  1. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks for the thread and the updated times in the notice @pkml3! We finally enter the last 6 episodes for a twisty denouement. πŸ™‚

  2. The contents of the email I received have the old times. It is only on the website that the times are updated.

  3. I am loving these time travel watches.

I am almost finished rewatching QIHM For the umpteenth time. There are certain scenes that bring to mind our discussions from October. And that adds value and enjoyment to this rewatch. It is almost like this show is better with each rewatch. And I get Just as Many laugh out loud moments. I even start laughing just anticipating a funny scene.

I have closely examined the Park with the red.
Public phone and I am still not sure whether it is the same one or not as in nine.

All of this is a long way around to saying I am looking forward to today’s rewatch.

Has signal been decided for our next rewatch?Or is that still not final.

  4. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @MM, I’m happy to know that you’re enjoying the QIHM rewatches and look forward to today’s party. I am too!!! I’m just doing a rewatch of Nine: 9 Ep 20. Love it!!!

Yes, we’ve settled on Signal. That show also excites me. I recall being blown away by the logic of how the past and future interact and how it made sense.

Even now, watching Ep 20 of Nine: 9, I feel that too. I’m in awe of Writer SJJ.

See you in less than 3 hours!!!

  5. Hi, see you in one hour.

@MM, it’s magic of rewatching… Maybe we can also call that “confort” dramas?
When it’s so good, I prefer rewatch than watch something new but meh or “maybe meh”.
My most rewatched dramas: W two worlds, Liar game (jap), I hear your voice, Jang Ok Jung. Starting to > 12 times to 5 times.
Then, because we did rewatch parties, Memories of Alhambra (x4), QIHM (x3), Nine (x3)
Various others: Psychopath Diary (x2), Miss Ripley (x3), Love Story in Harvard (x2), While You Were Sleeping (x2), The Penthouse (x2), Yumi cells (x2), Bring It On, Ghost (x2), Pasta (x2). And some dramas I didn’t rewatch fully but some part or episodes.
Dramas I rewatch can be in my top list but not always (ex, I watched Empress Ki only once).

@GB. Yep, I remember Signal has high emotional impact, and I ended to like it more for that than the high-concept. The High-concept isn’t used that much. I remember there is probably an inconsistencies at one point, but don’t remember exactly what. So I’m curious to find what, or if I was right about that, or just I missed a point.

  6. I am not familiar with the term high concept. What exactly are you referring to when you use this word?

For signal I do remember being fascinated.By the way the time lines worked and how the crime was solved. It has been a while since I.Rewatched , so I am looking forward to a fresh rewatch of this show.

It is also a timely rewatch, as we may be treated to the sequel.Sometime in the relatively near future. Maybe the romance part will be highlighted.

  7. @MM, I too get particular enjoyment out of the rewatching the time travel dramas. For all rewatches, I notice things I had not before, mostly minor: the use of the OST, the image in the background, the way SJJ uses flashbacks (although @WE, it often takes you pointing things out for me to see it). For the time travel rewatches, figuring out the logic for the time travel (or more often having it explained) is part of the enjoyment as well. I just finished a particularly long 2-part novel by an excellent writer, Connie Willis, that I found particularly frustrating because there were no hints as to how the time travel was working (or not working) until the last 50 or so pages of a 490 page (1st book) plus 640 page (2nd book) series. The writing was superb or I would never have gotten that far but oh so frustrating after watching SJJ and at least getting hints along the way.

  8. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    Hi @WE, @SD, @MM, it’s time to start… NOW!!!

  9. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I’m glad we start with the date. It gets more confusing towards the end about when we are in the 2 Timelines.

  10. Hi SD, GB, MM.
    @MM, see “high-concept” on wiki. πŸ˜‰
@SD, when SJJ doesn’t give that much (if I compare to “back to the future”), your book is unfair.

  11. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

SW without a job spends 5 days in the dark, drinking away his sorrows without success. Not knowing that in the meantime, his brother has been fighting his own demons and failing.

  12. YH is a good friend. Like the way he wrinkles his nose when he enters the house. We are prepared to see all of the bottles. LOL

  13. Hi @SD, @GB,@MM, @WE and maybe @LL.

  14. JJ Likes to have her heroes stagger around doing heroic feats when they are recovering from stab wounds.

  15. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    Hi @FF!

Young Hoon asks SW if he can’t just go back to his place, let everything about MY go and act nonchalant like before. But there’s really no going back in one’s timeline.

  16. The way his Doctor friend behaved coming into the drunk.Den really communicated what it smelled like

  17. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM LOL did our hero in W and in QIHM do staggering around with stab wounds? I actually can’t recall.

  18. The number of alcoolh empty bottles is insane.

  19. @GB, for W it’s a bullet wound.
    But staggering with that, yes.

    Hi FF.

  20. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

The painful conversation between ‘niece’ and uncle. I look at their expressions as they speak as normally as they can.

It’s fortunate that they spoke and uncle got to hear that his brother was not with the family in Hokkaido. A bit earlier and he might have reached his brother in time.

  21. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, yes, I guess there would be wounds and staggering about. Now SW is staggering to the hospital with a wound that bleeds after all that alcohol intake. I didn’t know that alcohol impedes healing.

  22. Very interesting how they film.Sung.Wu remembering going into the room where his father was killed just before he goes into the room where his brother has overdosed. The music choices were apt as well

  23. Yea I think the ML in QIHM did went around with a stab wound too. hehe.

  24. @WE, I think the number of soju bottles in any Kdrama is insane. Even to drink that much water would be too much.

The relationship between MY and her mother is slightly weird. MY is cosseting her mother rather than the mother taking care of the ‘depressed’ bride. I flashed back to when MY had to get an ambulance for her mother who had taken too many pills and realized perhaps it had always been that way. A subtle touch by SJJ?

  25. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@SD, I’m also under the impression that MY’s mother was the one needing to be cared for.

SW sees that his brother has given up his second chance at life. I wonder why camera trains on brother’s watch. It’s his time?

  26. Once again, it is a flashback. After his brother suicide that Gives us further understanding for his brother’s reasons for doing that.

  27. Brother in a coma, overdose suicide… The hero can’t take a break, it dives in overdramatism now.
Why is that, flashback… Brother come to speak to him. So I guess the suicide was in some way caused by SW situation?

  28. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I actually find this Episode 15 a bit sad and troubling overall. The mood is heavy. The negative results of SW’s meddling become clearer.

Flashback to Jung Woo suggesting a way out to SW. If SW had accepted this alternative way of living… running away to be with MY, would JW have killed himself?

  29. @GB, alcohol effects the liver, can thin the blood (vitamin K is produced in the liver), and cause or worsen inflammation so yeah probably not a good idea to drink so much just after surgery, LOL.

  30. BD Is shot by arrows To test for sorcery and ends up back in The current era. He breaks off the arrows And keeps bleeding into his clothing. At one point he returns to the past Despite being wounded.

  31. Hi all, I’m giving up on being in sync with live rewatch and will read your comments as they come to me belatedly. One question I have from watching episode 15 last night is why SW was ripping up pages of 1993 diary?

  32. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM ah yes, the arrows in BD. He did stagger around much with arrow wounds LOL.

The letter is what helps us understand how JW felt leading up to his suicide. It makes it sound comprehensible.

    Now the family finds out.

  33. Temporal bug. Arrest for a crime commited 20 years ago, but happening now. ^^
The villain will get this usefull information, and should make him trust about timetravel.

  34. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@LL, yes the ripping out pages was not explained, but perhaps he didn’t want any evidence of his going back to the past to remain because it had caused more distress and unhappiness. Also the police had been called in over Chang Min’s finger nail proving that he was the one who stabbed SW. He might not have wanted evidence for others to find.

  35. What a surprise find, finger nail in his wound.

  36. I am wondering if to outsiders it would look like sanwo’s brother killed himself because of the shame around his daughter’s And brothers supposed behavior. I wonder what it means that the fiance is crying while he looks at sun wu waiting outside his brother surgery room.

  37. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, the problem is that SW himself kept confirming time travel with villain. He never hid that he went back in a ‘time machine’ of sorts. With proof from Chang Min, the killer, Choi would investigate until he found the way to stop the time travel or could use the ‘time machine’ himself.

  38. The face make Choi. πŸ˜€
    OooOOOhoO OOOhoOOOOHOOOhoooHOOOHHH

  39. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FF, the fingernail thing was supposed to make SW feel vindicated and happy but it turns out to be the news that makes him hide evidence and worry that Choi would now never let go finding out about the time travel.

  40. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM I too didn’t find any reason for us to be shown the ex-boyfriend doctor in the beginning of the ep and then again looking upset over Jung Woo. Perhaps he felt guilty that he’d caused the scandal to be publicised and he probably thought it was his fault that JW committed suicide.

  41. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, yes this wholel episode had Choi doing so much pouty lips Oooh oooh. He tends to overact more in the 2013 timeline. He is better in the 1993 timeline.

  42. @GB, it’s a classic scheme in SJJ dramas (even in MOTA), a villain understand the high-concept and use it as his own advantage, making life of the hero more complicated. No more unbalance of power about who is master of high-concept. AGH!

  43. @GB That was the thought I
Had as well about the fiance

  44. I have problems refreshing the page today. Just remember about the soju bottles, I remember My Liberation Noted too had Son Suk Ku’s character drinking so much soju that his room is filled with soju bottles.

@GB I am surprised that SW thought that the finger nail evidence is bad news too.

  45. I forgot to comment some tricks.
Previously SW got the suicide letter, but suspens, doesn’t read it yet.
Waiting for this moment of the episode to do it (so it’s put in a big flashback montage)

The brother was born because the mother was raped? But by who. I missed a step her. It’s by CHOI?

  46. I’ve a doubt here. Who is the brother father?
In the flashback where the mother is threatened by him.

  47. It is mystifying why he is tearing out the pages.

  48. It only makes sense to me that he might be tearing out the pages so that More proof of time travel is not available to the Choi.

  49. Maybe it is dawning on the current sun.Wu that the villain could harm the young son wu.

  50. Very good confrontation scene.
But now the villain know everything.
I wonder when he gets his first wwiiiiizzzhoooowwwwhhh moment.

Only one stick at ep15, really this drama used too much sticks to early.

  51. Now he tells his friend that he is concerned about chois disgusting motivations

  52. SW is looking at the last incense, when is he going to use it this time?

  53. I think the actress who plays sun woos young mother is the same actress who played the giseng In the queen and I

  54. Now we get more background about his reasons for suicide. When sun wu reads the letter while choi It’s in the room with jung woo.

  55. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, yes who’s JW’s father is the question that gets answered later (at the end!)

  56. I go now. I didn’t rewatched next episodes yet.
As I’m in the mood, I’ll watch ep16.
    By bye.

  57. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Bye @WE! Enjoy the next episodes.

  58. @WE Yes that is a good confrontation scene. The first time I watched it.I felt like sun will gave away too much information. Now I realized the villain had pretty much already figured it out.. Still maybe Sanwoo said too much? It was as though he was challenging the villain.

  59. Now the villain is telling his henchman. To search sunwoos journals from nineteen ninety three So there is the answer to why the journals were being torn up.

  60. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM yes that’s right. I missed that Choi mentioned the journals. But I thought it was going to be hard to get his hands on them. Still he obviously has ways to find out stuff.

  61. As sun wu stares at that last incense stick at the end of the episode, I am thinking that now it is His very existence that is at stake.

  62. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM the tearing up of journals shows how fast SW’s mind worked. He knew at once that he had to hide current day evidence of his time travel.

  63. Then the female lead comes aland they stare at each other. It is no longer just about fixing their relationship but also about the existence of the two brothers.

  64. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM, yes that’s right. The last opportunity to return to the past to set things right (or to commit murder to do so!) was a matter of SW’s own life.

  65. Somewhat full circle since the brother was dead at the beginning.

  66. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Bye everyone! I’ll be popping off to bed now. Been dozing off, on and off!

    See you next week!

  67. @SD. @WE I have been thinking about why I prefer time. Travel rewatches, and I think because there is more to notice even if it may be small. It fits into the Complexity of the larger picture Enhancing my overall wonder Of the screen writer and director.

Other rewatches can get boring in parts. The other shows.I have watched frequently are angsty romances? With good couple chemistry, as they call it. Eventually though those shows become boring except perhaps for a few scenes.

So time travel shows are familiar.Comfort and still intellectually rewarding

  68. It is only on this rewatch that I understand how Hi, the stakes are for that last stick of incense. It leads well into the last few episodes

  69. @SD Very interesting point about the daughter being parentified From a young age.

  70. On second thought, Sun wu also got some important information in that confrontation.

  71. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM, what information did SW get from villain Choi?

I liked that look between MY and SW at the hospital. It said so much that they could not put into words. It and their conversation would determine the future events.

  72. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, this is so strange. It’s Sunday night for me and your comment on the rape of SW’s mum only just came into my email inbox!! @MM’s email too! Wow, speak of slow email.

Yes, it was Choi who forced himself on SW’s mum. She later confirms that Jung Woo is Choi’s son. That’s the reason for the accidental death of her husband. He’d despised her, Choi and Jung Woo because he’d always suspected that Jung Woo wasn’t his child. His harsh treatment of her that night led JW to accidentally kill him.

  73. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM, I just received your email on your liking time travel show rewatches. Yes, there’s more to chew on than the average show. However, there are other good shows to rewatch which do not have time travel in them. There were those with great characters to tear apart and analyse. I like mysteries to solve as well. Liar Game had the game itself that was worth discussing, as well as the OTT characters. πŸ™‚

  74. He threatens the villain and sees that villain is scared. Sanwoo is getting at the nefarious Intentions in the villain’s head right at the moment. The villain tells sunwoo that he would go after the Young sunwoo. There is only one incense stick left, so the hero needs to use it well and knowing his opponents.Intentions will help him with that.

  75. I watched everything up to the end. Last episode is cristal clear.
I don’t understand why I didn’t understand during my first watching.
    πŸ€”

  76. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, I didn’t bother to understand at my first watch. The only thing is again to see if the logic of having Timeline 1 and Timeline 2 which then merges into Timeline 1 sounds workable or not.

In the end Timeline 1 did not matter although it did inform how things turned out in Timeline 2.

  77. @GB, Highly provocative and UNPOPULAR OPINION:

9 is the most easy to understand SJJ drama!
    πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
Yeah, I always find funny unpopular opinions not unpopular and no one care about. 🀣

Did you notice how SJJ reused a key element in W ?
“she’s the key of my destiny”.
    πŸ™‚
I think she liked the line, but thinking… “ah it’s too fast, I can’t get the best of it, let’s use that as a real KEY line in W”.

When rewatching dramas of same writers, we know their style, reccuring themes or thricks. Of course it’s very obvious for makjang expert like Kim Soon Ok, but let’s see Park Hye Ryun:
    – There is always something related to professional achievement (make dream comes true).
    – Favorite jobs: journalists, layer, artists (singer, dancer, musician).
    – Good feeling, healing, highly moving.
    – Bad guy have tons of opportunities to get redemption but finally refuse it.
    – Good guy have tons of opportunities for revenge or hate, but finally refuse it.

    I’ll maybe starting rewatching Signal.
