  1. @Pm3, thanks for the thread!

  2. And thanks for telling me that the thread popped up, @WEnchanteur. At times, I fret that I scheduled it for the wrong time and date.

    Enjoy!

  3. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @pkml3, thanks for remembering us!!!

  4. Hi Here!!

  5. “Santa stole?”
Once again, Kim Hae Sook makes my week!

    @GB and @WE
I am here, but I didnt get all the way through the episode this week. Still,

between Lee Jong Suk and moral quandary
    or
Yoon Kyun Sang, the most loveable murderer ever

    this is a great episode!

When it aired did the viewers also love YKS as much as I do?

  6. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

HI @WE, I hope to have okay Internet speed during the rewatch.

    Let’s start NOW!!!

  7. Hi IF, and GB (I suppose you’re here too?)

  8. Short resume about how Cha made a journalist error, not checking the death-note.

  9. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @IB… this is a tough episode for DP/Ha Myung.

Is he going to be a ‘true’ reporter or be like Song Cha Ok.

  10. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@IB @WE… to make news of more impact? To get revenge on a bad reporter? What will HM do?

It’s strange that IH does not show up… HM can guess that something’s up.

  11. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I must say that PSH does good hiccups… very convincing. I had hiccups after watching her. Could not stop them for some long minutes. Most upsetting!

  12. IH finds the real death-note now?
It says cause of death is poisoning.
    But.. agh damn, I don’t remember who is the dead-one. T T

  13. @GB, hiccups are often part of sobbing, so she has already an unsurpassable training at that, as for me it’s clear: no other actress cries better than PSH. Ahahah!!

  14. The bus driver committed suicide after he was fired for taking 60cents. I forget why he stole. Is it a christmas story too?

This ep is a Christmas story about children and gifts and theft.

  15. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE… remember the guy who protests with a placard outside MSN building asking for Song CO to apologise? His driver committed suicide, but he says he didn’t and that Song CO made news on a lie that he fired the driver who then committed suicide.

Now the question is answered by IH… it really was suicide, so actually Song CO does not need to apologise. But HM wants her to be at fault.

  16. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, I just swallowed water incorrectly and got the hiccups!!!

So sweet… Grandpa won’t un-adopt Ha Myung. He’ll be his father no matter what.

  17. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hah! Ruby says they are not like that manipulator, Song CO… but HM is conscious that he’s becoming like his nemesis.

  18. Thanks both of you. Yeah, I remember this subplot now. A bit blurry, but I’ll manage.

@GB, try to cry now, it should be better with the hiccups, check if you could do a good drama actress. AHAH!

  19. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@IB @WE, HM wants to terminate his adoption by Grandpa, but cannot.

The Bus Company owner wants Song CO to terminate her role as anchor and reporter… will it succeed?

  20. But poisoning? It’s a murder. Hum, who did this? I don’t think it’s Cha. Should rather be something related to a bad company, I don’t know what.

  21. Cha is the kind of crazy journalist that would be gladly killed in full daylight if cams film it, so it’s an amazing scoop.

  22. Beautiful egg in the face. I wonder how many takes the director had to do, so to get a so perfect result. 😀

  23. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, I need to see someone suffering then I’ll cry along.

Had to see my daughter’s boyfriend off. OK I’m back.

  24. Mmmh. Not poisoning but drugs. I’m confused.
So it’s the protestor guy who falsified the death-note?!

  25. DP chose to play fair! Not accusing Cha as she’s not responsible for the fake death act. She was a nuisance but not in this way. So, we can say: Wow! DP is the lawful good journalist. Not looking for revenge at any cost.

  26. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, now HM metaphorically throws egg at the Bus Company owner… it was a forged death certificate.

And he ends up saving his enemy from being vilified. However it’s still enough to get Song CO into a losing position. He chose to be better than Song CO 13 years ago.

  27. So the moral quandary for HM is shown by cutting back and forth between the present press mob, and HaMyeong/DP’s past with Reporter Cha. Rather than through group discussion.
We worry about what will happen even to Reporter Cha, but she nows what she is doing. Tough (old) bird.

  28. Yoo-Rae is still pretending to have this “oppa” out of nowhere (honestly, I’ve no idea if it’s true, just it feels a lie all the way), so she doesn’t seem seduced by DP, but is already seriously in love with.

Not exactly a mentor, but now the brother is in charge of “make the protagonist speak” in the drama. LOL.

  29. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE yes, so we have DP as a real hero. He sacrificed what he wanted by choosing the right thing to do instead of going for revenge.

So Song CO is back to being a reporter on the streets… but in terms of her attitude at work she never really left her position of controlling what went on in choosing the news.

  30. @GB, it’s SOOOooOOOooo typical from PHR, “never be as bad as your opponent”, don’t become an animal!!

  31. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@IB, yes the back and forth of the way reporters crowded the victims was very effective… what vultures they are!!!

Song CO stood on the opposite side of the same situation that she had been involved with when forcing questions on victims, without a tremor. Very tough nut indeed.

  32. Yeah, Rich boy steals the messages. It’s like recurring themes accross PHR dramas, because I remember something like that in Start-Up about messages. Unknow sender, etc.

Note that it’s not negative criticism, I think it’s quite obvious that writers often dig the same holes.

  33. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, yes I like that about PHR dramas. I assume she has that as a common theme.

Now more truth telling… from rich boy Bum Jo.
And IH shows so simply why she cannot date BJ… she won’t ever be able to stop hiccupping!!

  34. Anyway, IH friend-zoned rich boy now. LOL.

  35. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE @IB, What’s interesting is that while the ‘main’ plot of getting back at Song CO is on pause or ended, a new sub-plot crops up… but it’s actually linked to the ‘main’ plot.

Ruby thinks DP is sexy just squatting at the photocopier LOL.

  36. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Now IH does something sneaky… she grabs her mum’s old phone to investigate her mother.

  37. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@IB… yes this is a Christmas episode… now we get into the thieving Santa… and silly Ruby wants to be HM’s Christmas present.

  38. Begins a sappy story about the santa-claus father.

  39. @GB I felt like I was on the frontlines of Rom-com office trope, avant garde — “it is hard to look s**y when you are photocopying” says Yoo-Rae meditatively to herself while DP/HM does nothing special to the paper feed.

Havent seen that this particular shot has come back as a trope…yet. The offiuce drama has been on the rise, maybe someone will dig it up.

  40. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

LOL everyone is concerned about IH and no one thinks about Ruby except IH.

The Santa thief case is an interesting scene that brings in sub-plot of what Bum Jo’s mum is up to.

  41. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE not just sappy but will be come important for showing up what kind of person BJ’s mother is. She won’t forgive the theft at Christmas but wants to charge the thief. His son will end up alone a Christmas.

  42. Rich boy (and mama’s boy!) isn’t ready to do a scoop about how his mother sell bags. 🙂

  43. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE BJ’s mother is sugar to her son but a bitter pill to outsiders.

  44. When drunk, DP gave (we suppose) the adress of grandpa instead of his lonely home.

  45. Ahn Chan Soo, the cop, comes back into the direct story line, since he managed to lose control of the thieving Santa — he is funny and sweet. Nothing wrong with sappy.

@WE it is a story with a lot of through lines, with dating strains in the group, moving down through loyalty to one’s parents (BeomJoo and Mom, In Ah and Reporter Cha), questions of social justice, consumerism…and let us not forget, school bullying even.

  46. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Poor Ahn Chan Soo… ends up getting transferred.

It’s Christmas Eve… LOL if his wife finds out he’ll meet Jesus (in heaven?) on Christmas LOLOL.

  47. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, yes… it shows how attached he is to IH’s family. He gives the stuff he took from the restaurant to his ‘family’. He thought of them when he was drunk. And came home.

  48. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@IB, yes so true about the many through lines.

The romance comes back up now after HM gets drunk… the button is still around IH’s neck. He thought he dreamt it because she had given the button back to him.

But later we’ll see that button or lack of it.

  49. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

The nice thing is that they all got together for Christmas breakfast. Only Chan Soo’s wife is out for his blood LOL.

  50. Some of my favorite things
    ACS
“What, beg! I am a man!”
On his knees “Hi Honey, Merry Christmas —I am on my knees now”.

The traditional Sk jokes about digestion still functioning (I miss them nowadays). IA regains her appetite while on a date with BJ, excuses herself to go to the bathroom and blithely comments upon her relieved state when back at the table, in unknown earshot of her real BF.

  51. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@IB, LOL Ruby, the Christmas present with a ribbon on top, has been stood up (she thinks) … HM never promised that he’d spend Christmas Eve with her. It’s all only in her head.

  52. Gyo Dong (the nice journalist chief) is however (we discover it now) quite rude about practise. He orders to enter without permission, and even to fake that cameras are shut down (but continue to film it all).

  53. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, Gyo Dong is also a hard-nosed reporter… out for the scoop no matter what. Get in first and film at all costs.

    It gets ugly though…

  54. Such great info on beer snacks in the inset about minor theft. DP/HM steals the beer snacks from his outing with Ahn Chan Soo, to give to his family and when poor Ahn Chan Soo has to carry him home, gives his family’s address. So dried squid for Dad, “gingko”(?) nuts for grandpa, and mixed crunch for IA.

Poor Ahn Chan Soo, when the camera focuses on DP/HM’s feet dangling next to his during the piggyback carry, my first thought was that LJS is so long that his toes might drag on the ground.

  55. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@IB BJ has been living in a happy fairy tale, protected by mum… now he’s finally about to discover more about his beloved mummy.

  56. The department store interview, not very ethical? To record without permission? But otherwise the salesperson wouldnt have cheerfully relayed the information about the expensive school bags being ‘graded’ with labels like pure KOrean beefsteak.

  57. It seems that Beom Joo’s hard awakening to the contradictions of his life will be saved for episode 14.

  58. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@IB, true… not ethical at all! They seem to justify that by the fact that the price is unfairly exorbitant and the cause of suicide and bullying in school.

  59. I report a small sentence from grandpa (just seconds before the end). He help DP to wear a kind of pull-over: “take that, weather will be fresh from now on”. It sounds like a warning about the situation becoming even more serious.

  60. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, I really like that the over-sized shirt makes a reappearance and now we see that 2 buttons are missing from it, while HM thinks that there was only the 1 button that he gave to IH. Never thought a plastic button could be such a romantic thing.

  61. @IF, about bags, I watched “Kim Sarah” drama, with the obsession for bags and fashion. Now I think about it backward, I had the feeling it wasn’t the best drama I could watch, but still really better than most of recent dramas. I had to drop 3 more recent dramas since last time. It’s a carnage. I can’t find anything. I’ll continue on Bali. But well, in truth, I just everybit of my free time to work on W2 english translation. So I suppose I can’t relax and watch kdramas yet?!

  62. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, you mean grandpa was talking to IH’s father? About the shirt that used to belong to DP. Yes that’s the one DP took the button from and gave to IH as a lucky charm or something before her job interview.

  63. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, then it will be very difficult to find another show to rewatch. We might try Penthouse since you found it so addictive.

  64. @GB, I missed that, Damn IT !!! YES the missing button.
EvErYthInG nOw cOmEs to A mEaNInG !! ThE pUzzLe assembles ItSeLF!!

  65. Choi Dal Pyeong (IA’s Dad) is the one wearing DP/HM’s oversize pullover, now with two buttons missing. IA must have removed the second one to replace the one she gave back to DP?HM?

Anyway, Dad has become a much more prominent character after he switched from being the obstacle to the main romance to being the quiet supporter of them both. I like that he didnt fade away as a character.

  66. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, yes I believe it means IH stole the 2nd button from HM’s shirt for herself. But she wore it under her own clothes so he never knew that she had taken another one.

  67. @GB, I don’t know, we mentionned lot of good dramas, some with something UNIQUE, yes penthouse has it. On Air too (I rewatched 3 episodes), it has the reccord of conflict, but ANNOYING conflict, it’s so truly annoying, NO one can have a normal dialog, it has to be ANNOYING, every character is annoying, goossshhh!! I think I have a love-hate relationship with writer Kim Eun-Sook, she made dramas I don’t like but with On-Air and The Glory, she’s awesome. That’s said I prefer Kim Soon-Ok, but her drama Penthouse mostly make sens if you watched lot of “classic” makjang (and I suppose you did).

  68. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@IB, yes, that’s what I like about this show (and maybe PHR’s shows) the characters she creates have more story and life to them and are not mere plot devices. They stay on and are ‘useful’ to the plot later on. So much better than lots of other dramas where characters disappear once ‘used’.

  69. Cant wait for next week!

@We and @GB, so we will be looking for something about high fashion next? Nice.

Have a good week. See you next Saturday.

  70. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, the reason I don’t mind considering Penthouse is that I already read the spoilers so I feel I’m not going in blind. I like spoilers, unlike most other viewers.

Anyway, if we decide on Penthouse, then I’ll make plans to watch it properly first before the rewatch.

  71. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@IB… yes…. well about snobbish people in high end housing LOL. People to hate or to ‘love to hate’.

    Bye now!

  72. Well, just in case, watch “The Penthouse”. Even if we don’t rewatch it, you’ll enjoy the ride, it’s so crazy, even trashy at times. Yet excellent planning. Made by the lady having more than 700 hours produced screenplay in her life. What could go wrong? Ahhahah! 😀

I’ve to go too, now. I wish you a good week!!

  73. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    Bye @WE!!

  74. I’m working non stop on it (instead to watch kdramas, T T), currently on Ep10, so as a total workaholic, I just have to share that, out of pure enthusiasm. My GrokAI prompt to check Translation!! (I don’t report the project protocol for translation behind it). You can find something strange about “devastated”. Well, yeah, I couldn’t count how many times this word was in the translation, because I use “dévasté” in french many times, but also because lot of other english words could translate into that (in a wrong way). But, ahahaha, there is lot of devastation, for sure.

    ————————————–

    English translation review.
Attached: the episode in French AND its English translation.
Work only from these two files provided in this session.

    Goal.
Exhaustive review — not a filter that only keeps the worst errors.
The project’s translation protocol is the authority: it is the basis used to produce the translation. However, the instructions in this correction prompt take priority over the project protocol.

An English line must first be a real American English sentence, readable without stumbling. Accuracy is judged in English, in this context — not by how closely the line resembles the French.
    – A look-alike word with a different meaning is a false friend: discard it; do not propose it.
    – A calque that native US English does not say is not a correction, even if it matches the French word for word.
    – Do not flag a line that is merely debatable; do flag a line that is inaccurate. If in doubt, flag it and say where the doubt is.
    – If possible, I want the simplest translation for readers from any country whose first language is not English. Readers of my K-drama come from all over the world (truly every country), and most are not native-born Americans: they had to learn English. They may have a weak command of English, and I need to help them with wording that is easy to understand at a low English level.
    – Sometimes the English script was improved and the French script was not updated. Take that into account: some differences may mean I need to correct the French. (Often added or deleted words, or “&”, because line length has to change for the HTML version.)

    Method.
First pass: read both files together, line by line, from start to finish.
As soon as an inaccuracy appears, extract the phenomenon (false friend, calque, verb that is too generic, wrong tense, dead onomatopoeia, added word, etc.) and search for it throughout the file. Flag every occurrence. Never settle for one representative example: if a word or expression is wrong, you must report every place in the script where it is used.
Second pass: go back through the file only to close the patterns already found, then to hunt the same kind of phenomenon under other words.

What to look for on every line, with no fixed checklist:
    – Do the FR and the EN say the same thing, to the same degree? (in the same visual order if possible)
    – Is the English word the most accurate one for THIS context in US usage, or a more common neighbor that flattens the nuance, or a false friend that looks like the French while meaning something else?
    – Is there a calque: French structure or wording copied in a way that is not said in US English?
    – Has a specific verb been replaced by a catch-all verb?
    – Has a French idiom been translated word for word instead of with a living English equivalent?
    – Is a French onomatopoeia inaudible or absurd in English? If so, adapt it (this takes priority over the protocol). Fixed example already set: §§Couic!§ → §§Squeak!§.
    – Does a more precise English word exist than the FR? If so, flag it separately so the FR can be corrected.
    – Are punctuation, spaces, “…” and voice-over breaks (one sentence split into two consecutive blocks with “…”) treated as a single sentence?
    – Are format elements (character codes, tones, IMG_, #, @@ @, §§ §, FLASHBACK, RECALL) left intact except where the protocol requires translation?

Rules already fixed by the project (apply them; do not expand them into lists):
    – Use “devastated” only if the FR is “dévasté(e)”. For every pair of this type: do not collapse several French words onto the same convenient English word.
    – Do not report “&” differences on their own.
    – Do not invent meaning that is not in the FR.
    – Do not flag what the protocol already allows (kept Korean terms, question wording left in the order of the tone, etc.).

Output format, for each faulty line, in script order:
    – line number
    – the French sentence: give the whole line, not only the faulty part.
    – the current English translation: comment on why this translation does not work; explain the English nuances.
    – three proposals, all in real US English; the first must be the one that best restores the intended meaning (never a calque or a false friend), or an English idiom (if the French was an idiom or a stylistic turn of phrase).
    – EACH of the three proposals must be commented (nuance, register, tone, US usage, fidelity to the intent, difficulty level in English). This matters so I can evaluate and choose. I have little sense of common English terms and how they fit a context. Words are often misleading: two words can look similar in French/English and still mean different things. It is hard to judge what sounds exactly right in English for the meaning I give in French. SO, to sum up: a comment explaining why the original translation is inaccurate. Then a comment for each proposal explaining its nuances and the subtleties of the English.

IMPORTANT — high priority — STRICTLY MANDATORY: Every proposal must be commented, from the beginning to the end of the report.

  75. @GB, you know I don’t like spoilers. If I could, I would even start a drama without even knowing the logline or the pitch. BUT… after all, I’m often happy to rewatch (so get the full spoiler before rewatch), and even with some accident (getting a spoiler, ARGH!), I find it’s not so serious as a problem when watching. I’m in the “how great it happens” is more important than “how it ends” team. Yet, I still have spoiler sickness, I can’t understand myself. 😂 😂

  76. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, your AI prompt boggled the mind… you want everything commented as well … that’s a whole lot of reading and re-reading you have to do constantly. No wonder you’re so busy!

I was vaguely entertained by the first episode of Penthouse. Let’s see if I can continue with it. I’m more busy now and end up working instead of drama-watching.

  77. @GB. 3 propositions and comments are really needed. I put a repetition “IMPORTANT” to force comments during all the report. So now it does it, but yet, last cases have really short comments. AI is lazy. I show you a case:

    Ligne 748
FR: Ren-Bo a les yeux écartelés, pupille vide. État de choc.

EN actuel: Ren-Bo has exorbited eyes, empty pupil. Shock condition.

Pourquoi: Exorbited n’existe pas. Shock condition n’est pas une phrase.

Ren-Bo’s eyes are wide and staring, the pupil empty. She is in shock. — Image + état.
Ren-Bo’s eyes are stretched wide, blank pupil. State of shock. — Plus proche d’écartelés.
Ren-Bo stares with huge empty eyes. She is in shock. — Très simple.

Here, I chose proposition #2. But as you can see, if I understand the english (thanks to the comments, really too shorts here) I can mix. For example, I could keep first part, but instead of “state of shock”, I could use “She is in shock”. However I prefer “state of shock”, it’s dry and how I put it in the french script.

Often, we prefer “active verb” in screenplays, and if I don’t get many propositions, it could report only “Ren-Bo stares with huge empty eyes”. But here, I don’t want an active verb. I want to give the idea of the character being passive, unable to do anything, even staring. Even “wide and staring” is too much the feeling of an action. “are stretched wide” is exactly what I need. So you can see, no less than 3 propositions. I tried with 2 propositions before, and it wasn’t enough.
