Bitch Talk: What Are We Watching in July 2022?

I can’t take any more.

Too many June dramas remain on my watch list so I’m only limiting myself to one new Kdrama this month.

1. Today’s Webtoon

Synopsis from soompi:

“Today’s Webtoon” is a Korean remake of the popular 2016 Japanese drama “Sleepeeer Hit!” The drama will tell the story of On Ma Eum, a former judo athlete who joins Neon Webtoon’s editorial department as a new employee and struggles to mature into a true webtoon editor amidst South Korea’s competitive webtoon industry.

Kim Sejeong will star as On Ma Eum who gives up on her Olympic dreams after suffering an injury. However, the optimist then sets her sights on webtoons, which has been her source of comfort since she was an athlete. She enters the webtoon editorial department after beating all odds, and she’s a rookie employee who lives with a positive attitude despite having to overcome many adversities.

Cast: Kim SeJeong (“Business Proposal”), Choi Daniel (“The Ghost Detective”), Nam Yoon Su (never heard of him)

I’m watching this for Kim SeJeong. It’s based on a webtoon.

Episodes: 12
Start Date: Fri, July 29. Yumi’s Cells 2 has ended by then
Airs on Fridays and Saturdays
Where to Watch it: probably Viki
Network: SBS

What are you watching in July?

  1. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @pkml3, like you, I can’t cope with what I started watching in June. I believe I’ll give July shows a pass. If anyone gives a show a good review, I’ll consider it maybe in August. 🙂

  2. Finishing Link. Maybe Jinxed At First (it’s all fluff and to be honest I would rather just binge it than wait for it weekly 🤷‍♀️. It’s not the type of show that I look forward to new eps dropping weekly). Haven’t started anything else. Steering away from Alchemy of Souls when I read that it’s a seasonal drama. And watching 2D1N.

  3. Howdy! I’m only watching Legally Romance and I’m up to episode 31. 🥰

I haven’t started any kdrama. Zhao Lusi’s new drama, Love Like The Galaxy will start airing on July 5. I’ll watch that definitely. ☺️

  4. @GB,

July is a good time to practice JOMO (Joy of missing out). Hubby recently bought an aquarium and I’m now a proud “mommy” of three koi fish. 🐠🐠🐠 It’s very relaxing just watching the fish dart here and there. Before I know it 30 minutes have passed.

  5. Well? Well? Are you liking Legally Romance? Isn’t he a sweetheart?

  6. Yes! Yes! Yes! Lu Xin is more than a sweetheart. If I put together all of his traits, patience, kindness, no expectations, loves without ever asking anything in return, he’s all out care for Qian Wei then he deserves to be in the Best Boyfriend at BODS too.

  7. Oh nice! Fishies 😍

I agree about watching them and time just passes.

  8. Okay. Okay. I’ll restart Jinxed for Na InWoo. It’s just that the actress irritates me as much as that Mr Smiley-Face/Good Boy actor.

🤣🤣 Alchemy of Souls. It’s not bad but then again, there are only 4 episodes out.

I can see how it can become seasonal. She’ll die if she can’t find a renewal energy source (sigh. Don’t we all?) and the guy is in search of his father.

2D1N had me in stitches recently. Did you see the accident that NaInWoo did while kicking the shuttlecock? 😂😂 His long legs!

I like this new Director. He has the guys moving quickly and problem solving on their own. There’s a difference in the way they behave now. They were getting too complacent with the other female Director.

It’s also funny whenever the new Director “accidentally” blows his whistle and the guys panic. It’s classical Pavlovian conditioning.

  9. I knew it! I knew you’d love him. That’s why I insisted you watch it. 😂😂

I like it too when he proposed to be her boyfriend during their debate, and he said he loved her in sign language… just like her dad taught her. (Wait. Did this happen in the drama or am I just imagining things?)

  10. Wait, what sign language? I didn’t think there was anything sign language in the drama. 😂

But thank you! I love Lu Xin! 🥰

This pair is a good match actually. Over time, I really really liked them. Good thinking of whoever paired them.

I thought it’s funny how his parents always catch them in an awkward situation 😂 But his parents are sooo cool.

  11. Sign language.

Didn’t her dad have a special hand signal for “I love you”? He would spell it on the palm of his wife’s hand. It’s their special sign language.

Then, the guy Lu Xin learned about the sign language and he “scribbled” it on her palm after the debate.

    I’m pretty sure it happened.

Or did I dream this all up??

  12. Oh wait, is it the three times squeezing /tapping on the hand? That’s what it was at the hospital. The parents did it too on their anniversary day. It focused on their hands squeezing it three times.

I think Lu Xin did that at the debate too but I didn’t think she knew what it meant then. 😁

When she finally went back to 2022 after failing to to meet Lu Xin to explain, I was heartbroken for Lu Xin. I was so happy that she did try to win him back. ☺️

  13. Yes! That’s it! I just checked Viki. It’s in Episode 13.

It’s her parents’ sign language for “I love you” and Lu Xin found out about it. (IIRC he was present in the room when her father told her about the signal so he heard it.)

So at the mock debate, when he said that he consented to be his boyfriend, he took her hand and squeezed it three times? to tell her that he loved her. He couldn’t say it out loud because they were in front of the whole school so he just did their sign language.

That was sweet. Because he loved her, he yielded to her demand so she’d win the mock debate.

  14. Yes, he was always there when her dad was in the hospital. Oh so she knew what it meant? 😂 I didn’t think she did because she was thinking that she didn’t need to complicate her life by liking her boss too 😂

Lu Xun (been spelling his name wrong) is a great guy. What a guy! I love the street message board, I love the lighted Ferris wheel and everything he did for her. ☺️

Oh I love their first kiss too after all the interruptions. 😂

  15. I didn’t see the lighted Ferris wheel. 🙁 Was it the snow globe? Was Episode was that on? I skipped some episodes.

I like the puppy. I can’t believe he kept that dog for what? 7 years?? With his allergies? lol.

    Off to bed now.

  16. Yes, it was the snow globe (episode 18) but his new apartment had a view of a real Ferris wheel, it was pretty spectacular. ☺️ Episode 29.

Oh Cupid, the dog! That alone deserves an award for him. 🥰

    Good night!

  17. Kalimera Ladies and have a nice month! 💙

No, I won’t start any July dramas. I have my June Dramas to keep me entertained! LOL

Enjoy summertime in our part of the world, as much as you can!

  18. @packmule3 yes I did see that accidental kick of the table. And it wasn’t like they had much dinner to begin with 😂. NIW isn’t what I expected in real life. I imagined he would be coordinated and athletic but he’s not that at all. 😂. They really miss Ravi (and his athleticism.). And when he mentioned he would bring his gf to Busan, I had a feeling he was trying to plug Jinxed at first? Or was that for real? None of the boys seemed interested. 😂 It seemed too coincidental that the episodes this week featured him driving SB to Busan to return a dog. Don’t bother watching it if you can’t stand the actress. I tolerate her and most of the other cast as well. I get the feeling I would enjoy IW’s other drama more – Cleaning Up, so I will try to track it down and watch that instead. If that catches my interest more I will likely drop Jinxed At First. And maybe binge the end of JAF to see if she “becomes human”.

  19. Thanks, @packmule3. I’m sticking with my June dramas but look forward to Today’s Webtoon at the end of the month.

  20. Right, @Fern?

A lot of yummy dramas came out in June that our plates full. But “Today’s Webtoon” can be squeezed in because Yumi’s Cells 2 should be done by then.

There’s also another drama that some of you may like to watch because it stars Lee JongSuk (“W: Two Worlds”) and Yoona (I like her). I’m giving it a hard pass because

    a. LJS plays a lawyer.
    b. the screenwriters are the husband-and-wife duo who wrote that preposterous “Vagabond.” (put a wry face emoji here)

  21. Thank you @Packmule3.

I like the look of Today’s Webtoon!

  22. Go ahead, @nrllee. Tell if you like “Cleaning Up” better.

Maybe I should open another “2D1N” thread. There’s been a lot of funny things to talk about.

Yes, I enjoyed the Jejudo island trip, too. I like the organized way it was edited. The director was able to cut it into three segments. One episode just for the trip getting there. The second episode for the activities at Jejudo. The third episode for the night games and following morning’s activities. It made sense.

Yes, Ravi is missed but the team is carrying on well without him.

  23. I think we should continue our conversation in the “Legally Romance” thread, @agdr03.

  24. I am sticking with Alchemy Of Souls. I really hope it does not become a multi-season drama.
I am thinking about trying Cafe Minamdang.

  25. Randomly came here to see what’s going to be covered next week but am totally delighted to see @pm3 and @agdr03 discuss Legally Romance.

It’s been a month since I’ve finished the show and I’m still not over it. It was amazing.
I’m leaving as a fan of Song Zu er but I think Huang Zi Tao was good enough too. It’s quite rare to find hilarious romcoms but this one was it. It reminded me a lot of The Day of Becoming you from last year. Both hilarious dramas with same age leads and squee worthy romances.

  26. @wapz, Wait! I’ll move your post to the LR thread.

  27. @packmule3 I just watched Ep1 of Cleaning Up. Not a fan. It’s about a bunch of cleaners who work at a trading company and utilize information they collect to do insider trading? It’s a remake of a British (?) show. Dubious morals and the main character who is female doesn’t appeal to me. IW has a smaller role. Somehow I worry that he will be pigeon holed to do the same sort of bumbling good hearted character every time. It’s problematic for him because it means he won’t get the chance to extend his range. Although I am not sure he is capable of playing “bad” characters believably. 🤷🏻‍♀️ KyungSoo has that range so he can pick and choose a wider range of characters to play. I will stick to Link for now.

  28. I had a slump lately, particularly after watching Who Rules the World. Loved the storyline and the characters so much.
Recently I picked up Alchemy of Souls and Link and is enjoying it quite a bit. Also caught up with Yumi’s Cells (ahh..I so prefer Babi a lot more, he is too nice though)

With all these extras, I am not sure if I can take anymore dramas, so I will practice JOMO as @pm3 says. But I also want to catch Love like the Galaxy like @agdr03 because of ZhaoLusi…and Leo Wu whom I watched in the Long Ballad. Am I contradicting myself here? I will limit to one new show for July since June’s dramas almost in the midway mark…there’s too much exciting things going on.

  29. Don’t give up on Jinxed, though. Although my stumbling block is the actress (and that’s *my* problem) but the script itself might be the light-hearted entertainment *you* need right now. Just keep us updated.

    My bolthole is Chinese dramas.

  30. I am also overwhelmed by the number of dramas.

However, I wont miss BIG MOUTH!!!
This is a drama I’m waiting for because:

Jang Young Chul, Jung Kyung Soon:
The screenwriting couple among my favorites. A list of achievements hardly to match: Empress Ki, Giant, Incarnation of money, History of the salaryman, and Vagabond.

    Oh Choong Hwan:
This very talented director has done: My Love from the Star, While You Were Sleeping, Hotel del Luna, Start-Up.

And as a bonus (icing on the cake) : Lee Jong Suk!

  31. Comment
    Recently completed:
KISS- it was fine. I liked watching without thinking too much. The arguing at the end bothered me. Witty banter is catnip for me but that was just childish bickering. See legally romance for banter done correctly.

Love all play—fast fwd throughout most. I do like the actors playing the main leads and will look for their future work

    Money heist- awful

    Currently watching:
Lawyer Woo- had zero intention of watching but zipped through first two episodes. Pleasantly surprised by how well they’re handling her autism.
Alchemy- it’s fine. I love the main lead …except when he’s playing an underage runaway 😒 actually I liked him then too, just not the dumb writing. Didn’t know about the multiple seasons. Maybe it will just take place in the same world but focus on different characters??
Jinxed- I don’t hate it but I didn’t bother to watch the last two episodes. Will fast forward through them when I feel like catching up
Link- like the actors but wish I cared more about the story. I’m watching to see how it goes but meh..
    Plan to watch:
I want to get around to :
    Tomorrow
The Chinese movie One Week Friends..Japanese remake. I like the actors playing the main leads. I’m hoping it will soon appear on kissasian
Cafe minamdeng— I loved the FL in mad for each other
    Will check out:
    todays webtoon
    Big mouth
Octo: Kanjou Sousakan Shinno Akari—Japanese mystery that could be interesting.

  32. I’ve stumbled into a perfect viewing schedule of on-air shows, at least for part of July:

    — Saturday & Sunday, Alchemy of Souls

    — Monday & Tuesday, Cafe Minamdang

    — Wednesday & Thursday, Jinxed at First

    — Friday, Yumi’s Cells 2, two episodes

Whether or not I have time to comment after watching is a different story.

I’m drawn to shows these days that bring me escapism and entertainment. I can’t deal right now with artificially induced angst when there’s so much from real life.

  33. I’ve started “Insider”. Only 4 episodes for now, but I will watched the following.
Episode 1 is a bit confusing, lot of expo. Then the situation is clearer after.
In the prison, it’s a drama about game, and poker. I don’t play poker but know the rules, and I like stories about gaming. Quite well made.

Money Heist have good directing and a visual identity. But it’s not so nice than the trailer! Not a lot of tension in the story, even with the many twists.

I continue to watch “Eve”, it’s a good makjang, rather classy than fast paced. One of the vilain, So Ra (ML wife) is very good (and very bad, so). Kudos to the actress.

  36. Annyeong 🌴

@Welmaris, you and i are watching the same thing. nice schedule there. i should take note. haha

for binge-watching, it’s STILL 17. Ahn Hyo Seop looks so young here *came out 2018 – i like his face more present time 😁 hihi

@PM2 i will totally watch TODAY’S webtoon and big mouth *not a big fan of noir but will give this a try for LJS … thanks to @WE for the mention.

  37. Hi all,

Just watched the first two episodes of ‘Love like the Galaxy’ – very promising and watchable.

    Quality production and acting.

The story has some fresh and unexpected elements + characters I want to see more of.

I hope it continues well and fulfils its promise.

  38. @Kate,

I was talking with a friend about it! I was planning to watch Episode 1, she told me it was good!

  39. @Cleo

I’d be very interested to know what you think of it!

  40. Update from watching 9 Eps of ‘Love like the Galaxy’ – this is great! It gets better and better so sit back and enjoy the weaving of a fine tale.

It IS a slow burn story but it is so full of interest, and characters (great cast!) and brilliantly evocative of a particular era.

I keep thinking of Jane Austen’s witty social commentary watching all the family dynamics and internal politics. One senior female character is Mrs Bennett of Pride and Prejudice in another incarnation!

The writing seems to be clever from what I can appreciate with no knowledge of Chinese.

Zhau Lusi shines as our spirited and maverick heroine. This is the best role I have seen her play.

There is also a dark intrigue being investigated by our ML, played by Leo Woo. He is a bit rigid in the role but that also has a comedic pay off so may be deliberate restraint at this stage in the drama.

  41. *Leo Wu*

  42. @Kate, You’ll love episode 10! It was a ruckus! 😂 It made me laugh so much and afterwards oh the punishment. 😬

I’m loving this show since it started.

Yes, it’s slow but every scene is well thought of. The interactions of the main leads are great. They pull me in every time. ☺️

The show itself has everything as in everything from sad, happy, funny, bloody, gory etc. I wasn’t expecting the visuals at episode 12 but it’s totally understandable.

  43. @agdr03 – glad you are loving it. I’m looking forward now to episode 10!!

Yes, I so agree re what you said about the show having everything…

It is a veritable feast (including such a clever blend of types of comedy!).

  44. ps Episode 10 – priceless! Not liking military ma at this point though! Scarily low EQ.

  45. For in between Yumi and ‘Love like the Galaxy’… I chanced upon ‘She would never know’ on Netflix. I am enjoying it.

I like Rowoon – if you don’t stay away! – and the female lead is Jin Ah-Won (Just Between Lovers).

The age difference between the ‘hoobae’ Rowoon and the female lead is 1 year but they make a lot of their professional ‘age’ difference.

  46. ps a reviewer I like suggested that people exercise patience for the first couple of episodes because the pay-off is an unexpectedly sweet and nuanced drama. I’m not there yet but excited to see what emerges.

  47. @Kate, yes Military Mom makes it hard for Niaoniao to be close to her especially with the comparison to Yangyang every time.

Here’s a bts of the horse riding teaching scene. Poor Rosy, she got so scared but everyone thought she was acting. 😂

    https://youtu.be/VdQUNdoUuzo

  48. @agdrO3 – LOL!! Too funny…

  49. Has anyone watched the C-drama A Dream of Splendor? Good review in Soompi.

  50. Hi @Fern, I’ve responded to you on the other thread where you left this question.

I actually mentioned the Soompi review.

  51. It has occurred to me that the only way I might see Dorothy Dunnett’s ‘Lymond Chronicles’ is if it’s translated into a C-drama as the 30 plus episodes genre may be required. 🙂 It was my favourite historical fiction series a few years ago.
    🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

  52. @Kate, silly me. Thank you for the reply. I forgot where I posted it and thought it got lost or stored elsewhere. The first 2-3 episodes are stunning.

  53. They are @Fern – I can’t remember the month where this was discussed but we were blown away by visual quality, scenery, costumes and wonderfully nuanced acting and story etc etc

    This is grown up C-drama.

  54. You’ve hit the nail on the head, @Kate.

Perhaps when you, @agdr03 and others are ready, @packmule3 will give us a thread. I’m already getting confused as to the place names and other historical references – shall have to start taking notes.

  55. @Fern – that would be fab.

    @agdr03 isn’t watching it yet.

She’s on ‘Love Like the Galaxy’ (also strongly recommended – super – younger love story and stars + very experienced cast and also very high quality).

If you would like a thread. And if others would like one. That would be great. I think a lot of BoDers would be blown away by this series.

I have almost finished but some of the dark plottier stuff was passing me by too – making more sense now I am almost at the end! I don’t recognise all the names as they fly by.

  56. ps should clarify – I haven’t yet suggested it to @agdr03 … she may not be interested. I know she is a fan of Zhau Lusi (Love like the Galaxy).

But let’s see if there is wider interest.

  57. I have suggested it to her, but she will want to wait until the end of LLTG for certain. I’m not a Chinese speaker so it would be interesting to know about some of the translations from someone who is. I understand from comments that the voices aren’t dubbed.

  58. I can open a thread for Galaxy for you and @agdr03, @Kate.

The internet where I am right now is spotty. I already lost a couple of comments. Please wait till I get back to the hotel tonight. Will transfer your posts then.

  59. @Packmule a Love like the Galaxy thread – that would be fab! Thank you.

We are both around half way through so may end up talking about episodes 25 onwards… we’d have to see how we did that without being too spoilerish for others.

@Fern is also talking about A Dream of Splendor C-drama. She would be interested if any other Chinese speakers were. I’ve almost finished ADoS… but would love to see what other people think – especially Chinese speakers – and contribute as they go along.

    We’ve combined the two conversations!

  60. Thanks, @Kate. I would be interested in a thread regardless. Chinese speakers would be a bonus, mostly because I can’t always get the gist of a phrase or conversation due to translations.

The ML, well all I could say at the beginning was that he is nice looking, sort of standard arrogant ML but part way through the first episode it was his acting that has caught my eye? The FL seems to be doing an amazing job with her character as well. I like a drama about intelligent people and these two keep amazing each other and me as well.

  61. @Fern – great. I’d be up for being part of that.

Re ADoS ML – so agree! He is so many things in this part… starts off as you say and then … wow! I love the way he gradually shows his true self to the FL… all the different ‘colours’ of his love for her and his personality.

BTW – he was the lead also in another show that I loved – but as a less experienced actor – The Female Prime Minister! Looking at him now you can see he has developed his craft.

  62. If we need help with Chinese translation, there’s @nrllee and @grace. We can give them a shout out. 😂

  63. @Packmule3, you are very nice and also brave to volunteer @nrllee and @grace. 😅 It would be lovely for them to join us. @nrllee always has a straightforward point of view, which I appreciate. @grace I know less well but I like her posts as well.

  64. @packmule3 I just went to watch the trailer for ADoS. Translation is not impossible but would be stretching my grammar. I am not…err…of nobility when it comes to the Chinese language 😂. I am of the peasantry. There’s a lot of metaphors and poetry etc in the way they speak in those days. So instead of saying something straightforward like, “you’re so pretty”, they are more likely to say, “the moon and stars pale before you”. 😂. Swoon worthy for sure but translation wise a nightmare. But I will take a crack at it so ask away. 😬

  65. @nrllee, no worries. Sometimes a person with skills in the relevant language can point something out when we the unskilled would either have to puzzle about the translation or accept it verbatim. I wouldn’t want you to be put on the spot. Unless it had to do with chickens. 🐔🐥 Then I would demand clarification. 😉😁
