one bts, they talked about asking the bts team to film the director laughing for more than a minute. I am getting curious about this director, she reminded me of the Vincenzo director where she laughed a lot in the bts.

I went to also find out more about Lee Se Young and it seems like she is quite a ‘mood maker’ as they say, on the sets. Her bts with Yoo Seung Ho on the Memorist was filled with a lot of laughter. (They knew each other well and acted together as kids)

  33. @Lei – yes that subtle horror look. Poor San.

Thanks @GB! I also found some other BTS with Eng subs here too. It’s always interesting watching BTS. It may be a few minutes for us to watch the scenes, but it takes them a long day to get there.

    https://youtu.be/7Evtxygamzg

  34. @Grace I love you mirror scenes about reading. I guess it goes to show that even if technically Yi San has the control over her, she’s also not feeble minded and no pushover. I admire Duk Im’s self awareness and sense of agency. I also love their interaction in the library where San did some sort of “revenge” gesture by squeezing her face πŸ˜‚

I’ve read few comments questioning why DukIm fell asleep after running in Ep.9 but that scene ties in with the incident (forgot which episode) where the young child Dukim was running and then collapsed right in the hands of Court lady Seo. She always collapsed when she’s exhausted.

@Viva, @GB Yes, poor San. I can’t unsee Junho’s terrified look of a traumatised child. Poor guy can’t even take a break from all the scheming machinations in the palace.

  35. @Lei – The child DukIm collapsed into Lady Seo was when she had gone out to take a bathroom break and overheard court ladies talking about kicking San out because he was caught reading a restricted book. She grabbed the book from the library and hid behind the screens. When the eunuchs started searching the library because of the book, she could not get out of the library and did not sleep for the entire night. She found the pages in the book and tore the pages and handed it to DR who then handed it to the enunch and she could only come out after they had left.

DR took credit for tearing out the pages while it was actually DI ‘s quick thinking that saved San.

  36. @Cleopatra, yayyyy!! Christmas present??? HAii…we can’t sleep on boxing day..I will be unboxing Red Sleeve.

@Viva, Looking at the action scene it looks pretty amazing. So much work that went behind it. And it must have been really incredible to be on a set like that. All the effort, from the cameraman, stylists, trainers, stunt persons etc, all really paid off, that fight scene was really heart racing and exciting. I felt it was not just fighting, there were good story progression in the midst of it. Not one boring moment.

I follow her blog for the subs. And I love the mood in the bts, also enjoying all the interactions between the cast and always laughing staff & director.

  37. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Cleo Thank you for the good news! It’s going to be an extra nice Christmas!!

@grace Thank you for the link to jlml’s blog. That was hilarious. I can tell I’ll be spending more time trawling her blog for all Jun Ho stuff. πŸ™‚

  38. Thank you @angelwingssf! I also wonder if YiSan will ever know the truth about that incident.

@Grace I also follow her IG for the comparison and spoilers from the novel. πŸ˜‰ https://instagram.com/jlml718?utm_medium=copy_link

  39. @Grace @Lei, thanks for the links! Wow there is so much to read! The BTS clips are funny to watch and now with the subtitles it’s even better. πŸ™‚ Articles and interviews too. I have to be selective to avoid spoilers but still accidentally read something from the press conference lol. It’s also interesting to see how careful they implemented the COVID restrictions.

With the extended episodes aired on Christmas day, I wonder if they will throw us something happy. The finale will then be aired on 1 Jan. I wonder if the timing will influence the ending? I am quite prepared for something sad but do I need to cry on 1 Jan?

  40. You are welcome @grace, @GB Unnie πŸ™‚

I am glad you enjoyed the news!
