This is the ironic episode for DP and his brother.

The cop won’t give the information about the brother.
@WE, … it’s frustrating that DP has no means to find out where his brother is.
That father of IH is so irritating. He cannot say anything nice to his daughter. He keeps putting her down or saying negative things about IH’s and DP’s relationship. I guess he hopes to keep them apart that way.
They still keep the sneaker that DP had on when he first came.
There PHR definites clearly the character goal (his “want”), with a whole voice-over. When I think in W2, some “want” aren’t so clear because the concept is more “fish out the water”, so accident happening to someone asking for nothing.
The next bit of irony is that DP has changed his mind about him and IH both being reporters. Now he thinks that a Pinocchio cannot be a reporter.
@WE, yes this series has a great voiceover telling us what DP’s motives are, so we understand and forgive DP for his behaviour towards IH.
Before elevator: harsh speech from DP to IH. No care about a romance there, it’s the kind of harsh and surprising scene we sometimes get in kdramas (older ones), where characters aren’t green (greenlight? green-what, I don’t remember) and we can enjoy serious drama conflict that hurts.
The comic scene of IH crying all the way through her part-time job and telling her customers about her plight. I love their expressions.
It’s “comedy-crying” scene.
SHe tells her life to every costumer.
This SML comes from nowhere for almost no reason, for now I feel this guy useless in the drama.
But Ok, he want the girl, it’s his motivation.

Ruby was the one who was determined to not be picked on but she ended up in trouble with Jang anyway.
SML Seo Beom Jo is the extra voice and becomes a sidekick to In Ha.
IH’s horrible mother wants to use her for PR for MSC. Instead of coming because she cares about her daughter, she only wants to use her and she forgets it’s her birthday.
@GB, as DP is so harsh with her, she will need the help of the nice guy she friendzones. AHAH!! ^^
Coldest mother. We compare with the doting mother of Beom Jo. She’s too overly sweet and smothering.
The next bit of irony,… Beom Jo is more aware of IH’s birthday than her own mother.
Next, the birthday cake that DP gets for IH goes away and comes around to her anyway.
Damnit, there are people with Pinocchio syndrome, but they fart instead to have hiccups. LOL.

@WE, BJ says it’s fortunate that lying does not result in farts which are disgusting but hiccups which are cute.
IH has to get rid of her hiccups. So she cannot pretend to even herself that she does not like DP once she realises that she does.
I like the tear that drops from DP’s eye over this other piece of irony. He loves her and she loves him but he cannot tell her. He has to let her continue to believe in his lie. He can lie but she cannot so he discovers her liking him but she cannot discover his.
Her mother want to use her for promotion, yep it’s a bit bad, BUT AT LEAST, she doesn’t lie to her daughter. That’s still a good point for the bad mother.
The bad mother only seems to have that 1 good point. She lies in her reporting but not to her daughter. She is so cold towards her. No pretense of caring for her at all.
@GB, yes, that’s a big point of this drama, triggering emotion, the vulnerability of IH.
But you know what? I have a character in W2 with the same kind of vulnerability (not Pinocchio, but also an impossibility to hide emotions), and I didn’t used it to trigger emotions, at least not with other characters, only scenes that only the audience watch and understands. I wonder if it’s a mistake because I could use that more, however, as the story unfold, I didn’t really see any opportunity, when I was already aware of that, as I watched Pinnochio long before.
I guess it’s the result of being in a family of only men… they don’t remember her birthday either!!!
Only DP and Beom Jo do.
She’s damn cold with her daughter, not like she isn’t her daughter, but more like if her existence was a distant fact, not totally stranger, but never close, never affectionnate.
@WE, it is not easy to write in scenes that can trigger emotions in or for other characters.
We get another comedic scene with IH and BJ in a crowded lift, hearing the talk about them
I’m in the roof scene. This time IH Pinochio helps her, making sure a love confession can’t be a lie. Woo! I just put myself in DP shoes, getting that! Powerfull.
In the end, in a cruel way, it’s DP that is alone with his feeling.
It’s a great thematic: The power of sincerity. It’s like an invicible wall and mirror, confronted with sincerity, anyone else has to confront their own lies or hidden feeling.
By the way, it’s a bit something like that in Liar Game.
She can’t lie when she speaks on TV, but anyway, she can be easely manipulated, with corrupted informations they give her, and she will never know there are lies.
I don’t think grandpa will survive the drama…

Continuing the irony of how the brothers decide to deal with their feelings of injustice and sorrow for their father.
One is prepared to take on a job he hates to be able to tell the truth… he takes on the pain. The other takes revenge, becoming a killer.
Everyone forgets IH’s birthday but everyone bothers to get medicine for DP.
There are scenes edited to trick us, the viewers. We are made to think that the brothers are speaking to each other when they are speaking to other people.

@GB, PHR doesn’t support violence, she couldn’t write John Wick, Vigilant citizen or even Teach you a lesson. We saw that in IHYV, the character could get revenge, but he would be an animal. I like this way to envision human condition, even if I’m quite rational and sometimes, force is the only solution.
@IB, that’s okay, I often have to remind myself what day it is as well.

@GB, trick scenes. I think it is what I treasured most about kdrama in the beginning. Especially at the ends of episodes.
@WE Well, PHR certainly gives the role of vigilante for his dad to DP’s brother. Seems he killed the other guys as well and makes it look like the boss he leaves in the hole is the killer. The other irony here is that he is doing this while his friend tells DP that he is a real softie!!!

I do feel lately that dramas are boring and have less real conflict, as does WE. They dont make one feel uncomfortable, ever. I miss that, at least in some productions.
I cant help feeling that that was a particular time-period in Korea, where all those resentments had a chance to be aired that now are again repressed. Politics, justice, ruined families, things that just cant be fixed with a little sweet music.
But that energy goes into crime thrillers and horror when it is forced underground. Symbolic resentment and anger and sorrow.
@GB, noooo, it’s just a guy falling in a manhole, pure accident, why to accuse a nice brother? 😀 😀 😀
BJ’s overly sweet mom. Thanks, GB, for the intuition that her exaggerated character works as a balance to the horrific coldness of IH’s mom.
It isnt a direct criticism of cold mom; its meant only to be funny, but it provides unconscious emotional relief to the viewer.
Psychological stuffed plush bear.
Like her son BJ balancing out the tortured DP for a short while.
Screenplay mastery: intercuts of DP with the journalist chief about “it’s not my name” with the situation of the worker (who bettrayed their father) trapped in the manhole and asking the same “who are you”.
Heck, I didnt realize you guys were still watching. That manhole was really grisly.
@IF, yes, it’s something I said sometimes here (since a long time), but I think the drama should: PUNCH you in the face, as hard as Mike Tyson could do it!!
This episode ending was GOLD !!! Now, I remember why I liked so much this drama at first watching.
It seems GB is already asleep and I should go now too, because I’ve some imperative.

Yes, to WE who is already gone, I just watched the end again and the dark/light, burying the truth /bringing the truth to light, taking revenge/ not ‘being like that’..balancing out of the contrast between the brothers is so equivalent —
so many cuts back and forth.
It feels as if each one was of equal length to its balance — the timing and rhytm is not the script but the director putting the script forward perfectly.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.
I want to go right back and watch it again.
The first time I watched it months ago the perfect symmetry didnt hit consciously.
Hi @IB, I fancy @WE might say that it really is in the script. I too thought before that it was the director and the editing that cut back and forth so seamlessly, but it could have been planned in the writing stage.
I agree with you both that the kind of emotional pull this drama has is somewhat lacking in more recent shows. But then again, I’m not watching as much or as widely as some, and may have missed ‘better’ dramas.
@GB, aaaaaaand… without surprise yes. It’s in the script.
And I bet: including the voice-overs used as prelap from one place to the other.
This juxtaposition contrasts the two ways of the brothers:
– DP ready to sacrifice himself doing a job he hates, the one that destroyed his family, because thanks to that he will get revenge by revealing the truth.
– Brother wanting revenge by killing people AND also BURY the truth, so the family will endure same torment as his own family. So it makes lot of sens that the first guy he kills is buried underground.
Burying the truth and burying the foreman … that’s true @WE!
However there was a quick cut to bodies in the morgue… the camera showed us a hand of a dead man… I believe we are to understand that the other 2 guys were also killed and the foreman who fell into the hole was to be implicated in their deaths. He too would never be found, hence his family would suffer the same fate as Ki Jae Myung’s family who were persecuted without proof.
I like the juxtaposition of the different ways to ‘set things right’. There is a more righteous way to ‘take revenge’ by exposing the truth. In the same way, it would be the way to get those working in news and media to reflect on how irresponsible they are.
