2D1N: Ep 123 Open Thread

Awwww, did the 2D1N guys attend Ravi’s recent concert? I see Na Inwoo, Dindin, Moon Seyong, and Kim Jongmin.  That’s sweet of them.

I’m looking forward to today’s show. They’ll pay Na Inwoo a surprise visit at his home. I hope he doesn’t have any incriminating pink toothbrush inside the bathroom because Dindin, the nosy one, will surely hassle him about it.

  1. What where when? Let me go find pics of the gang attending his concert. 😂

  2. 😂 they were bopping so hard. Great to see them supporting him.

  3. So they sprung a visit to NIW’s home? They did this with DongGu too when he first joined. Waiting for subs to watch it properly.

  4. Watched the ep. To be honest the only thing I found really interesting was the glimpse into the apartment of IW. I am missing the whole gang with Ravi – I feel it acutely. The apartment was spartan. He had few clothes. He had nothing on his computer that revealed any skeletons. I guess it shows that he’s really been living the hard life as an actor (he only gained recognition after Mr Queen). The only thing noteworthy was his collection of guitars. Of course one could argue that this was a set up and his manager made sure nothing incriminating was in clear view of the cameras. Or PD had edited all the unsavouries out of the clip. I would seriously doubt this. Because of the JJH incident, they had to make doubly sure there was going to be no repeat with future members. I found it interesting that there were no pictures of his family. It could be that he didn’t want pics of his family splashed across the internet. The good son-bad son theme for the games was okay. Like I said, I am missing Ravi 😢. I guess next week is Princess week. Where the boys dress up as Disney princesses. With the new PD on board now and running the show, I feel a distinct shift with the choice of games. Will have to see if it’s just this week or if it’s a trend.

  5. I gave the episode a try, @nrllee. I wanted to see how this new director would change the ambiance. A few comments…

    1. The house raid was a fail. I knew Dindin would look for signs of a girlfriend! I expected him to go to the bathroom and check the toothbrushes. But Dindin knew that Inwoo couldn’t have any GF if his apartment didn’t even a couch. Where would the girlfriend sit if Inwoo entertained her at his house?

I thought his bare room was sad. My sons’ college apartments had more stuff than Inwoo’s bachelor pad. But I bet the fans will start sending him stuff as soon as this episode airs.

What does this scene tell me about the new Director? Like you said, this had been done before. I don’t know about the Season 1 and Season 2, but they did this for Season 3, with the new cast.

If I remember correctly, the surprise wake-up call started with two members going to one person’s house, then the three of them joined forces to wake up the fourth member, then the four members woke up the fifth member, and finally, the five members woke up the last one, Kim Joo-hyuk (the one who passed away/the Reply 1988 adult Choi Taek).

IIRC, they sprayed DefCon’s face to wake him up, and Kim Joo-Hyuk was very displeased they were all in his apartment.

I also remember when they did this to Yoon Shi Yoon (Donggu).

So I see this as a sign that this new PD (program director) would go back to the “old” traditions. I’ve said before that PD Bang made 2D1N kinder and softer than the 2D1N seasons when PD Na and PD Yoo were there. I think this new PD would borrow ideas from those two seasons which I consider the heyday of 2D1N.

    2. Dindin’s candy sense

I know Seyoon wanted to be more generous, but I’m totally in agreement with Dindin here. I would’ve bought the bag of candy too instead of splurging on the expensive drinks. It’s not the price of the giveaway that matters but the AEGYO they dole out when they hand out the freebies. Dindin is good with appealing to the mothers because of his reputation in Korean entertainment.

It was a pleasant surprise to see Lee Soon Jae. Isn’t he on “Again My Life”?

What does this segment tell me about the PD? I thought the “punishment” was a good reversal.

I didn’t get to see reversals — or plot twists — much from PD Bang. I remember the game when they allowed to order ramyeon with any toppings that they desired. Yeon JungHoon ordered the plain one, while Dindin, Moon Seyoon and Kim JongMin ordered beef, mushroom and seafood. The plot twist? They ended up paying for their expensive lunch.

In this episode, I like the plot twist because Dindin didn’t see it coming. He didn’t know that they would have to use up the rest of the money they frugally saved. It was a teachable moment that aligned well with the Confucian ideal of filial piety. That is, Dindin should have been more generous with the elderly.

But to me, the problem with this segment is the “editing.” The PD could’ve built up and tweak the reversal so it would look funnier.

    3. Kim Jongmin

I love how he read the mind of the new PD!! The PD was offering them a chance to throw the die again, but Jongmin quickly read the situation and sensed that getting “one” was advantageous to them.

What does this tell me about the newbie PD?

An experienced PD would have been prepared for every eventuality. This PD (and the newbie writer) failed to anticipate a scenario when a low number is thrown. And if I were a PD, I wouldn’t have placed 1 as an option anyway.

I got the sense that the PD was QUICKLY advised by his scriptwriter to offer the team another chance. And that’s how JongMin figured out that getting 1 was NOT the desired outcome of the game. The number 1 was actually a disadvantage for the production staff AND an advantage for them. That’s why JongMin quickly stepped in and said no deal.

That’s also why he said to Inwoo and JungHoo that the staff thought so little of their/his senses. He meant that after years of doing this, he’s got a pretty good “feel” when something wasn’t working out in the director’s favor.

    4. The water game

I think this is getting to be tiresome. Didn’t they have a water game too in their last trip? The screenwriter has to think up a new way to create games that have something to do with the theme and location of the show.

    5. Theme

I like how this PD introduced the theme of the show. I thought it was a return to the roots of 2D1N. The previous PD Bang didn’t not do this well, in my opinion. It was as if she chose the location for scenery, then just pasted the theme as an afterthought. That’s why the locations didn’t stick out in my head afterwards.

This theme of this Episode 123 reminded me of the time when the Season 3 cast members went to the only non-smoking place in South Korea. That episode made an impression on me because the whole trip was about NOT SMOKING, and all the members (except Cha Taehyun) were heavy smokers and chain smokers. They really struggled throughout the show. It was no joke.

In this Episode 123, the cast members were at a town called Gongju, whose claim to fame is that it’s the hometown of filial duty. I thought it was interesting, and the director set it up well.

However, the water game was soooo overused, and unimaginative. They could have done it at any other place.

So what does this tell me about this PD? He sure has the grand concept/great idea/lofty themes but he needs to work on the games. The games make the show hilarious.

But Episode 123 was his first run so let’s see how he improves.

  6. @packmule3 yeah I felt like the episode fell flat. I was sad too at the state of IW’s apartment (and the contents of his fridge). I wondered if it was because he had been struggling to make ends meet as an actor. He really didn’t get many roles till Mr Queen. The apartment was clean at least. Frankly I didn’t understand why they did it because it didn’t fit with the rest of the ep? I remember DongGu’s apartment raid. That one was a full raid and then they continued with the razing as they took him out and made him do stuff? Like a Buck’s Party episode. This one just felt like it was slotted in the beginning and then the whole ep went with the theme and it was all but forgotten?

I know what you mean about the “plot twist”. It felt like PD tried with the money spent for the elderly but it didn’t deliver? I didn’t laugh whilst they ate the food at all. And yes to not thinking far enough to deal with eventualities (The dice roll).

The editing was choppy. We didn’t get to see the other team and their money spent on food eating like DinDin and SY. Or did we? I can’t remember. The final race at the park was okay but again there were no defining moments.

  7. Ep124. I actually fast forwarded a lot of it. So that’s saying something. The 99second game just got really repetitive? And towards the end I did the same with the singing game. Pressed the ffwd button. It just wasn’t particularly entertaining or enlightening (aside from the statue that could be rotated). I feel like they need a guest to make up for the odd number. Ravi’s absence is really glaring.

  8. Ep125 I quite liked this ep for some reason. There were no silly games. The men in black was a novel addition. I didn’t hit the fast forward button. There were no laugh out loud moments but just interesting sites which I enjoyed. It was like a sightseeing tour. SokCho was featured as one of the places they visited. Yes, the SokCho in HP. 🙄. The island that JongMin visited was interesting. I noted a few spots that I may visit next time I go to South Korea.
