Thanks @pkml3. You’re really on the ball in getting the threads up this weekend!

We have a sort of ending to satisfy the ‘public’ and some nice couple scenes, but we start to enter the difficult portion of the plot, I believe. The baddie is going to get the upper hand and our good guys are going to suffer. Poor YJ.

  2. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I’ve just encountered a scary error message when trying to access the blog through email.

    “Request Header Fields Too Large
The server refused this request because the request header fields are too large.” – Is anyone else seeing this message?

  3. πŸ™ I don’t know what that means, @GB.

But to be on the safe side, I removed all the extraneous punctuation marks (like the colon and the @ sign) from my recent posts.

Sigh. I think this blogsite knows whenever I’m off work and have extra time to spare for the blog because it acts up like a kid wanting attention.

  4. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

LOL @pkml3, it’s a mysterious, sentient blog site!!! Well the good news is that I re-initialised my browser, clearing all the cached stuff and now it seems OK. Keeping my fingers crossed that it was only my browser acting up, since I use the email ‘Reply’ function a lot during our rewatch party.

  5. @Pm3… If your blog starts doing things that are not what you asked it to do… I would be you, I would start to worry… It starts like this and little by little… you realize that the blog is going to devour you… And no one will believe you of course. They’ll just say you drink too much whiskey!

    *** Imagination Montage ***

The first time I saw W, I didn’t understand that it was a daydream of Yeon Joo at first! And yet, the director put a blur effect on the edges of the picture. This passage is adorable, but unfortunately fake. We learn an important thing in it. Yeon Joo says that Kang Chul will be a traveler between worlds after the end of the manhwa. If she says this in her dream, it’s certainly because it’s an assumption she and Kang Chul have made in the meantime. And of course, the right assumption! An important revelation for the audience… hidden here.

    *** Cafe ***

The hilarious scene with Professor Park Min-Soo. The comedy fully exploits the situation and the high-concept (meta).

    *** Yeon Seo Hee ***
It’s very short, but I love the moment when Kang Chul spots Seo Hee in the real world. With the Goosebump effect of the BGM. The feeling that everything is going off the rails, that W hasn’t said its last word!!!

    *** Sung Moo + Yeon Joo ***
Again a complicated and scattered chronological set up. This meeting is staggered with many other scenes, so that we understand who did what. We suspect a little that Sung Moo is not Sung Moo but it is possible that some viewers did not see it coming. At the moment when Sung Moo reveals that he is the killer, the director applies a cold filter on the image! Watch the scene carefully.

*** Kang Chul is thinking! ***

He’s in the penthouse and thinking hard with his voice-over, very worried! Ahaha I love it. Kang Chul likes to use the words “context” and “variable”. Actually “variable” is a phenomenon from W that he couldn’t discover until now. A variable depending on the development of the manhwa story and the characters’ abilities. Now that he has developed his summoning ability… He can also summon people in the real world… Except that at first… he doesn’t know it!!! This balance in the summoning ability (in the manhwa or in the real world) is perhaps a result of the balance between the worlds, now that Kang Chul has accepted and discovered that there are two worlds of their own. Especially since the manhwa is able to influence both W’s world and the real world with its phenomena.

*** Yeon Joo taken to the slaughterhouse. ***
Often drama characters are heroic in the face of death, or allow themselves to be arrogant or proud. But here, Yeon Joo is the ordinary everyday woman, terrified. No heroism but pleading. This enhances the credibility by far. The part where the killer shoots her and she crawls on the floor… aah that hurts! The scene has that extra quality that you don’t find in many death scenes.

  6. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE good one!!! This blog may be starting to take on a life of its own, readying to eat us alive LOLOL. Maybe I should take up drinking whiskey in readiness? 😜 πŸ₯ƒ πŸ₯ƒ πŸ₯ƒ πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’« πŸ˜‡

The site is behaving well this morning, therefore I’m confident that it will be fine tonight for our Rewatch… that is… unless I disappear before then. 😱

    ===

Thanks for breaking down the episode for us. I did a very quick jump from here to there sort of check-and-watch to see what I recall of this episode. Yes, I felt the hair-raising sensation when KC sees SH in the real world. I don’t know if my hair stood on end or my heart dropped LOL.

It was scary-good that so late in the show, yet another new ‘rule’ of ‘W’ emerges. KC put his intelligence to good use. It becomes amazing meta that the rules of ‘W’ are more powerful than ‘normal’ reality, so much so that ‘W’ rules can be used to control how real characters will continue, survive, etc. What a powerful tool to use to re-write one’s life!!!

At the same time, it makes it clear that because we cannot turn everything we don’t like into a dream and re-write our history, we must be ever responsible for the history that we make now.

And how ironically rightly well balanced it will become that the one who was created turns out to be the one who saves instead of devouring his creator.

    Our Future Watch/Rewatch Parties
I’m putting up here a note from my conversation with @WE and with @Cleo about what we might do after the ‘W’ rewatch ends.

Personally, I enjoy our Saturday afternoons/evenings/nights together, and would like to continue to have a rewatch party, as long as @pkml3 continues to generously gives us a thread on her blog. (Thanks heaps @pkml3!!!)

So those of us who are like-minded, please let us know here what you’d like to watch/rewatch.

A note from @Cleo is that we take a one month hiatus and start again in August with a new show. I’m fine with this. It’s the summer break for many, and although I don’t have any summer, I could use the break.

For possible shows, @Cleo mentioned Black, which I unfortunately did not like and dropped. However I’m open to rewatching it if there are others who would like this show.

@WE has said that he does not know what to suggest and laughably mentioned an old show with his fave beauty in it. I don’t think he’s serious … but I’ll let him tell us about what comes to his mind, himself.

I’m thinking that since we like the complicated fantasy element, perhaps we might explore some of the other Song Jae Jung shows. Before ‘W’ there was Queen In Hyun’s Man and Nine: 9 Times Travel. Four years ago (already!!!) there was Memories of The Alhambra. Would anyone be interested to watch any of these?

  8. @GB, I’m deadly serious. It’s a great drama. And it’s free on youtube. πŸ™‚
I guess you didn’t watched it yet. πŸ˜‰
Else your proposal of other SJJ dramas: Of course they are nice, but wouldnt it better to change a bit?
A Park Hye Ryun? Other than Start-up. Or any great classic, iconic one, or important in kdrama history? I can’t make a full list here. It can be a drama I didn’t watched yet too (but I need to binge watch it first, hoping it’s a nice one).

  9. @GB, about Black, I prefer not, because in a interview, the screenwriter said the production destroyed her screenplay. It’s why I watched Iljimae, and I would prefer God Gift 14 days, or just rewatch Mouse.

  10. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, you were serious about Jang Ok Jung? It does not appeal to me because I seldom care for sageuks and 24 episodes of it.

I’ve got to go to the airport later. I hope to be back on time. If not, go ahead and start without me, of course.

  11. @GB I was encountering that message frequently when trying to access BoD in my Android phone via Chrome web service. I switched to Opera web service and have not had the problem since.

  12. I’m behind watching W by one episode, so I set my alarm for 5 a.m. to catch up…but of course, anticipating an early wakeup, I tossed and turned last night, unable to fall into a deep sleep. I have people coming at 9 a.m. today to work on the cabin, so think the best thing for me to do now is try to catch a couple more hours of sleep. Sorry I’ll be missing today’s party. And I will be busy all next weekend at a college alumnae association gathering, so won’t be joining you for Episode 14.

  13. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks for your note on the browser problem @Welmaris. I’ll keep that in mind.

Your post also reminded me that in 2 weeks time on a Saturday, I may not be able to be online at Party time, because I’ve to bring my daughter to the airport. Since it’s the midnight flight, leaving home before 10pm and staying on to see her off will definitely take up all of the party time. No harm though, I’ll do a before and after commenting. πŸ™‚

  14. Hello all. I should be on this morning. I might be ignoring my youngest son, who is visiting this weekend (but he should not mind – or seems not to!). See you all soon.

  15. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @salteddust, would you have any suggestions for a show for the next rewatch party?

  16. Dear @GB Unnie,

I think that it is better to start on September…

I am here but I am not feeling quite well at the moment so, I might only watch and not comment.

  17. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @Cleo, oh dear, what symptoms do you have?

Do you prefer a 2 month hiatus?

  18. Hi salteedust and welmaris!! GB you are back from the airport? you used a parachute?! I was about to propose Empress Ki, but it’s 51 episodes, lol!! (it needs 2 episodes a week at least). Intemporal masterpiece: Sandglass? (shorter 45min episodes). Or some other classics? I’m ok for < 2010 dramas. I think about something unique for rewatch, but probably I take that too seriously!! πŸ™‚ Like… 🧐🧐🧐

  19. Hi @GB. I am a relative newbie, but I will give it some thought. I am in the middle of Black which I only watch if it is not too late at night as it is so dark and am also in the middle of watching Queen In Hyun’s Man (which shows up as Queen and I on the YouTube where I am watching it). I had not realized the latter was scripted by the same person as W. I had also started Memories of the Alhambra (on my first attempt to find other kdramas staring Hyun Bin), but was put off immediately by the gaming; it was too much like watching my sons on their favorite multiplayer games. But I would be willing to try again. The only drama I have queued up for a rewatch is When the Weather is Fine, but it has a different feel (not sci-fi/fantasy).

  20. I took a nap and I woke up slightly disoriented. I had a hectic week, I suppose I am just tired.

In August, I will be taking my days off and I won’t have steady internet wifi. I thought I have told you that. 🀨😊 I would love to watch Nine, but I haven’t watched it so, I need time to watch it first and I don’t know if I have this time around.

  21. Hello @We and @salteddust

  22. @Hi cleo; I wish you a good rest.

  23. Thank you @WE πŸ™‚

  24. @sattleddust, MOTA is W writer too, lol, you accumulate all her dramas at once. It’s my second favorite one from hers.

  25. Should we start?

  26. yeah googogogogogoogo

  27. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @salteddust, it does not have to be sci-fi or fantasy, although I suggested it based on our current ‘W’.

    @WE is suggesting classics!

@WE I was able to get my daughter to leave earlier so that we could come home and rest. I was trying to watch Yumi’s Cells, but was as usual, sleepy. I’ll continue on it tomorrow.

    Let’s start the party now!!!

  28. Too much content in the episode, no time for resume. πŸ™‚
Kang Chul plan about his “death”, trying to make Han Chul Ho kill the killer.
We get the situation with regular flashback with KCH plan.

  29. I am going to watch Yumi tomorrow as well. Two episodes are on Viki.

Back to W: We get to see our antagonist Han Chul-Ho in the first scenes. I dislike him in this role…

  30. With goosebump piano music. ofc. ^^

  31. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @Cleo, I thought you meant that you wanted to take a break in July.

Not a problem… let me check the dates. If we take ‘W’ as a 16 episode drama, we end on 2 July. If we want to watch Episode 17, then we end on 9 July.

We can take a break and come back in September. We just have to decide on a show.

  32. Han Chul Ho will try to kill the killer but then things will be out of hand.

  33. SungMoo killer insulting police and give them orders. The nerve. Scary with the light/dark filmo.

  34. I was a little disoriented to see Han CHul-Ho right away. But it does a good job of setting things up. We are now right in the thick of things.

  35. @GB Unnie,

Okay. We have time to do that. Let us think about shows and suggest even at the end of the episodes.

  36. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

LOL I’m more or less at the part where Soo Bong is once again about to eat noodles and YJ calls.

He checks on SM but covers his eyes LOL, what can that help since he has to look at him anyway!!

  37. Kim Eui-Sung is an amazing actor. He plays the killer and his sociopath persona so very good…

  38. Romantic BGM as Yeon Joo make up.
    Then start the daydream…

  39. I really like that Soo Bong is calling Yeon Joo noona, but Netflix doesn’t translate that.

  40. Ah no, it’s more complicated, I forgot. We go back to Yeon Joo in the street, then what look like real planification with KCH/Soo Bong, then hypothetical (+voice over), then back to daydream. Gosh.
    With the hopefull romantic song.

  41. Soo Bong CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP is improvisation on set. πŸ™‚

  42. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @Cleo, yes Sung Moo actor is a well known, veteran actor and more in films.

KC watching people laying flowers at the graveyard.

The hope for a happy ending. Nice relaxing music for a while.

  43. @GB Unnie,

I really enjoyed him on “Taxi Driver”, along with Lee JeHoon.

I am in the same part as well..

  44. Kang Chul try to smile to Sung-Moo. Faces… ^^
    Go game… Mother presentation (suspicious).

  45. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, I wondered why SB was eating so loudly.

LOL KC trying to smile at SM. It was a fail.

    SM is a sore loser.

  46. Pink sweats scene, just ready to go directly in a MV on youtube, LOL!

  47. Something a bit crazy about W. Kang Chul is supposed to be a hero, but really all the time, he’s never here to save Yeon Joo. Episode 4 plane, episode 8 killer in real world. And here he go in W while Yeon Joo will get serious problems.

Hilarious scene with prof Park now. πŸ™‚

  48. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Fortunately we get a few nice dating scenes. There will be long break without happy scenes from the end of this episode.

  49. Even for a comedic joke, Kang Chul has a plan that puzzle Yeon Joo. πŸ™‚

  50. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE yes, I’m watching Crazy Dog being his crazy self. Why should he interrupt YJ’s date to complain about a manhwa…sheesh.

  51. The happy scenes have this built in tension because you know you are episodes away from the finale. No way can everything wrap up so neatly now, even though YJ imagines it will. Waiting for the other shoe to drop.

  52. Seo Hee is here… mysterious BGM (main theme with a vvvvraaashhh and brrrrmmm).

  53. @GB Unnie,

He was being so rude himself.

  54. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

LOL Park finds KC familiar and becomes a fan. What a hard hit on his shoulder. LOL.

  55. @Salteddust yes we are going to have some variables taking place and things will go out of hand…

  56. @Cleo, I like how Kang Chul never get angry, keep is cool and make fun of it. Nice personnality, sure of himself and not getting nervous for random things.

  57. @WE true…

You are right about it. If another was there would be offended.

  58. Kang Chul thinks painfully. ^^
    With a piano music goosebump. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  59. Here the blood freezing cold filter effect I was talking. Currently 2 filters, one at the beginning and a more cold one later. We don’t see it, unless to rewatch and take care of that. But sure, it makes a phychological effect to the audience.

  60. Like in Terminator 2 movie, the killer disguise as a cop. πŸ˜‰

  61. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

So with the return of SM, we get the end of the imagined happy times.

  62. @GB unnie and @WE,

The last parts of the episode will be hard…

  63. The Killer know to travel between worlds now because he have read the manhwa and see Kang Chul could do that.

  64. Over time, so many weird things happen than Han Chul Ho self awarness grow step by step.

Kang Chul to Soo-Bong (with a gun), “it’s dangerous here”… Anything to make Soo-Bong crazy during all the drama. πŸ™‚

Tablet destroyed, to add more tension and closed doors.

  65. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, so this time when Killer gets pulled out of the W interrogation room, was it KC who summoned him accidentally?

  66. @GB, yes, the killer was summoned by accident. There is a Kang Chul voice over before “did I summoned someone else?”.

  67. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE yes I wondered about that KC wondering if he summoned someone. Not sure of the timing whether it was really that 1 hour ago.

So KC’s death is again unraveled in ‘W’ … back to square 1. Poor SB is having heart trouble over manhwa characters.

  68. If we think more about the story building, it’s why there is first this Seo Hee situation. So we get first the logic of the phenomena and can accept the killer summoning, as well create suspens.

  69. Kang Chul is anxious about Yeon Joo…

  70. The killer is maybe self-aware but he confirms to Yeon-Joo he don’t have other choice than killer her. But unlike Kang Chul, he don’t care to free from his fate.

Kang Chul short unsumoning. To get more chaos feeling, and also make sure he sees the situation on the manhwa.

  71. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Cleo we seldom see KC fight. He is desperate to find YJ and starts fighting HCH.

  72. Kang Chul sees Yeon Joo supposed dead. Now he can kill the killer, it fits the manhwa logic of a final confrontation. So this time, he won’t vanish if he kills.

  73. @GB Unnie,

True. He wants to find her…

  74. As a joke, many time in dramas we see gangster using blunt weapons instead of guns (but law is very severe about gun in Korea). Only here, the vilain is a gunman, so he decimate the gang. Kind of trope subversion.

  75. “What is your relation with her?”
“I am her husband”. TT TT TT

  76. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, what triggered to “To be Continued” chryon for KC?

  77. He will try to look for her, but she is not in the webtoon any longer.
She went back to her world.

  78. @GB, easy. Yeon Joo death!!
We see first KCH unsummoning, he reads the manhwa, part with Yeon Joo treatened.
Then come back to live action but as a flashback in W. The killer shoot.
KCH continue to read and see Yeon Joo on the ground “to be continued”.

  79. I think this scene made Kang Chul remember all his trauma when his parents died.

  80. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, the sequence is crazy. Don’t know which came first to cause what.

  81. The next episode is the most tragic one…

  82. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, so all the happy scenes with ‘dad’ were just imagination. The dates, though, were real. Quite confusing!

  83. Whew! I had to just watch this one (even though this is my second time). Too much happening.

  84. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Me too @salteddust. I couldn’t comment. I had to watch or at least try through my sleepiness LOL.

  85. When I first watched this, I wanted to find out what happened.
Episode 14 is one of the most difficult ones..

  86. @GB, yeah confusing, the director did a good job with blur but first time I wasn’t sure too where I was!! After rewatch it was clear. It’s the most complex and beautiful screenplay ever. I need to rewatch some dramas like 365 to check, but currently it’s my statement. It’s a drama we enjoy even more on second watching than first one. And this is so much dense than any further rewatch are also worth it. πŸ™‚
At one point I couldn’t escape this magic and prefered to rewatch W than watch a new drama when this new drama was just a bit “meh”.
Only two dramas I could watch after was “Pinnochio” and “King2Heart”.

  87. I didn’t have time to post screenplay excerpt last week, I was a bit short on time. And here, I’ve didn’t have time to re-read the screenplay too. I’ll publish all this anyway, but I don’t know when.

  88. I have to go now! I will read you all later on!

Have a lovely Saturday ahead !

  89. Goodbye and good night!!

  90. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks @WE. No hurry with the screenplay.

I’ll try to watch a bit more.

  91. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Goodbye, good afternoon and good night all!

  92. Goodbye all; three acquaintances with children graduating from high school; all with parties today. We are off to see them all; all outdoors on a rainy day.

  93. The drama now strings together complex, non-chronological scene orders, scattered over large parts of the episode. This requires some reverse engineering to study the structure.

    *************************************************************

    Han Chul Ho’s manipulated.

A complex scene chronology, with scene #15 as the final objective.
    – Han Chul Ho is anxious about Kang Chul’s will.
    – Intercalated then, flashbacks with Kang Chul and Soo-Bong developing this part of the plan.
    – Then Han Chul Ho becomes anxious about the killer.
    – Again, this part of the plan with Kang Chul and Yeon Joo.

This starts from Han Chul Ho’s present situation (and what he will do in real time at the end) and intersperses the combination of Kang Chul’s plan and the effects of the plan on Han Chul Ho. In short, it shows three aspects of the drama, as they serve together.
At the end, Han Chul Ho must be convinced that he must eliminate the killer, as in the manhwa’s intended plan. His thought voice over is similar to a comic book bubble and the last scene disolves from real to manhwa.

  96. The Killer disguised as a father.

A chronologically dispersed situation. Both to hook/surprise, and also to show the main situation (Yeon-Joo and her father, in truth the killer) by having at the same time the explanations. And the revelation at the end that the father is the killer (although we suspect it long before).

    Chronologically, it would be:
1 – Kang Chul sees Seo Hee.
2 – Kang Chul understands that he can summon characters from the manhwa in the real world.
3 – The Killer escapes and goes to the real world.
4 – Kang Chul learns that the Killer has escaped.
5 – The Killer goes to Oh Sung-Moo’s house and disguises himself as the father.
6 – Yeon Joo is happy to see her father.
7 – The father is suspicious and eventually reveals he is not the father.
8 – The killer threatens Yeon Joo.

    In the drama, it is:
1 – Kang Chul sees Seo Hee.
6 – Yeon Joo is happy to see her father.
2 – Kang Chul understands that he can summon manhwa characters in the real world.
7 – The father is suspicious and eventually reveals he is not the father.
4 – Kang Chul learns that the Killer has escaped.
3 – The Killer escapes and goes to the real world.
5 – The Killer goes to Oh Sung-Moo’s house and disguises himself as the father.
8 – The Killer threatens Yeon Joo.

    ***************************************************************

    Scenes detail.

The meaning of a scene and the transitions make it clear why the order was made the way it was.
For example, when Kang Chul wonders “did I summon someone else?”, we switch to the scene with Yeon-Joo and her father, when he becomes a suspect. As a spectator, we immediately understand that this is not the real father. This allows two things:
    – A better understanding of Sung-Moo’s lines (in real, he questions Yeon-Joo to find out where Kang Chul is).
    – Dramatic irony, always excellent for provoking suspense. We know, but the heroine does not know. Moreover, the dialogue lines are convincing and innocent enough that she doesn’t suspect anything until the end.

  97. The Killer shoots Yeon-Joo

What is interesting here is that even for a short time, the scenario foreshadow a very serious event. Not only that, but with an unavoidable feel. It is too late, it has already happened, but we do not know what yet.
This is explained in scenes #87 to #91, which are actually a flashback.

    Summary:
    – Yeon Joo is threatened by the killer.
    – Kang Chul sees “to be continued” and is brought back to the real world. He starts reading the manhwa to find out why.
    – The following events are what happened, but LIVE. We assume that Kang Chul is reading this on the manhwa.
    – The killer shoots Yeon Joo, she collapses on the ground.
    – Kang Chul sees Yeon Joo mortally wounded on the ground in the manhwa.

Kang Chul’s transitions between W and Real World are easy for the audience, since it is night in W and it is day in the real world.

  98. The final duel between Kang Chul and the Killer.

The scene is different from the drama. In the screenplay, Kang Chul surprises the Killer and drives into his car from the side. Then he gets out of his car to shoot him.

The director of the drama preferred a head-on collision, with the opponents recognizing each other before. They are as enraged as each other and they charge at each other. This sounds more like a “final confrontation”, although it is also very rushed.

The solution of the drama also respects more the logic of manhwa. What allows Kang Chul to kill the Killer is precisely the fact that it is a final confrontation (otherwise, his character is not allowed to kill). The solution of the screenplay (taken by surprise) does not respect the rule of a fair final duel.

Check who’s in the headlights and bang on the side before you can dodge.
Sung Moo stumbles and falls for a moment, then comes to his senses and immediately sees Kang Chul coming out. Sung Moo, …?!! I never thought Kang Chul would come so soon.

    SUNG MOO – That bird…

Sung Moo picks up the pistol next to him, but Kang Chul fires Sung Moo first.
Sung Moo hits first and the aim shakes, Sung Moo’s gun slams Kang Chul’s shoulder.
Kang Chul fires again without hesitation. Sung Moo, !!! Dropped a pistol in my hand…
Sung Moo writhes in the car, unbelts him and tries to run away, but Kang Chul approaches and uses all his anger to fire at Sung Moo.
Sung Moo shakes his limbs and fails to fight once, and ends up crumpling in the driver’s seat
Kang Chul, finding the dead Sung Moo, who had been brutally shot all over his body, drooping, and dead with his eyes open, runs straight to the country house.
