2022 Dramas: The Year in Review

As requested by @Welmaris. –pm3

🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸

It’s that time of the year again to look back on the dramas we watched and to judge them.

Just a couple of reminders:

One, the year hasn’t ended yet and this month’s crop of new dramas can still make it to this list. You might want to save some space.

Two, you don’t have to complete the challenge. I know many of you are obsessive-compulsive like me. But don’t stress yourself out filling all the blanks.

This year, I made two separate ways of categorizing dramas. Feel free to mix-and-match.

A. The first one is created by @anniedelavoye. If you have twitter, please do like it. It’s her pinned tweet.

credit: @anniedelavoye

If you can’t read it, here’s her list.

1. First drama completed in 2022

2. Favorite actress discovered in 2022

3. Favorite actor discovered in 2022

4. Favorite original song from a 2022 drama

Hahaha. I dropped almost 3/4th of the dramas this year.

7. Favorite character of 2022

8. A 2022 drama with an interesting story

9. Oldest drama you watched in 2022

@GB will have something to say about this.

11. A drama that kept you on the edge of your seat

12. A drama friendship that stole the show

13. A drama you found boring

14. A writer or director who caught your attention

There are 31 items altogether because you’re supposed to answer one a day. But in this blog, feel free to pick and choose. No pressure.

B. The second one is created by moi

Real Housewives Hair Flip GIF

and it involves tropes. It’ll take a bit more time (and a good memory) to answer.

1. Best meet-cute of 2022

2. Worst drunken moment scene of 2022

3. Best piggyback of 2022

4. Best playground scene of 2022

Playgrounds are ubiquitous in kdramas because it’s easy to imagine and stage a story in them. The lead characters could have played in the sandbox when they were children or they could be having a romantic interlude on the swings.

5. Best couple of 2022 (can be real or reel)

6. Fakest couple of 2022 (again can be real or reel)

7. Saddest funeral scene of 2022

There’s always somebody dying in kdramas so there must have been one that sticks in your mind.

8. Best showdown of 2022

If you grew up watching American Western movies, then you would know what a showdown is. It’s the final confrontation between two (or three) cowboys. Guns are de rigueur.

Like this from “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”.

And this from “High Noon”.

Now, the Korean version of the showdown involves no guns but it’s the same camera perspective: the couple face each other like enemy combatants.

From “Memories of the Alhambra”

From “Crash Landing on You”

From “Goblin”

9. Corniest childhood/forgotten friend storyline of 2022

10. Most memorable bridge/tunnel/overpass of 2022

We have to thank kdramas for adding to our list of engineering feats to visit next time we visit South Korea.

11. Worst possible amnesia of 2022

Hahaha. I’m still waiting for “Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow” to air.

12. Most memorable animal of 2022

Move over Maximus (the horse in “The King, Eternal Monarch”). You’re so 2020. We have a new fave in 2022.

13. Best fashionista of 2022, male or female

We know this, right? No matter how poor the heroine is, she’ll always have a fashionable bag or a to-die-for winter coat.

14. Most obvious product placement of 2022

15. Most melodramatic “Don’t go!” scene of 2022

Bonus point if this is from a Chinese drama.
Bonus point if he’s going off to a battle where he’s expected to die. Lol.

16. Best proposal of 2022

That’s it!

🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸

To get you started, I’ve answered some of them.

1. Best meet-cute of 2022

My answer: Meeting Samantha and Rachel in “Business Proposal”

2. Worst drunken moment scene of 2022

My answer: Pants down…errr…hands down, this scene from “Business Proposal”
Yuck. Yuck. There’s nothing romantic about drunken sex.

I wrote about this. And since this a big issue for me in kdramas, I’ll repeat my message here.

In my book, this puppy-eyed guy assaulted her. He KNEW very well that she was intoxicated and didn’t know what the hell she was doing.

He had one bottle, She finished…what four? five? bottles? Her cheeks were flushed.

She wasn’t steady on her feet.

She was babbling about things she wouldn’t have said when sober.

She was slurring her words.

He knew she couldn’t stand on her own without falling down.

Her personal inhibitions were nonexistent.

Yet he had sex, NON-consensual sex, with her.

This isn’t funny at all. It’s horrifying.

What he should have done — what any gentleman would have done — was call up a female friend, like Hari, to come pick her up as quickly as possible, either at his place or at the convenience store. Meanwhile, he could stay with her until she sobered up or the female friend came for her.

If he must bring her back to his home, she should sleep on the bed, in his room, by herself.

This drunk sex scenario didn’t have to happen.

It infuriates me that the screenwriter and director used it to move the couple’s relationship forward. The viewers are left with the utterly wrong impression that:

a. it’s okay that she had drunken sex that she couldn’t remember afterwards. It’s okay because “love conquers all.” 🤯

b. if a similar situation happens to them in real life, then it’s okay, too. As long as the guy is handsome, she got “lucky” or something. 🤬

An intoxicated person cannot give consent. Non-consensual sex is sexual assault.

I wish kdrama writers would stop normalizing this drunk sex.

YARN | Why does this keep happening? | 30 Rock (2006) - S04E15 Don Geiss, America and Hope | Video gifs by quotes | 15a6e979 | 紗

This keeps happening because silly fangirls think there’s nothing wrong and lap up this kind of moronic behavior.

But I say that this binge-drinking trope in kdramas should be toned down. (Preferably eliminated, if I’m the media entertainment czar. Lol.) In the same way that producers avoid scenes depicting cigarette smoking as deterrence, or they pixelate guns, tattoos and nipples in order not to offend fragile sensibilities, they should demand writers to limit the use of binge-drinking as a plot device.

Drinking immoderately is never the correct and responsible message they want to send to their viewers, especially the young ones.

8. Best showdown of 2022

For me, the drama with the “best” showdown was “Twenty Five, Twenty One.” To be clear, I considered it “best” because it had the most.

The number of the showdowns, especially in the final episode, should have given the audience an inkling that the two lead characters were heading towards a standoff, and eventually a standstill. The couple had reached a deadlock in their relationship. They would have to settle for a draw.

Here are the four showdowns from that last episode alone.

Then, a standoff his-and-her perspective.

And the imaginary one running in her head in the final scene.

The tunnel was there all along. What was missing was a trainwreck to complete the picture of how I felt about this drama.

10. Most memorable bridge/tunnel/overpass of 2022

From “A Business Proposal”

To me, the setting worked for the couple. A bridge can be viewed as a neutral place for two polar-opposite individuals like Hari and Taemoo to meet.

I like the crisscrossed bars hanging over this pedestrian bridge. Their complicated design reminds me of Taemoo’s character; he’s also complicated. I like the vertical parallel bars on the sides of the bridge. They remind me of Hari’s character. She’s simple and loyal.

In case you’re wondering, this bridge is called the Hwarangyuk Bridge. Visit this site if you want to know more about it, and other unique locations shown in kdramas: koreandramaland.com

12. Memorable animals of 2022

Mine is the “Naughtysaurus” from “Yumi’s Cells.” Synonym: Lustisaurus.

Me: sees gif of Wi HaJoon.

#wi ha-joon from depression era

Lol. I must admit that this is a gratuitous gif of the actor. But…but…but what’s up with those gnarly veins on his arm? Ewww.

My Cells: “Release the kraken…errr… Naughtysaurus!”

My second runner up is Archaeopteryx from “A Business Proposal.”

I still remember the line.

Taemoo: So tell me why you don’t want to marry me.
Hari: I don’t like everything about you. I don’t like how cheesy your weird lines are and how your face looks like an archaeopteryx.

Later on, he would ask her, “In what way, do I look like an archaeopteryx?”

When I squint my eyes, Paul Ahn does look like an archaeopteryx.

14. Most obvious product placement of 2022

Kopiko.

I’ll give you a star if you can tell me a kdrama with Kopiko PPL. 🙂

That’s it. Enjoy answering the list.

  1. Old American Lady (OAL)

@packmule3, I love your list. Some of your answers were the first things to come into my head. I also have my shortest drama that I found quite satisfying, 4 episodes of Fanletter Please. It also b4ings to mind a real couple other than Son Ye Jin and Hyun Bin(be still my heart and baby too).

My other reason for a response here is that somany bridges and roofs are both romantic and tragic places;tragic being suicide sites. It’s a strange paradox.

I’m also with you on drunken sex. I think the Koreannalcohol culture from mandatory team dinners to soju with everything is troubling. But this culture is not confined to Korea. A rite of passage in British and Irish culture is when a teen, mainly male, drinks his first pint in a pub. A pint is a lot to drink. Then one graduates to hard liquor. We also know that vodka is the norm in Russian culturecwhere the age of death, particularly in males is going down. However, in French, Spanish and Italian cultures where wine is the thing, we don’t seecregular drunkeness in dramas. But in K Dramas women drink to excess. I wonder if the reason S. Korea has such a robust coffee culture(iced black Americano) is to wake up drinkers and make them lucid at work. I guess it I d8fficult to change cultural norms. The drinking culture is some t hing that I do wish wasn’t emphasized in K Dramas.

I am waiting to complete your questions until the end of December. So many good dramas yet to come in December….

  2. @OAL,

Because of kdramas and cdramas, I learned to associate bridges with lovers and rooftops with ninjas. 🥷🏻

I’ll check out this “Fanletter Please.” It’s on Viki, right?

  3. I agree with both of you so far on two things:
    — Worst drunken scene was that awful hook-up (can you even call it that if one person is unconscious?) in Business Proposal.

–I think my favorite short drama was Fanletter, Please also. Actually I can’t think of any other short dramas I watched this year. But it was an easy watch that left no loose ends, which was ultimately about kindness.

–Other than that, I don’t think I can write up my list until some of the current dramas have finished. For example, Under the Queen’s Umbrella will probably be one of my top dramas of the year unless they screw up the ending (the last two episodes air this weekend). I say this with caution because they screwed up the endings of both Love in Contract and Love is for Suckers (which just ended today). [Maybe bad/sloppy endings should be an additional category?] So I’ll plan to make my list in the next week or so!

  4. You’re right, @Beth.

“Screwed up endings” should definitely be a category. Since I know we’re all going to bitch about this category, I’ll open another thread entirely for this topic.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

  5. Old American Lady (OAL)

    @packmule3, It’s on Viki.

  6. @packmule3 Kopiko and Fullerton Hotel…🤦‍♀️ Little Women. This drama also slots into 26 for me, ie “Most disappointing drama”.

  7. You get a star, @nrllee.

Kopiko was in “Little Women.” Fullerton Hotel.

I thought “Once Upon a Small Town” had Kopiko so I checked. They had “Maxim” White Gold and Mocha Gold for instant coffee (Ep 2 at 11:12). Then they had the Kopiko coffee candy (Ep 11 at 9:25) lol.

I learned that Kopiko isn’t Korean but an Indonesian candy company. Nice!

  8. Kopiko also appeared in Today’s Webtoon.
    https://www.intipseleb.com/gaya-hidup/44039-heboh-kopiko-muncul-di-little-women-today-rsquo-s-webtoon-hingga-adamas

I notice it in the dramas I watch because I happen to like Kopiko 😂.

  9. @packmule3, it seems Kopiko is in every Kdrama set in modern day that I’ve watched recently. It’s as ubiquitous as Subway used to be.

  10. @Packmule3 – love your intro to this and the questions and the discussion!

All the piggy back scenes have blurred into one piggy back scene in my mind… ditto a number of the questions you ask.

However…for Meet Cute the most memorable/unusual one, aside from the wonderfully re-watchable Business Proposal scene, might be Extraordinary Attorney Woo and the lesson in how to dance through a revolving door.

For Meet Cute in process (an expanded category!!), I laughed so much at the FL hiding in the kitchen having eaten much of the food and plating up mini meals (nouveau cuisine style) for Bai Jingting’s perplexed ML.

My favourite Meet Cute (2021 but just for comparison) is the wonderfully slapstick encounter in Red Sleeved Cuff with FL crashing through bushes and falling into ML’s arms before knocking him into a pond.

  11. p.s Meet Cute in process is in an early episode of New Life Begins!

  12. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    GB’s Weird Review (in parts)
(I’m deliberately breaking this up into shorter segments, so please look out for more.)

@pkml3, thanks for giving us a thread and opportunity to review what we’ve watched this year, and in our own way. I don’t normally bother to do this, because my memory is so poor. By the end of the year, I’ve the haziest recollections and just a general sense of whether I enjoyed something or not.

In my own incorrigible way, I decided to do this from the other way around. I start with the shows first ie choose the shows I remember, and use those for some of the questions here, and for questions that I create on the spur of the moment. I will also include shows that aired earlier than 2022, if I watched them this year.

I realised to my sad surprise, that although I watched several shows and invested many hours, there were few that I really cared for.

My absolute favourite show this year: the cdrama, Love Between Fairy and Devil. I watched it, and immediately rewatched it, and both times it did far more than satisfy. I also watched parts of it more than just twice!

    So for the categories of:
Show that was better than expected, that had an actor which became ‘Favorite actor discovered in 2022’, that gave me the ‘Favorite original song from a 2022 drama’, that met the standards of what a good period cdrama should be and that gave some of the best couple scenes with honest, rational dialogue – the award goes to LBFD.

Second and third in line for Show that was unexpectedly good, are yet other cdramas, Reset and The Rational Life.

In fact I found the cdramas with the time travel element, pretty watchable. Another one that was better than expected was Love in Time

On the whole, this year I enjoyed more cdramas than kdramas. 
    …(to be continued)

  13. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    GB’s Weird Review continued-01…
Most forgettable and shortest drama watched in 2022: Soundtrack #1 at a mere 4 episodes. I literally had to check back on what it was about because the title rang no bells for me.

For the category of anticipated show that did not live up to expectations, The Sound of Magic. I felt that so much more could have been done to incorporate magic into helping the young people/teenagers develop better to deal with real life situations. While the music was OK, again the musical parts did not help drive the plot as far as they might. I found them to be mostly fun, tuneful interludes.

Best, most convincing portrayal of character for me was Kim Tae Ri as teenager Na Hee Do in Twenty-Five, Twenty-One. This show is a winner for me for saddest song, most nostalgic rendition of a past relationship and best enemies to frenemies to best friends pairing between Na Hee Do and Go Yu Rim. The reason I didn’t mind the ending… the song had given it away from the start.

Show that was a waste of time: A Romance of the Little Forest.
Shows that had potential but which disappointed: There are too many but on the top of my list because I had more expectations for it was Grid.

  14. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    GB’s Weird Review continued_02…

Rewatched Shows: I find shows are better appreciated with a rewatch, therefore I rewatched many. The best was still LBFD but close to this was ‘W – Two Worlds’, ‘Reset’ and now ‘Liar Game Season 1’. I also thoroughly enjoyed Goblin and Just Between Lovers. On the whole, shows we chose to rewatch were just even better because of the company commenting along with me.

Sidenote: I would like to continue our previous Wednesday free floating rewatch day. That was the day when anyone of us could post stuff on which ever episodes of a chosen show we were rewatching, although we could not rewatch it together in real time. We had the freedom to come and go according to our own time. That’s one option that I’d like to retain for rewatches, even if they do not fall on Wednesdays!

@Viva, @agdr03, @nrllee and all those very much to the East, who start their day earlier, I’d actually like to have 10.00 UTC rewatches with you if a show met our criteria and we could find a day that could fit our schedules.

(probably to be continued when more thoughts hit me … or maybe after I’ve finished another series.) 

  15. @GB

Continuing the theme of top ‘meet cutes’ – you reminded me that ‘Love of Fairy and Devil’ has a great ‘meet cute of the uncertain kind and then that surprise kiss!

And an honourable mention, too, for the edge of seat tense ‘meet cute’ in ‘You are my Hero’ … with Bai Jingting and Sandra Ma…even though the show is technically from last year.

  16. I remember that meet-cute from “You Are My Hero.” Actually, “cute” isn’t the right way to describe their first meeting. More like “explosive” first meeting.

I know now that the way Bai Jing Ting’s character drawled and made light of the situation is the reason I fell for the guy.

And his eyes! Although the balaclava was hiding his face and you couldn’t tell if he was smiling under the face mask, his eyes were definitely smiling at her.

And the actress was great, too. She made a believable hostage.

  17. @Packmule3 – this brings back memories of that scene… especially his eyes and the tone of his voice! I love the way he speaks – can’t quite work out what is involved when he drawls… there’s something languid/throwaway about it.

Agreed…Sandra Ma was so natural… terrified but courageous and having to trust him.

May have to re-watch just that episode now.

  18. Tell me when and I’ll join you for a rewatch. Hahaha.

  19. And when they met again because she was fleeing from her boot camp and he picked her up? IIRC she gossiped about her absent boot camp officer, not knowing that she was speaking to devil himself.

Yes, that’s her name! Sandra Ma! She looked so wholesome in this drama.

  20. Big smile here. I’ll certainly let you know!

  21. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Kate, now you’re tempting me to start watching cdrama You Are My Hero.

    Too much good stuff.

I’ve just started dorama First Love and it’s a keeper!!! Can’t help myself, I’m making notes about it, although I know @Welmaris has probably covered all the bases. I just am so drawn in by the emotions it elicits.

  22. @GB – I’ll let you know too when I have my mini re-watch and you can see if you like the first episode! No pressure of course on you or @Packmule3.

I am also interested in ‘First Love’ depending on where I can watch it. Viki is not working for me any longer – even when I change and update browsers. I can watch on my Smartphone only. I’ve pulled out of Viki for now.

  23. @Packmule3 – Yes – that second meeting – ‘the devil himself’ – he was wonderfully dead pan as we the audience looked on agog wondering when she would discover! haha

I think, from memory, he fell for her during the hostage incident – so he was having to tussle with himself about the way he treated her during that entire training course. That made it great fun to watch and ramped up the romantic tension so well.

  24. As a by the by, ‘You are My Hero’ was nominated for an Emmy this year in the same international telenovela category as the winning show The King’s Affection.

    https://www.iemmys.tv/programs-performances-from-23-countries-nominated-for-2022-international-emmy-awards/

I can’t remember what people thought of TKA – for me it dragged after a while and a far better series could have been nominated – The Red Cuff Sleeve for instance- so this must be big media business stuff… but, nevertheless, worth noting.

  25. @Kate and @Packmule3, I’d also be in for a partial rewatch of You Are My Hero. Loved that show, although some sections seemed like propaganda.

I recently got my Spotify summary of 2022, and the OSTs I listened to most frequently were My Liberation Notes, Doom at Your Service, and You Are My Spring. Of those, these songs never fail to raise goosebumps when I listen to them:

To Be Together, by Jun Hyung Lee, from My Liberation Notes. I will not fail to think of this show whenever I hear the opening piano chords of this song. I’m especially moved when there’s a brief pause, then full orchestration bursts in, followed a few measures later by a marching beat played on a snare drum. Good stuff!

Deeply, by HEN, from My Liberation Notes. It’s ethereal, and perfectly captured Yeom Mi Jeong’s melancholy mood as she stared out the taxi window. Hearing this song puts me on the edge of tears, but in a good way.

For songs that make me want to beat my chest in anguish, there are Breaking Down by AILEE, from Doom at Your Service. “…I’m breaking down…” And In Ruin by Raiden, from You Are My Spring. “We fight, we fall, we rise up again…in ruin.” Just like singing the blues, a sad, angry song can make the listener feel better when it’s over.

A song that makes me want to move is Falling Flower by Yang Da Il, from You Are My Spring, with its waltz beat. I’ll admit to surrendering to the rhythm when I’m home alone.

My #1 favorite song from a 2022 OST is Love Sight by TOMORROW X TOGETHER, from Doom at Your Service. When it breaks into harmonies I get goosebumps on goosebumps. And the rhythm makes me picture a ballroom dance couple doing a rumba.

  26. Dang! I didn’t realize that Doom at Your Service and You Are My Spring both aired in 2021. I guess that means the only OST that has grabbed my attention this year is My Liberation Notes.

  27. So far I’ve completed 27 dramas that were released in 2022, and am watching six more currently airing in December. I’ve also finished a number of older dramas this year, but can’t remember which because they’ve blended into previous years’ entries on MyDramaList. Of the 2022 dramas I’ve completed, these have been my favorite Kdramas:

    Business Proposal
    My Liberation Notes
    Yumi’s Cells 2

    My favorite Cdramas:

    Love between Fairy and Devil
    Love in Time

And my favorite Jdorama was First Love: Hatsukoi

–The female lead in Business Proposal had the zippiest comebacks.
–My Liberation Notes was an excellent slice-of-life drama with a stellar cast that was able to bring both humor and pathos to their roles.
–Yumi’s Cells 2 continued to be one of the more creatively presented stories I’ve seen in an Asian drama.
–Love between Fairy and Devil tops my list this year for beautiful costuming and set design. And does anyone do a better side eye than Dylan Wang as Dongfang Qingcang? Nope. No one.
–Love in Time had me rooting from start to finish for the couple thrown together by a time lap for only 42 minutes a day.
–First Love: Hatsukoi is a beautifully presented story of intense love of youth, shelved dreams, the lives adults are expected to lead, endurance, and reckoning with one’s true heart. The relationships between characters are written believably, despite not always being healthy. I loved the dynamics of the family in which the male lead grew up. The female lead had a loving mother, but suffered when her mom transferred her own fears and disappointments onto her daughter.

  28. @Welmaris, @Packmule3 and @GB,

If any of you fancy a mini re-watch/taster for ‘You are my Hero’ later this week. I could do this Friday between 8pm and 11 pm inclusive GMT, London, UK time; or on Saturday between 9 am and 11 pm inclusive.

Let me know if this appeals. I’ll let others know if we find a time that works. We can do this any time btw so if closer to Christmas works or in the new year, let’s go for that instead.

  29. @Kate, my schedule is open this Friday and Saturday. (I’m retired, children are grown and out of the house, so my schedule is open more often than not.) But 9am GMT is 1am PST, so I’m not likely to want to join a rewatch that early.

  30. Thanks @Welmaris. It looks like GMT from 5pm onwards will work best for everyone.

  31. @Kate, is the day yet to be determined?

  32. The scene that most tickled my funny bone in a 2022 drama was in My Liberation Notes: Yeom Chang Hee, having discovered on a shelf in Mr. Gu’s bathroom the key fob for a Rolls-Royce, begs…pleads…INSISTS of Mr. Gu that he actually owns the car. Lee Min Ki perfectly depicted a combination of worship and desperation. When Mr. Gu confirmed it to be true, Chang Hee was beside himself. The humor, and worship, continued when Mr. Gu took Chang Hee to Seoul to see the car. When Mr.Gu let Chang Hee drive the car, CH entered a new plane of existence.

The second funniest scene, in my opinion, was when Chang Hee confessed to Mr. Gu that the back bumper of the Rolls-Royce had been dinged. Mr. Gu’s face tenses as he hears the news (great micro expressions by Son Suk Goo), but he seems calm as he looks at the damage. Despite Gu’s seeming lack of reaction, Chang Hee backs away slowly…then as quick as a shot, the chase is on.

  33. @Welmaris, yes it is.

I’m thinking of Friday (after 8pm GMT) or Saturday this week and have flexibility for next week too.

  34. Aww I love this post and yet I hate (too strong of a word) this post. I have a terrible memory and while I don’t want to see the answers I’m scare I won’t come up with any answers because I simply can’t remember enough of what I watch. Im not reading and will come back to try to answer 🤦‍♀️😂

  35. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@pkml3… I’m just testing to see if I can post on this thread. I can’t post on the Summer Strike thread.

  36. I found your “Summer Strike” in the spam box. Your posts are going to the spam box for some weird reason. But I can’t find your post for the ‘Dramas 2022 – Year in Review.’ 🙁

  37. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks heaps @pkml3. I sort of noticed it on this thread but didn’t bother to go into it other than post twice. Not to worry. I know roughly what I said in reply to @Kate and the rewatch of ‘You Are My Hero’. Hugs! 🤗 😃

  38. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

My Dear @Kate, this is my 3rd attempt to reply to you about the rewatch of You Are My Hero. My other posts got lost in hyperspace.

I believe I’m ok for a rewatch on Friday and/or Saturday after 10.00pm GMT (It will be 6am in the morning for me!) I was asking on one of those threads, which episodes we will be watching… or are you thinking of starting from Ep 1?

I’ve managed to watch up to Ep 7 now. It’s been cute and as long as I can FFD the long procedural scenes, it’s eminently watchable.

Let us know what time you finally decide on! 😃

  39. @GB – I’m glad you got through in the end!

I don’t know about @Packmule3 but @Welmaris is flexible this Friday and Saturday/

I propose that we go for this Friday evening at 10pm GMT and watch episode 1 and 2 if we have the energy for it!

It would be great if @Packmule3 can make it as well so I will send her a separate message in this thread.

  40. @Packmule3,

How do you feel about an Ep 1 and 2 rewatch of You are My Hero on Friday at 10pm GMT. This works for @GB (early start for her) and for @Welmaris.

Can you make this date? We could all manage the same time on Saturday.

  41. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Kate, and alerting @pkml3,… would you like to have the party on this thread or get a fresh one just for You Are My Hero?

  42. Oh good thinking @GB. It would be good to have a fresh thread if possible.

  43. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Kate, @pkml3 will be opening a thread for us soon. Here’s what I wrote to her on the other thread.

“The rewatch is actually spearheaded by @Kate.

You Are My Hero Rewatch Party
On Fridays and Saturdays starting 9th and 10th December 2022,
    at 10:00pm GMT/UTC

(this means that @Kate has to be online on Thursday and Friday night at 10pm?)

    which is:

    6.00am in Singapore/Perth/Taiwan
    7.00am in Seoul
    8.00am in Brisbane
    11.00am in Auckland
    2.00pm PST
    5.00pm EST
    11.00pm in Paris

I’m just listing more countries’ equivalent times for fun!”

  44. Hi @GB,

Thank you so much for moving this forward with your experience of how things best work.

Couple of modifications… I was actually thinking of either
Friday the 9th or Saturday 10th December.

Because some of us have to get up very early or stay up late, once in a week would seem best.

I am also thinking that we start and then see how we get on – a mini re-watch especially of the early scenes.

    How does that sound?

  45. Of course.. dear @GB – if there is momentum, there is nothing to stop a group continuing with this re-watch even if I drop off sooner!

  46. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@pkml3 Tagging you here on the change in the Rewatch Notice (We’ll confirm soon!)

Hi @Kate,… yes I was thinking that beyond the initial episodes, we might not want to watch the long stretches of episodes with rescue and medical intervention.

For a once a week rewatch, I vote for Saturdays, then late nights will only be on Fridays.

We can just start with Episodes 1 and 2 (about 40 minutes each?) and decide if we want to continue. How’s that?

(I’m thinking the cute episodes go up to around Episode 12… I have to check later.)

  47. @GB sounds good to me!

  48. My contribution to the thread. The rest will follow.

    1. First drama completed in 2022

“Our Beloved Summer” It was odd watching a summer-themed show in the winter. But one of the scenes, when the happy couple were playing in the snow, was a nice reminder the love is for all seasons.

    2. Favorite actress discovered in 2022

Hands down, it’s Kim Sejeong of “A Business Proposal” and “Today’s Webtoon”
Her fellow cast member, Seo “But I have no chinguuuu” HyeWon, is also memorable.

    3. Favorite actor discovered in 2022

I don’t know about “favorite” but here are the actors I discovered in 2022:

Choi WooShik of “Our Beloved Summer” — he’s an actor a girl can bring home to meet her parents
Son SeokGoo of “My Liberation Notes” – he’s actor a woman can bring with her to a car dealer or an auto repair shop (lol. You know what I mean. He looks like a mean customer; nothing will get past him.)
Wi Ha Joon of “Little Women” – an actor an ahjumma can bring to her high school class reunion (You’ll be the envy of your classmates.)

    4. Favorite original song from a 2022 drama

“We Know” (English Version) by O.WHEN from “Today’s Webtoon”

    5. A visually beautiful 2022 drama

Let me think some more about this

    6. A drama you dropped in 2022

I said I dropped almost 3/4th of the dramas this year.

    Let me see now…

“Secret Royal Inspector and Joy” (last episode shown on Dec 28, 2021 so technically it’s a 2021 kdrama): Taecyeon’s acting is still awkward. #sorry
“Moonshine” (began in late December 2021, ended in February 2022)
“Cheer Up” – first half hour got me down
“It’s Showtime” – Park Hae Jin looked tired most of the time, and had no chemistry with his leading lady
“Crazy Love” – didn’t like the black comedy
“Tomorrow” – still can’t stand Kim Hee Sun because I was traumatized by her character in “Alice”
“The Killer’s Shopping List” – boring. Lee Kwangsoo couldn’t save this. I don’t think he has what it takes to be a main character anyway.
“Love All Play” – Had high expectations. I thought this was going to be like “Racket Boys” but the plot is direction-less
“Bloody Heart” – politics too dark.
    “Link: Eat, Love, Die”
“Jinx’s Lover” – It was mind-blowing. My brains couldn’t reconcile SeoHyun’s ahjumma face with her aegyo character.
“Love is for Suckers” – draggy.
“Love in Contract” – Go Kyung Pyo was boring. Now I get why he has to be part of a love triangle. He can’t carry the story solo.
“Good Job” – Fun but this is more of a fanservice
“Call My Agent” – None of the cast members appealed to me. And that weird vibes of the step-siblings (they had the same father, didn’t they?) was pushing the envelope.

“You Are My Glory” – too long
“Love Between Fairy and Devil” – too long

    7. Favorite character of 2022

The misunderstood devil in “Love Between Fairy and Devil”. Although I didn’t finish the story, I can see why he’s a dreamboat. For example, I like that, despite his traumatic childhood experience of his gift of love (the musical instrument, right?) for his father being rejected, he kept giving gifts to the fairy. This tells me that he was naturally a generous and sensitive soul. Had his father NOT trained him to lose all feelings because they would weaken him, he would have been the sweetest devil ever. lol.

    8. A 2022 drama with an interesting story

    9. Oldest drama you watched in 2022

“Liar Game” (2007) and it shows that it’s from 15 years ago.

    10. Have you rewatched a drama in 2022?

I’m rewatching “You Are My Glory” right now

    11. A drama that kept you on the edge of your seat

    12. A drama friendship that stole the show

    13. A drama you found boring

    “Red Sleeves”

    14. A writer or director who caught your attention

The director of “Little Women” – I’ll keep an eye on her
The writer of “Little Women – rejected from my list

    15. Favorite drama poster of 2022

    16. Best actress of 2022

    17. Best actor of 2022

    18. Standout secondary character of 2022

Secondary characters/cartoon characters of “Yumi’s Cells”

    19. A drama that made you laugh

    “Yumi’s Cells”
