Please open the thread or threads for the next Rewatch Party for Imaginary Cat. There will be 8 episodes of around 30-40 minutes each.
This series was first aired some 10 years ago!!! We get to see a younger and maybe slightly happier Yoo Seung Ho in this drama compared to when he was in “Remember: War of the Son”.
My Dramalist’s Synopsis: “Hyun Jong Hyeon is a webtoon writer and works part-time at a bookstore. He always dreamed of working as a webtoon writer, but he has difficulties due to his stubborn and self-centered personality. He also has a cat named Bok Gil. He first met his cat on the street on a rainy day. Since then, they have lived together, and Hyun Jong Hyeon only opens his mind to Bok Gil.”
Perhaps just as important, we get to hear Bok Gil’s thoughts as he responds (or not) to Hyun Jong Hyeon). It’s one of those shows that seems rather middling to light, without much of a plot, but it does set one thinking, and may even pack a bit of a punch towards the end.

It starts with helico scene, main vilain arrested.
Such beautiful work visually, love those black coats and bright sunshine. And GYM is completely comical in his dismay. NM hitsit out of the park.
Soo-Bum is ready to surrender. But for some reason, he wants to see Gyu Man a last time.
JW has a completely mature look at the end of the helo scene, confident and calm. Immed. followup, IA also in complete control. I take it back about her just being a ‘witness-female’ character.
Damn, it’s the sister who betrayed Guy Man.
She leaves. For some reason I was remembering her father gives her the company, but I was wrong it seems.
Ooh you are ahead of me. Seo-Beom’s affection for his friend. He tells NGM that being his friend has made him, SB lonely. So true of abusive control. But then SB admits to judge Kyung that he also had the best tiem of his life ‘then.’ Extremely ambiguous. Guess he isnt going to become as Christian as Det.Kwak.
This whole sectuion is bot satisfying legally and theologically, but as so often in these areas there is a lot to think about. I felt this morning as if I had only watched this hastily before.
Soo-Bum leaves while saying him “my friend”.
Well, it concludes the thematic about this fake friendship.
If you started at 8mins in , then how about NGM being pelted with eggs, a good retribution for the opening of the show and JW who has to bear his suffering. I know you love it when NGM goes nuts.
Until the end there are problems. MAD DRAMA. The judge has been changed via Il-Ho corruption.
I’m at 12 now, when the trial starts.
The daughter…Yes, because you had said that (her inheriting) I kept watching out for that turn this am, but in the usual random way of older kdramas she joins a theater troupe later on! When she charges out with her suitcase one thinks of paris and being an artists.
It’s insane, now this corrupt judge doesn’t want to accept Soo-Bum as a witness?!
OK, in the trial. How is it that even now I still shuddered at the bought judge walking in? I still believed the corruption machine couldnt be taken down.
If this were a comment section nowadays the little whiners would be talking about a rushed ending afterwards.
The way JW forces the judge to be fair is indeed rushed, or I missed something before? It was related to a previous case but I don’t remember if we saw this previously.
In the jail, another nice reflection — drug-addicted in withdrawal NGM shouting about his pain reflects back to poor Mr.Seo dying of his ulcers and being refused care.
That was Jang, the politico who forced this judge to step-in. Jang had been pressured by Hong etc, but he was the weak link in the chain of corruption. Now that he is being prosecuted this new judge must first save his own skin by being fair, and then worry…
Gosh! The sentence falls. Death penalty!!
Finally the judge did the job. But he wasn’t directly corrupted, it was rather the other guy bribed by Il-Ho, coming to ask him.
The meeting of JW and DongHo after the trial. It is a question of punishment for DH’s complicity in crime, but also of JW’s forebearance. He does not essentially forgive, but it is the scriptwriter who handles his ‘condemnation and punishment’ so delicately.
@IF, oh ok, so this twist was logical. I just missed it because one week after one week, I forget a bit.
Now in prison, the good judge confirms NGM death penalty, but for a reason I don’t understand Soo-Bum says he has to spend his life in prison. Unclear.
Maybe my subtitles was bad translation ?
DongHo meets Tak midway in episode to set up the final legal actions, now that JW has achieved his aims, the show still has its own raison d’egtre, of justice and mercy’s relationship.
Gyu Man suffers mistreatment from the doctor. A kind of reflection of what JW father suffered.
He’s still crazy angry, but maybe at one point he will collapse?
about SeoBeom, he turned himself in for complicity in NGM’s crimes, he was the middleman in carrying out NGM’s orders. Right? Why life? Was that hyperbole on SB’s part? Not sure, but certainly parole is on its way.
If I had to guess, SB is heartbroken. That is the impression left by that talk…
When NGM meets his Dad in prison that was a sort of collapse? or a glimpse into NGM’s heart and that of the nasty Sweater Dad, who uses people w/o compunction.
I start this scene with NGM father right now..
“you are not anymore my son”.
It’s cruel, but both of them are just bastards anyway.
When Tak and DH arrest Sweater Dad, the way he yells at them and defies them is so like his son.
Next scene, suicide of GYM.
For a very Christian show, a little shocking to me. Maybe a reflection of GYM’s complete corruption; unwilling to suffer, no hope of salvation…still a sad moment.
Oh, I will backtrack a little, I am ahead of you still.
Last line of the father is a killing one.
Then NGM collapses and cries….
Hong is a slimy fish, now he betrays Il-Ho, helping Tak with more proofs. I wonder if Hong will have karma hitting on his door, or if “in some way” he just did what he says “just lawyer job”.

NGM hangs himself, and seeing his expression, maybe the only moment he seems human. Ironic and tragic.
Next scene with his father learning the new is gold about acting.

It does not matter to me because truth to tell, I only enjoy our chats and not the show. It was too upsetting to see so much bad stuff happen to our good guy. I’m happy to give the episode a miss.

I’m at 37:00, at least watch from there, because there are the last scenes of what makes this drama one of the best ending ever (devastating one but so powerful about emotion).

And then afterwards we see that the father was also affected as he loses his composure with Lawyer Hong.
Thereby precipitating his own downfall.
I am using long words which come to mind @WE bec it is easier in French to find equivalents. Its instinct on my part butif it bothers you can switchg back.
@IB, I briefly glanced at what you said about the new cdrama. After Pursuit of Jade and even How Dare You, let alone A Dream Within a Dream,… it’s hard to accept the tackier, lower production value shows.

Yes, @GB I truly enjoyed this episode this time around, despite really feeling MEH the first time. Justice and Mercy. It is Holy Week after all. A good time for me to considewr politics, corruption and mercy (Buddhist but in this area we are pretty close).
I hink the first time I was caught up in trying to figure out the romance and how I/the viewer felt about it.

I kind of like that Ahn spouts the Bible verse at NGM.

Ok @GB. We were at the central section, after GYM is convicted but just before his Dad is arrested.
I like the way each relationship is ticked off the list, with careful consideration given to justice.
GYM was wrong, in my estimation, to commit suicide. But he would have gone kicking and screaming to his end at the hands of the courts. This was sadder. His Dad broke his heart.
I’m at 43:00 now and all the plot-lines are closed, including Hong arrestation.
So, start the goose-bump final scenes. AwAaahh.
“The careless life I led, with so many twists and turns”
Scene at the columbarium, when JW so good-heartedly has only good memories of DH, until knife to the heart, ” ‘Defend me’, this comes to mind”.
Crueler than anything, a reminder of DH’s betrayal of everyone.
First the scene at the funeral where JW can’t remember Dong-Ho. Poor Dong-Ho tries to not cry. T T
@WE… I don’t find goose bumps just more sadness for JW and IA altho the others are okay.
Then the video JW let to In-Ha.

it is almost one of those fantasy alternate endings, where the writer says to te audience, “well this is what you wanted? Think about it then!”

@WE, its the music that makes you cry. It is always the music. I started weeping at the end of the song as JW burns his lawbooks. Reality of his disease. The audience hopes for the usual cure.
The writer refuses to give it.
Very original in essence.
@WE the scenery is certainly nice. Does not look like their neighbourhood at all… with a mountain in the distance? Does the script say where it is?
@IB I prefer a ‘realistic’ ending like this. No last minute, weird saves from this kind of illness. A ‘too happy’ unrealistic ending would have annoyed me.
@IF, I bet it’s more the writing than the music. But ok, the music helps. 😉
It’s one of the greatest ending I ever watched in drama land.
And ending doesn’t need to be sad or happy, it needs to be the most moving as possible.

@GB, after watching W, I couldn’t watch anything, most of shows were drop. My conclusion was, “Meh, just rewatch W”… It took time and two great shows, Pinocchio and King2Heart, not as good but enough good so I could watch until the end, so let say, excellent kdramas.
@WE, do you have the link to your Google Drive where you kept the Imaginary Cat episodes? @IB needs it.
rewatching — Pursuit of Jade felt like a new thing to me, a combination of elements which worked, so my first thought (like @WE) was “rewatch”…
Although in my case bec of usual obsessive need to figure out why it was so good.
Rewatching 40 eps is sort of daunting…

@IB there are some Cdramas I won’t mind rewatching for different reasons. Usually I just enjoyed them a lot.
I was thinking that the only way we might do a quiet rewatch is either on Mydramalist where we leave comments in the messages or under a page that we set up, or else we keep the WAWW thread alive by just adding comments there.
Remember is just so great visually.
After a week watching trashy YA cdrama adventures in frothy synthetic, it hit me right in the face this morning. Such a pleasure.
Maybe that is why I lost my head about the time!
