2D1N: Ep 115 Mini-Review

I’ve to keep reviewing this so I won’t forget what I watched.

I kept a tally of the number of games the Young Boys (YB) team lost and won because it seems like the “Young Blood” lost often. But I think the guys held their own against the Old Boys (OB) team. On this trip, the YB won two matches (dinner game and departure game), and OB won three (the lunch game, activities game, and the indoor/outdoor sleeping arrangement). But the games that the YB lost were closely contested games. They weren’t blowouts; the OB didn’t win by a large margin.

For instance, I think they lost the lunch game in Ep 113 because the OB, in particular JongMin, were giving clues to the botanic garden horticulturist. Ravi and Dindin were disheartened after the game, and Dindin worried they would lose the dinner game, too, since their energy would be depleted by then. But Inwoo offered to share his energy.

Inwoo: I’ll give you my energy.
Dindin: We won’t even have the energy to draw.
Inwoo: It’s okay. We can do it.
Dindin: I think I’m too young to embrace you.

This must be an idiomatic expression because I don’t get the context.

Inwoo: (putting his hand on his back and arm) It’s okay. We can grow up together.

Inwoo’s encouragement became the closing tagline for that episode. The YB would grow up together in the show.

The older guys thought InWoo was a character.

This Episode 115 continued with the dinner game. The objective of the game was to memorize a ridiculously long song with a rap (or non-singing) component as well as a singing component. The first team to memorize the song got to eat sumptuous dinner of  oysters.

The YB team won largely because they didn’t have Jongmin on their team. Jongmin couldn’t memorize a poem to save his life. It’s a running joke in 2D1N that Jongmin isn’t very bright because he fell from the rooftop when he was a kid.

So Seyoon, the chubby guy, teased Inwoo whether he too had ever fallen from a high place too as a kid because Inwoo was the weakest link on the YB team.

Jongmin: Have you? I fell from a rooftop.
Inwoo: Hyung, I was playing on a fireman’s pole and fell headfirst like this. (bowed his head)
Jongmin: No way. Are you serious?

Inwoo is truly the reincarnation of Ondal, the foolish character he played in “River Where the Moon Rises.”

It was also a good thing that the YB team had Ravi. Ravi is the “king of memorization.” I guess as a rap singer, he had to have a good memory.

It was funny when Ravi showed off of his excellent memory. While Inwoo and Dindin struggled to memorize the non-singing lines, he already memorized the rest of the lyrics.

See here? Dindin hadn’t memorize that part yet so Ravi sang for him.

Same with Inwoo. Ravi sang his part, too.

The words on top of Inwoo’s and Dindin’s heads said “Hole 1” and “Hole 2.” respectively.

(Yes, @nrllee. Both Ravi and Dindin were wearing arm sleeves to cover their tattoos. My sons wore those compression ones for basketball to keep muscles warm.)

Thanks to Ravi — and of course, the efforts of the other two — Team YB went on to win the game and they had the oyster dinner. (I thought it was overkill.)

I think this dish is the best one because it has beef.

But I really shouldn’t complain about the oyster dinner. Team OB’s dinner menu was a lot worse. They were served a full course meal of tangerines.

It was a play on words. Oysters in Korean is “gul” while tangerine is “gyul.”

For the Indoor/Outdoor Sleeping Game, the OB won the Bingo contest. The YB’s new name is now Do-Re-Mi because of their height. They look like a musical scale. lol.

To me, the highlight of this segment was Inwoo’s snoring. He again disturbed Ravi’s sleep with his loud snoring. (Shouldn’t he be checked for sleep apnea?)

He looks ugly when he sleeps. #truth

To compensate, however, he looked as cute as button when he woke up. He was the first one awake and out of the tent the following morning. Even though he was still groggy, he didn’t forget to bow to the production team who was already filming the show.

I guess, he woke up early to go to the bathroom, and wake up the OB in the bedroom.

Then as soon as the morning music played, he ran back down to the ten and woke up Dindin and Ravi. He alone looked peppy dancing to the morning music. All the hyungs still looked dazed.

I guess he was the accidental “Morning Angel” that day.

In previous years, the staff would invite a guest (usually a female actress or a kpop singer, I know, it’s sexist!) to wake up the members bright and early in the morning. The guest is called the “Morning Angel.” Park Shin Hye and Suzy were previous morning angels.

The last game of the show was the Going Home game. This is actually the most anticipated game because everybody wants to go home after a tiring day. The winning team gets to leave immediately after the game, while the losing team has to do some chores. In this episode, the losing team is tasked to gut 3 kilograms (or 6 lbs) of anchovies. (lol. I didn’t even know that anchovies had their  guts removed!)

The objective of the game is to warm up one of the team member’s back. The team that gets the temperature higher wins.

Inwoo was chosen for the YB team, but JongMin had to be persuaded to be the OB representative.

As soon as the signal was given, the YB rushed to the sauna to get Inwoo’s back heated up. They were surprised when the OB team didn’t follow them. Inwoo couldn’t believe that they were actually going to hit Jongmin’s back to heat it up, instead of using the sauna. According to Seyoon, slapping something hard raises its temperature. (I think it’s an old wives’ tale.)

The YB won, obviously. And I felt sorry for Jongmin. He got slapped hard multiple times in vain.

Overall, it was fun watch. I’m glad to see that the new member In Woo is settling right in.

It’s also interesting how the two hyungs, Ravi and Dindin, naturally acted like Inwoo’s parents. Ravi took on the “motherly” role. He gave him advice and told him what to expect while filming. Dindin, on the other hand, wanted to win their games because their meals and sleeping arrangements were on the line. In this sense, he wants to “provide” for his team like a father.

We’ll see how it goes next week when Inwoo teams up with JongMin. The teaser for next episode said that this couple was the “John” couple. Inwoo’s English name is John Na.

Note: The name “John Na” sounds like a curse word in Korean, “jonna.” From what I gather, the word is used as an intensifier, like the word “helluva” (or “hell of a”). In English, we say “helluva” to stress something. For example, “she’s a helluva singer,” means she’s a very, very good singer.

“Jonna” is the cruder version of “helluva.” I think it’s similar to “fucking.” Thus, “jonna ippeuda” means “fucking pretty.” It should be funny to see the show attempt to make fun of In Woo’s English name.

That’s it for me. I don’t have much to complain — Oh, wait! I do have something to be bitch about: the Viki’s show’s banner. It still shows the annoying “Good Boy.” When will the Viki moderator change that group photo? That “Fake Guy” has been gone a long time (Good riddance, I say!). And it’s time for a new group picture with Na InWoo to replace it.

So that’s it. My mini-report of last Sunday’s 2D1N, @nrllee and @Fern.

  1. OG to YG – ‘Have you ever seen a rotten hyena?’😆

  2. Jong-min won the anchovy weighing contest among the OBs, but the other two randomly decided that they should re-do the game to have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd order. He agreed with it, but then lost and the other two abandoned him to finish gutting anchovies all alone. Is his heart bigger than his mind? The other two came back to tease and prank him, which was entertaining but a bit harsh.

The producing director Dong Hyun (who wanted it to finish) kindly agreed to help, but by then Jong-min was wiser and challenged him to a weighing contest. Jong-min won and felt vindicated.

I haven’t seen most of these men before, but the OBs certainly know how to be entertaining.

  3. Thanks for the mini recap @packmule3. I agree. This ep was a fun watch. I think IW is a good fit to the gang. I really like Ravi. 😂. I hope he doesn’t disappoint me like JJY did in S3 😢. And I agree that IW is exactly like OnDal 😂. He doesn’t even have to try. I also agree that he should be checked for sleep apnoea. That snoring is bad. As the Maknae I think it’s a given that he should be the first to rise and wake the others? It’s one of those hierarchical things. Each member has their own production team? Because it looked like when the member gets to knock off work, their designated production team gets to go too? 😂. That tic face toe game with the beanies was a hoot. I don’t know why YB failed in the real game when they did so well in the trial.

  4. 😂 Ravi was the maknae before. He didn’t wake up the older guys.

Yes. Each member has his own camera guy. And there’s one head director and one or two assistant directors. The assistant directors are in charge of the other groups when the members have to split up in two or three teams. The head director (PD Bang) and head writer will accompany the group which will provide the high-value content or the most laughs.

For instance, in the next episode, the cast members are split into three teams.

    Ravi and JongHoon
    Din din and Seyoon
    In woo and Jongmin

I’m predicting that PD Bang and the head writer will go with Inwoo and Jongmin.

If you notice in S3, the PD went where Kim JunHo went.

I think OB learned to play down during the practice runs to lull the YB into complacency. Didn’t they do in the Winter Training when they had to carry Seyoon on a pole? 😂😂

Yes, the tic-tac-toe game was a riot. Ravi tried to cheat!!

I’m glad that IW blended in with the group in no time.

I remember Mr Dimples didn’t interact well with Ravi, Dindin and JongHoon in the beginning. The fans excused it as he was a variety show rookie and naturally reserved and shy. 🤪 I thought it was a lame excuse because he auditioned for the job.

I think Ravi set up his own recording (or label??) company. So if he messes up like JJY, the other artists in his agency will be affected, too. He has a big responsibility to do well because of his role as CEO.

But we shall see . There’s many a slip between cup and lip. 🙂

Yes, when the member ends filming early, his crew gets to leave early too.

Not only his cameraman, but also his manager, stylist, and assistant. In Season 3, Junho’s and Jongmin’s staff worked long hours because they often lost.

  5. Dong Hyun may be a newbie director if he was tricked by JongMin to gut the rest of the anchovies. JM might not be booksmart but he’s wily. And he’s been on the show the longest so he knows the ins and outs.

JongHoon had a hit drama: Vampire Prosecutor. It had 2 seasons.

Moon Seyoon. He has another variety show. An eating show.

  6. Thank you for explaining the OBs, @packmule. It looked as though in earlier episodes, Dong Hyun was quite intrepid and sometimes went through as much as the contestants. I felt a bit* sorry for him for trying to help out so everyone could go home, only to be left as the last man standing/gutting. *A bit – he let himself in for it, right? 😉

  7. Gutting the anchovies always reminds me of HP when the men had to gut them for Rosa. Then she made soup with the anchovies and to their horror they found a bit floating in the soup. 😂.

I like Ravi. There’s a steadiness about him that I never saw in JJY. JJY always felt sleazy to me. I never fully trusted him. He always came across as the bad boy.

IW is just OnDal. Straight shooting and just all round nice guy (the real deal, not just pretend GoodBoy 🙄). I think he was actually genuinely offering the OBs some of his drink (which they won after the memory lyrics game) when he got splashed in the face by JH (who thought he was DinDin coming back to taunt them). Do you think he was trying to make JongMin feel better by telling him about how he fell on his head too coming down a fireman’s pole? That’s how it came across to me. 😂. I am looking forward to seeing the 2 of them pair up this weekend.

  8. O and one final comment about IW. He’s unaffected. He doesn’t seem to care about “his image”? Unlike someone he replaced.

  9. The splash 💦 incident was definitely not scripted. We heard the script writers gasping in surprise, too. Dindin was surprised.

Ahhhh! So that’s why Rosa’s old friend was surprised when the gut landed on him. Right? Did it land on him or was it just floating in the soup?

It’s like finding a fly in the soup?

JJY is wild and undisciplined. I think he was chosen because he defied stereotypes. He didn’t grow up in SK. He has no school records (or the school records were from other countries) so he wasn’t conscripted. Had he gone to the military, his self-indulgence would have been at least curbed.

But he was given free rein. I remember the trip to his family’s house in JeDo. His relationship with his parents struck me forced and unnatural. They could have been more enthusiastic to see each other since he admitted that he didn’t get to see them often.

Unlike the trip to Yoon Shi Yoon’s grandparents’ home. That was touching. There was real affection there. YSY is a good guy.

  10. And did you notice Na In Wii’s shoes? Dindin and Ravi were wearing stylish athletic shoes. But he was wearing *slip-on* chukkas. He wiggled his feet in them.

His stylist must have a meager budget. Or maybe he doesn’t have a stylist yet. I know Jongmin has a stylist. Ravi and Dindin have them too.

  11. @packmule3, I wondered if Na In Woo was without a stylist as well. His income may not extend to a number of staff quite yet – perhaps an agent who makes suggestions. I thought that he dressed appropriately for the show, with a hat and warm clothes. There’s no point in wearing nice clothes to go camping. I thought he was just in a hurry/lazy about putting his shoes on! He’s a funny one – it’s good that Ravi and Dindin are taking care of him. I suppose he will need a clever and patient wife when the time comes.

@nrllee, I thought the fireman’s pole was real. It’s the sort of thing that happens with climbing frames in play areas. I shouldn’t laugh, but his instant little mime of the incident was funny.

  12. @packmule3 no I didn’t notice his shoes. Now that you mentioned it, I am going to look 😂. Funny you should mention stylist because this article circulated about him when he was cast

    https://nbcnews.my.id/2022/01/26/na-in-woo-will-be-a-permanent-member-of-2-days-1-night-this-former-stylist-opens-his-voice-kpop-chart/?amp=1

He’s just a nice and considerate guy. 👍. Former stylist probably means he has one now? Don’t know. I am really interested in what he carries in his cross body bag. Maybe it is true that he doesn’t have an entourage so he has to carry all his personal stuff with him eg his phone, wallet etc.
