Reply 1988: Fan-Made Videos

@Agdr03,

I remembered that Suntaek shippers made this for a soompi contest. You might enjoy it.

@hafunohane made this video in consultation with a handful of shippers. A list of scenes we wanted incorporated was made. I only requested that we use an instrumental music so we could at least hear some of the dialogues. But the music was her choice, and I believe this was her original work.

Then, another good FMV is this one by a Chinese fan. He/she compiled all the times, Deukson called Taec by a petname. She called him Taekkie and Gildongie (after that comic character). She was always affectionate with him.

Meanwhile, Taek had the habit of calling her “Deoksun-ah.” He never called her any other form of petname. I thought his name for her was in his usual style: simple, straightforward, and unobtrusive. And more importantly, he didn’t insult her like JH did.

JH regularly used derogatory words for DS. He called her all sorts of dumb names like hmmm…pinch-na (?). If I remember correctly, he stopped calling Deoksun by her real name after Episode 3, and only resumed after his ill-fated proposal in Episode 18. I knew he was tsundere, and that ticked me off because I couldn’t believe that kdrama writers were still romanticizing that type of cold and mean love interest. But I was glad that Reply 1988 marked the beginning of the end of this glorification of the tsundere male.

I think that’s what threw off the JH-fans. They thought for sure that JH was the lead because he acted like the stereotypical jerk of a hero who would then be straightened out by the girl and rehabilitated by his love for the girl.

Ugh. The thought of how many fangirls were brainwashed by “Boys over Flowers,” “Mischievous Kiss,” and “It Started with a Kiss” to stay with an abusive boyfriend just want me to throw up in my mouth.

After Reply 1988, the Taec/Park BoGum/second-male-lead kind of hero rose in popularity so much so that most of the kdrama heroes feature men who are sensitive, kind, and gentle type. Just look at Haru in “Extra-ordinary You,” Nokdu in “Tale of Nokdu,” YongShik in “When the Camellia Blooms” and even “Capt Lee Jung Hyuk” in “Crash Landing on You.” They don’t manhandle their girls nor berate them. They’re the “new” type of heroes.

Anyway, that’s it for now. I’ll try to comment more on Reply 1988 — and pull my old posts from soompi — when I can.

  1. Good morning! 👋🏻

    How are you? Sorry I’ve been absent. Life got very busy last weekend. I’m only recovering now and about to sleep.

    Thanks for the videos, I love SunTaek! 😍The way he says her name – Deoksun-na always made my heart flutter.

    True, JH gave her different names and yeah it didn’t appeal to me at all.

    Can I just add though that this is the series that featured soooooo many dishes that it made me hungry most of the time. 😁 Someone should have done a tally of how many times people we’re eating in scenes.

    Sigh, one day I’ll visit Seoul and just eat and explore. 🤞🏻

    @nrllee , enjoy the vacation! 😉

  2. i think that’s where I learned about galbi (?). The way that Deoksun ate it made me want to beef ribs, too.

    I’ll be in Asia in March. I envy what @nrllee and her daughter are doing so I’m also bribing my niece to join me for a couple of days in Seoul. lol. She’s currently in your next of the woods on an exchange program (or what we call a “semester abroad”) so I told her to join her “favorite aunt.” Let’s see…

    She might choose to join me in Singapore though because of that movie, “Crazy Rich Asians” and shorter travel time so I’m giving her options. The last I heard, she was crushing hard on the actor who appeared on Crazy Rich Asians. lol. I told her that guy was Malaysian. Right? Right?

  3. You’re going to Seoul too! How many times have you been there? Hopefully your niece will be able to join you. ☺️ I’ve never done those exchange programs at school. My sister did and she went to Japan for a month.

    Yes, Henry Golding was born in Malaysia. He’s British/Malaysia in nationality. He is cute. 😉

    Oh those beef ribs did look yummy. 😋

  4. You know, I never minded Boys Over Flowers as much as Mischievous Kiss. I really got the sense the male lead was only tsundere cause he didn’t know any better and the female lead taught him his place. She was no pushover! Whereas with MK – in all versions the guy wasn’t so much tsundere to me as bordering on autistic/asperger’s. I find that a problem in a lot of romances – these quiet, controlling, obsessive-compulsive males seem like they have a neurological disorder rather than a bad boy vibe. They have to be really good-looking for me to overlook the absence of personality!

  5. Will you still be writing about 1988 here? I am watching ep4 now and so many scenes are so heart warming, really would love to hear what you have said about them. 🙂

    Btw will you still be in SG in march? It is a long way to fly and esp with the Covid-19 precautions in place, stay safe!
